It’s not over …

By Stephen Tsai on November 24, 2014

KHON sports director Rob DeMello figured it out. UH media relations director Derek Inouchi confirmed it. Yes, if Hawaii, San Jose State and UNLV all win this coming weekend, Hawaii would win the West Division and play in the Mountain West Conference’s championship game. Not sure how it computes. (When they were explaining it to me, I had that same blank stare I had during a year of calculus.) But they’re both smart guys, and it appears the drama extends […]

Game day: UNLV

By Stephen Tsai on November 22, 2014

It’s the final home of the season for the Warriors, who also will bid aloha to 23 seniors. Yesterday, slim became none when San Diego State won in a rout, ending the Warriors’ final chance to represent the West in the MWC title game. Heck, it was a long shot, anyway. What’s guaranteed is to see the unique play of Joey Iosefa. UH has had big backs before, but none as versatile and skilled as Iosefa. True, Scott Harding is […]

Re-booking

For each of the past three trips to Hawaii, the Rebels traveled by commercial flight on Thursday and stayed on the North Shore. In those three games, the Rebels were outscored by an average of 49.6 points to 11.7. The closest game was 42-13 in 2006. This time, the Rebels are scheduled to travel today on a charter flight. They will stay in Waikiki. As per the Mountain West Conference’s agreement, UH is paying UNLV $150,000 in travel subsidies.

Volleyball Warriors: On the rise this fall

By Stephen Tsai on November 20, 2014

These are good times this fall for the volleyball Warriors, who went 8-4 in a recent California tournament, did well in recruiting, and are preparing for Tuesday’s exhibition match in the Stan Sheriff Center. “There’s a lot to like,” said head coach Charlie Wade, who received a two-year contract extension this past summer. Wade’s optimism is rooted in his 2015 recruiting class. “Anytime you get one guy off the (junior) national team, it’s nice,” Wade said. “We got three.” The […]

End of a cycle

By Stephen Tsai on November 19, 2014

This Saturday will mark the final home game for the 23 seniors. This also will be final class involving those who played in the Greg McMackin tenure. Left tackle Ben Clarke, quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, linebacker Lance Williams and defensive tackle Penitito Faalologo grayshirted during the 2011 fall semester, McMackin’s last as UH head coach. They practiced and played every down under Norm Chow’s staff. Slotback Samson Anguay, fullback Justin Vele and wideout Ryan Pasoquen were redshirts in 2011.

Home stretch

The Warriors are back on the practice field today in preparation for the home finale against UNLV this Saturday. UH lists 22 seniors. Of note, Nick Childs, Scott Harding, Jeremy Higgins, Donnie King, Michael Martin, and Taz Stevenson initially joined the program as walk-ons. Stevenson, who earned a bachelor’s degree at Washington, is in graduate school. The Warriors remained on schedule this week despite spending an extra 15 hours in the Bay Area. After a mechanical problem forced the plane […]

Outside linebacker TJ Taiamatuia today was named the Mountain West Conference’s defensive player of the week. He amassed 11 tackles, including one for negative yardage, in a 13-0 victory over San Jose State. It was the Warriors’ first road victory since Oct. 29, 2011 a span of 11 games. * * * * * The Warriors had to spend additional time in San Jose when they were passengers in a plane that experienced mechanical problems 90 minutes into a flight […]
