We’re all good

By Stephen Tsai on December 10, 2014

For the most part, we’re nice people. We’re the only place in the country where we thank other drivers for letting us change lanes. We leave the last piece of food on a serving tray in case there might be someone who might want it later. We call anyone older “auntie” or “uncle.” Even when we’re not at fault, we apologize to the people behind us in line when a computer-malfunction delays our transaction at the counter. And when somebody […]

Jay to announce resignation

By Stephen Tsai on December 9, 2014

Everybody wants to be Santa. But it takes seemingly unlimited resources, volunteer elves, people willing to open their hearts and homes, chartered sleighs … AD Ben Jay is a nice guy who had a hard time saying no. He was willing to open his financial books. He would greet critics and frenemies with a handshake. He would extend contracts. He was accessible — by cell phone, by Twitter — to reporters, to fans, to critics. He was willing to sit […]

Mililani WR Timoteo to join UH in 2016

By Stephen Tsai on December 8, 2014

The Mililani-Manoa pipeline just got busier with wideout Kalakaua Timoteo accepting a 2016 offer from the Warriors. Here’s the skinny: > Timoteo joins quarterback McKenzie Milton, also a junior, in making a future pledge to the Warriors. They’ve been friends and teammates since their hanabata days. > Timoteo is 6-2, about 190 and, according to Mililani coach Rod York, has “Spider-Man hands.” > Timoteo, also a basketball player, first dunked when he was a freshman. > In the state title […]

Photo op

There is no doubting the resiliency of the UH softball supporters. Told that booster-club funds could not be used to pay for a gently used video camera, the leaders did not pout — OK, they pouted a skosh — but then they asked for donations. Enough poured in to buy a camera that will be used to stream scrimmages, practices and, with everybody’s permission, games not covered by current contracts. The videos will be helpful in providing greater exposure for […]

Warriors are getting “very special” QB

By Stephen Tsai on December 6, 2014

Mililani High QB McKenzie Milton accepted a football-scholarship offer from the Warriors yesterday. Today, Milton — and his Mililani teammates and coaches — marched in a parade. OK, OK, those two events are not related. But with the way Milton’s life has gone recently, hey, it would seem possible. Two weeks ago, Milton threw for 421 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Trojans to a 53-45 victory over Punahou in the state championship game. This past week, Milton, a […]

Alma mater calls

By Stephen Tsai on December 5, 2014

According to people in the know, June Jones is indeed a candidate for the UNLV coaching job and a phone interview is scheduled. Bishop Gorman High coach Tony Sanchez remains as the front-runner. Jones did not attend UNLV, but he is an alumnus of four other universities. Those connections have led to another candidacy: Portland State has contacted Jones about its head coach’s job. (Nigel Burton was dismissed at the end of the 2014 season.) It makes sense because: > […]

Leaving the Beavers

By Stephen Tsai on December 4, 2014

Warrior football will miss Mike Riley, who will leave Oregon State to be Nebraska’s head coach. And Warrior football won’t miss Riley. Riley always had a good relationship with the Warriors, largely because of his willingness to play in Halawa or Corvallis. Sure, much of it had to do with wanting to using the games as a recruiting tool. But a lot of schools recruit in Hawaii without the willingness to actually play here. How Riley’s departure will affect OSU’s […]

UH athletics: Here’s the cure

By Stephen Tsai on December 3, 2014

Sure, there’s panic when a school like UAB drops football. There’s panic when a tornado rips through Oklahoma. But, relax, it’s not happening in Hawaii. Different circumstances, different everything. First, UAB, as it revealed in its announcement, was subsidizing the athletic department with $20 million annually. If an athletic department can’t make a go when two-thirds of the budget is covered, there are bigger issues. UH athletics doesn’t receive that type of support for its operating budget. Most important, UH […]
