Santa Monica College cornerback Dejaun Butler told us he has accepted a scholarship from the Warriors. Here’s our on-line story: Butler joins UH There will be a full story/interview in Sunday’s Star-Advertiser. * * * * * Somebody forgot to tell Daniel Masifilo to stop dreaming. Six years ago, Masifilo, a Campbell High graduate, had a dream about playing college football. He went to Mount San Antonio College, a JC powerhouse, then to Arizona State. The NCAA noted 6.5 percent […]

Friday’s musings

By Stephen Tsai on January 23, 2015

It’s Friday. Here are some things to consider while near the Keurig machine: > The Mountain West Conference controls the television rights to the UH-Colorado opener, which now will be played on Thursday, Sept. 3. (By the way, that’s “Ferd” Lewis’ birthday.) ESPN and CBS Sports are entitled to take that game. Their intentions won’t be known until July, when a master schedule is released. If ESPN and CBS Sports pass, then it likely becomes a pay-per-view event. Aloha Stadium […]

Warriors set to add receiver

By Stephen Tsai on January 22, 2015

Bishop Alemany receiver DeSean Holmes made what could be termed a soft commitment to the Warriors yesterday — a pledge, he expects, that will be solidified during this weekend’s recruiting trip. He said his mother, who is accompanying him, wanted to meet with the counselors and tour the campus. In December, Holmes, a four-star receiver, de-committed from an oral commitment he made to USC in July. Holmes said head coach Norm Chow and point recruiter Lewis Powell held true during […]

Beemer took different path

By Stephen Tsai on January 21, 2015

If everything was sensible, Gary Beemer would have been wearing Lebron-issued Beats while picking golden confetti from his Ohio State gear last week. Beemer would have been a perfect fit at OSU. Head coach Urban Meyer was Beemer’s college coach at Florida. Sports performance coordinator Mickey Marotti was Beemer’s college strength/conditioning coach. OSU made an offer to Beemer to join Marotti’s staff last year — and Beemer turned it down. Beemer’s decision was based on loyalty to coach Norm Chow, […]

Wallace suffers stroke

By Stephen Tsai on January 20, 2015

Stan Sheriff once told Riley Wallace he had the attributes of a football coach. Wallace, at the time, was the Rainbows’ basketball coach. It was an apt description for the feisty and competitive Wallace — and a comment he took as a compliment, which it was. We used to joke that “Old Yeller” was his favorite movie and his nickname. Wallace is hospitalized in Las Vegas after suffering a stroke last night. We’re rooting for a speedy and full recovery […]

JC o-tackle commits

By Stephen Tsai on January 19, 2015

The Warriors received a commitment from Fullerton College offensive tackle Matt “Moose” Norman. He joins UH tomorrow. Here’s our on-line story: UH gets O-lineman * * * * * Football-team members insist they go on business trips, not road trips. The Warriors, though, try to mix business with education. In Utah, they ate Brazilian cuisine. In Houston, they toured NASA. And in 2013, they made two tours of the D.C. area, including stops at the Capitol and memorial exhibits. One […]

JC running back to join Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on January 18, 2015

Running back Mel Davis of Santa Monica College has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors. Here’s the skinny: > Davis said he is 6-2, 230 pounds and capable of running a sub-4.6 40. > He likes to block — or do anything to contribute, saying, “If they want me to go out there and play center, I’ll do it.” > He was set to play for Washington two years ago, but the NCAA Clearinghouse did not approve a core […]

By Stephen Tsai on January 17, 2015

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that defensive coordinator Kevin Clune is leaving the Warriors to become Utah State’s DC. Clune was with the Aggies before joining the Warriors last year. Here’s the story: Clune leaving
