It’s time for football hopefuls to start editing those highlight videos. Here are the important dates for future and former Warriors: > Walk-on tryouts: They’re tentatively scheduled for the Feb. 20. Participants much be full-time UH students if they want to be considered for the offseason conditioning program and spring training. Sign-ups are at the UH football office. > UH pro day: The combine-like event will be March 19 at San Diego State. Officials from every NFL team will be […]

Wait and see

By Stephen Tsai on February 8, 2015

Nobody likes to wait. We don’t like to twiddle our thumbs at the doctor’s office. We don’t like to circle the airport until somebody arrives curbside with the bags. We don’t like to keep refreshing the home page until the blogger decides to get off his wallet and post an item every morning. But sometimes waiting is good and purposeful. For all the manure some give to the folks in Manoa, the thing UH does correctly is vet potential hires. […]

Warriors close to naming coordinators

By Stephen Tsai on February 7, 2015

SMU’s Tom Mason and Idaho State’s Don Bailey are leading candidates to be named the Warriors’ defensive and offensive coordinators. They’re are obstacles, though, before anything can be finalized. Here’s the online story: UH coordinators * * * * * No matter the outcome, fans of Warrior volleyball surely had fun at last night’s match against No. 2 USC. The crowd was large — and rowdy. Even the hecklers were back. (When it comes to heckling, Hawaii volleyball fans offer […]

Gouveia keeps proving them wrong

By Stephen Tsai on February 6, 2015

Kurt Gouveia has spent a football life being overlooked. UH did not recruit Gouveia, the state’s player of the year. He went to BYU, became an All-WAC linebacker and was a key member of the Cougars’ national championship team. NFL teams were wary, too. He was selected in the 1986 NFL draft’s eighth round, a round that no longer exists. He played 13 seasons in the NFL, and earned two Super Bowl championship rings with the Washington Redskins. He made […]

Union 76

By Stephen Tsai on February 5, 2015

While growing up, Campbell High lineman Arona Amosa heard the stories about his father, Amosa Amosa, a former UH lineman. “I was hoping to make some stories of my own,” said Arona Amosa, who will join the Warriors as a preferred walk-on. Amosa Amosa said he often told his son about then-UH coach Dick Tomey’s recruiting pitch. “Coach Tomey showed me (Jesse) Sapolu’s jersey and told me, ‘This is going to be your number when you come to Hawaii,’” the […]

Recruits signed their letters of intent with Hawaii on Wednesday.

Eve of construction

By Stephen Tsai on February 3, 2015

I have no idea what a nitty or a gritty is, but the Warriors apparently are down to the nitty-gritty in this recruiting season. Austin Webb, a 6-foot-8, 312-pound offensive tackle from Dallas, said he has accepted a scholarship from the Warriors, will sign a letter of intent tomorrow, and will move to Hawaii in July. The Warriors also are prepared to finalize a commitment from a decorated defensive end/outside linebacker if any prospect de-commits. Even with that, the Warriors […]

Waiting game

By Stephen Tsai on February 2, 2015

If you missed the turnover at midnight, it’s now the dead period again for recruiting. That means a team can initiate only one telephone call per week to each prospect. UH has plans in place to add prospects and to replace those who might de-commit. Meanwhile, Punahou punter Alexander Trifonovitch’s commitment means: > The Warriors are re-emphasizing the importance of a solid punting game. After all, Scott Harding, who punted as part of his three duties, was the back-to-back MVP […]
