Delayed action

By Stephen Tsai on March 13, 2015

Linebacker Lance Williams is bigger, faster and stronger than he was three years ago. It is a testament to hard work, maturity and, perhaps, being a part of the grayshirt process. Two decades ago, Al Beaver, who was a defensive line coach at the time, received a commitment from offensive lineman Kaulana Noa. The deal was Noa would delay his enrollment a year to allow himself to develop physically. Noa, in essence, became what is now regarded as a grayshirt. […]

UH needs to play Trump card

By Stephen Tsai on March 12, 2015

The beauty of the “Celebrity Apprentice” is that contestants are put through various business-related tests to prove their skills, contacts and innovations. Of course, there’s only one winner, but that’s fine. The winner isn’t actually going to work for Donald Trump. And the losers? Well, they’re already celebrities. So there. The problems with UH’s searches for athletic directors (and coaches and custodians) are candidates are assessed on resumes and hypothetical tests. If, say, there were an opening for a custodian, […]

Three observations

By Stephen Tsai on March 11, 2015

After watching the players-only unsupervised workout, three things are apparent: 1. Quarterback Max Wittek has a rocket-launching arm. 2. Ikaika Woolsey, who easily made all the throws, is not ready to cede the No. 1 job: 3. Wideout Devan Stubblefield is recovering nicely from last year’s knee surgery:

Kickoff

By Stephen Tsai on March 10, 2015

Tyler Hadden’s graduation opens the kicking competition this spring. Kainoa McDonald, a 2014 Punahou graduate, redshirted last last season. But two familiar kickers — Joe Uglietto and Aaron Novoa — are expected to be in spring training. Uglietto, who was raised in Massachusetts, was Colgate’s starting kicker in 2011. He then transferred to UH, and redshirted in 2012. In 2013, he was a backup to Hadden, making one road trip. He did not play football last year. Novoa played at […]

The long journey to the top

By Stephen Tsai on March 9, 2015

Big events don’t just happen. They take long periods of planning, arguing, Bridezilla meltdowns and hard work. It takes a lot to make something look easy. And so it was with last night’s volleyball match, in which the Warriors out-dueled nemesis Pepperdine to move into first place for the first since … forever. And while the Stan Sheriff Center had a 1996 vibe — or, at least, 2002 feel — this season’s Warriors are unique. The mid-1990s Warriors had the […]

Match day: Pepperdine

By Stephen Tsai on March 8, 2015

The Warriors and Waves meet at 5 p.m. today in the Stan Sheriff Center. If the Warriors win, they move into a first-place tie in the MPSF. * * * * * Do you know how radio airs public-service pieces early Sunday as part of the FCC requirements? Well, here’s the confession: Today I’m experimenting with posting photos and editing from cell phone. So, if you see a random selfie pop up today, well, that’s part of the experiment. It’s […]

Harding on the go

By Stephen Tsai on March 7, 2015

With some free time this morning, former UH football player Scott Harding decided to spend it the way he spends most of his free time. He exercised. He went for a run — not outdoors, where it was in the 30s, with snow on the ground in Chicago — but in an indoor facility. Harding is participating in this weekend’s NFL regional combine. The defense went through drills today; the offense goes tomorrow. Although Harding aspires to be an inside […]

Catch the Waves (and Warriors)

By Stephen Tsai on March 6, 2015

Here are the reasons why tonight’s Pepperdine-Hawaii showdown is a must-watch volleyball match: > The standings: Hawaii (10-2) and Pepperdine (9-2) are in a four-way cluster at the top of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UC Irvine is first at 12-2. BYU and UH are tied for second. > Rivalry: This will be the 71st meeting between the teams, which includes UH’s victory in the 2002 national title game. UH later forfeited the title — maybe. The NCAA reportedly has […]
