Spring break

By Stephen Tsai on March 21, 2015

The Warriors completed the offseason conditioning program and, coinciding with the school’s spring break, will go on hiatus for a week. There still are some tasks to be completed. The Warriors are expected to fill two more scholarship openings, including landing another DT/NT type. The Warriors’ first of 15 spring practices is on Saturday, April 4. * * * * * The volleyball Warriors are ranked No. 1 nationally and are UH’s only remaining active indoor team this academic year. The last hurrah

By Stephen Tsai on March 20, 2015

Maybe the 17 players who participated in yesterday’s pro day will advance their football careers. Maybe not. What is certain is that was the last time all 17 would be on a playing field together. It was fun to see two former roommates — quarterback Taylor Graham and slotback Donnie King — completing throws during passing drills. It also was nice that former teammates encouraged each other during the 40-yard sprints. Quarterback Cayman Shutter had been away from the program […]

The final two

By Stephen Tsai on March 18, 2015

The AD search apparently has come down to two very qualified and likable guys: Keith Amemiya and David Matlin. Both work hard. Both are nice guys who also aren’t afraid to make tough calls. Both work well with others. For Amemiya, that meant dealing with the politics of high school sports and UH’s Board of Regents. For Matlin, that meant dealing with the politics of college football and basketball and ESPN. (Random trivia: Matlin’s father, Lew, was the Hawaii Islanders’ […]

Video cuts

By Stephen Tsai on March 17, 2015

A few days ago, former UH wideout Jeremiah Cockheran received a notification letter that he — like the thousands who were Division I basketball players or FBS football players between 2003 and 2012 — was eligible for a payout as part of a settlement involving the NCAA and video-game company. “I thought that was pretty cool,” said Cockheran, who occasionally followed news accounts of the case initiated by former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon. The lawyers, of course, get a […]

Sunday’s musings

By Stephen Tsai on March 15, 2015

Here’s what the blog host thinks: > This past week, the nation’s top three volleyball teams — Loyola, Lewis and UC Irvine — all lost. Despite the parity/marketing wishes of the volleyball higher-ups, the MPSF is still the sport’s best league. The Warriors are in first place in the MPSF, a half-game ahead of Irvine, and will remain there for at least another two weeks because they have both a bye next weekend and fewer losses than everybody else in […]

Being Frank

By Stephen Tsai on March 14, 2015

As an offensive lineman, Frank Loyd Jr.’s value was his intelligence, versatility and intelligence that allowed him to be versatile. He could play both tackle and both guard positions. But he also knew the center’s assignments, and he was willing to be a long-snapper. The past year, Loyd earned a degree in business management and finance. He then received an offer to work for a financial company. He also received an offer to be a graduate assistant for the state-of-the-art […]
