The Warriors had their second spring practice today and, like the first, they were in “shells.” It’s still an instructional time. Picture day

Wishing everyone a joyous Easter. Now here’s the picture show: We begin with the star of yesterday’s first spring practice: This former Warrior running back made an appearance: The morning-show guy: Meanwhile, the volleyball Warriors were busy beautifying the area around the Stan Sheriff Center. They shoveled mulch (Kimo Kai came through with the donation), rocks and dirt; weeded; and power-cleaned. Middle working the block: The head coach: Another dig for the libero: In the bag: Graduate assistant also puts […]

Spring is in the air

By Stephen Tsai on April 4, 2015

Because of hiring policies, spring break and other factors, the Warriors become one of the last schools to open spring training with today’s first of 15 practices. This could be a good thing. The five new hires were able to get acclimated; injured players had more time to heal. Every year there’s a QB battle. And with Aaron Zwahlen joining in late May, the Warriors probably will wait until training camp to announce an opening-day starter. But here are some […]

Iosefa: “Keep working”

By Stephen Tsai on April 2, 2015

Joey Iosefa returned to Honolulu this morning with one thing on his mind: “It’s time to go back to work,” Iosefa said. Iosefa left nearly three weeks ago to participate in UH’s pro day in San Diego. The Cincinnati Bengals sent three representatives, including running back coach Kyle Caskey, to personally work out Iosefa. The Green Bay Packers also praised Iosefa’s pro-day workout. That evening, Iosefa and agent Aaron Gordon had dinner with an official from the Kansas City Chiefs. […]

In defense of Aloha

By Stephen Tsai on April 1, 2015

Hawaii is an easy target. In part, it’s because the residents are generally nice people who let things slide. In part, when things go wrong, everybody knows. (Latest example: A zipper lane that didn’t zip.) Aloha Stadium has been bashed since the first engineer said it would rust to a point, then stop. Lawmakers debate whether to keep paying for repairs, build a new one or sell it for scrap metal. Well, at least the rust-to-a-point pieces. According to a […]

The sub way

By Stephen Tsai on March 31, 2015

The volleyball Warriors were emotionally flat and in trouble. And then they brought in a setter who provided a boost in a comeback victory. That setter was Alex Jones last night. That setter was Daniel Rasay in 2002. In both situations, there was no questioning the skills and leadership of the starters — Jennings Franciskovic last night, Kimo Tuyay back then. But sometimes, a coach needs to shake it up. That’s been the case historically at UH. Carl English was […]

‘Rainbows’ need to go to market

By Stephen Tsai on March 30, 2015

In May 2013, the AD declared that “Rainbow” would return as nickname to UH’s sports teams. (Actually, it would return as an adjective to Warriors and Wahine.) Three months earlier, of course, the AD declared that the men’s teams would be known only as the Warriors. That February 2013 decision, which came three months into the AD’s tenure, sparked some protest and led to his version of the hokey-pokey: You put your Rainbow in, you put your Rainbow out, you […]
