UH can fit the bills

By Stephen Tsai on May 23, 2015

Every month, I like to put all the bills in a nice pile (resisting the urge to start a mini bonfire) and then yell: “Ouch!” But after a while, I realize it’s not so bad. (OK, paying for the Mayweather-Pacquiao telecast was bad.) And then I pay off the bills. Live for another day, as volleyball coaches say when instructing servers to just put it over the net. I’m sure David Matlin probably said “ouch” more than a few times […]

Mission accomplished

By Stephen Tsai on May 22, 2015

After serving a two-year church mission in the Baltimore area, quarterback Aaron Zwahlen is back home in California … for the next two days. Zwahlen and his father Lynn Zwahlen arrive in Hawaii on Monday. Zwahlen begins UH’s Summer Session I on Tuesday. Zwahlen, who was listed in ESPN’s top 300 in 2013, said he kept in shape with early-early-morning workouts. He even requested a second football be sent after wearing out the first one. The Warriors’ offseason conditioning program […]

Riggins: “Needed” to be closer to family

By Stephen Tsai on May 21, 2015

Running back D.J. Riggins said “family issues” factored largely in his decision to transfer from UH to Pierce College in Los Angeles. “I loved it out there (in Hawaii),” said Riggins, who requested — and received — a release from his scholarship after spring training. “I loved everything. But as I told coach Chow, there’s a lot going on between, like, family issues. The main reason is being a lot closer. It’s really expensive to see them. It was best […]

“Lone Survivor”

By Stephen Tsai on May 20, 2015

Marcus Luttrell, the Navy SEAL whose story is portrayed in the book and movie “Lone Survivor,” met UH coach Norm Chow last week. After a nice conversation, Luttrell agreed to speak to the Warriors in November. Luttrell’s story is inspiring.

Graham grateful for audition

By Stephen Tsai on May 19, 2015

Although he exited a three-day tryout without a contract, former UH quarterback Taylor Graham was grateful for the opportunity to compete in an NFL camp and build his resume. “I didn’t make it unfortunately,” Graham said following the New Orleans Saints’ mini camp this past weekend, “but they said I did well. I’m hoping it will lead somewhere, too.” He said the camp consisted of draft picks, free agents and tryout players. “Practices and films,” Graham said of the activities. […]

Recess

By Stephen Tsai on May 18, 2015

For the first time in nine months, there are no events scheduled on the Manoa campus this week. But that doesn’t mean the work has stopped. The Warrior coaches continue to recruit here and on the mainland. UH’s first summer session begins next week. The freshmen will participate in the bridge program starting in late June and running to the start of training camp. The Warriors are scheduled to report on Aug. 4. The first practice is Aug. 5.

Graduation lessons

By Stephen Tsai on May 17, 2015

UH often is target of criticism, but the one thing it does well — really well — is graduation day. Observations from yesterday: Prior to each graduation ceremony, student-athletes and their families are invited to meet in the Nagatani Academic Center, where they are offered refreshments and presented with a white student-athlete stole. The UH athletic department and UH Letter Winners Club are joint sponsors. It also is one of the few times the public is allowed to tour the […]
