Keke and keiki

By Stephen Tsai on July 25, 2015

Yesterday was the last day of Lance Keke Williams’ internship with the Boys & Girls Club of Honolulu. But he still plans to continue visiting — and coaching — the students who have become his friends. “I loved it there,” said Williams, whose internship was part of his family resource studies. He is on track to earn a bachelor’s degree in December. As always, Williams brought along UH student-athletes to play sports (dodgeball, basketball, football) with the kids — and […]

Beach day

By Stephen Tsai on July 24, 2015

The Warriors closed the training phase of the offseason conditioning program with this morning’s workout at Waikiki Beach. They ran eight 53s, four half-gassers, two full gassers and a 300. Translation: They sprinted 1,368 yards … on sand … and half the time on a slanted path. The Warriors will focus on testing next week. He agreed to the cut to comply with team rules. * * * * * Despite being listed at No. 2 on the depth chart, quarterback Ikaika Woolsey is having a pretty good summer. He has dropped five pounds, shows no ill effects from the back injury he endured last season, and his passes appear to have more […]

Mane man

By Stephen Tsai on July 19, 2015

A couple weeks ago, we detailed how freshman nickel-linebacker Solomon Matautia cut the hair he had grown since the fourth grade to meet team requirements. Most recently, Lance Williams, a senior linebacker and co-captain, also cut off the tail he had been growing out this spring. Williams said he loved his long hair, but, as he proved, he was more committed to his leadership role. * * * * * Every year, football official George Gusman invites the media to […]

Fun and games

By Stephen Tsai on July 18, 2015

Once again, about 20 Warriors spent time with their new friends at the Boys & Girls Club of Honolulu. They played dodgeball, pool and foosball, and offered advice on everything from academics to doing the right things. The Warriors also learned a lesson: Hawaii’s kids are skilled dodgeball players. As a counselor noted: “This is what we do.” Here’s a video of the Warrior clap: clap * * * * * * * * * * And here’s a video […]
