Delayed route for JC wideout

By Stephen Tsai on August 2, 2015

If everything goes according to plan, Glendale CC wideout Isaiah Bernard will be joining the Warriors in mid-August. Bernard has earned an associate degree, a key NCAA eligibility requirement for a junior-college transfer. He said he needed to earn credits in a math class to fully meet the standards to join the Warriors. Bernard said he has completed the work and was told he will earn a passing grade in the on-line class. But because the course does not officially […]

Ease for efforts

By Stephen Tsai on August 1, 2015

When Eric Okasaki started at UH nearly 40 years ago, George Ariyoshi was governor, Booga-Booga had its original members, and the only rail was the one at Pearlridge. In other words, Okasaki brings old-school values to the school, one of which is an athletic-department-bonding session dressed as a potluck. Okasaki is the organizer of the annual event — held after work hours, of course — that brings together administrators, staffers, coaches, custodians and their families for fun, food … and […]

Midnight madness

By Stephen Tsai on July 31, 2015

Your parents weren’t entirely correct. There are good things that happen in the wee hours, such as this morning’s annual midnight weightlifting session. The event served as both a Warrior-bonding experience and a conclusion to the offseason conditioning program. Nose tackle Kiko Faalologo was this summer’s Hulk. He had four bench-press reps of 405 pounds. Now you know whom to call if you need help moving an appliance. The players report on Tuesday. First practice is Wednesday.

Ursua set to join Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on July 30, 2015

Forty-two months after signing with the UH football team, playmaker John Ursua will be joining the Warriors. Ursua said he earned admission into UH, and will participate in training camp. The initial plan calls for Ursua to redshirt this season. Ursua signed with UH in 2012 with the intent of going on a two-year church mission. But there were procedural snags, and Ursua did not start the mission until 2013. He returned this past spring. Ursua said he and UH […]

Warriors expected to receive COA stipends

By Stephen Tsai on July 29, 2015

UH is among eight MWC football programs that will offer cost-of-attendance stipends, league officials confirmed. Cost of attendance is the amount needed to cover expenses above a full scholarship’s coverage of tuition, room, board, books and mandatory fees. COA is based on a federal index in each school’s area. MWC officials said the league’s average COA is $3,813. At UH, athletic director David Matlin has been quoted at estimating an average fully funded COA stipend at a little more than […]

Warriors picked 5th

By Stephen Tsai on July 28, 2015

The Warriors are predicted to finish fifth in the Mountain West Conference’s six-team West Division in polling of football media. The poll was released during this morning MWC Media Days. “That’s a little disappointing,” said left tackle Ben Clarke, who is representing the Warriors at the annual meet-the-press event. “It doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a prediction. We’ll show ‘em.” Clarke said the predictions are based largely on past performances. The Warriors were 4-9 in 2014 and 8-29 in Norm […]

Rasmussen thrives in new role

By Stephen Tsai on July 26, 2015

For nearly two weeks, every day is father’s day for nose tackle Kory Rasmussen. “It’s cool,” said Rasmussen, whose girlfriend, Rae, gave birth to the couple’s son, Kruse. Rasmussen, a Kamehameha Schools graduate who transferred from Colorado two years ago, was placed on scholarship this summer. But this summer, he is taking classes, working as a landscaper (K Sakuma Landscape), training and parenting. He also developed his skills as a birthing coaching. Lamaze? “I took Google,” he mused. He said […]
