Bukoski, Joas awarded scholarships

By Stephen Tsai on August 10, 2015

The Warriors staged a talent show for rookies last night. But coach Norm Chow said the “funnest” part was announcing that wideout Duke Bukoski and running back Pereese Joas were awarded scholarships. Bukoski, a Saint Louis School graduate, relinquished a scholarship from Idaho State to transfer to UH as a walk-on three years ago. Joas, who was raised in Texas, went through a period of homelessness in his quest to become a Warrior. Here’s the Honolulu Star-Advertiser story: Bukoski, Joas […]

When good things happen to good people

By Stephen Tsai on August 8, 2015

Sometimes, the nice guys win. Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea and his wife were certified as foster parents before their 19th birthdays. Last year, they wed. Last November, they adopted two boys — now 11 and 10 — who were his “brothers” when they were in the same foster family growing up in Hawaii. They’re raising their two sons on her two jobs and his scholarship checks, their love, and their faith. And thanks to NCAA’s waiver, Kema-Kaleiwahea, who transferred from Arizona to […]

By Stephen Tsai on August 7, 2015

A year ago, the Warriors faced a double setback when wideout Devan Stubblefield suffered a serious knee injury on a non-contact play during the first day of training camp and wideout Vasquez Haynes opted to undergo surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Both have received medical clearance to practice, although Stubblefield is required to wear a knee brace the remainder of this training camp. Stubblefield had undergone surgery for meniscus and ACL tears. After a tentative outing […]

First practice is this afternoon

By Stephen Tsai on August 5, 2015

After a long, long offseason, Norm Chow’s fourth UH training camp opens this afternoon. Three observations: > Strength/conditioning coach Gary Beemer upped the cardio activities, increasing the number of gassers this summer. The Warriors appear to be more fit exiting the nine-week program than in past summers. > With so many leaders — quarterbacks Max Wittek and Ikaika Woolsey; receivers Marcus Kemp and Quinton Pedroza; running back Diocemy Saint Juste; linebackers Simon Poti, Lance Williams, and Julian Gener; and defensive […]

Reporting for duty

By Stephen Tsai on August 3, 2015

The first wave of Warriors — the newcomers — is scheduled to report to training camp today. There will be orientation sessions, physical examinations and dorm assignments. This actually is more of a formality. Many of the first-year Warriors have been on campus for several weeks. The freshmen have been enrolled in the six-week bridge program, which allows them to earn up to six credits while adjusting to college life. Offensive lineman J.R. Hensley, who enrolled in Summer Session I, […]
