All present

By Stephen Tsai on August 18, 2015

When the Warriors called roll this morning, wideout Isaiah Bernard, running back Melvin Davis and cornerback Dejaun Bulter all responded, “present.” Butler arrived yesterday morning. After flight delays, Davis and Bernard arrived last night. They were scheduled to undergo physical examinations this morning. If everything goes according to the wishes, the three JC transfers might be able to participate in this morning’s practice. They would not be allowed to practice in pads for a couple days because of the NCAA’s […]

Winning by a Mile

By Stephen Tsai on August 17, 2015

The offensive line won the Warriors Lip Sync Battle by a mile — actually, make that “8 Mile.” Recreating the movie’s freestyle battle between B-Rabbit (played by offensive lineman Luke Clements) and Papa Doc (right guard Dejon Allen), the o-line was declared last night’s winner. Kudos to right tackle R.J. Hollis’ portrayal as the scene’s announcer. * * * * * It was noted yesterday that the Warriors will play games in five time zones this season: > Eastern: Ohio […]

Glendale College wideout Isaiah Bernard has gained admission into UH and will join the Warriors tomorrow afternoon. Bernard, who already earned an AA, was waiting for a final grade in a math class to be posted to earn enough transferrable credits to enroll at UH. The grade was posted, clearing the way for Bernard. He had a 3.0 cumulative GPA at Glendale. Bernard leaves California tomorrow morning. After attending orientation sessions and undergoing a physical examination, he might be on […]

Warrior slideshow

Before the start of every practice on the grass field, each player touches the “Fight like a Warrior today!” sign. Of course, an experienced reporter (25th season on the UH football beat) know this is the best pre-practice tradition on those hot, hot training camp afternoons: On to the slide show:

Clobberin’ time

By Stephen Tsai on August 12, 2015

The first six practices of training camp operated in the so-called NFL style. That meant two huddles for 7-on-7 drills, and the emphasis of technique over hard contact in the 11-on-11 sessions. But the intensity cranks up with this afternoon’s practice, the first in full pads. The usual rules will apply, such as not hitting the quarterbacks (hey, this isn’t the New York Jets’ locker room). And the Warriors will continue to give every roster player some field time. The […]

Doing the right thing

By Stephen Tsai on August 11, 2015

The presumption is an average high school student does not have to pay for his education, food, shelter, clothing or basic essentials. Anything more — dates, movies, cell phones — is paid by parents/guardians or by getting a part-time job. An FBS scholarship covers a player’s education, food and shelter. But the essentials — toothpaste, soap, AXE, laundry, backpack, haircuts, etc. — aren’t covered. And the other expenses that make college life enjoyable also aren’t part of the scholarship. The […]
