Heated practices

By Stephen Tsai on August 26, 2015

A year ago, I was complaining to a friend that I couldn’t find my cell phone. She said: “Aren’t you talking to me on your cell right now?” So, yes, I’m old and forgetful, and really thought I filed a blog this morning when I didn’t. Now, where are my glasses? * * * * * It it’s humid eight days from now, then the Warriors will be ready. This morning’s practice was the muggiest of the year. But the […]

Role playing

By Stephen Tsai on August 25, 2015

The Warriors will be forming scout teams in preparation for the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado. That will mean that either Beau Reilly or Aaron Zwahlen will portray Colorado quarterback Sefo Liufau in drills against the Warriors’ first- and second-team defenses. Max Wittek and Ikaika Woolsey took all the reps in the team sessions yesterday. UH coach Norm Chow said the depth chart is still “fluid” and being evaluated, and that the top 68 spots have not been set for […]

Rain delay

By Stephen Tsai on August 24, 2015

The Warriors’ first 7 a.m. practice of the summer was postponed because of storm-like conditions. Today is the first day of UH’s fall semester. With the tight schedule of meetings and classes, the Warriors were seeking to reschedule practice to late afternoon. In past years, heavy showers forced the Warriors to practice at their “indoor facility” — Klum Gym, which is now used for intramurals, HPER classes, and UH Lab School events. Klum’s pull-out stands are long gone, much like […]

Happy campers

By Stephen Tsai on August 23, 2015

The weather was muggy, wet and weird. Practices were tough, with full-padded, scrimmage-like sessions on Thursday and Saturday. But the Warriors’ final week of training camp also featured offensive lineman Luke Clements’ breakout performance in the Lip Sync Battle, the addition of three players, an appearance by Spider-Man, and a cool conclusion. Last call

Today’s practice — the final one of training camp — also is the last chance for fans to watch the Warriors work out ahead of the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado. Today’s practice begins at 11 a.m. The Warriors will practice in the morning beginning on Monday. The exceptions are a late-afternoon practice at Aloha Stadium and a night practice at Ching field next week. * * * * * Before each practice, a freshman must lead the Warriors in […]

Warriors face decisions

By Stephen Tsai on August 21, 2015

As training camp nears an end, the Warriors soon will have to make some tough decisions. With the return to early-morning practices on Monday, there probably will be fewer reps to distribute. Also, UH will need to start forming scout teams in preparation for the Colorado game. Two unheralded players — defensive end Marquis Fairchild and safety Trey Linton — were impressive during yesterday’s rain-soaked, scrimmage-like sessions at Aloha Stadium. Fairchild, who redshirted as a freshman last year, had two sacks. […]

Fonua finds a way

By Stephen Tsai on August 20, 2015

If the new defensive culture were compared to the proverbial content level of a water glass, a pass breakup would be half-full, a dropped interception half-empty. It was why inside linebacker Benetton Fonua received playful ribbing when he failed to catch a pass following an acrobatic move during yesterday’s practice. But on the final play of practice, Fonua intercepted a red-zone pass and raced the other way to complete the pick-six, earning rousing cheers from defensive teammates. And that’s Fonua, […]

Times they are a-changin’

By Stephen Tsai on August 19, 2015

What time do you have? Sorry, it’s wrong. While today is the halfway point — 15th of 29 practices — in the countdown to the Sept. 3 opener, according to the Warrior calendar, it’s Sept. 2. That means weight-training in the morning, practice at mid-day, meals, meetings and, tonight, an excursion to see, “Straight Outta Compton.” Tomorrow, there are expected to be several game-day activities leading to the late-afternoon practice at Aloha Stadium. * * * * * The other […]
