Wittek expected to be ready

By Stephen Tsai on October 6, 2015

No Max Wittek? No worries. For the third consecutive Tuesday, quarterback Wittek was held out of contact drills to ease a sore leg. But coach Norm Chow said Wittek will start in Saturday’s homecoming game against San Diego State. Wittek, who was held out of the second half of the Boise State game, has started every game this year. Ikaika Woolsey took the No. 1 reps today, and Beau Reilly worked with the second team. Both were crisp. The fourth […]

Lessons from Boise

By Stephen Tsai on October 5, 2015

In 2001, Bill Belichick started what would become a motivational trend. Following a loss, he led his players to a field, where he buried the ball from that game. It was a symbolic “funeral” to the recent past. While the Warriors could find a lot to bury from this past weekend’s road trip, there are lessons to be learned from Boise, such as: > Street life: Sure, we all sit around and make potato-themed comments — a popular T-shirt, after […]

Back to the lab

Well, that was rough. We can all agree that the Warriors’ first three road games were expected to be difficult, although few imagined it would be 55-0 difficult. But stuff happens. It was one of those nights when everything went wrong. So, what’s next? For UH supporters, if there’s any consolation, the hard part is over. The Warriors now need to get healthy, regain their confidence and, well, win. At 2-3, the Warriors are where many expected at this point. […]

Game day: Boise State

By Stephen Tsai on October 3, 2015

Despite the projected late start — 8:26 p.m. MT kickoff? — the Warriors stuck to their usual game-day routine of a short walk involving the captains Lance Williams, Max Wittek and Ben Clarke exchanging high-fives, fist-bumps and hugs with their teammates. After that, media relations director Derek Inouchi and the Blog Host went to the Boise Farmers Market behind our hotel. Derek bought his son a “Darth Tater” T-shirt; Blog Host bought buffalo and elk jerky.

‘Bows arrive in Boise

By Stephen Tsai on October 2, 2015

BOISE — After spending overnight in Los Angeles, where they had meetings and study hall, the Warriors arrived this afternoon in Boise. They checked into the downtown Boise hotel, unloaded equipment, changed into practice gear, then went Albertsons Stadium for a quick look at the famed blue turf. After that, the Warriors practiced at Rocky Mountain High. Here’s the slide show:

No rest for the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2015

After today’s 65-minute practice, the Warriors prepared for their second road trip in as many weeks. They were scheduled to depart this afternoon. The Warriors are following what has become a trend in college football. For a Saturday game, they have a light practice on Thursday, then a modified practice on Friday. In the past, the Warriors would have only a walk-through session on Friday. By returning to Honolulu between road games, the Warriors were able to attend classes and […]

Tuning up for a road trip

By Stephen Tsai on September 30, 2015

After completing today’s 85-minute practice, the Warriors appear to be at full availability for Saturday’s road game against Boise State. Keelan Ewaliko, who missed the Wisconsin game because of a family death, was back returning kickoffs. The Warriors are not expected to make any significant lineup changes. Safety Damien Packer worked as a nickelback with the No. 1 defense. Safety Daniel Lewis and cornerback Ne’Quan Phillips, who was held out of last week’s game to rest an ailment, also can […]

Food chain

By Stephen Tsai on September 29, 2015

Under head coach Norm Chow, the Warriors — players, assistant coaches and staff — are well fed. After morning practices, there are hotel-worthy buffets. On road trips, there are hotel buffets. There are snacks for pre-game and halftime, and meal boxes for after the game. Before boarding the plane on this past road trip, each Warrior was handed a bag containing sandwiches, fruits, water and Gatorade. On the eve of home games, the Warriors dine on a meal provided by […]
