Heading east

By Stephen Tsai on October 22, 2015

At the end of this morning’s practice at Ching field, the Warriors gathered in a circle, then let out rousing applause for the scout players. With a few exceptions, most of the scouts will remain in Hawaii for Saturday’s road game against Nevada. The Warriors devoted all of today’s practice to competing against the scouts who were portraying the Wolf Pack’s offensive and defensive players. Because of injuries and other circumstances, the Warriors’ travel roster is 62 players — six […]

Video gamer

By Stephen Tsai on October 21, 2015

The UH grass practice field, like a casino, is equipped with wide-eyed cameras. The videos show who is working hard, who is missing assignments, who is hanging out too long by the Gatorade container. Zeno Choi is supposed to be just another freshman walk-on wearing a scout jersey. But he stood out in videos, partially because he is 6 feet 3 and 270 pounds, mostly because he has agile feet that never stop moving. Choi was added to last week’s […]

Wittek, Tupai back practicing

By Stephen Tsai on October 20, 2015

Quarterback Max Wittek was back competing at practice today — and with the first-team offense. After starting the first six games, Wittek did not play against New Mexico because of knee ailments. Left guard Elijah Tupai, who also missed Saturday’s game, practiced with the first team today. Eperone Moananu had a successful first day at nose tackle after moving from the offensive line. He made all four tackles in a series during the team session. Moananu, who is from American […]

Family ties

By Stephen Tsai on October 19, 2015

One of the best things about road trips is the eve of the game. In the hotel lobby, family members from different points of the country will spend time with their sons. At Wisconsin, Ne’Quan Phillips’ mother and brother were there. Dr. Lynn Zwahlen leaves his dental practice in Modesto, Calif., to watch his son hold a clipboard during games. Quarterback Aaron Zwahlen is on track to redshirt this season. The past weekend, Jason Wright made the 8-hour drive from […]

Warriors: What’s next?

By Stephen Tsai on October 18, 2015

The Warriors have little time to brood about yesterday’s whiplash — a 22-yard field goal was wide, then New Mexico went 80 yards the other way for the winning touchdown. The Warriors actually had a sound strategy in the fourth quarter: Grind yards, eat time. But in this mixed metaphor, the Warriors could not sink the putt. So what’s next? The Warriors’ wish is better health. They were without quarterback Max Wittek, running back Mel Davis, wideout Quinton Pedroza, left […]

Game day: New Mexico

By Stephen Tsai on October 17, 2015

Albuquerque — The forecast called for thunderstorms today, but we’re consulting with a better source. Head athletic trainer Eric Okasaki said the weather will not be a problem. (Hint UH fans: If there’s a major injury, it’s Okasaki attending to the player.) Max Wittek was in street clothes during warmups and is not expected to play today. No official word, but the expectation is the starting ball-handling guys will be running back Paul Harris, slotback Dylan Collie, tight end Dakota […]

Football vs. futbol

By Stephen Tsai on October 15, 2015

The Warriors closed practice today with surprise guests — the Rainbow Wahine soccer team. They then engaged in a dance-off. Malissa Shadle did the worm. Lance Williams did the splits. Even coach Norm Chow danced. Afterward, Chow treated both teams to malasadas. The Warriors are scheduled to depart this afternoon for their fourth road trip of the season. Among the true freshmen on the travel roster are quarterback Aaron Zwahlen, cornerback Rojesterman Farris and defensive tackle Zeno Choi.
