Air (Force) fare

By Stephen Tsai on October 30, 2015

Proof that the government has spending restrictions can be found with this weekend’s football game. It would appear logical that Air Force would rely largely on its athletic budget, funded largely by taxpayers, to pay for this week’s travel to Hawaii. But the Falcons, like other Mountain West Conference visiting teams, are accepting a travel subsidy from UH. The payout is roughly $175,000, and is part of the agreement allowing UH to join the league in 2012. This might be […]

On to the next phase

By Stephen Tsai on October 29, 2015

Jared Leaf overcome a stomach ailment that caused him to lose more than 25 pounds as a UH freshman. In 2014, he was hospitalized in critical conditions from severe burns suffered in an apartment fire in San Jose. But it was the effects of post-concussion syndrome that forced Leaf to announce his retirement from football today. Leaf departed UH after the 2012 season to join San Jose State, but he always maintained ties with the Warriors. After last year’s game […]

Tsk, tsk

By Stephen Tsai on October 28, 2015

We all know that coach, the after-the-facter who scolds a player for making a mistake that he was not warned in advance about not making. State lawmakers have become that coach. It appears this is the scenario: UH goofs, then lawmakers sift through news reports, read the outraged comments sections, then summon UH officials for a public — and long-winded — scolding. And then everybody feels good about themselves, well, except for the ones who lost their jobs for making […]

Bounce-back Tuesday

By Stephen Tsai on October 27, 2015

Inspired by tight end Harold Moleni’s speech, the Warriors went out and had an animated practice this morning. The defense, in particular, was loud and riled. The practice ended when defensive tackle Ka‘au Gifford raced the other way with a turnover. Earlier in practice, Gifford appeared to have suffered a knee injury. He was helped onto a cart, and as he was being driven off the field, the other d-linemen razzed him. Gifford yelled that he was just getting ice […]

Health-plan change

By Stephen Tsai on October 26, 2015

One of the busiest members of the UH athletic department — Dr. Gale Prentiss — is leaving as team physician at the end of this football season. The change will coincide with her move from University of Hawaii Health Services to Kaiser Permanente. The unusually high number of injuries and ailments have kept the physicians and athletic trainers busy this season. We wish her the best.

X(rays) and Ohs

By Stephen Tsai on October 25, 2015

For the final 32 minutes yesterday, the Warriors did not play well, did not coach well and, during an exchange with the side judge, did not argue well. That’s on them. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they are not well. Two players have played the entire season despite foot fractures. A running back has been running on two sprained ankles. A walk-on freshman earned significant time on the defensive line yesterday. The two starting safeties in training camp did not play […]

Game day: Nevada

By Stephen Tsai on October 24, 2015

Reno — It’s another must-win game … for both Nevada and Hawaii. The Warriors, who practiced at Hug High yesterday, had to adjust to today’s early start. Instead of separate breakfast and pre-game meal, it was lumped into one buffet. But, like all games, it began with the morning walk: And the longest line was at the hotel’s Starbucks …

“Biggest Little City in the World”

By Stephen Tsai on October 23, 2015

RENO — I’m not sure if Reno’s self-description — “Biggest Little City in the World” — is humble or boastful. I do know it’s a gorgeous day, with temperatures in the 50s. The Warriors arrived last night, and will practice today. I’ll post photos from the workout. Meanwhile, we all got upgraded on the red-eye flight. One problem: My seat faced the rear of the plane: Which meant I had a lovely view of these guys for five hours:
