Rollin’ in Vegas

By Stephen Tsai on November 6, 2015

LAS VEGAS — For the first time this season, the Warriors had a full practice at the site of a road game when they worked out at Sam Boyd Stadium. Before arriving, UH’s equipment specialists raised the Hawaiian flag at the stadium.

Put on notice

By Stephen Tsai on November 5, 2015

It is easy to overlook that schools don’t fire head coaches, they fire coaching staffs. A couple days after Norm Chow was dismissed as head coach, his assistant coaches and staff received termination notices from UH. Or, as one coach said: “We got our love letters.” They will be paid through the end of their one-year contracts, which usually expire around March 1. The notices are standard procedure. But it still is a reminder of the sport’s fragile security and […]

Woolsey is named starter … for now

By Stephen Tsai on November 4, 2015

Three days after changing the head coach, the Warriors changed the No. 1 quarterback. Ikaika Woolsey today was named the starting quarterback for Saturday’s road game against UNLV — sort of. “I told Ikaika I’m not afraid to pull the trigger and put Max in,” interim head coach Chris Naeole said of Max Wittek, who started eight of nine games this season. “It could be game day (and) I could change my mind. Right now (Woolsey) is our guy, and […]

Look backward

By Stephen Tsai on November 3, 2015

Sure, the Warriors are heading in a new direction with the coaching change. But maybe it’s time to go backward, too. It’s time to bring back: > … Vili the Warrior. Let’s bang the drums for the best mascot in the program’s history. > … The cannon. While we’re at it, whatever happened to the touchdown cannon at Aloha Stadium? And no wise cracks about needing touchdowns … > … Ben Yee. Not sure what’s the deal with him, but […]

The last goodbye

By Stephen Tsai on November 2, 2015

Norm Chow addressed the Warriors for the final time this morning, encouraging them to continue to work hard on the field and in the classroom. When he finished, interim head coach Chris Naeole requested the Warriors’ traditional gesture of appreciation. The players and coaches gave three loud claps for Chow.

Norm Chow fired

By Stephen Tsai on November 1, 2015

Norm Chow was “relieved of his duties” as head coach today, athletic director David Matlin announced today. Chris Naeole will serve as interim head coach. Naeole, who coaches the offensive line, was promoted to associate head coach this past summer.

Everything but the wins

By Stephen Tsai on November 1, 2015

Norm Chow is a good guy. Except for stretches — sometimes weeks — when he’s mad and doesn’t talk to me, he’s helpful, accommodating and one of the best to cover. (Perspective: This is my 34th year with a daily newspaper, and 28th as a UH beat writer, including 25 covering UH football.) He barks but doesn’t bite. He’s very good to his players, his assistant coaches, and his staff. (He might not be kind to administrators, but that’s mostly […]

Game day: Air Force

By Stephen Tsai on October 31, 2015

Sure, Air Force is a misnomer. The Falcons run 85 percent of the time. Of course, that means they also can lull defenses into packing the tackle box, opening the way for play-action passes — Karson Roberts is very good with the bait-and-switch — and the double passes. The backs hit the dive very quick. When defenses contract, then it opens the perimeter, particularly with cut-blockers leading the way. Know how difficult it is to slow the jet sweeps? Imagine […]
