2016 vision

By Stephen Tsai on November 22, 2015

I apologize for the delay in posting. I was going to write about last night’s game or why high school pride matters in attendance and … well, after couple drafts, I got nothing. So, here’s a look ahead to 2016: 2016 Seniors: > Quarterback: Ikaika Woolsey. > Running backs: Mel Davis, Paul Harris, Steven Lakalaka. > Slotback: Makoa Camanse-Stevens. > Wideouts: Isaiah Bernard, Marcus Kemp. > Offensive linemen: RJ Hollis, Leo Koloamatangi. > Nose tackles: Remy McClam, Kory Rasmussen. > […]

Game day: San Jose State

By Stephen Tsai on November 21, 2015

The old man must be snoring because it’s been raining (islandwide) and pouring (on the Windward side) the past three days. It it keeps up, expect a running battle. In what appears to be this season’s theme, the Warriors will face another quality running back. Tyler Ervin is a quick and tough runner who also is a threat as a receiver and returner. The Warriors might utilize the ground game more because 1) There’s no experienced quarterback behind starter Ikaika […]

Black-and-Blue Friday

By Stephen Tsai on November 20, 2015

It’s operation day for quarterback Max Wittek (right knee) and kickoff returner Keelan Ewaliko (knee). Wittek’s absence leaves Ikaika Woolsey as the Warriors’ only experienced quarterback. Beau Reilly, now No. 2, has not taken a snap in a game in his two UH seasons. Aaron Zwahlen is redshirting. Nobody seems to know if that walk-on scout quarterback is still on the team. Ewaliko will be missed as a kickoff returner. UH fans also will have to wait ’til next year […]

A real highlight video

By Stephen Tsai on November 19, 2015

Between the third and fourth quarters last week, the highlight video of the season was shown on the Aloha Stadium scoreboard — UH players dancing along to the Bruno Mars/Mark Ronson collaboration of “Uptown Funk.” The video has gone viral, with links on several sites, including the NCAA home page. Interim head coach Chris Naeole was looking for a way to spice up the crowd entering the fourth quarter. “You can’t have drudgery every day,” said Naeole, who was seeking […]

Dearly departed

By Stephen Tsai on November 18, 2015

A long year became shorter for four more Warriors. Quarterback Max Wittek, wideout/returner Keelan Ewaliko, tight end Dakota Torres and defensive back Dejaun Butler will miss the final two games because of injuries. Add them to this list: > Nose tackle Samiuela Akoteu — Suffered season-ending foot injury in training camp. > Defensive tackle Mike Andrade — Medically retired. > Slotback/running back Samson Anguay — Medically retired. > Outside linebacker Jeremy Castro — Sidelined because of neck stinger. > Defensive […]

It takes two

By Stephen Tsai on November 17, 2015

I’ve made many bad decisions — choosing Beta over VHS, singing at karaoke nights, eating that funny-smelling burrito before the UNLV game — so, sure, maybe a little advice here and there would be helpful. (By the way, the key is “helpful” so stop with the private messages that Beau Reilly should start at quarterback. I like Beau Reilly, he’s a good guy and quarterback, but I don’t make QB decisions.) But I digress. Anyhoo, yesterday UH announced an “advisory […]

Restocking the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on November 16, 2015

Interim head coach Chris Naeole spoke of the emptied cupboard, a metaphor for the depletion caused by injuries and other circumstances. In looking ahead — way ahead to 2016 — the Warriors appear to have the essentials to restock. Of course, a lot depends on the next head coach and the system he will employ. But here are the in-program players who will be available: > Quarterback: Aaron Zwahlen needed this redshirt season to get rid of the rust after […]

Keeping the faith

By Stephen Tsai on November 15, 2015

After more than 35 years of marriage, Lysa and Johnny Kono still gaze at each other with love-at-first-sight affection. Their love for each other — and for the UH football team — was on display last night at Aloha Stadium. There were 3 minutes remaining in a blowout loss, the wind had joined the rain, and the fans in their section already had left, if they had even shown up at all. But the Konos, covered in ponchos that resembled […]
