May we suggest …

By Stephen Tsai on December 6, 2015

This is the first week Nick Rolovich can add newcomers to his staff. While there is a large selection — he joked he has 700 new friends since being hired — he also is taking his time to vet and analyze the candidates. Not sure whom he’ll pick, but I’ve always liked these guys: > Phil Austin: The former UH safety is now Fullerton College’s associate head coach. He previously was a quality-control coach at UCLA assisting Adrian Klemm with recruiting […]

JJ, Glanville reunion set

By Stephen Tsai on December 5, 2015

June Jones and Jerry Glanville will be reunited for the East-West Shrine Game in January. Jones said he has been named a head coach. Jones then selected Jerry Glanville as his defensive coordinator. “It’ll be fun,” Jones told the Warrior Beat of the Jan 23 all-star game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburgh, Fla. Glanville said he and Jones have a standing arrangement. “When one person asks, the other says, ‘Yes,’” Glanville told the Warrior Beat. They worked together when […]

2 prep players renew UH commitments

By Stephen Tsai on December 4, 2015

The H-2 pipeline has been repaved. Mililani High quarterback McKenzie Milton and Leilehua defensive lineman Netane Muti reconfirmed their UH commitments during home visits with head coach Nick Rolovich last night. Both seniors had pledged to UH earlier this year. Muti said he began discussions with other schools after not hearing from UH for nearly a month. The Warriors had placed a self-imposed moratorium on recruiting after Norm Chow was fired as head coach on Nov. 1. The restrictions were […]

Easy out

By Stephen Tsai on December 3, 2015

Transitions can be difficult, but UH has been helpful in easing the way for the coaches who won’t be retained on the new football staff. The coaches who will not be retained have been told to be “accessible,” if needed, although it is unlikely they have to be physically available. Their contracts run through March 1. Na Koa also will pay for coaches to attend the American Football Coaches Association’s convention Jan. 10-13 in San Antonio. Na Koa will cover […]

Picture perfect

By Stephen Tsai on December 2, 2015

The past couple years, the Warriors have relied on the man upstairs. At every practice, Kenny Cheong is on the portable platform, 25 feet above ground, videoing every football drill. When the coaches talk about having to review “the film,” they’re talking about the work of Cheong, as well as the other student members of video coordinator Dory Kong’s crew. When Chris Naeole speaks of the “eye in the sky,” well, two of them belong to Cheong. The job is […]

Return to Pride Rock

By Stephen Tsai on December 1, 2015

In review: > Nick Rolovich will oversee the program, and assign play-calling duties to the yet-to-be-hired coordinators. > “I want to be aggressive, but I also want to be smart,” Rolovich said of the offensive preference. “I want to get a good, clear evaluation of our talent level and where our skill may be best used. I think the quarterback-read game is here to stay in college football. We were kind of going in that direction in ’11 with (Bryant) […]

Rolo reunion

By Stephen Tsai on November 30, 2015

Nick Rolovich is back in Hawaii and, early this morning, back on campus for his first official day as head coach. Rolovich was scheduled to meet with the players at 8 this morning, and will be (re)introduced during a 10 a.m. news conference. Speculation is two members of the 2015 staff will be retained, and also there are talks to bring back a former UH coach who is with a traditionally good FBS program. * * * * * From […]
