Numbers game

By Stephen Tsai on December 14, 2015

UH has started a project seeking the best Warriors for each jersey number. For example, No. 1 could be Travis LaBoy, Ryan Grice-Mullins and Greg Salas. Suggestions?

Slot back?

By Stephen Tsai on December 13, 2015

There still is a lot of work to do, but it appears there’s a possibility slotback Samson Anguay will eligible to compete in 2016 as a sixth-year senior. Anguay’s injury-filled past — three surgeries for two ACL injuries — is the biggest boost in his quest. A medical hardship usually is granted for a player who has missed at least two seasons because of injury; Anguay has missed at least three. Anguay is a 2010 Campbell High graduated who grayshirted that […]

Hair apparent; meet Rolo

By Stephen Tsai on December 12, 2015

Football recruits who sign up with the Warriors are eligible for: > An all-expense trip to Sydney … and Ann Arbor, Tucson, San Jose, Fresno, Colorado Springs and San Diego. > A free education in paradise. > And any hair length or style. Yep, the Warriors are going back to the days of Troy — Polamalu, that is — and lifting the restrictions on hair lengths. It’s part of the dual purpose of teaching young people to be responsible but still […]

Busy weekend for Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on December 11, 2015

It will be a hectic weekend for the Warriors, who will host a couple recruits. The Warriors’ wish is to sign mid-academic-year transfers on Thursday, the first day of the signing period for JC players seeking to enroll in January. Sunday also is the final day (of this recruiting period) for coaches to conduct home visits with high school prospects. And, of course, new offensive coordinator Zak Hill arrives tomorrow. * * * * * * * * * *

It’s official: UH hires OC, signs Ulu-Perry

By Stephen Tsai on December 10, 2015

Zak Hill, Eastern Washington’s passing-game coordinator, has been hired as the Warriors’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The goal with the Eagles, Hill said, was “to play fast and throw it around a little bit.” Hill said he will try mix concepts of the Eagles’ offense and Nevada’s schemes. In Reno, UH coach Nick Rolovich ran a spread offense out of the pistol formation. Rolovich played — and coached — in the four-wide offense at UH. Hill said he arrives […]

Reinforcements summoned for recruiting battle

By Stephen Tsai on December 10, 2015

Those guys with the sartorial elegance? They are Warrior intern Bo Montgomery and graduate assistants Ramsen Golpashin, Garrett Scott and Derek Deardorff. While Nick Rolovich builds his coaching staff, those four have been activated as recruiters. They have met the three requirements: 1) Athletic department’s approval, 2) Passing grade on the recruiting-manual test, and 3) Dress nicely. The in-person recruiting period ends next week, coinciding with the Dec. 16 start to the mid-academic-year signing period. The Warriors’ wish is to […]

A “good dude”

By Stephen Tsai on December 9, 2015

In a game of word association, if someone said, “Joshua Leonard,” the automatic response would be “good.” He was a good family man, good football teammate and, for two UH seasons, a good player. In 2007, his first season after transferring from a JC, Leonard blocked a field-goal attempt late in the third quarter to spur the Warriors to a 35-28 victory over Washington. The next season, he started 12 games at defensive tackle, amassing eight tackles for losses. He […]

Ulu-Perry expected to join Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on December 8, 2015

All signs point to offensive lineman Fred Ulu-Perry joining the Warriors, according to people familiar with the situation. Ulu-Perry was granted a conditional release from his UCLA scholarship, opening the way for him to transfer to UH. He left the Bruins two weeks ago. He needs to pass fall classes — which shouldn’t be a problem — to finalize the release. As a Saint Louis School senior last year, Ulu-Perry was ranked as ESPN.com’s No. 1 offensive guard and Scout.com’s […]
