Ouch!

By Stephen Tsai on December 22, 2015

Well, so much for the benefits of a self-imposed punishment. The fellas have the UH/NCAA story here: UH basketball sanctions Barring an appeal, the circus is leaving town. But like all circuses, there are people left to clean up the droppings. That mess is the 2016-17 season. As Ferd Lewis reports, a lawyer said his client is very pleased: Arnold story

Paterson promoted

By Stephen Tsai on December 21, 2015

Being a compliance officer is under-appreciated work. UH showed its appreciation recently, promoting Amanda Paterson to assistant athletic director. AD David Matlin confirmed the move. Paterson was born in Australia but raised in the UH system, first joining as a Rainbow Wahine soccer goalie and then ascending from student worker to compliance worker through years of hard work. She will continue to oversee the compliance department.

Circle these days on the 2016 calendar: Tuesday, March 29 and Saturday, April 30. Coach Nick Rolovich confirmed the Warriors’ first of 15 spring practices will be on March 29. With the NCAA’s 34-day window for spring training, the Warriors will end workouts on April 30. Rolovich said he expects a spring game (based on available players) or, at least, a spring fling for the final practice. Rolovich also said spring practices will be open to the public.

UH set to hire DL coach Suiaunoa

By Stephen Tsai on December 19, 2015

All signs point to Legi Suiaunoa joining the Warriors as the defensive line coach. Suiaunoa, 37, is a highly regarded technician who has coached Montana’s d-linemen since 2011. In 2015, the Grizzlies amassed 102 backfield tackles, including 43 sacks. In 2014, Montana was seventh among FCS schools in sacks (3.2 per game). Suiaunoa won a junior national championship as a Palomar linebacker in 1997. He played linebacker at Nevada from 1998 to 2001. He served as a graduate assistant at […]

The Warriors are expected to announce new coaching hires as early as this weekend. Nick Rolovich yesterday conducted Skype interviews with six candidates for wide receivers coach. * * * * * Hey, I have to take care of some personal business. I’ll be back soon.

Spring ahead

By Stephen Tsai on December 17, 2015

It appears the Nick Rolovich-led Warriors will make their on-field debut as early as late March. Rolovich said he wants to start spring practice after “the ides of March,” but not have training interrupted with the school’s spring break. UH’s break is scheduled for March 21-25. (The NCAA permits Division I teams 15 spring practices within a window of 34 consecutive days. The exceptions to the consecutive days are university-sanctioned vacations or examination days.) Following that calendar and Rolovich’s preferences, […]

Countdown to 2016

By Stephen Tsai on December 16, 2015

The Warriors appear to have 15 remaining scholarships for the 2016 recruiting class. On last night’s call-the-coach show, Nick Rolovich said there were 19 available scholarships when he was hired as head coach. (UH is allowed to offer 25 initials each year. In most cases, an initial is a scholarship to a first-year Warrior. But a walk-on counts as an initial if he receives a scholarship before being in the program at least two years.) UH’s 2016 initials include two […]

Making a great last impression

By Stephen Tsai on December 15, 2015

A week after Fred Ulu-Perry finalized a transfer from UCLA, the state’s top offensive lineman — Kapolei’s Toleafoa Sean Auwae — announced on Twitter he is taking an official UH visit on the final weekend of January. Auwae de-committed on verbal pledge to UCLA. The Warriors are employing the time-tested strategy of the importance of a great last impression. The final open recruiting day is Sunday, Jan. 31, before the dead period leading to signing day on Feb. 3. The […]
