Match day: King

By Stephen Tsai on January 7, 2016

The volleyball Warriors open the 2016 season tonight against King in the first round of the Outrigger Resorts Invitational in the Stan Sheriff Center. Here’s what we know … … Um, uh, well … OK, OK, King is a bit of a mystery. The Tornado — that’s a singular collective noun, like Cardinal, Heat and Wolf Pack — is a member of Conference Carolinas. King is a Division II school located in Bristol, Tenn. The Warriors, meanwhile, return starters in […]

Warriors land cornerback

By Stephen Tsai on January 6, 2016

The Warriors have secured a commitment from Upland (Calif.) High cornerback Zach Wilson. If Wilson’s application is approved, he could enroll at UH for this spring semester, which begins on Monday, and participate in the Warriors’ offseason conditioning program and spring practice. Wilson is a 2015 Upland High graduate who attended a junior college as a part-time student the past fall semester. Because his eligibility clock has not triggered, he has five years to play four UH seasons. Newcomers: > […]

Defense mechanism

Newly hired defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa arrives in town tomorrow afternoon, but he already has been on the clock for about a week. He has spent hours evaluating videos of dozens of football prospects. “We’re building this class,” said Lempa, who would like to add to the defensive secondary and defensive line. The Warriors were mostly in a 3-4 base the past two seasons. Lempa, who was Boston College’s defensive secondary coach the past three seasons, is seeking to implement […]

Early plans

By Stephen Tsai on January 4, 2016

Don’t stay up late if you plan on checking out the Warriors’ spring practices this April. Plans call for the Warriors to conduct 14 morning practices. The 15th, of course, will be the spring festival. All practices will be open to the public. Coach Nick Rolovich has not finalized workout times for the fall, but it appears the morning practices will be the preference. The Warriors had morning practices when Rolovich was a UH quarterback in 2000-2001 and quarterbacks coach/offensive […]

Positive thoughts for a good guy

By Stephen Tsai on January 3, 2016

You think you don’t know Aaron Iyomasa, but you actually do. If you have watched a local telecast of a UH sporting event the past 30 years, the odds are Iyomasa had something to do with it. Video, production, direction, prep work, post-production … Iyomasa served many roles for the Home Team and, now, OC Sports. He’s going through a difficult medical time now. If you have a free moment, please pray a prayer, wish a wish or think a […]

Dual challenge

By Stephen Tsai on January 2, 2016

More than two decades ago, Tommy Heffernan was a multi-skilled athlete who played for the UH football and baseball teams. Once again, Heffernan is multi-tasking, serving as the head of UH’s strength program while also directing the football Warriors’ strength-and-conditioning activities. Heffernan and head coach Nick Rolovich are seeking a replacement for Gary Beemer, who recently joined Rutgers as a strength/conditioning coach. The Warriors’ off-sesason conditioning program begins Jan. 25. UH’s overall strength program, like other departments, operates on a […]

A new year

By Stephen Tsai on January 1, 2016

Although it appeared the selection process was set to a deliberate pace, Nick Rolovich actually completed his coaching staff in an earlier time than his two predecessors. Greg McMackin, who was hired in January 2008, had the benefit of a Solomon-like split in which half the staff (and linebacker Solomon Elimimian, for that matter) remained and half followed June Jones to SMU. Norm Chow, who was hired on Dec. 21, 2011, did not complete his staff until mid-January 2012. Rolovich […]

Warriors hire Lempa, 3 coaches

By Stephen Tsai on December 31, 2015

The Warriors have hired Kevin Lempa as defensive coordinator, according to sources. Also: > Norfolk State assistant Kefense Hynson has been named receivers coach. > Sean Duggan, a Boston College defensive assistant, will coach the UH linebackers. > Jason Cvercko, who was Nevada’s coordinator of recruiting operations, will be UH’s recruiting coordinator, a non-coaching position. * * * * * Lempa is “fired up”: http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/sports-breaking/new-uh-defensive-coordinator-fired-up-in-return-to-warriors/
