Warrior Beat blog is on medical leave

By Stephen Tsai on January 15, 2016

Aloha. It’s not much of a secret, but I’ll be undergoing open-heart surgery next Friday. I think it’s something like five or six bypasses. (Things got a little blurry when I tried to add up the bill in my head.) Because of the prep work (and subsequent crankiness), the Warrior Beat blog will go on hiatus beginning today. Barring unforeseen complications — Kramer dropping a Junior Mint from the observation deck? — the absence will be about eight weeks. If you […]

Let the games begin

By Stephen Tsai on January 14, 2016

Aloha ball began with last night’s draft of UH football players. The coaches selected 16 players to lead eight teams. The captains then drafted teammates to fill their teams. The rules are this: Points are added for good deeds, such as a group GPA of 3.0 or better, selfie of group dressed in theme costumes at another UH sport’s game, donating blood, keeping the campus clean, and so forth. Points are deducted for tardiness to meetings or classes, poor grades, […]

Glass house is half empty

By Stephen Tsai on January 13, 2016

David needed help in paying mounting financial obligations. He asked his uncle Sam for help. Sam went on and on about David’s money management problems in the past and how he always would have money problems. David noted how much he had helped Sam, recommending friends to patronize Sam’s business. But Sam went on and on with the lecture, even saying David should learn to live on Vienna Sausages instead of steak, or something like that. After a while, it […]

The Australia plan

By Stephen Tsai on January 12, 2016

With the dead period expiring at 11:59.99 on Wednesday night, the mad scramble for football prospects begins. (I guess we all had to wait for Alabama and Clemson to get settled.) But the Warriors proved last week it is thinking outside the geographical box by planting its recruiting flag on Australia soil. For the Warriors, the future is Australia (and not just because the country is 21 hours ahead.) Here’s why the pipeline makes sense: > Geography 101: Even with […]

Back to school

By Stephen Tsai on January 11, 2016

UH is back in session today. The Warriors had a team meeting last night to emphasize academics and training. The Warriors’ offseason conditioning program begins on Jan. 25, and runs to just before spring break. Spring training opens March 29. * * * * * The volleyball Warriors moved up two places, to No. 5, in the AVCA national poll following their sweep in the Outrigger Resorts Invitational. The Warriors did not lose a set in three matches, Charlie Wade […]

No slowing 83-year-old Mouse

By Stephen Tsai on January 10, 2016

This morning, 83-year-old Mouse Davis joked, “To tell you the truth, I don’t do a hell of a lot. … I’ve been sitting on my hands a lot, and wondering, What do I do with these?” But Davis’ schedule has been hectic. In the past year, he was commissioner/head coach of a pro football league based in Palm Springs, consultant to Portland State’s football team, and occasional golfer. The Warrior Beat trapped Mouse for a few thoughts. On prized pupil […]

Warriors land versatile Australian player

By Stephen Tsai on January 9, 2016

Things are looking up Down Under. The Warriors secured a commitment from Max Hendrie, a versatile rugby/football player from Sydney, Australia. Paul Manera, a former Warrior who serves as mentor, said Hendrie is 6 feet 4, 245 pounds and capable of running 40 yards in 4.53 seconds. Hendrie is a December 2014 graduate of The Scots College, a Sydney high school. He has trained during the so-called “gap year,” the period between high school and college in Australia. Manera said […]

Match night: Harvard

By Stephen Tsai on January 8, 2016

The volleyball Warriors were overpowering in their season-opening sweep of King last night. Each of the scores was 25-14. King managed only six natural points, including one in the final set. And Stijn van Tilburg had a memorable debut, with a 14-0-15 line. The Warrior also mixed it up a few times, with setter Jennings Franciskovic blocking middle and middle Hendrik Mol at the pin. For the Warriors, it gets a little tougher tonight against Harvard. But the Crimson brought […]
