Dee for determination

By Stephen Tsai on May 8, 2016

Consider this: Former UH cornerback Dee Maggitt’s six interceptions in seven games place second among Indoor Football League defenders this season. Consider this: Maggitt made an interception in his second UH game, in 2011, then went the rest of his college career — 42 games, including 19 starts — without another pick. “I’m finally healthy,” said Maggitt, who is in his first season with the Tri-Cities Fever. “I’m finally playing healthy.” Maggitt had a bittersweet stay at UH. His best […]

The price of paradise

By Stephen Tsai on May 7, 2016

Last year, Gov. Ige and I had chatted about UH sports. OK, OK, it was for about 30 seconds. And it was outside a rest room during the intermission of a men’s volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center. He asked me something about UH football. I did not ask him anything about the location of my state-tax-refund check. From this brief encounter, I extrapolated, at least in my mind, that Gov. Ige has an interest in UH sports. That […]

Warriors’ early-bird special

By Stephen Tsai on May 6, 2016

Yeah, yeah, after constant requests, here’s the skinny on the new Hawaii exemption. > The rule: The year an FBS team plays in Hawaii, it may open the regular season five days earlier than the usual Thursday opening to the NCAA football schedule. If Hawaii has six home games, for instance, Hawaii and those six teams may start earlier. Rule goes into effect this Aug. 1. > But wait: While the FBS has fully approved the rule, the FCS has […]

Clay built

By Stephen Tsai on May 5, 2016

Former UH safety Charles Clay is a self-made player — CLAYBUILT, as his Twitter handle says. A two-time walk-on — first at SMU, then at UH before going on scholarship as a senior in 2013 — Clay parlayed an impressive showing at pro day in 2014 into a tryout and then free-agent contract with the Green Bay Packers. (He was cut by the Packers at the end of training camp.) This week, Clay signed a two-year contract with the Hamilton […]

2 former Warriors have CFL hopes

By Stephen Tsai on May 4, 2016

Former UH linebackers Julian Gener and Lance Williams are setting their pro aspirations to the north. Gener was invited to a tryout with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday in Oakland. Williams, who participated in the BC Lions’ mini-combine this past weekend in Seattle, is awaiting word on whether he will be invited to training camp. “Hopefully, it all turns out well,” Gener said. Saskatchewan offensive coordinator Mike Scheper invited Gener to the audition. As Portland State’s coach in 2013, […]

Not over, Hill

By Stephen Tsai on May 3, 2016

There was little known about what Tigi Hill did the past few years, but one thing is certain about this week: He will be auditioning with the Indianapolis Colts. Hill, who twice signed with UH but never joined the team, has secured a free-agent tryout with the Colts. He reports on Thursday. “If they like me, they’ll sign me by the weekend,” Hill said. “If not, I’ll keep trying.” Hill was a highly regarded prospect as a Kahuku senior. He […]

UH football: Creating a buzz in the Beehive state

By Stephen Tsai on May 2, 2016

When Nick Rolovich was Nevada’s offensive coordinator, one of his recruiting areas was Utah. There are five Utah residents on the Wolf Pack’s spring roster. Rolovich is continuing the Hawaii-Utah pipeline that the Warriors re-established in 2012. Quarterbacks coach Craig Stutzmann, who was at Weber State for two seasons, is the Warriors’ point recruiter in Utah. Utah is an attractive recruiting area for UH. A 2013 report estimated that 13.3 percent of Utah’s population identified as Polynesian. There are five […]

UH football: Coaches hit the road

By Stephen Tsai on May 1, 2016

Nine UH football coaches will travel to the mainland today on recruiting trips. Some will be on the road for as long as two weeks during this evaluation period. After that, the UH coaches will again visit every high school football team in Hawaii. Head coach Nick Rolovich, meanwhile, is headed to Arizona for Mountain West Conference meetings. Asked if he’ll pack golf clubs, Rolovich said, “No, I’ve got work to do. I’ll bring my computer.”
