Hendrie continues to wait for NCAA approval

By Stephen Tsai on August 11, 2016

The face of the Sydney Cup is confused. With nine days before the Warriors depart for Australia for the season-opener, Sydney-raised Max Hendrie still has not received eligibility clearance from the NCAA. It has been a frustrating eight-month process for Hendrie, who appears to meet all the NCAA qualifications. But he has been repeatedly asked to submit more and more documents. In the meantime, Hendrie has been told he cannot practice with the Warriors until his situation is resolved. Hendrie, […]

UH football: Holtz delivers pep talk

By Stephen Tsai on August 10, 2016

There was no introduction. But when the stately man walked into the UH auditorium, there was a buzz of: “That’s Lou Holtz.” The Warriors took out their cell phones to take pictures. “It was a celebrity moment,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. And then Holtz — a member of the College Football Hall of Fame who was a successful coach at Notre Dame, among other places — enchanted and motivated the Warriors with a compelling speech for the next 30 […]

Head coach Nick Rolovich said freshman Cole McDonald will get some work in practices. McDonald is a candidate to redshirt, a move that would create more class spacing among the quarterbacks. Rolovich said Beau Reilly, a third-year sophomore, is valued for his knowledge of the offense and leadership. Although Reilly will not be […]

By Stephen Tsai on August 7, 2016

With the first week of training camp in the books, the Warriors are expected to trim the rotations this coming week. The coaches wanted to get some in-person looks to two newcomers — quarterback Kyle Gallup, a transfer from Marshall, and running back Genta Ito, the Warriors’ first Japanese national since the program became fully Division I. Here is Ito in the Oklahoma drills: * * * * * With three senior running backs in a one-back offense, the assumption […]

UH football: Hard knocks

Ikaika Woolsey, Aaron Zwahlen, Beau Reilly, Dru Brown, Cole Brownholtz and Cole McDonald each took turns at quarterback. After the practice, head coach Nick Rolovich said he would review videos and, with consultation with the offensive coaches, pare down the quarterback rotation. Training camp: Day 5

By Stephen Tsai on August 5, 2016

In a dress rehearsal for tomorrow’s full-pad scrimmage, the Warriors were in shells for situational plays during today’s fifth practice of training camp. Quarterbacks Ikaika Woolsey, Aaron Zwahlen, Beau Reilly, Dru Brown, Cole Brownholtz and Cole McDonald each took a turn at the controls. Of note: > After right wideout Marcus Kemp mishandled a Woolsey pass, the Warriors went right back to Kemp on the next play.
