“Happy birthday, Jacob”

By Stephen Tsai on August 19, 2016

For his 10th birthday, Jacob Johnson wanted to hang out and play football with some of his heroes. Jacob was able to participate in scout drills. He also called the special pass play, a recreation of the Rolovich-to-Lelie TD that beat Fresno State in 2001. Jacob is a tough kid. He underwent 25 spinal taps and years of chemotherapy to conquer leukemia. Jacob, who had to learn to walk again because the ailment weakened his bones, now plays for the […]

By Stephen Tsai on August 15, 2016

UH coach Nick Rolovich said it will be “probably a few more days” before a starting quarterback is named. Ikaika Woolsey, Aaron Zwahlen and Dru Brown are considered the top three quarterbacks. Woolsey appears to be the top contender. “I think guys are fighting,” Rolovich said. “I feel pretty good about Ikaika, Aaron and Dru right now as far as being able to run the offense and execute. We’ll probably get a few more days in, and probably shoot for […]

Private scrimmage set for tonight

By Stephen Tsai on August 13, 2016

Tonight’s private scrimmage at Aloha Stadium will help shape the Warriors’ depth chart. The Warriors are treating this as a full-on dress rehearsal. The team will arrive at 4 p.m., then go through all the pre-game rituals. Media relations even will be there at 3 p.m. to set up equipment. First play is at 6 p.m. For the mostly full-contact scrimmage — the quarterbacks, as usual, will be exempt from big hits — there will be coaches in the booth […]
