Ask away

It’s Monday, which means we’re taking your questions on UH football. Saturday’s game? The upcoming road trip? Live streaming? Maybe we’ll have the answers, maybe we won’t. But we’ll do our best. Some of the answers will be posted in Wednesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Warrior Beat.

Some pretty-good moments

By Stephen Tsai on September 11, 2016

The morning after, Nick Rolovich had the same reaction to last night’s 41-36 victory over Tennessee Martin. “Ugly,” Rolovich said. Missed tackles, three interceptions that led to 21 points, and a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown looked as bad on video as they did live. But, hey, there were some highlights, such as: > If wideout Marcus Kemp keeps it up, he can expect an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine in February. He’s running crisp routes, adjusts to […]

Game day: Tennessee Martin

By Stephen Tsai on September 10, 2016

A few things to know about the Warriors’ home-opening opponent: > Martin is located in West Tennessee, a 2 1/2-hour drive from Nashville. The population is 10,515; UT Martin’s enrollment is 7,910. > The Skyhawks have a unique logo. It actually features two hawks facing each other to form one bird. If you cover one side of the picture, you’ll see the profile picture of the hawk. > Jason Simpson inherited a program that, at one point, lost 45 conference […]

Former punter’s son joins Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on September 9, 2016

When Shawn McCarthy was 7, he learned his father, Tom McCarthy, was not just an ordinary businessman. “I was looking around and I saw a picture of him punting,” Shawn said. “He said, ‘Yeah, I used to play for UH.’” Tom McCarthy, who averaged 40.7 yards during his UH career, also bounced around NFL camps for four years, with notable stops with the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks. He then returned to Hawaii, worked in real estate and now […]

Making contacts

By Stephen Tsai on September 8, 2016

Each week, the Warriors stage their version of the scout bowl, a full-contact scrimmage involving redshirts and developing players. In this event, the quarterbacks are “live,” meaning they can be hit. And they were. Among today’s highlights: > Genta Ito, a Japan-raised running back, has become an inspirational figure among teammates. Ito broke off consecutive runs of 24 and 13 yards, weaving under and through the defense. On his third carry, he slipped, and was tackled for a 2-yard loss. […]

Big plans in recruiting

By Stephen Tsai on September 7, 2016

> Jeezy23: Will there be a big emphasis in cornerback and defensive line for the 2017 recruiting class? It appears that we need an upgrade in speed and cover skills at corner and more physicality on the defensive line to match up with tougher opponents. Answer: “There’s always an emphasis on recruiting cornerbacks and defensive linemen, as well as linebackers and offensive linemen,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “I think quarterbacks and kickers are down the line. But always big […]

Faalologo back in rotation

By Stephen Tsai on September 6, 2016

Nose tackle Penitito “Kiko” Faalologo is expected to be part of the defensive rotation for Saturday’s game against Tennessee Martin. Faalologo traveled to Australia and Michigan for the Warriors’ first two games, but he did not play in the games because of a physical issue. “He’ll help out depth d-line-wise,” head coach Nick Rolovich said after this morning’s practice. Kory Rasmussen started at nose tackle and Zeno Choi opened at defensive tackle in the Warriors’ first two games.
