Still alive

By Stephen Tsai on October 30, 2016

Sure, things aren’t appearing to be as hunky and dory for the Warriors following last night’s loss to New Mexico. The dream is to win the MW West, finish with a winning regular season, and earn a berth in the Hawaii Bowl. The first will require a little help from some MW teams. San Diego State’s remaining MW schedule: 11/5 vs. Hawaii 11/12 at Nevada 11/19 at Wyoming 11/26 at CSU UH’s remaining MW schedule: 11/5 at San Diego State […]

Game day: New Mexico

By Stephen Tsai on October 29, 2016

With two of the final four regular-season games will be on the road, this figures to be a swing game for the Warriors. If they win, they move a game above .500, needing a split of their final four games, to earn a berth in the Hawaii Bowl. A loss means UH will have to win three from this pool: At San Diego State, Boise State, at Fresno State and UMass. Well, you get the picture. The Warriors face another […]

Warriors need new house rules

By Stephen Tsai on October 28, 2016

It is a dubious distinction that Nick Rolovich is the lowest-paid head coach in the Mountain West and third-lowest overall in the FBS. And while UH should adjust Rolovich’s salary if he continues to do well, here’s how the school can help the Warrior program in the near future: > Temporary housing: In a perfect world, an out-of-state hire for an assistant coach’s job will have secured living arrangements before making the move. A school policy is to provide a […]

A true Warrior — Betty Hwa-Won Hiraki

By Stephen Tsai on October 27, 2016

Betty Hwa-Won Hiraki attended tailgate parties, wore Rainbow Warrior shirts, and unabashedly root-root-rooted for the home team. But it was Betty who was worthy of our cheers. She was one of Korea’s first female martial-arts stars, whose accomplishments are still celebrated by a fan club 40 years later. To Betty, fame was the easy part. Her courage was measured when she and her daughter left Korea for a land where she did not know the language or culture. But Betty, […]

Takai’s family to serve as UH honorary captains

By Stephen Tsai on October 26, 2016

Question: What are the plans for Saturday’s Military Appreciation Night? Answer: The family of the late U.S. Rep. K. Mark Takai will serve as honorary captains for the UH-New Mexico football game at Aloha Stadium. Takai, a UH graduate and former Rainbow Warrior swimmer, was helpful in several UH athletic projects while serving in the state Legislature for 20 years. In 2014, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Takai died in July. He was survived by his […]

Flash mob

By Stephen Tsai on October 25, 2016

Head coach Nick Rolovich has this message: “I got an e-mail. This is what I want to happen. It’s not a question. It’s a demand. There’s the cell/flashlight thing that somebody started and the wave that has transcended generations. I want them combined — flashlight wave. That was not my idea. Somebody e-mailed me that idea. It’s a a great idea.” Rolovich also poses a somewhat serious question: “What Halloween costume should I wear on the sideline?” And maybe a […]

Tavai wins MW defensive award

By Stephen Tsai on October 24, 2016

Middle linebacker Jahlani Tavai today was named the Mountain West Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. Tavai, a sophomore, made 13 tackles, including 10 solo stops, in the Rainbow Warriors’ 34-27 road victory over Air Force in double overtime. “Awesome,” defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa said. “He deserves it.” Tavai made the defensive calls — and changes — against Air Force’s deceptive triple-option offense. “He had to make the audibles,” Lempa said. “He was in charge of that. He had to […]
