Solving UH’s helmet dilemma

By Stephen Tsai on November 16, 2016

Question: Why do the Warriors have only one home uniform? How much does it cost for one uniform? Answer: “Would I love to have a home uniform and an away uniform and a couple options and a couple helmets?” coach Nick Rolovich said. “I’d love to.” But each uniform costs about $350. Painted helmets run about $400 apiece. Take those numbers, multiple them by 120 or so and … “There probably are other needs that can be taken care of […]

When usually reliable Kalakaua Timoteo III, a freshman wideout, was missing at the start of this morning’s warmups, the concerned coaches called his cell and then his mother. A few minutes later, Timoteo arrived. He had overslept and his cell phone was turned off. The coaches then called Jocelyn Timoteo to let her know her son was safe and sound. But she said she already was on her way from Mililani. Jocelyn scolded her son, then made him apologize to […]

The Golden Apron

By Stephen Tsai on November 11, 2016

The competition accelerates this weekend for the Warriors. Yes, we’re talking the battle for the Golden Apron. Each Sunday, a coach is in charge of providing the staff dinner. At stake is the Golden Apron. There are no rules, but there is etiquette. Just like how singing contestants can’t use the same songs, it is frowned upon to provide the same entree on consecutive weekends. Also, because of busy schedules, it is permissible for family members to prepare the meals, […]

By Stephen Tsai on November 10, 2016

The past couple days, a video crew from Japan’s NHK network has followed around running back Genta Ito for a documentary. As the NCAA’s only current Japan-raised football player, Ito has attracted a small international following. “It shows that people back (in Japan) are very proud of his accomplishments,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “Hopefully, that leads to more Hawaii fans in Japan and more football fans in Japan.” While Ito could help in marketing, his value is as a […]

Mayo, others might be back this week

By Stephen Tsai on November 9, 2016

Question: Which players will return this week? Answer: UH coach Nick Rolovich said more players will be available this week than for last week’s game against San Diego State. He said cornerback Jamal Mayo, who has missed the past three games, might be available to play against Boise State on Saturday. Rolovich said it will be a “game-time decision.” Mayo said he is hopeful about playing. “It was very frustrating because it was my first injury ever in football,” Mayo […]
