By Stephen Tsai on January 2, 2017

OK, OK. We feel your pain. Your neighbor stole your newspaper. This is a holiday and you can’t read the paper at the office. You can’t log on because your spouse is signed on to the Star-Advertiser site. We sat down with Rolo last week, and this is what he shared in today’s Star-Advertiser. * * * * The University of Hawaii football team broke even in 2016 and added the Hawaii Bowl trophy to its collection, but Nick Rolovich […]

Happy New Year

By Stephen Tsai on January 1, 2017

These are three 2017 wishes: > Don’t change … too much. The rule in test-taking is to trust your first answer. The connecting problems for Fred vonAppen and Norm Chow were going off script. They had solid plans — vonAppen brought in coaches with backgrounds in the West Coast Offense; Chow sought taller receivers, corners and linemen — and then they shook up their staffs and changed schemes. Rolo came in with a solid plan and reliable staff. June Jones […]

UH needs these rainmakers

By Stephen Tsai on December 31, 2016

There is an opening for president and CEO of ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue. Here are my nominations: > Daniel Gabriel: The founder of Aloha Water Company is an esteemed expert in his field. But more than his hydration knowledge, he is a marketing genius. Think about the thousands of gallons of bottled water he sells to people … in Hawaii. Unrivaled leader

By Stephen Tsai on December 29, 2016

There was a time — a generation, actually — when BYU was Hawaii’s biggest rival. And while LaVell Edwards was head coach of that team, he did not fit the villain’s profile. He was innovative (promoting a wide-open passing attack), faithful (he served a church mission in New York after retiring from BYU), beloved (BYU’s stadium bears his name) and always willing to play UH. His involvement with the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame further illustrated his respect for the […]

Look who’s back

By Stephen Tsai on December 28, 2016

Yep, that was Larry “Tui” Tuileta at UH early this morning as he joined volleyball teammates for the opening day of training camp. The Warriors departed this morning for Camp Erdman. Tuileta said he is focused on volleyball this semester, but left open the possibility of joining the football team this summer. By the way, Cindy Luis will be taking over men’s volleyball fulltime this season. Your blog host will be covering baseball in the spring. * * * * […]

Building on Pride Rock

By Stephen Tsai on December 27, 2016

“The bowl was one small step for Hawaii football, one giant leap for Pride Rock,” head coach Nick Rolovich said following the 52-35 victory in the Hawaii Bowl. With a final 7-7 record, the Warriors enter Year 2 even. Here’s what to look for on offense entering 2017: > Quarterbacks: The Warriors will have the exact same composition — three scholarship quarterbacks, two walk-ons — entering the new year. Last year’s three scholarship QBs (Ikaika Woolsey, Aaron Zwahlen and Beau […]
