Pilares, Salas offer support

By Stephen Tsai on March 7, 2017

Two of the most dynamic players from the Warriors’ recent past — slotbacks Kealoha Pilares and Greg Salas — attended this morning’s spring practice. Afterward, they addressed the team, then gave pointers to UH receivers, such as slotback John Ursua. Pilares, a proud new daddy, has served as personal trainer the past few months. Salas moved back to Hawaii for at least another year — he and his wife are expecting their first child in July — and is enrolled […]

No relief in sight

By Stephen Tsai on March 6, 2017

The baseball ‘Bows have a unique problem. Their relief pitchers aren’t getting enough work. That’s because their starters — this generation’s Four Aces — have been dominant this year. The ‘Bows lost two-thirds of their three-pitcher rotation at the end of the 2016 season. Brendan Hornung was the lone holdover. And Hornung lived up to the No. 1 role in the first two series, befuddling hitters with his four-pitch repertoire, including a retro-era split-fingered fastball. But Dominic DeMiero, Neil Uskali […]

Spring competition

By Stephen Tsai on March 5, 2017

After two weeks, here are the most intriguing battles: > Backup quarterback: Cole McDonald and Cole Brownholtz were criticized for a lackluster practice on Thursday, but they rebounded with strong outings yesterday when they were deemed “live” and free to be hit. > Wideouts: Keelan Ewaliko and Ammon Barker have taken the majority of the reps with the No. 1s. But UH has given extensive looks to the young guys (Davine Tullis and Kumoku Noa), newcomer (Marcus Armstrong-Brown), veteran (Isaiah […]

Rolo-ing the rock

By Stephen Tsai on March 4, 2017

That was indeed Nick Rolovich whipping passes during today’s sixth practice of spring training. Rolovich was showing the young’uns some offensive plays. He did rifle a nice pass to wideout Don’Yeh Patterson. “He’s still got it,” quarterbacks coach Craig Stutzmann said. Rolovich also answered a dare from cornerback Zach Wilson, who had jokingly questioned whether Rolo could still wing it. As the moldy saying goes: old quarterbacks don’t die, they just pass away. The top backups also had a nice […]

NCAA does the right thing

By Stephen Tsai on March 3, 2017

There was a little drama — OK, a lot of drama — but the NCAA did the right thing in lifting the UH basketball team’s postseason ban and restoring a scholarship. Brian McInnis has all the updates at: McInnis tweets

“Burn the boats”

By Stephen Tsai on March 1, 2017

In the UH baseball dugout, there is this sign: It is a reference to when Spanish Conquistador Herman Cortes and his expedition force landed at Veracruz in 1519. Cortes told his men: “Quemar los barcos.” The order to “burn the boats” was the rallying cry that there would be no turning back on this mission. It is a theme UH baseball coach Mike Trapasso has implored, that the ‘Bows are all in for this season. The UH men’s basketball team […]

Spring practice: No. 4

By Stephen Tsai on February 28, 2017

Once again, the Warriors had to race the clock during their fourth practice of spring training. Because several players have 9 a.m. classes, the Warriors have been on the field shortly before 6:30. The trouble is it’s still dark. The exterior lights from Johnson Hall helped. But the Warriors did not mind the dimness. Wideout Devan Stubblefield actually did his best Daredevil training, catching footballs fired out of the JUGS machine. At 8:20 a.m., Nick Rolovich told the players with […]
