Good housekeeping

By Stephen Tsai on April 1, 2017

Sometime in the distant future — probably after I’ve crossed into the ultimate end zone — there will be a completed rail and a new football stadium. And after years spent at the Stan Sheriff Center, weeks at Les Murakami Stadium and a morning at the robotics competition, I’m convinced that UH should manage its next football facility. Sure, the critics’ favorite pastime is to mock all things UH. But one of the things UH does really well is maintain […]

Dual possibilities

By Stephen Tsai on March 31, 2017

Libero Larry “Tui” Tuileta and outside hitter Isaac Liva are focused on the volleyball Warriors quest for a national title. But they still have not ruled out a return to a double life — and sports. As we all know, Tuileta was a standout Punahou quarterback who redshirted with the USC football team in 2014. Quarterbacks Aaron Zwahlen and Beau Reilly transferred after the 2016 season. Liva, who redshirted with the football Warriors in 2016, is a late-bloomer to the […]

Worlds collide

By Stephen Tsai on March 30, 2017

It’s been five years, but it still feels strange that Hawaii, outside of football, is not in the same conference as Fresno State, Nevada or San Jose State. It also doesn’t seem right that UH has less equity than those other schools in the Mountain West because of its football-only affiliation. It would be interesting if UH’s men’s teams competed in the Mountain West while the women remain in the Big West (sort of how it was done a long […]

Shannon Smith remembered

By Stephen Tsai on March 29, 2017

It was 20 years ago today — March 29, 1997 — when UH kicker Shannon Smith died while trying to save the 6-year-old son of former head coach Fred vonAppen from a whirlpool at “Slippery Slide” on Kauai. This afternoon, Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho and head coach Nick Rolovich will meet with Smith’s family at their home in Kapaa. Rolovich is expected to bring some of Smith’s gear from the UH locker room that was named in his memory on […]

Spring break workout

By Stephen Tsai on March 28, 2017

Ah, spring break, a time for the youthful to have fun, relax and … workout? The offseason conditioning program resumes next week, but three Warriors mixed embracing Kauai’s wonders with a good cardio workout. Offensive lineman Austin Webb, wideout Ammon Barker and linebacker Max Broman hiked the 11-mile Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast. It was a scenic change for Webb, who was raised in Texas. Barker and Broman are from Utah. On a sorta related note, happy birthday […]

Fogel wins award … and 5 things to like about ‘Bows

By Stephen Tsai on March 27, 2017

Adam Fogel was named Big West field player of the week after hitting .750 (9-for-12) in the ‘Bows’ four-game sweep of San Jose State this past weekend. “I don’t think there’s any question we’re seeing the tip of the iceberg,” coach Mike Trapasso said. “He’ll continue to improve as he gets stronger and as he grows and as he learns more about his swing. We’re looking at a guy who has the potential to do great things.” The ‘Bows are […]

Bubba takes a break

By Stephen Tsai on March 26, 2017

After nearly a year of non-stop work — and workouts — strength/conditioning coordinator Bubba Reynolds is taking a much-needed vacation on Kauai. The Warriors made a noticeable improvement in physical fitness from a year ago under Reynolds, who is regarded as the offseason leader. The Warriors resume workouts on Monday, April 3.

Kema-Kaleiwahea aces 2nd pro day

By Stephen Tsai on March 25, 2017

Former Warrior Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea proved worthy of a second chance. Kema-Kaleiwahea rebounded from Monday’s UH pro day to post improved results at Arizona’s pro day yesterday. Kema-Kaleiwahea, a Kamehameha Schools graduate, played at Arizona for two seasons before transferring to UH, along with his wife, to raise their two adopted sons. Last week, Arizona extended the pro-day invitation to Kema-Kaleiwahea. Event — UH pro day >> Arizona pro day > 10-yard dash: 1.65 seconds >> 1.60 seconds > 40-yard dash: […]
