Forgotten but not gone

By Stephen Tsai on April 9, 2017

Admit it, you forgot about defensive Max Hendrie. It’s understandable because he wasn’t allowed to practice early in the fall while his transcripts were being sorted. And then when he was good to go, he suffered an arm injury. But Hendrie is eligible and despite being held out of spring training until he fully healed, he is working out with teammates during this second phase of offseason conditioning. Hendrie is expected to be ready to compete in training camp. Wideout […]

Let Rolo lead the way

By Stephen Tsai on April 8, 2017

The mystery wasn’t whether Aloha Stadium needed to be replaced. The puzzler is why consultants and studies were needed. The stadium hasn’t passed the eyeball — and nasal — test in years. The stadium is a vain actor who’s had way too many plastic surgeries. For some time, we’ve been at that point where a decision needs to be made about continuing to pour repair money into a rusted car with 300,000 miles and no gas cap or buying a […]

All in the ‘ohana

It’s fun to watch brothers KK Padello and Kaimana Padello work out together each morning. They’re both competitive, athletic and diligent — but not unique. There have been many siblings who have played for the Warriors through the years. I’ve compiled a list. Because I only appear to be 87 years old, the list was reduced to brothers who played at UH the past 40 years. Also, Shawn Ching and Shawn Alivado only count as one person. David “Mento” Maeva […]

Warriors get TV love

By Stephen Tsai on April 5, 2017

The Warriors will make at least four nationally televised appearances this coming season, according to the Mountain West (which has the local rights to UH home games). > Sept. 23 — At Wyoming, on an ESPN channel > Oct. 7 — At Nevada, on CBSSN > Oct. 28 — San Diego State, on an ESPN channel > Nov. 25 — BYU, at 4 p.m., on CBSSN There still is a possibility of Root picking up games. And, for now, the […]

Field day

By Stephen Tsai on April 4, 2017

It was a busy morning at the Ching Athletic Complex today. The women’s volleyball, track and field, men’s golf and, of course, the football team worked out on the artificial surface and at the cross-training area. There also were officials from a marketing company in town for a meeting and … no, focus, Stephen, focus. Here are the football Warriors.

UH football: Back at it

By Stephen Tsai on April 3, 2017

Spring break has ended, and the Warriors were back in offseason training (early) this morning.

Retirement plan

By Stephen Tsai on April 2, 2017

One of the good things UH does is honor the scholarships of players who are no longer medically able to play. Two years ago, there were four football players who took medical retirements. They all ended up graduating or on track to earning a degree. One of the forgotten players was offensive lineman Luke Clements, who had to medically retire last year. Clements reports that he is still attending UH, remains on scholarship and is set to graduate in May […]
