Run, jump, throw …

By Stephen Tsai on April 25, 2017

Last week Monday, the alarm sounded at 5 a.m. and I turned it off, and rolled back to sleep. The next morning, the same thing. The day after, I didn’t even bother to set the alarm. Hey, it was raining. But today I got up, and because this is the last week of the spring conditioning program, well, the pictures are back:

On the recruiting trail

Last week, the nine assistant Warrior coaches made evaluation visits to all but one of Oahu’s football-playing schools. (They’ll visit that school next month.) This week, the coaches are on the road in search of future Warriors. During the evaluation period, which runs through the end of May, the full-time assistants may watch practices and visit the schools. But a university’s head coach is not permitted to participate in the in-person evaluations. Yep, that’s a dumb restriction, but, hey … […]

Rolo, Warriors make house calls

By Stephen Tsai on April 23, 2017

Nick Rolovich, quarterback Dru Brown, tight end Dakota Torres and the UH cheerleaders made three surprise visits to season-ticket subscribers yesterday. The mini mahalo tour was associate athletic director Joel Masunaga’s brainchild, and it was a way for the Warriors to show support and interact with their fans. Rolovich presented the honorees with a football, T-shirt and replica season tickets. The cheerleaders performed to UH fight song and Hawaii Five-0. First stop, Kahalu‘u: Paul Nelson, who has attended each year […]

The 5 who can lead UH

By Stephen Tsai on April 22, 2017

In a meeting of UH coaches and staff a few weeks ago, Marilyn Moniz-Kaho‘ohanohano announced she would retire June 1 as assistant athletic director/senior woman administrator. Moniz-Kaho‘ohanohano is smart, diligent and shows passion for her alma mater and student-athletes. She was not always the most agreeable, but progress often cannot be attained without battle. She is a fighter. Nobody asked me, of course, but here are my unsolicited suggestions for a successor: > Lois Manin: She already has a significant […]

Eye on the Tigers

By Stephen Tsai on April 21, 2017

Head coach Nick Rolovich and graduate assistants Mikahael Waters and Makana Garrigan returned from a three-day visit with the LSU coaching staff. “It was good, for me, to see how somebody else operates — from team meetings to practice flow to how they attack recruiting to, on a smaller scale, what kind of facility upgrades can we make, can we strive for,” Rolovich said. Rolovich said he enjoyed the reunion with LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda. Rolovich and Aranda were […]

One last TBA

By Stephen Tsai on April 20, 2017

It could take until this summer to complete the final piece in the Warriors’ 2017 television schedule. UMass controls the television rights to the Aug. 26 season-opener because it is the home team and a football independent. But which entity will televise the game has yet to be determined. UMass does not have a national television contract. This is different from UH’s regular-season finale against BYU, also a football independent, at Aloha Stadium. The Mountain West, of which UH is […]

Warriors to revive camps

By Stephen Tsai on April 19, 2017

After three-year hiatus, the Warriors will resurrect their own summer camps on the Manoa campus. A few years ago, the Warriors ran satellite camps on sites across Oahu. In 2015, they did not hold any camps. Last year, the UH and Michigan coaches teamed on a camp at Saint Louis School. UH coaches also participated in the GPA College Football Showcase. But with the NCAA’s recently implemented rule eliminating satellite camps and placing tight restrictions on third-party-administered camps, the Warriors […]

Castro never gave up

By Stephen Tsai on April 18, 2017

In August 2013, there was a buzz when a top commitment arrived at the Warriors’ training camp at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. As a Vista Murrieta High senior in 2012, Jeremy Castro received a 4-star rating from Scout.com. Rivals.com rated Castro as the nation’s No. 17 weak-side defensive end and California’s No. 40 overall prospect. Castro signed with UCLA in February 2012, but did not meet all the requirements to enroll that fall. He then earned a qualifying ACT score, […]
