Making a point

By Stephen Tsai on May 19, 2017

On a gravel parking area next to Klum Gym, there is an abandoned bus that serves as a memorial to what was supposed to be a promising basketball future under Gib Arnold. The bus’ exterior is adorned with action pictures of former players — one of whom is Miah Ostrowski. The bus is a dust collector, Arnold is gone and Ostrowski has moved on to the rest of his life. A lesson of that image is that quality basketball players, […]

Double take

By Stephen Tsai on May 17, 2017

There are two facets to recruiting’s evaluation period: 1) Observing a prospect in action, such as watching spring ball, and 2) academic assessments, such as meeting with teachers, counselors and coaches. The UH assistant coaches are in their second round of local recruiting, re-visiting every football-playing high school this week. Ward store did not make dollars or sense

By Stephen Tsai on May 12, 2017

The coroner’s report on Ward Centre’s H-Zone apparel store should list the cause of death as “lolo idea.” It was never the right choice to place a store where the foot traffic for sports apparel was limited and the decor resembled a seasonal store selling holiday-gift sausages. “Lose money,” as my Grandpa Kubo used to say. It wasn’t the product. I go to Kailua’s Target five times a week and the checkout lines are jammed with tourists buying anything that […]
