Tago won’t be rejoining Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on May 27, 2017

Defensive end Jamie Tago will not be rejoining the Warriors this coming season. Tago did not meet the requirements for reinstatement. Tago, who transferred from Garden City (Kan.) College in January, was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules in February. He needed to meet certain conditions for reinstatement. Tago initially signed with UH in February 2014. He was with the Warriors in 2014 and 2015 but departed during the 2016 spring semester because of non-football circumstances. He played at Garden […]

The University of Utah football coaches will be among the instructors at the UH Elite Camp next month on the Manoa campus. This is the only Hawaii camp for high school-aged players involving NCAA coaches. A newly implemented rule limits NCAA coaches to camps sponsored by Division I teams and held on their campus or home field. The two-day, three-session UH camp will be held June 9 and 10. Fee is $120 when pre-registering and $150 for walk-ups. Call (808) […]

DB Lewis gets junior year back

By Stephen Tsai on May 25, 2017

Safety Daniel Lewis Jr. has been granted a medical hardship waiver that restores his junior-year status and maintains his two remaining years of UH eligibility. In other words: he redshirted in 2016. Lewis suffered an injury against Michigan, UH’s second-game opponent in 2016, and missed the rest of the season. During the offseason, he underwent successful surgery for a sports hernia. He was able to participate in spring training. Lewis, who joined UH in 2014, met the requirements for the […]

QB Greeley set to join Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on May 24, 2017

And then there were three. Karson Greeley, a quarterback from Vista Murrieta (Calif.) High, said he will join the Warriors this summer. His twin brother, Kade Greeley, is a tight end who signed with the Warriors in February. His sister, Kalei Greeley, is an outside hitter for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team. “It sounds like a great fit,” Greeley said. “I’ve got family out there. I’ve got a little bit of Hawaiian in my blood. My sister’s out there. It […]

UH football: Spring grades

By Stephen Tsai on May 23, 2017

There were 36 Warriors who earned at least a 3.0 grade-point average for the recently completed spring semester. In addition, there were three Warriors who had 2.98 GPAs. Long-snapper Noah Borden and running backs Genta Ito and Steven Lakalaka each posted 4.0 GPAs. Lakalaka, who earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology on May 13, plans to take courses toward his goal of becoming a physician’s assistant. “There’s a group that did very well,” UH coach Nick Rolovich said. “There’s also […]

Banner year

By Stephen Tsai on May 22, 2017

Among the many good things about Sunday night’s tribute to Dave Shoji were: 1) UH celebrated its accomplishments, and 2) a banner honoring Shoji was unfurled. Those were significant moments for a school that often is muted in trumpeting the things it does well. Shoji was rightfully feted for all that he has done for the school and state, just as honoring Les Murakami was proper several years ago. The next step is ditch that unwritten policy limiting the number […]

Coaching the coaches

By Stephen Tsai on May 21, 2017

About 100 high school coaches from across the state attended the Warriors’ football coaches clinic yesterday at the UH facilities. The 5-hour event featured lectures, breakout sessions and, of course, a gathering to socialize and exchange ideas. What was impressive with the turnout was, unlike past clinics, it was not tied with a spring practice. Instead, this was a clinic for coaches strictly interested in a clinic.

Former UH DB emerges in pro league

By Stephen Tsai on May 20, 2017

Remember Dante Johnson? He played free safety for the Warriors four years ago. He even had picks in back-to-back practices. Dante … Johnson? C’mon, anybody else besides BigWave remember him? Well, after two seasons, Johnson disappeared from the UH roster. But now he has reappeared as a receiver/defensive back for the Upstate Dragons (Greenville, S.C.) of Supreme Indoor Football. Today’s game may be viewed here: Dragons video Go Dragons! * * * * * NY Jets fans began a “Junk […]
