Three Hawaii high school football players signed today to play at West Point. Here’s Paul Honda’s story about Shaun Kagawa, Paul-Andrew Rhoden and Jaryn Villegas (subscription material), who will play for coach Rich Ellerson, a former University of Hawaii player and assistant coach. ____ The UH baseball team has won four of its last five games after that horrendous start. Tweet du jour: Fotu confirms he’s happy at UH

By Dave Reardon on March 22, 2013

Something new: A tweet of the day from the world of sports. Sometimes it will be local, sometimes national. Today, Hawaii forward Isaac Fotu responds to murmurs that he might transfer. (A UH basketball player might transfer? That never happens, right?). You can see the rest of the conversation and  join it at @dave_reardon on Twitter. Sorry I couldn’t transfer Frotu’s avatar … you can see it  at @IFotu42; he tweets a fair amount so he’s definitely worth a follow. […]

OIA honoring Ginoza, Fukushima

By Dave Reardon on March 21, 2013

Two living legends of Hawaii sports, Larry Ginoza of Waianae and Ted Fukushima of Kaiser, are being honored tonight at the Oahu Interscholastic Association Foundation’s annual dinner at the Sheraton Waikiki. As a coach stressing discipline, Ginoza turned the Seariders into a football powerhouse of the 1970s and 1980s, with multiple league and Prep Bowl victories. Fukushima was the athletic director at Kaiser when the school opened in the 1970s and led the Cougars program that dominated the OIA and […]

HTA statement on return of Pro Bowl for 2014

By Dave Reardon on March 20, 2013

The following is a statement released by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, regarding the return of the Pro Bowl for 2014: As the most popular spectator sport in the U.S., the NFL Pro Bowl Week is one of the most anticipated sporting events in Hawai‘i, generating millions of dollars in visitor spending and attracting thousands of visitors to the Hawaiian Islands for the all-star game. Therefore, the NFL’s recent decision to return the NFL Pro Bowl to Hawai‘i in 2014 is […]

Ben Jay at the QB Club

By Dave Reardon on March 18, 2013

A lot of what the new University of Hawaii athletic director said at the Honolulu Quarterback Club today was covered in this column on March 10. Here are some of the other highlights of what he said at and after the QB Club meeting: *When asked about the $11-million budget deficit, Jay said, “A lot of that deficit is accounting. We’re working with the university on that. A lot of it is a paper deficit.” It’s no secret that the […]

Rainbow Warriors in CIT. Yay or nay?

By Dave Reardon on March 17, 2013

My first impulse was that I didn’t want to see the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team play again this season after the way it didn’t show up for its Big West tournament game against UC Irvine. But after some more thought, I’m OK that the Rainbow Warriors are in the College Insiders.com Tournament, under one condition: financially strapped UH makes a profit by doing so. That means a big crowd when it hosts Air Force on Wednesday night at […]

Friday notes: UH hoops, football and softball

By Dave Reardon on March 15, 2013

After yesterday’s loss to UC Irvine in the Big West tournament, the Fire Gib Arnold crowd is out in force, as expected. I certainly agree that the Rainbow Warriors weren’t ready to play Thursday, and a 44-22 halftime deficit is horrendous and too much to come back from. But this team, despite its backcourt deficiencies, did finish with a winning season and a slight improvement from last year (some will say that’s offset by an easier schedule). I’m still a […]

Too many turnovers for Wahine

By Dave Reardon on March 13, 2013

It’s pretty easy to see why Hawaii lost to Cal State Fullerton 66-51 today in the women’s Big West tournament. Turnovers. The Rainbow Wahine gave up the ball 22 times, and the Titans were credited with 17 steals. Give Fullerton a lot of credit for a second-consecutive upset in the tournament, especially considering the program is enduring despite the murder of assistant coach Monica Quon last month. It’s surprising UH played so poorly against a team it just beat here […]
