Hugh Yoshida on Norm Chow

By Dave Reardon on August 27, 2013

Retired University of Hawaii athletic director Hugh Yoshida will be the honorary team captain when UH opens against USC in football Thursday at Aloha Stadium. Yoshida spoke to the team Tuesday at practice and to me for a few minutes afterward. . DR: You became a college athletic director late in your career after spending most of it as a high school coach and AD. What kind of  challenges did that present that might translate to a new college head […]

The Final Four

By Dave Reardon on August 23, 2013

The Napa Ultimate Sports Trivia Challenge contest has its final four today at Dave & Buster’s. Just for fun, here are bios of the four contestants, culled from interviews yesterday for today’s column about Royden Muranaka’s recent dominance of this event. The “action” starts at 5 p.m. today at D&B, and stick around for the celebrity contest; Stephen Tsai and I will match our catalogue of useless sports knowledge with that of Bobby Curran and Gary Dickman representing ESPN-1420 and […]

Correspondence

By Dave Reardon on August 21, 2013

Regarding ridiculously long ticket lines at Aloha Stadium in which people waited up to halftime of Saint Louis-Kahuku game: Thank you for writing the article that appeared in today’s paper. It was a very frustrating night for the Kahuku faithfuls. After an almost 2 hour drive due to Spartan Race traffic than to arrive and stand in line for another hour was totally ridiculous. I agree with you about online purchasing or through local banks perhaps like the State Championships […]

By Dave Reardon on August 17, 2013

As expected, Alabama is No. 1. Here’s the way I voted. The preseason poll was even more of a guessing game than usual because of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel’s limbo status. 1. Alabama2. Aloha to The Author Phil/Fil Slash Roberts

By Dave Reardon on August 15, 2013

I am always impressed with people who successfully reinvent themselves, crushing adversity along the way with persistence. Phil Roberts, whose last day as a producer at ESPN-1420 (KKEA) was Thursday, has done it twice. When I first heard Phil’s voice on the sports talk station I found it very familiar. It took me a while, but I eventually realized where I’d heard him before: Phil Roberts was Fil Slash, one of my favorite DJs when I used to listen to […]

Reader says put Price to work

By Dave Reardon on August 5, 2013

I am an employer and will pay the balance of $118,000 over the remaining year of employment.  My head coach does not want him on the team.  Can’t I have him answer the phones, or help the janitor, or help with minor repair work around campus? He may be over paid for the position but what the heck, get some value.  If he quits then I save the bucks. Pay him to stay home???   Not on my watch!! Bill McRoberts […]

Offensive coordinator salary: $118,000-$120,000. University of Hawaii football: Price-less

By Dave Reardon on August 2, 2013

When Aaron Price was brought on as offensive coordinator in the spring, University of Hawaii football fans were hopeful this might signal an expansion of the Rainbow Warriors playbook because of Price’s propensity for the spread offense. Maybe the writing was on the wall when head coach Norm Chow said last week he would continue to call the plays, and not the new offensive coordinator. Now that Price is gone what does it mean? We’ll see as practice, which started […]
