Notes from Logan, Utah as the Rainbow Warriors approach

By Dave Reardon on November 1, 2013

LOGAN, Utah >> The injury to star quarterback Chuckie Keeton was a real buzz-kill for the Utah State fans. It’s the first thing the young lady at the front desk of the hotel mentioned when I asked if she were a fan of the home team. “They were so good last year, and Chuckie was so exciting. Now, oh well. Go Aggies, I guess.” I told her things could be way worse. She could be a fan of a team […]

More readers weigh in on balance in prep football

By Dave Reardon on October 18, 2013

The following is from reader Ron Tang: Hooray for both of your articles on consolidating our high school football teams.  I have been a strong advocate of having one league “High School Prep Football” where essentially there are only two major divisions:  Red and White (your suggestion for 3 divisions is also viable).   The huge disparity that exists today in both leagues manifests itself in the significant number of injuries I have witnessed this season. Our grandson plays for Pac-5 […]

Prankster reaches Chow

By Dave Reardon on October 10, 2013

Yes, that was Norm Chow on the other end of the phone line Wednesday with a bogus “talent evaluator” asking the University of Hawaii coach if he’d be willing to help the New York Giants as a consultant after the UH season is over. Chow acknowledged today that was him talking to prankster Ken Tarr on Wednesday after Tarr had called him pretending to be working for the Giants. Chow seemed agreeable to the idea of helping the Giants, but […]

Q and A with Billy Ray Stutzmann

By Dave Reardon on October 4, 2013

Billy Ray Stutzmann, who led the University of Hawaii football team in receptions and yards receiving in 2012, finally played in a game this season last Saturday as the Rainbow Warriors fell 42-37 to Fresno State. Stutzmann caught three passes for 46 yards and a touchdown. Stutzmann reported to fall camp late because of head injuries in a one-car accident a couple of days before the start of camp. Stutzmann was driving back to his apartment less than 10 minutes […]

Third-string QB will start for Nevada

By Dave Reardon on September 21, 2013

Things just got a little rosier for UH about an hour before kickoff against Nevada. Reno Gazette-Journal columnist Chris Murray just reported what we’d suspected — injured quarterback Cody Fajardo will not play and third-stringer Tyler Stewart gets the start. Murray reports that info was known to a few folks earlier in the week, which explains the point spread change from Hawaii opening as a 14-point underdog and going to a 7 1/2 point dog as of this morning. Second-stringer […]

I still like Oregon over Bama for now and here’s why:

By Dave Reardon on September 16, 2013

Last week I wrote if Alabama beat Texas A&M I’d probably re-elevate the Tide to No. 1 in the AP poll. One of the reasons I said “probably” was in case Bama won, but gave up 628 yards in doing so. Another reason I said “probably” was just in case Oregon made Tennessee look like a JV high school team. Since both of those things happened it’s my belief that if the Ducks and Tide played each other at a […]

Ducks No. 1 … for now

By Dave Reardon on September 8, 2013

Here’s my AP poll after this week’s games. I’m that one guy who put Oregon at No. 1. I’m surprised I’ve no company. The Ducks’ stay at No. 1 may be brief, since I will likely put Alabama back there if it beats Texas A&M next week. According to voting guidelines this is supposed to be about who is best right now, and Oregon looked tremendous against Virginia. Alabama literally did nothing since it had a bye. Not their fault, […]
