Homecoming, key matchup

By Dave Reardon on October 25, 2014

>> Great turnout of former players for UH football homecoming tonight. >> One of the most popular figures in the program’s history, Nick Rolovich, still gets excited about Aloha Stadium … even as offensive coordinator of the opposing team. Got to chat with him a few minutes before the game. “The main thing I’m concerned about is getting a win here,” he said. “But, yes, coming through that tunnel is still a great feeling.” >> Tonight’s key matchup could be […]

Warriors walk the walk to stop domestic violence

By Dave Reardon on October 24, 2014

It’s sad that we live in a society where it is still necessary, but it’s important that we recognize and participate in events like the Men’s March Against Violence until the day comes that domestic violence is eradicated. I’d been meaning to get involved in this for years, and finally did on Thursday, the 20th annual event. It was also the first year that the UH athletic department was involved as an entity. About 75 Rainbow Warrior men, including student-athletes, […]

Wong’s homer: Greatest moment for a ‘Bow in the pros?

By Dave Reardon on October 12, 2014

Kolten Wong’s walk-off homer Sunday to give the St. Louis Cardinals a win to tie the NLCS at a game apiece is a golden sports moment. Is it the greatest ever for a former University of Hawaii athlete? I submit Glenn Braggs’ catch to propel the Cincinnati Reds into the 1990 World Series as just as great. It’s not as memorable as Wong’s homer for many, but in a pure baseball sense it is just as big. Others that are […]

Defense, emotion dictate a Hawaii win tonight

By Dave Reardon on October 11, 2014

So far my preseason picks (as well as those of many other prognosticators) have been on the money for which games the University of Hawaii football team would win this season. To this point, I had the Rainbow Warriors at 1-4, with the lone win against Northern Iowa. The next win I had UH picked for was tonight’s game against Wyoming. I still think Hawaii wins despite a spate of injuries to key players including running back Joey Iosefa and […]

UH in discussions for Russell Wilson Passing Academy

By Dave Reardon on October 9, 2014

If final details can be worked out, a truly big-time quarterback will visit the University of Hawaii football facilities next spring. Unfortunately, Russell Wilson’s college eligibility is expired. But Scott Pickett, the director of the Russell Wilson Passing Academy, has exchanged emails and had a phone conversation with UH athletic director Ben Jay about the QB of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks doing his popular one-day camp here. A tentative date is April 11, on the grass practice fields […]

Rainbow Warriors Sapolu, Tuinei in Poly Hall of Fame class of 2015

By Dave Reardon on October 8, 2014

Jesse Sapolu and Mark Tuinei — two of the greatest players in University of Hawaii football history — were announced today as members of the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame’s second class, which will be inducted in January. In addition to shining at UH, Sapolu (San Francisco 49ers) and Tuinei (Dallas Cowboys) were important offensive line starters on two great NFL dynasties. They’re both also products of local high schools; Sapolu from Farrington and Tuinei from Punahou. Others in the […]

From the editing room floor

By Dave Reardon on October 8, 2014

Some more thoughts regarding UH football’s quarterback change that didn’t make today’s column due to space considerations. Regarding the issue of the seven sacks against Rice: Those who have watched the game tape closely say most of them, if not all, were not the fault of the offensive line. Regardless of who is to blame it’s obvious that can’t happen again against Wyoming “It doesn’t matter who the quarterback is, we’re gonna block our asses off,” center Kody Afusia said. […]

Rainbow Warriors open as favorites against Wyoming

By Dave Reardon on October 5, 2014

Despite everything that has gone wrong for University of Hawaii football, the Rainbow Warriors (1-4) are favored to win their Mountain West Conference opener against Wyoming this Saturday at Aloha Stadium. UH is giving 3 points against the Cowboys, who are 3-2 including a win over Air Force that puts them in first place in the MWC Mountain Division. Don’t be surprised if that line changes some between now and kickoff. Wyoming is coming off a 56-14 pasting by Michigan […]
