don’t forget that we are not deep talent wise at the receiver positions. henry can play, taylor needs to get healthy, blount has to work on catching the ball. we need four wr’s every year since we have four positions there.

we could still use another quality corner. we need two safeties who can step up and who can run (one of our weaknesses). the staff are targeting those spots as we speak.

we seem to be echoing each others sentiments here. we actually will be okay at oline next year. again we need to bring in 4-5 each year because we have 5 oline positions.

i totally agree that we need a jc dt as well. hopefully mageo and wade will commit. that would be a coup de gras.

and we really need a running back with jets. some one who can step right in. i think right now that should be a priority for our offense as this will be an area that needs the most help. we need a troy evans or brad randle kind of back. one who can turn on the jets and be gone in a blink of an eye. that would make us very deadly.

and we always have room for jello. i mean a quality qb.

Front page of the main newspaper in San Diego had a story about San Diego State and its stadium problems. I wish that UH had SDSU’s type of lease–UH gets none of the concessions and parking while SDSU gets to keep 92% of both! SDSU is lucky that the Chargers pay most of the costs for the stadium so the city doesn’t try to have SDSU contribute to the upkeep… but the Chargers are being kicked out of the stadium.

The major budget problems (and pension shortfall) by the city of San Diego might make SDSU’s athletic department problems show up earlier than I had expected.

Negotiations between the city and SDSU for a new long-term lease to play at city-owned Qualcomm Stadium have been described as “very difficult” and “very, very frustrating” by a stadium official.

The negotiations have dragged for almost a year since SDSU’s last long-term lease expired at the end of the 2007 season. To be able to play the last two games of the current season at the stadium, the Aztecs recently had to agree to a special two-game permit in lieu of a long-term lease.

“I’d hate to get to the position where we might say, ‘Sorry, but the stadium’s not available next year.’ But it could be,” said Jeff Jeffery, who has been involved on behalf of the city as a member of the Qualcomm Stadium Advisory Board.

“Our goal is that the city should not be subsidizing San Diego State football,” said Jeffery, who also happens to be a $25,000-per-year booster of SDSU athletics. “It’s not our (the city’s) fault that the team is having serious problems.”

The city previously estimated that SDSU games cost city taxpayers more than $310,000 combined in 2006 and 2007, mostly because of dwindling attendance.

For the city, the crux of the issue is SDSU’s poor attendance. In 2004, SDSU’s average actual attendance was 28,336. Last year, it was 17,868, and this year it’s even worse

Severe financial pressures for both the city and SDSU haven’t made the situation easier. The city is considering closing 17 libraries and recreational facilities to help close a $43 million budget gap. SDSU is proposing a $160 annual student fee increase to relieve the athletics budget, which has been stressed for years because of low football revenue.

Too bad Manti Te’o doesn’t list Hawaii as one of his top 5 picks. Oh, sure he could help other Hawai’i athletes find spots in mainland schools (which so many already do) BUT he could do more for the University of Hawaii football program by staying home. It is a shame when the home University cannot keep what is considered the best in the state at home.

Auwe… not a good reflection on UH, Hawaii, and the Warriors. The irony is, as proud as we are of one of our own, his choosing to leave the islands for a mainland program brings shame to the islands.

I wish him well with his decision. I still hope he reconsiders playing for the local fans. Should he go, I know we will have lost a good player, but I’m confident McMackin and staff will be able to coach and develop an equally good one.

mih ~ I too am not eager to join the ‘Bon Voyage Teo’ crowd. The one statement he made about encouraging mainland coaches to recruit more of our talented athletes does not set well with me.

I agree when you point out the fact that he could do more for OUR University in OUR home state by promoting OUR program. Wherever he may go, it will be THEIR university, in THEIR state, and promote more of our elite players for THEIR program.

His family taught him all the skills he needs to get by in this world, but forgot to include a sense of loyalty to ones birth place.

To those who get down on UH because they can’t keep Te’o home…. He’s one of the top 10 recruits in the whole country. There are 5 star recruits in Florida that go to Notre Dame instead of UF or from Ohio and go to Michigan. That’s just the way it is. We’re getting some pretty good local recruits but we’re not going to get them all. Like others, I’ve noticed that once UH looks like its the team a recruit will pick, the scouting agencies tend to drop them down a star. Hmmmm

if a school finds out that they have signed more than they have room for, the grayshirt rules are implemented.

i grayshirt may be counted for the year just completed or the following year. you know, they fall in the “gray” area. typically, instead of coming the fall they are enrolled fulltime in the spring(beginning january). this allows them to compete in spring ball and there first season would be the following fall.

usually, true freshmen who are younger or could use the time to develop physically or academically will be grayshirted as opposed to redshirted.

The grayshirt, redshirt, and third-team years are critical for the student athlete to get ahead with their studies so that they can focus on football during their most productive years without having to worry too much about their grades and academic requirements. I’d like to see a 90%+ graduation rate for scholies before McMackin retires. 90%+ accross the board for all scholies before Donovan retires, as well. 90% for ALL athletes would be too much to ask for as that would be much higher than the overall UH record, I think.

Makaula is an “athlete” no question. disclaimer — I think I am one of the few Punahou grads who regularly posts here so I am, admittedly, biased. Hopefully it will be a great game tonight. I would love to see Punahou win, but I do respect the winning tradition St Louis has built. St Louis didn’t lose a game for most of the time I was in high school.

I didn’t play football, but both my brothers did. If I remember correctly Punahou broke St Louis’ regular season winning streak at, what, 55 or something, right? My brother played on that team and sacked John Hao near the end zone to have a hand in preserving that win. It was a long time ago. I was in college on the east coast and my brothers called at like 2 am to tell me. Of course St Louis still won the Prep bowl that year. My brothers also called that first night that UH destroyed BYU– also at 2 or 3 am.

the best thing about Billy Ray is that he will be coming into school January. He has already been practicing with the guys during the unsupervised workouts and coming in early will only help him get ahead.

probably right about manu-olevao. But we also have a dozen or so returning players, so the O-line is pretty solid through the next season. It’s more a matter of them learning and mastering the proper techniques as Ron Lee pointed out in the last NaKoa luncheon.

Tuioti has already paid huge dividends in the short-term, hopefully he’s able to keep it up. have no doubts that he will. i know that graham seems like a solid ucla commit but imagine if somehow he’s able to get him over here along w/ alofipo and wadsworth.

besides VJ and Manley and Taz Stevenson, who’s the other local studs for 2010…

dj/al/mih – I like the size we’ll be getting on O-Line but they need to step it up next year and get into better conditioning.

Like dj said, look at the Tex Tech O-Line. Those guys are big but they are also in shape. They never appear tired during a game (at least in the three that I’ve watched this year). I overheard Craig James (I know, I know…I don’t like that guy either) talking about it on college gameday just before the Texas game. His son plays for Tech and he was saying how the O-line guys took it upon themselves to get together like 4 days a week or something over the summer and run…run…run. They would run like 2 miles a day and do a lot of coditioning drills. That showed they really wanted it and it has paid off big time….

Our boys need to do that in the coming off-season. IMHO, our O-line has appeared to be tired several times this year….but I’m a D guy so what do I know….LOL

Deseret News is calling for Utah State’s Brent Guy to be fired. Apparently he’s going to be fired even if Utah State wins the rest of their games.

As Utah State attempts to secure its future, it can’t move forward without distancing itself from its past — which includes the last four seasons under Guy. It can’t sell a program that includes the least-successful football coach in school history.

Heaven knows, winning at Utah State is tough. If the Aggies play one “money” game each year (last season was Oklahoma, the year before, Arkansas) that’s an automatic loss. So are games against Utah and BYU, if they’re both on the schedule. Then there are near-certain losses to Boise State, Fresno State and — on most years — Hawaii and Nevada.

That’s six or seven defeats before they’ve even kicked off.

This predicament has contributed to Guy’s 8-37 mark (.177), which is worse than predecessors Mick Dennehy (19-37, .339), Dave Arslaninan (7-15, .318), Chris Pella (9-24, .273) and any other Aggie coach.

Things have been particularly gruesome under Guy, whose teams have never finished higher than sixth in their conference. Expecting USU to beat Boise State is unrealistic. But why can’t it beat Idaho, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech and San Jose State every year?

Even if the Aggies win out this year, giving them a respectable 4-4 conference mark, it won’t be enough to convince many boosters to contribute. With a 4-8 overall record, USU still wouldn’t be bowl-eligible.

Guy has a year remaining on his contract, worth approximately $250,000. Although the athletic department may not be able to afford a buyout, it really can’t afford to keep him. It would likely cost more in lost donations than it would in salary.

At least in one sense, USU football is enjoying a resurgence. The new Laub Athletics Complex is a showcase. Sources say certain donors are willing to contribute more — but only if coaching changes are made.

The recruiting by the UH staff has brought tears of joy for me. I can clearly remember that a little over 10 years ago, we were harvesting 2nd team and honorable mention city and state players. If a blue-chip player signed with UH, it probably meant that he couldn’t meet academnic standards. Now, we’re getting players wanted by PAC 10 and other BCS schools. There’s much to be thankful for.

My project is going well, thank you for asking. I am presenting my work at the MILCOM conference next week and have a lot of networking/partnership meetings scheduled. So, next week will either be very, very good or really bad.

It appears that two other proposals that we are big parts of have been approved for funding. So, we should be able to increase the number of people we have at my company if the contracts are finished soon. Until everyone signs you can never feel safe!

Don’t forget that Texas Tech plays in the Big 12, which is MUCH easier to recruit top players to than the WAC. Elite recruits want to play in BCS conferences in football, as can be seen in the lists on scout and rivals.

The other factor is that a focus on local recruiting is great, but the people in Texas are much taller than the people in Hawaii…that makes the average OL recruit taller. If you check out the heights of the high school basketball players in Texas and Hawaii, you’ll see a big difference! I sure notice a difference every time I visit those 2 states.

regarding USU’s ticket count,
Bobby Curran this morning said that one USU home game was against BYU and it was sold out, with the majority of the tickets going to the Cougar fans. that certainly helps.
i don’t think NMSU has a good average for their stadium either. didn’t look like they had much at our game. they did get to host their rival New Mexico, and also hosted Boise, but I bet the visiting fans outnumbered the homeys (not including THE homey here).

When visiting teams can fill up stadiums, it’s a huge plus for the “home” team. That’s why UNLV loves it when Hawaii plays there. It is one of their few games that are sold out.

I think, as you already alluded to, what helps NMSU with their attendance issues is that they typically host UTEP or UNM every year. Both of those opponents usually deliver a sell-out for NMSU, though I’m with you that it’s probably a majority of the visiting fans buying up those tickets. They hosted Boise and drew ~16,000.

For NMSU, as long as they get either UTEP or UNM at their house on a yearly basis and get a decent draw (over 15k) on at least one of their other games, they will squeeze just above the 15,000 minimum.

On a side note, NMSU is selling ALL OF THEIR SEATS FOR $2 when they host Louisiana Tech in a couple weeks. That should certainly help in the attendance if the locals decide to partake in the promotion.

As for Utah State, who knows? They were certainly lucky to get BOTH BYU and Utah at home this year, but next year they have to go to BOTH SLC and Provo. Who knows what’s in the works for them…..

Kazz — I think an analogy that applies both to JD’s job as well as to the national economy, etc., is trying to steer a supertanker (or other large vessel). The order is given, the “wheel” is turned, but it takes awhile for the ship to be headed in the desired direction and get to its destination. We gotta be patient and appreciate the little evidences of progress (like recruiting, Ching Field, etc.).

We must be patient and it’s easier to be patient when we actually see some of the progress in front of our own eyes. Last I remember I saw some Matson-type containers at Ching Field so I assume that’s the turf itself? Plus you can see into the “unfinished” wing of the athletic complex when you make your way to SSC and you can clearly see furniture being moved in whereas it was a bunch of empty boxes. I believe AD JD said the new football offices were going to start in Jan or Feb of 09?

Great news about Keli’ikipi!

When we were camping at Waianae Army Rec this summer. Wade and Wes were there conditioning on the sand with a lot of football players. It was good to see them take the young ones and work with them to develop and get in shape every other afternoon. Looks like he could be a leader with off season conditioning when he gets to the team. That’s what we need to make sure that our players are in shape and ready to play once the season comes around.

BTW, I may be going to the BB game tonight if I can get someone to pick up my son from his Book Fair concert at Niu Valley. Anyone want a kid? Mrs. A-House? OK Liz, I’m just kidding. 😆

mih – I guess we differ in opinions because I don’t see Teo or any Hawaii athlete that chooses to go to school abroad as bringing shame to the islands or UH. If they don’t want the UH experience then that’s their choice. We shouldn’t be disowning them.

Being recruited or given the opportunity to play sports beyond high school by Hawaii athletes shows that Hawaii does have the athletes that can compete anywhere, anyplace, anytime, against the best out there.

Here we see Obama as our own and welcome him as a native son of Hawaii. But did he go to college in Hawaii? Did he hold office or represent Hawaii politically? He didn’t but we still see him as our own.

Kekoa – There are many Hawaii athletes that go to school other than UH. That doesn’t mean they are not loyal to these islands. Many have gone away and have come back and contributed to their community, their birthplace.

C’mon people, don’t hate the player, hate the game…

When I say shame.. I say it because UH is NOT in the top 5 options for consideration. That implies that UH isn’t offering our top local athletes enough of an offering (academics, perceived status and opportunities or otherwise) to make it even a consideration. I say shame to Hawaii, if UH is viewed that way. BUT I also say I wish him well wherever he may go because it’s not his fault if he perceives the opportunities at UH to be limited, it’s UH’s and the State for not marketing UH properly or not managing it’s resources and image better.

When the State had a ‘surplus’ they didn’t fix the schools and University. Now that the economy is taking a steep downturn, we may not see any improvement for an even longer spell. That worries me.

I’ve always felt that many leave for other universities not only to get the so-called, ‘mainland’ experience but because they sincerely feel that the educational opportunities are better elsewhere. me personally, I believe that education is what you make of it. When I used to interview potential employees for the companies I worked for, I never based my evaluation on the school they attended, although I will admit, I never turned a Havaard or Yale graduate down for at least an interview. Then again, I never hired one because I was always suspect as to why they would be applying for the job I was offering.. bwahahahhahah….

mih – in my daughter’s case she attends a mainland university because UH doesn’t offer the degree she is after.

I’m surprised that we only have 1 player from St. Louis going to UH. Are there any other D1 prospects currently on their team this year?

One of our brightest kids was accepted to Harvard. He came back after only a few months. The “culture shock” was too much and the ivy league social stratification (see Trading Places) interfered with his Pakala boy sensibilities.

College is not just about academic education.

I say we keep the homefires burning and leave the doors open so our kids can feel welcome if they change their minds.

All this talk about future warriors has me wondering who will step up and be a leader after we lose our Senior leaders like Solly and Adam. Especially during the off-season workouts. Besides Funaki, I’m wondering who that will be.

I can understand leaving for a degree that isn’t offered here. I can even understand going to a school with a better program in a particular study. Shoots, I can understand going for religious beliefs.

USC, UCLA, Stanford, BYU, Notre Dame? Notre Dame? BYU for religious reasons. Stanford maybe for academic excellence, but the other three? I’d think — pure football. As such, I just think that not being in the top FIVE for consideration is somewhat of a slap in the face for UH.

Since I was going to UH in the early 70’s they talked about taking UH to the next level academically. I remember those marches to the Capital on a number of ocassions demanding more for the school. Even then they talked about competing for the best professors, programs, and facilities. I saw them expand, but not improve. In fact, in the spirit of bringing more to UH, one of the first art shows with foreign artists in the then new Art Building, I arranged and I wasn’t even an art student. It was a fabulous place then. Now it’s simply an art building. I saw UH sprawling outwards but what has been left behind is going to ruin. How many times must Hamilton leaks be repaired before they get it right?

Sadly, without money, sponsors, or just an outspoken, extremely respected and influential advocate, I don’t see it changing, much.

When Colt opened his mouth about the soap dispensers, it was just the tip of the iceberg and it reflected badly on the UH administration and State. When we went to the Sugar Bowl, the local Citizenry made us proud in their support and numbers, the ones who tried to get a free ride off of UH embarrassed us again.

Building a tradition means building it in more than just football. But it has to start somewhere.. so why not football, eh?

Excellence here.. excellence there.. next basketball.. then regain the National Title in Wahine Volleyball… maybe even men’s. Who knows? It might become contagious and spread to other departments, as well.

Now that we have our defense forming up nicely lets get our offense some key players like uh a certain running back around my way. I’m telling you Coach I know you got the info and videos on him, he’s legit and will be a star at the college level guaranteed. Offer him a schollie, if he says yes we’ll have a Barry Sanders/Reggie Bush type RB for years, if not so what it won’t hurt to offer him.

t won’t happen, let’s be real about this. for various reasons some will go away. for us to retain 66 1/3% of them would be excellent i would say.

it looks like this regime will work very hard and have a great product/program to keep more and more of the local boys home.

as we get more and more recruiting classes like this one is developing into, the stadium will be packed for every game in just a few years.

At least you seem positive about the talent you are seeing. The offense isn’t going to run as smoothly as it should this early, especially given that Fleming was away from the team. I really wish coach Nash and the team well! He’ll get the team going, especially after a few recruiting classes gives him the depth and athleticism that he’s looking for in his system.

Also,

– Lasha needs to get the ball out of his hands, too many turnovers making dumb passes

– Balocka and Amis need to bang

– Again, give Flemings the ball and let him work…

Balocka is a whiner. Yes, he’s had a few bad calls, and no calls, but don’t beg! Da Refs are real chitheads, but when you whine on every call, you will get no sympathy from the devil.

This team is quick and athletic but they have defensive lapses. Amis and Balocka need to help out better on defense too many easy baskets down low.

Offense needs to run through Flemings he hasn’t touched the ball enough. You can tell though that he is very explosive and can create his own shot. The thing though is that the ball is not moving enough and players are standing too much. Need to set screens and move so they can create easier shots. I think we’ll be alright and things will get fixed. My only concern is we need a banger down low and a steady point. Also, they need to handle the ball better so many stupid turnovers…

Ralph ~ I guess you saw what I saw. Meanwhile Pauoa Boy made some spot on observations of lack of ball movement on offense. The sloppy passing, and sometimes making an extra pass when the shot should have been taken. They made more turnovers then the Liliha Bakery night shift.

There’s a glimmer of hope in this squad tho…they need time to gel just like the fb team. They just need to take care of the ball more.

give this team 8 games or so to find its groove. we don’t have the outside shooting of years past so we need to work our strengths which should be the inside game where i think we can outquick most teams.

the turnovers killed us. the jc transfers will learn that at this level the game has kicked it up a notch and they must take care of the ball.

our point guard play needs improvement. rather concerned with thompson’s injury as i felt that by the eighth game he would take command there.

lots to improve. i like the talent that is there. we need more firepower. i am sure nash will sort it out.

Hawaii Basketball Game Notes…in my opinion.

– This team is definitely athletic but they lack focus on defense…too many lapses letting guys drive to the hole with ease and giving up open threes.

– Roderick Fleming has the “It” factor and needs the ball more. Offense should run through him but Coach Nash needs to find a better way to get him in a position so he can create. Getting caught too many times in traffic.

– Balocka and Amis are both weak and need to learn how to bang! Plus Balocka needs to STFU and play the dayum game! We really need a banger down low but our post players are weak! Wonder if Ji Xiang can bang but I doubt it and he didn’t play either.

– Lasha is a good shooter but should not be handling the ball. Had way too many turnovers on poor decisions, stupid passes, and not protecting the ball. He should be coming off screens and spotting up to be more effective.

– Nitoto is okay but he needs to learn to distribute the ball…needs to penetrate and dish better. Too many times he drives to far into the lane and gets caught under the basket or too low in the paint in traffic. Regardless a point guard with 0 assists is terrible!

– Too much standing around on offense, poor screens, not enough movement without the ball.

– Defensively not enough talking going on…help defense is slow. Players need to communicate and move their feet, guards getting burned all night. Balocka and Amis need to learn how to block out down low, too much standing around and not fighting for position!

Anyway, although the game was very sloppy it’s early in the season and I expect to see big improvements. This team has the potential to be very good if they can limit there mistakes. I think if they run and push the ball that is when they are best. Half-court offense should get better but I’d like to see the point create more shots for the others.

How does our point guard not have any assist? I like this team. There biggest issue last year was interior rebounding. They seemed to solve that with a bigger front court personnel. Got out rebounded tonight but I’m sure this will improve immediately.

Give credit to Rex Walters and the Dons. He did a great job at Fla Atlantic. His new look Dons look pretty scrappy.

I don’t care for the Flex/Motion offense especially when you have athletic players like Nitoto and Fleming who are quick and can take it to the hole. Plus a decent shooter in Lasha and Amis who is quicker than most post players. In this offense they all seem to be bunched up and I agree they need space. Anyway, Coach Nash will fix things…but I hope he puts the ball in Flemings hands more and allows him to be more aggresive attacking the basket and scoring. I think Flemings is going to be unstoppable once things start clicking. He’s like a highlight waiting to happen and you can just feel his presence on the court!

Ji Xiang is young and still learning the game. Isn’t he like 18 or 19??? He should watch some Yao Ming highlights and work on his game daily. Hopefully he can learn the nuances of the game quick and contribute but who knows. Anyway, he has time to develop and I wasn’t expecting much from him though I wanted to see him play tonight.

The team lost their poise near the end of the 1st half and then never got it together again in the 2nd half. That game should have been their’s from the beginning. They left the door open for the Dons to rob their house.

I was very disappointed in the effort by our perimeter defenders in giving up those 3s. One time, a USF player had a wide-open shot because the UH defender who stepped up did not stick his hand in his face, but just held it out in front of him at the waist. He’s right in front of him, but doesn’t even bother to challenge him. I hope Coach Nash picked up on things like that, and puts in measures to correct that. I felt a lot of things could have been better if only the proper effort were put into it.

12% of Hawaii public school kids attempted suicide last year….. got to know what they’re doing and where they are as much as possible without being to restrictive…
