"Finish"

“Finish,” as in finish first, is quarterback Bryant Moniz’s motto (and motivation):

There doesn’t appear to be concern about the tweaks suffered by starters Darius Bright (turf toe), Miah Ostrowski (hamstring) and Aaron Brown. All should be good to go soon.

Here’s Brown (left) with Corey Paredes and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda:

Maybe it’s the hair cut. But observers marveled at long-snapper Luke Ingram’s new muscular look:

Punter Alex Dunnachie has been practicing his holds:

Tyler Hadden will be handling kickoffs, FGs and PATs:

Allen Sampson, Mike Edwards and Tank Hopkins were getting work returning punts. Here’s Hopkins:

Former Aussie Rules Football player Scott Harding also will get a shot at returning kicks:

Former Warrior and NFL receiver Ashley Lelie again will be helping out:

Everybody gets a turn hitting (and holding) the bag, including Hadden and Dunnachie. Here’s linebacker Corey Paredes:

Everybody says cornerback Mike Edwards passed the “eye test,” and they weren’t referring to the chart with the big E:

By the way, Edwards and Allen Sampson both wear No. 2, which means only one of them gets to be on the punt-return team.

Tony Tuioti, who coaches the defensive tackles, works with Zach Masch, Kaniela Tuipulotu and Haku Correa:

Wait . Could that be a recruit?

Nope.

Hold on. Is that a Boise State spy?

‘Fraid not.

The visitor was former UH football and basketball player Tony Akpan. He is married, with two children, and runs a farm in Oregon.

  6. CoolEthan August 5, 2011 7:35 am

“If you ain’t first, your last”

That should be this years slogan

  7. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 7:35 am

Hi there, Ron, nice to see a lurker being #1 for a change.

  8. CoolEthan August 5, 2011 7:36 am

anyone can start a job, but it take a real someone that can finish it.

add in, finish it well and complete

  9. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 7:36 am

not a big fan of tattoos. Don’t understand why guys want to endure the pain for something like that.

  10. bugaz August 5, 2011 7:38 am

    yay pictures

  11. CoolEthan August 5, 2011 7:39 am

If not for tats, how would the Rolling Stones create the album, Tatoo You ?

Reminds me, if God didn’t intend for us to eat meat, he wouldn’t of invented steak sauce.

  12. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 7:41 am

Without a tat, how would you trade for a … oh, never mind.

  13. d1shima August 5, 2011 7:41 am

    Great Morning All!

    Tat’s amazing! 😉

  14. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 7:42 am

haha. my goodness, Ethan, you sound so erudite.

  15. d1shima August 5, 2011 7:43 am

Love that pic of Ashley Lelie…a game of inches!

  16. d1shima August 5, 2011 7:44 am

    I tot I taw a puddy-tat!

  17. bugaz August 5, 2011 7:44 am

Getting tattoo equals couple hours of pain

Playing football equals countless hours of pain

Just a way for an individual to showcase their interest

  18. d1shima August 5, 2011 7:45 am

Keep an eye on those “should be alright” injuries…

  19. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 7:46 am

    Re: Tattoos

It took Moniz eight hours for his recent tattoo procedure: 3 hours each for wrist bands, 2 hours for the “Finish.”

  20. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 7:47 am

my niece got 3 tattoos on the mainland:

    right shoulder: a gun

    neck: a hand grenade

    left shoulder: bullets

I am amazed she managed to find a job in the health field.

  21. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 7:47 am

    d1:

Yeah, you’re right about that. Bright was out there yesterday, but turf toes usually require a lot of rest and a lot of ice packs. This is the one time it’s all right to have cold feet.

  22. bugaz August 5, 2011 7:47 am

Great to see Ashley Lelie helping out.

  23. 99club August 5, 2011 7:48 am

    Nice pics, ST!

    …looking up ‘erudite.’

  24. d1shima August 5, 2011 7:48 am

Hmmm….hopefully the QB’s and Receivers will start zero-ing in on those passes going forward. Pictures of guys stretching, crouching, jumping to make catches….

  25. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 7:49 am

    Gigi:

    Your niece is Nicki Minaj?

(Speaking of whom, isn’t Lil Wayne coming to town in September?)

  26. bugaz August 5, 2011 7:49 am

    Turf toe or gout

  27. Last Call August 5, 2011 7:50 am

Pollard equals monstah year!!! go get um brah!

  29. bugaz August 5, 2011 7:54 am

Luke Ingram will be making a lot of $$$$ for many years in the NFL. Stay healthy Luke. Glad you chose to be a Warrior

  30. d1shima August 5, 2011 7:55 am

    bugaz,

Dunnachie’s got a good plan, too. Lotsa potential $$$ for a Punter who can placehold as well.

  31. bugaz August 5, 2011 7:55 am

    Bring it BR “Super” Stutzmann

  32. Slugger August 5, 2011 7:55 am

  34. bugaz August 5, 2011 7:58 am

Fo shua! Dunnachie just has to be more consistant, but I’m sure he will get it.

  35. bugaz August 5, 2011 7:58 am

    Congrats Olin Kreutz!!!

  36. Pomai August 5, 2011 7:59 am

IMHO the only good tattoo is one where you can wash it off two or three days later when you realize “Oh crap why did I do that”

  37. madeinhawaii August 5, 2011 8:01 am

    Nice pics!

    Morning!

  38. Pomai August 5, 2011 8:01 am

They need to let Alex just bust dem loose, forget about trying for the conner.

  39. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 8:02 am

    lol Pomai. I agree.

  40. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 8:03 am

  42. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 8:04 am

ST, I don’t know who Nicki and Wayne are.

  43. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:05 am

    Pomai:

Remember those packs of Japanese gum that included press-on tattoos?

    No?

I guess I’m busy today because I’m dating myself.

  44. bugaz August 5, 2011 8:05 am

As fast as Luke Ingram gets down field, you are right, they should let Alex boot um.

  45. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:06 am

    Gigi:

That’s because you didn’t have to drive teenagers to school.

  46. bugaz August 5, 2011 8:07 am

They still have those gum packs, they just don’t seem to work as well.

  47. CoolEthan August 5, 2011 8:07 am

So a blonde see’s Moniz’ tatoo “finish” and replies, ” Funny, you don’t look like your from Finland.”

  48. d1shima August 5, 2011 8:08 am

Those things NEVER worked well…always looked like a multi-colored ink smudge on your forearm.

  49. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:08 am

The Warriors can’t be in pads until Monday, so workouts today and tomorrow will be at Ching field.

Mostly conditioning stuff, which is why David Graves, Kevin Spain and Shane Austin were DBs, and Darryl McBride was a running back. Everything goes back to normal Monday.

  50. d1shima August 5, 2011 8:09 am

    😆

    CoolEthan,

Good ting for you PIAADoris is not around!

  51. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:09 am

    CoolEthan:

    Now that’s funny.

  52. Jwilks August 5, 2011 8:09 am

Any news on how my friend Brendan Daley is doing? Can’t wait to see him play!

  53. d1shima August 5, 2011 8:10 am

Everything goes back to normal Monday.

    😎

(did I mention that I’m off on Tuesday?)

  54. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:11 am

    JWilks:

    Daley did really well.

He’s wearing Heun’s No. 5, and he’s showing a lot of speed. Yesterday, he was working strictly as the strong-side linebacker; they plan on giving him some rush-end work next week.

  55. ai-eee-soos August 5, 2011 8:12 am

took less money, if this is true, from nfl.com

Kreutz , Saints reach terms on one-year deal After visiting the Saints on Thursday, veteran center Olin Kreutz will agree to terms with the team on a one-year deal worth roughly $2 million, according to league sources.

  56. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:13 am

Say hi to Wena today. She’s going car-shopping in your area.

I told her she should get a tattoo that says “finish” when she’s negotiating with the “manager.”

  57. CoolEthan August 5, 2011 8:14 am

If he would of had the word “Winning” instead of “Finish”, everyone would think he want’s to be in the Charlie Sheen fan club

  58. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:14 am

    Re: gum

They had a lot of flavor. For 4 seconds. Then it’s like chewing booger.

  59. d1shima August 5, 2011 8:15 am

    😳

(did you mention to Wena that I’m off today, too?)

  60. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 8:15 am

Just make sure Wena does not buy a Honda Civic

  61. d1shima August 5, 2011 8:16 am

and you know “like chewing booger” because….

  62. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:17 am

    Gigi:

It probably would be better to buy a stolen Honda Civic. I hear there are several of them out there.

(Wow, Gigi, that was a subtle way of letting us know you’re an S-A subscriber.)

  63. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 8:17 am

    d1, ST speaks from experience

  64. d1shima August 5, 2011 8:17 am

Great rationale….maybe buy a Yugo. No one is stealing those!

  65. LizKauai August 5, 2011 8:18 am

YeeHaaa! The sights and smells of football in the air! Thanks for the great pix, ST.

    Jett Jett Jett!

  66. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 8:18 am

with the shortage of parts in Japan, more Japanese cars will be stolen.

  67. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:19 am

Remember several years ago when we used to laugh at people who bought Kias.

And then gas went to $4 a gallon, and all of a sudden people are buying Kia SUVs.

  68. CoolEthan August 5, 2011 8:19 am

Isn’t GM ( Gov’t. Motors) thinking about re-creating the Yugo?

SNL had a skit long ago spoofing the Yugo, called ” The Adobe”

  69. bugaz August 5, 2011 8:20 am

Chewing boogers? using imagination oh wait will ask son! lol

  70. Pomai August 5, 2011 8:20 am

#61 I was thinking the same thing

  71. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:21 am

I feel confident in the security of my car.

    I’ve got guard cockroaches.

The other day I found my grandkid’s old diaper in the back.

  72. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:21 am

    No. 61:

Sometimes practices run long and you haven’t had lunch …

  73. Da Punchbowl Kid August 5, 2011 8:22 am

Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 Lots o’ good pics Mr. Tsai. How are things looking in your opinion? What’s your early take on the O-line for example.

  74. d1shima August 5, 2011 8:22 am

The good news there is, “How old could it really be?”

  75. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:23 am

I used to have a Pinto in high school.

Always wondered why nobody wanted to ride in it.

  76. sjmacro August 5, 2011 8:25 am

    Gmorn-practice at grass field-sj

  77. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 8:26 am

wow, ST must have been rich. A car in high school???

    I got my 1st car when I was 33.

    Before that, I walked.

  78. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:26 am

    sjmacro:

    Thanks.

And thanks for blowing my cover. I’m still at home looking for sun screen.

  79. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:29 am

    Gigi:

It was a used car. Got it from my sister. A couple of times the windshield wiper didn’t work. So I would roll down the window (while getting splashed) and use my left hand to wipe away the rain.

And, of course, you know the Pinto ended up being recalled because sometimes, on impact, it would, well, EXPLODE.

You’d be amazed at how many valets would say: You know what, free parking if you do it yourself.

  80. CoolEthan August 5, 2011 8:32 am

    The Pinto story

Ha- Now that’s a good one. A vintage car that is theft proof in it’s own right. We had a Pinto rental in Los Angeles once. One of the only times I was scared to the bone.

  81. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 8:33 am

Pinto was a dangerous car. I remember a trucker being charged for rear-ending a Pinto, which burst into flames. The 2 occupants of the car died.

  82. d1shima August 5, 2011 8:33 am

Pinto’s got handed down a lot in the late 70’s….

  83. d1shima August 5, 2011 8:34 am

    I had one.

Just had to make sure you never stopped.

  84. Kevin August 5, 2011 8:36 am

    Tattoos…

When I had a 10 hour operation, my anesthesiologist was a younger guy with sleeves on both arms…

    Behold, I am NOT dead.

Amazing how these people with tattoos are able to function in society yeah???? SARCASM…. 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

I also have a friend with a tattoo running up the side of her ribcage. So far, she has not shanked me or stolen any of my things. AMAZING!

Come to think of it, me and all my friends have 4 or more tattoos and I dunno how the hell we ever managed to legally make money to support ourselves?????? Guess we’re lucky!

Gonna step away now, “Howdy Doodie” re-runs are on TV now. 😆 😆 😆 😆

  85. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 8:38 am

I remember in fourth grade, we got to wear asbestos gloves.

We sure grew up in a time before Leavitt, Yamane and Soldner.

  86. sjmacro August 5, 2011 8:38 am

    No need sunscreen

  87. Souljah August 5, 2011 8:43 am

  91. madeinhawaii August 5, 2011 8:48 am

‘Running a farm in Oregon’… Sounds like Tony Akpan is doing well… that’s good to hear.

  92. madeinhawaii August 5, 2011 8:50 am

Oh yeah… and congrats to Robin Ah Mow Santos on her new position as the Assistant Coach for the Wahine Volleyball team.

  93. Kevin August 5, 2011 8:50 am

    It’s “official”:

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2011/7/29/WVB_ 0729110425.aspx

HONOLULU – University of Hawai’i head women’s volleyball coach Dave Shoji announced the hiring of Robyn AhMow-Santos as the new assistant coach on the Rainbow Wahine volleyball staff.

“I’m thrilled that we’re able to hire a former alumnus with so much knowledge of the game,” said Coach Shoji. “Robyn is one of the all-time greats in UH history and we’re excited that she’s returned to the program. She’ll work with our setters and her experience as a three-time Olympian will only help them get better. During her professional career, she’s learned from many great international coaches and she’ll bring some of that knowledge to our program.”

  94. mctruck August 5, 2011 8:51 am

I remember riding with my mother in her pinto from Honolulu to Kailua in Nuuanu going up toward the Pali, and her car was sputtering and smoking, and naturally we were in the slow lane, and before you know it, even the city bus was passing us by because ol’pinto de-blue couldn’t go any faster even while mother had the gas pedal to the metal-la dat!!

  95. bugaz August 5, 2011 8:56 am

Congrats to Robyn AhMow-Santos! Very nice addition to what seems to be a great Wahine team. Go get um gals!!!

  96. mctruck August 5, 2011 8:56 am

Congratulations to Robyn AhMow-Santos…..keep it in da family.

  97. GondaOhana August 5, 2011 8:58 am

  98. bugaz August 5, 2011 8:58 am

  103. Bryson August 5, 2011 9:00 am

Mo got tattoo’d at my uncles shop in Kalihi so did Cory Paredes…I haven’t seen it until now but it looks awesome and I can now say I got tattoo’d by the same guy as a Heisman Canidate….

  104. bugaz August 5, 2011 9:03 am

Lance Keke Williams nice highlight video. So will he be joining the team for spring ball next year?

  105. Kevin August 5, 2011 9:04 am

Someone wearing an orange shirt with blue pants shouldn’t alarm anyone, especially the players.

They are already used to people watching them while wearing any kine color they want except for the only two or three colors that really matter.

  106. bugaz August 5, 2011 9:05 am

Congrats to Bryson! That will take you far. Nah just kidding. Tats look great

  107. Souljah August 5, 2011 9:06 am

    bugaz,

That’s what his Farrington Head coach said in an article a couple days ago.

  108. bugaz August 5, 2011 9:06 am

Not to mention all the orange chairs at the stadium

  109. Kevin August 5, 2011 9:08 am

ahem!! *faded orange, now creamish colored-chairs”.

  110. bugaz August 5, 2011 9:09 am

#107 Mean! looking forward too. Hope he works hard till then and packs on a few pounds of muscle for extra added Katoosh

  111. Couch potato August 5, 2011 9:10 am

wow, lookie at all the pics! thanks ST for keeping many of us in the groove.

another new one, tattoo ignorance. 😆

congratulations to Robyn AhMow-Santos! who would’ve thunk-it. lol

  112. bugaz August 5, 2011 9:10 am

About half are new now! Just the other half are older than me

  113. SteveM August 5, 2011 9:11 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Nice photos, ST!

    Ford Pinto?

That was the first car I ever bought with my own money in 197… paid under $2,000 (FINAL TOTAL) as I recall. Met a gal after she smashed in my car door when opening hers. Hmmmm…

  114. Couch potato August 5, 2011 9:12 am

pinto, mustang, colt, bronco. vroom hee haw!

  115. Bryson August 5, 2011 9:15 am

I like Keke’s highlight reel he seems to play at full speed…I just hope he learns to wrap up when he tackles as we saw last season big hits don’t mean a thing if you don’t wrap up and bring the guy down…

  116. bugaz August 5, 2011 9:15 am

Way to take the initiative Scott Harding! Hope it all works out.

  117. Midnight August 5, 2011 9:17 am

    ST: LIKE dem pictures!!!

  118. Couch potato August 5, 2011 9:17 am

SteveM, 197? you are grotesquely old! must have been a huge tita for her to open her door and smash your door. can just imagine the mass and velocity she must generate opening a door.

  119. bugaz August 5, 2011 9:25 am

should have offered her a scholly

  120. RedZone August 5, 2011 9:27 am

Sampson looks really quick and fast. Imagine if he took the first kickoff of the season and took it to the house.

    Congrats to Robyn.

  121. tommui August 5, 2011 9:33 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  124. WarriorNY August 5, 2011 9:51 am

    Hey all,

a bit off topic but I’m confused on the basketball team trip to China. How is that allowed by the NCAA???

I mean its a great tool for recruiting and getting exposure in the large market but i don’t understand how the basketball team can go to China during the off-season while the football team can’t have coaches present during off-season workouts???

  125. d1shima August 5, 2011 9:56 am

    Shhhhhh…..

i guess the little birdie was correct once again.

    she fits the bill.

shoji needed someone to work his new setters.

    shoji needed a female coach.

shoji needed a coach with major credentials to help recruit.

shoji needed a coach who is young enough to demonstrate what he wants.

shoji needed a coach who will work with him.

    Al,

    Care for a wager????

I think I am 1-0 on you so far. Remember the Ray Hisatake wager? I guessed he’d stay on the oline whereas you thought he’d revert to the dline?

Anyway, I think Charlie Wade is keeping tabs on that Wahine job… if the opportunity presents himself, he’ll give it a shot.

Thanks, LizK for that short video of Alex Green. I like his maturity when speaking.

  144. Kevin August 5, 2011 11:07 am

I can see it now… years down the line when Dave Shoji hangs it up and the new coach is named, it will be like the Vatican electing a new Pope.

The Rainbow Wahine volleyball program is one hearlded in tradition and a religious-type following, this is the kind of fever many programs would kill for, this is the kind of following some basketball and football programs from other schools would kill for, in fact, this is the following I wish all other UH programs had.

In the end I can see Charlie Wade earning that job. I don’t know Charlie Wade personally but I imagine a single tear rolling down his cheek as he makes his first public speech at the press conference upon accepting the postion.

    Tis written in the stars…

Charlie Wade is more than a familiar face. He’s going to be his own coach with his own style. His energy will resonate throughout that bench much as it does for the Warriors today.

I don’t doubt he’s loyal to his current duties and prepares for the future, but you just gotta know…

  146. warriorsun August 5, 2011 11:29 am

    stephen,

as usual you are on it, thanx for the pics.

when it comes to turf-toe and hammies im not one to take it lightly. esp the skill players who depend on maximum output to perform. ill spare the historic examples, suffice to say–these injuries are serious stuff and can remain for the season’s duration.

fortunately, we have depth in chris gant, allen sampson and others. hope aaron brown comes back, he is a field leader on D and game breaker–when at full-tilt.

  147. Hilo Moon August 5, 2011 11:30 am

  148. clowns nose August 5, 2011 11:35 am

Is Tommy doing a good job?

The reason I mention this is because I was reading on another blog (SMU) about Tommy (current strength coach) this and Tommy that, and Mel (former strength coach) this and Mel that, and the argument centered on comparing the two, with one poster pointing out to the fact that a high number of UH players were kept out of this past year’s spring practices. Huh? Can you believe that? Spring practices? Tell that person that spring practices allowed the players the opportunity to rehab. It was also precautionary. Not a reflection on Tommy. But that was what this one poster pointed out, namely the number of player UH kept out of spring practices. Funny stuff.

Looking back at the 2010 season and Tommy’s first season as strength and conditioning coach. Hawaii didn’t struggle with injuries. Players have been quoted as saying that Tommy gets us loose and stretched out. Reading these player’s quotes it was like it was a revelation to these players compared to when Mel was here.

    http://www.philsteele.com/Blogs/2011/Aug11/DBAug05.html

According to Phil Steele’s Blog today-

    Starts Lost to Injury 2010

    UH-13 (6 offense, 7 defense)

Starts Lost to Injury 2009 (Mel’s last year at UH)

    UH-33

    Start Lost to Injury 2010

    SMU-33 (Mel’s first year)

Some injuries I agree is misfortune, bad step here, bad step step there, but I think the greater the player is conditioned physically, mobility and flexibly it increasing the odds of the player not getting injured. Tommy is doing a great job.

    Turf toe

Turf toe is a sprain to the ligaments around the big toe joint, which works primarily as a hinge to permit up and down motion. Just behind the big toe joint in the ball of your foot are two pea-shaped bones embedded in the tendon that moves your big toe. Called sesamoids, these bones work like a pulley for the tendon and provide leverage when you walk or run. They also absorb the weight that presses on the ball of the foot.

When you are walking or running, you start each subsequent step by raising your heel and letting your body weight come forward onto the ball of your foot. At a certain point you propel yourself forward by “pushing off” of your big toe and allowing your weight to shift to the other foot. If the toe for some reason stays flat on the ground and doesn’t lift to push off, you run the risk of suddenly injuring the area around the joint. Or if you are tackled or fall forward and the toe stays flat, the effect is the same as if you were sitting and bending your big toe back by hand beyond its normal limit, causing hyperextension of the toe. That hyperextension can — either over time or, if forceful enough, all at once — cause a sprain in the ligaments that surround the joint.

Typically with turf toe, the injury is sudden. Its most commonly is seen in athletes playing on artificial surfaces, which are harder than grass surfaces and to which cleats are more likely to stick. It can also happen on a grass surface, especially if the shoe being worn doesn’t provide adequate support for the foot. Often the injury occurs in athletes wearing flexible soccer-style shoes that let the foot bend too far forward.

    GOUT

Gout is a disorder that results from deposits of sodium uric acid crystals, which accumulate in the joints because of high blood levels of uric acid (hyperuricemia), leading to attacks of painful joint inflammation.

Accumulations of uric acid crystal can intermittently cause severe joint or tissue pain and inflammation.

Doctors remove fluid from the joint and check it for uric acid crystals.

Drugs are given to relieve inflammation and pain, prevent further attacks, and sometimes decrease blood levels of uric acid.

Gout is more common among men than women. Usually, gout develops during middle age in men and after menopause in women. Gout is rare in younger people but is often more severe in people who develop the disorder before age 30. Gout often runs in families.

    SEASIDER #151 – re gout

Modern medicine at work. Colchicine injection is often the medicine of choice when you have an accute attack of gout.

It gives you the “runs” which flushes out the uric acid and keeps you running literally to the bathroom.

Like I said – modern medicine at work!

  157. mctruck August 5, 2011 12:36 pm

Tattoos aren’t cheap, and yes I have a couple myself; what I’m wondering, since it’s become so popular especially among athletes both pro and college, where do these college athletes get their tattoos, especially living on a shoe string as they say?? No-mo money for books and eats, but get kala for, tattoos???

  158. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2011 12:41 pm

Dirk Nowitzky has no tattoos. Very sexy.

  160. Couch potato August 5, 2011 12:59 pm

Dirk can be Frankenstein with minimal make-up.

  161. Kevin August 5, 2011 1:05 pm

In Hawaii, a lot of people have their own tattoo machines and supplies. An example is I have a friend, who is part Hawaiian and she has a relative that does polynesian tattoos and does them well and very cheap.

It’s not uncommon for some local people to know family members that can do them. There are also a lot of legit tattoo places that run via word of mouth that keep their prices low.

Usually polynesian tattoos that cover a bicep can run anywhere from $250-$400 depending on how complex the design is and of couse who is charging.

All of mine was done at T&T Tattoo in Aiea. First place I found in the phonebook that heavily advertised and boasted their State of Hawaii Health license thing so I went there. Pricey though I have four altogether on my shoulders and extending down to the elbow probably collectively cost $500 or $600. So as you can see it is one of the more costly places on the island. It was only AFTER the fact that I found out the prices from other places, but since over the course of three years I got used to the people at T&T.

So I don’t think college kids are going to high-end places like Hart and Hunnington in Waikiki for their tattoos. Lots of UH student athletes, male and female, have polynesian style tattoos and I wouldn’t be surprised if they either have a relative that can do it or have a friend that has a relative that can do it because this is Hawaii and like I mentioned, a lot of local people, more than some think, possess the ability and the tools needed to make tattoos.

  162. Kevin August 5, 2011 1:07 pm

Then you also have to figure, if someone doesn’t know anyone, then their parents pay for them. I know of several people that had tattoos paid for by their parents because of it’s cultural significance to their family heritage.

  163. Kevin August 5, 2011 1:13 pm

And yes, some parents are paying for their kids tattoos and they are not bad parents. At 18, my parents never paid for mine, that’s what a part time job was for. At first my mom was like “WHAT?” then 10 minutes later asked to borrow my car for the day and never cared. Then my dad was going through a mid-life crisis and wanted one too, but I actually talked him out of it. 😆

It’s 2011 and tattoos are not the sign of the devil or a convict.

    Dennis Halloran:

    August 5th, 2011 at 1:18 pm

There was a recent well researched article about unemployment trends in recent college grads and the #1 reason recent grads did not get jobs after interviews was Tatoos and skin piercings.

Then that is their own stupidity. I thought long and hard about extending my tattoos below the elbow to the wrist many times before, but ceased due to the discriminatory factor in which companies filter applicants.

Maybe it’s my way of thinking and a few others, but quite frankly making a hiring decision on the basis of things like visible tattoos or piercings (although this can get out of hand more often compared to tattoos) is quite OUT DATED.

How often have we, in our respective professional fields encountered INCOMPETENCE at the workplace or from other companies you need to work with?

Personally speaking, I have encountered personal frustration with incompetence from so-called management trainees with degrees from high-profile college institutions getting to my company based on the paper value of their degree only to end up being reprimanded for costly errors and they end up working in construction??? TRUE STORY I swear on my grandparents grave.

All clean cut looking guys too.

My point is the so-called aim of looking for the “brightest and youngest” is complete bull****. I do not dispute the facts presented in the blockquoted post, but anyone with a level head should question the VALIDITY of such out-dated discrimination.

Now my question is, where is is article and what is the validity of this study.?

If the study claims that the # 1 reason these people did not get jobs is because of appearance, how can this be confirmed as factual and documented truth with regards to this particular demographic considering many companies and their HR divisions do NOT disclose such information?

I mean it’s a fact companies frown upon visible tattoos and excessive piercings, but to do a study and to back it with facts, one would have to do their work, call these companies, ask for their human resources department and have them divluge FACTS on real prospects or a generalization of their hiring process which a lot of companies are tight-lipped about.

To me, there is nothing valid about calling a company and asking them “oh, why would you not hire college graduates?” to which they respond “because of tattoos”. First of all, the implied arrogance will be no longer “implied” and the justification is lacking in intergrity.

Again, the original post suggests that a specific target demographic of college graduates are not being hired due to tattoos and piercings tells me that they somehow obtained specific information on actual job applicants from a company’s human resources division and that, as far as I have been familiar with, is not permissible per the policies of many companies.

  169. Curt August 5, 2011 1:44 pm

UCLA with Sealy could be a major thorn in our side for years. Would he come back?

  170. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 1:55 pm

The problem with some of these “tweaks” is that it’s going to limit options. Ideally, UH would like to redshirt some receivers. For instance, Allen Sampson would be a good player to redshirt. He played as a true freshman last year, and with a year off, he could gain more weight, then have three years to play three seasons. But if the receivers are iffy, then the Warriors can’t start stockpiling receivers.

  171. Kevin August 5, 2011 1:55 pm

    No worry about Mike Sealy.

Charlie Wade will take care of everything when the time comes.

  172. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 1:56 pm

I’m sure if Shoji retired, Charlie Wade will be one of the first to apply.

On the fence. Still uncertain are the situations with Gerry Blakes, Dillon Biggs, Victor Bermudez, and Joaquim. You would have to say at this point is that they ain’t here, until they are here. Right now, it looks like the following:

    1. Zane Johnson

    2. Trevor Wiseman

    3. Bobby Miles

    4. Josten Thomas

    5. Hauns Brereton

    6. Shaquille Stokes

    7. Pii Minns

    8. Tyler Brown

    9. Davis Rozitis

    10. Jace Tavita – not available until the second semester.

    11. Kainoa Chu

    12. Tyler McDaniels ?

    13. Gerry Blakes ?

    14. Dillon Biggs ?

    15. Vander Joaquim ? stil on the Angola National team.

    16. Victor Bermudez ?

There are still a lot of question marks, but I hope things will fall into place by the time school starts in a couple of weeks when school starts

To be clear as I know some will try to spin my words, but I’m not saying that a tattooed army of guys and girls with mohawks are going to run the world and all major industries of business.

Just saying that the brightest and youngest our country has to offer for the future all won’t fit the mold of “Timmy Johnson Smith” with his slicked back hair complete with his suit and tie with his trusty copy of the Wall Street Journal always tightly rolled up to “shoo away” homeless people from the front of his house.

The tickets I bought ended up directly behind them. We sat in our assigneded seats figuring the place would be crowded.

I’ve never met them before but admired what they do.

I will say this though, they looked at me and my friends and actually one of them asked “oh, you sure those are your seats”?

I gonna shut up now before I go off and ST has to edit this post…. I’m never sitting anywhere near there again.

  184. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 2:40 pm

Thanks to D1, wife just got a good deal on a car.

OK, back to talk about tattoos.

  185. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2011 2:49 pm

Tattoos and body piercings shouldn’t make a difference.

But to some employers, it does.

So, it becomes a matter of percentages.

Unless you’re applying at a tattoo parlor, no employer will hold it against you if you don’t have a tattoo.

But if 25 percent of the employers don’t want somebody with a tattoo, then a person with a tattoo has been eliminated outright from 25 percent of the employment opportunities.

In the competitive job market, it doesn’t matter what you think of yourself, it matters what the employer thinks of you.

  186. Wes'side Warrior August 5, 2011 2:56 pm

  187. Kevin August 5, 2011 3:12 pm

In the competitive job market employers should also evaluate their options on hiring the most competent employees they can find as well.

Should there be obstacles, there should be a compromise if the employer values his or her company’s success.

Im not bitter here. I have applied for and worked two state jobs in my teens, part time job during schooling, and now a full time job. I have never been declined a job I have interviewed for.

    Kevin:

In an ideal world, HR people go through each application.

    On Planet Earth, not so.

There are so many applications, employers look for ways to thin the pile.

Now, if I were an employer, I wouldn’t care if somebody had a degree. I can understand circumstances, such as economics, family obligations, work, etc.

But I would hold it against an applicant if he didn’t want to get a degree. You want an applicant to at least aspire to learn more.

Of self expression much like the clothes you choose to wear…Personally for me I’m 30yrs old and could care less if someone see’s me in a different light because I have piercing’s and tattoo’s…Life isn’t about being popular or following the crowd that’s what high school is for…All of my body art has significant meaning to me and are a representation of what I had gone through in life…

    Re-Moniz’s tattoo

A story like this wouldn’t emanate from the Boise camp.

Dennis Rodman and Madona can dig it, I don’t.

After reading about Moniz’s tattoo, here, and on a sport’s telecasts last night, I now have a deeper appreciation for the Dan Robinson and Greg Alexander types instead of Moniz.

Thankfully this is the last year of the Moniz Show.

INCUBUS – ever heard them perform. nows your chance. they will be at the Kakaako amphitheater tonight. daughter and friends are going.

never heard of them so i asked questions.

pop or rock? – mom, they are alternative.

like yanni? – no far from yanni.

hard rock or soft rock? – hard rock

    heavy metal? – no

more like Rolling Stones or more like Beatles? – more like Rolling Stones.

so now this wahine has a vague idea of what to expect from INCUBUS. not going, tho.

a president doesnt need to be a rhodes scholar to know you cant spend more than you make. in the case of barry he is a harvard law graduate and wont release his grades.

never mind, his fiscal management of the usa just caused a lowering of our bond rating. first time in 70 years. first president. you’ll pay for it if the interest rates goes up and the economy dips for a second water-boarding.

gov perry is running a state that is operating in the black with low unemployment figures and attracting corporations, especially from california, because of their low-base taxing and relaxed regulations. not bad for a D student…..we need more of his dna.

now, on the local scene– kekoa kaapu, milton holt and mufi were harvard grads too. need i say more?

“his fiscal management of the usa just caused the lowering of our bond rating” – really? it’s the President’s fault? here I thought Congress, especially the Republicans, was to blame.

yep, I realize it was on his watch, but the President does not control fiscal responsibility – that belongs to Congress! more specifically, the House fo Reps.

I hear tell that many Texans and New Jersians want their Govs to run for President so they can get rid of them – both have very low State ratings – in the low 40% so they say.

And under Perry’s watch, Texas redistricted their lines to favor Republicans and reason for so many State republicans and Congressional delegation.

#221-Last year could be better but it wasn’t bad. The Warrior lost a lot of third quarter battles, but overall it was better than 2008, 2009.

Stick to old school. Be discreet. His tattoo looks goofy, ecccentric. If that’s the case with his teammates and fans being in love with his tattoo then why don’t the Warriors change the image of their team and have all 120 players put personal messages (tattoos) on their fingers? Watch. The next move Bryant will make is a petition of name change to Bryant Metta World Peace.

One thing she taught me was that all “studies or surveys” can be directed to achieve your goal by selecting only the questions or items that favors your position. Therefore, I don’t put much stock in surveys and will not participate in any phone call for such.

When we talk about our credit rating and the deficit, let’s look at some facts instead of heat.

Under President Reagan, our deficit increased 186%

Then under Bush (Sr.), the deficit increased 54%

Under President Clinton, the deficit increased by 41%

Then under President Bush (fils) the deficit climbed another 72%

Under President Obama, the deficit increased 23%

Mack says Masch is a defensive tackle who will be used as a defensive end in the “big-man” scheme featuring three DTs.

Liko Satele and Paipai Falemalu are the starting DEs. While Desmond Dean, Marcus Malepeai and Beau Yap have made great improvements, look for Craig Cofer and Tavita Woodard to break into the DE rotation.

    lol. what a joke.

talk about cooking the stats. 10% of a trillion is much more than 50% of one billion….nice try.

    under obama , we are spending $4.2 b a day. bush spent $1.6 b a day.

i guess u believe our bond rating downgrade was coincidental?

first president ever. bond ratings started in 1917, but for the attack on pearl harbor that triggered a downgrade, this has never happened.

what happened to the trillion he used to stimulate the economy?

what happened to rebound summer 2010?

what happened to “ill never increase the debt ceiling”.

what happened to his pledge in 2008 “ill lower unemployment from 8% in a year (it is now at 9.2%).

what happened to “we are not red states, blue states, we are the united states”.

what happened to cut, cap and balance?

look, barry is a community organizer. he is in over his head. same in hawaii. we have a gov that has never worked one day in the private sector. never ran a legitimate business.

    career politicians.

    keep spinning.

believe the crap you read in this daily.

Bush took the two wars he started off budget. In other words he just didn’t count then as deficit spending. Obama wanting to be more honest about the budget put the two wars back on the budget.

  259. Old Diver August 5, 2011 11:28 pm

When President Obama took office the country was losing over 800,000 jobs a month. The Bush recession was in full swing. We were just a few months from entering the Second Great Republican Depression. While job growth is anemic Obama did stop the country from falling into an economic black hole.

  268. al August 6, 2011 1:23 am

    curt…two things.

one, if the pain keeps coming back then there is something definitely wrong.

two, if it is an occasional muscle pain then some remedial stuff can be done, lomi lapa’au, etc.

three, if it is unbearable and in the same point all the time or after certain movements, then you need to go under the knife. “scope surgery”.

four, you are not getting younger, it will get worse.

years ago, i could throw bp for hours. two to three hundred pitches per day every day.

then one day a pain here and now and then. soon, i couldn’t lift my arm past my shoulder. after finally seeing the orthopedic doc i finally got scoped. removing a calcium deposit and repairing my rotator at the same time. six months of painful rehab later and i was back to three bp tosses again.

i can recommend a good doc for you.

My only comment on the political scene on this blog is:

Our country is broke, for every dollar we spend we have to borrow 42 cents. Be it Democrat or Republican I want them to fix it, simple as that, we can not continue down this path. I want the responsibility to fall on every single person in this country to get us out of this mess. It’s funny how being responsible for ones self has fallen out of grace over the years.
