Prospects come of age
A couple of years ago, head coach Greg McMackin drew national attention when he offered future football scholarships to two eight-graders.
Reeve Koehler and Kamalei Correa will be entering their junior years at Saint Louis School. Both are key members of the Crusaders. Koehler, who is 6 feet 4 and 270 pounds, is the starting right tackle. Kamalei Correa, who is 6-4, is a starting defensive end.
They will be eligible to sign letters of intent beginning Feb. 6, 2013.
Contract-extension talks have been ongoing between UH and McMackin, who is signed through the 2012 season.
The Crusaders, meanwhile, should have a pass rush to match Punahou’s. Last year, defensive end Kalei Auelua often drew enough attention to open the way for Juda Parker. Auelua reportedly made an oral commitment to Washington, although he still has offers on the table from Hawaii, Colorado, UCLA and Boise State.
The new starting middle linebacker will be Colton Goeas, son of former Warrior and NFL player Leo Goeas. Colton Goeas, who will be a junior, attended a high school in Colorado last year.

Former UH offensive lineman Laupepa Letuli, who recently joined the AFL’s Spokane Shock, has an out clause in his contract should the NFL lockout end and he is offered an NFL free-agent contract.
Melila Purcell’s comeback is official with his signing, also with the Shock. A couple of years ago, he received a medical buyout from the Cleveland Browns in which he received medical care and a financial settlement. That buyout, though, did not prevent him from eventually signing with other teams.

Things to know about last week’s New Era Bowl in Japan (in which associate head coach Rich Miano, offensive assistant Inoke Funaki and six former Warriors led their team to a 24-20 victory):
• Former UH running back Nate Ilaoa is a “stud.” At least according to Miano. Ilaoa racked up about 250 all-purpose yards, starting with a 50-yard return of the opening kickoff. Miano said opponents were not used to seeing a “283-pound guy run like that.” To which, Iloao argued: “I don’t think I’m 280.”
• Safety Spencer Smith was injured during warmups and did not play. Defensive lineman Tuika Tufaga suffered a leg injury, but returned to play. “He’ll be limping for the next few weeks,” Miano said. And linebacker Blaze Soares suffered a shoulder injury. That forced Miano to summon … Ilaoa. “I played linebacker,” Ilaoa said. “I had like two and a half tackles. I got to see a little action.”
• The game was played in the Osaka Dome — “just a beautiful stadium,” Miano said — and far from the damage created by the earthquakes and tsunami. But there were 15 players on his team from areas affected by those disasters.
• The team stayed in Kobe for several deals, which meant only one thing. “I’ve eaten in some of the best steak houses, but there’s nothing like (a Kobe) steak,” Miano said. “I don’t know if it’s the way they massage it or treat it, but it’s the best.” Ilaoa said: “It was like eating meaty butter. You could slice right through it. It was like money for food.”
• Miano has narrowed Joe Paterno’s lead to 400 victories.

Forty-nine days away . . .
Foist!
Watch the ILH this year to get the best “endings”
I figured a Crusader parent would take the top spot.
Ahhh…the side benefit of bringing in the new OL Coach to Kalaepohaku
We can sense when someone is talking Saints! 😉
D1:
That’s a pretty good coaching staff.
I heard that Matt Wright’s name was tossed around for broadcasting opportunities. Apparently, he won’t be available for that because he’s coordinating the Crusaders’ defense.
btw, if Rolo has any inclination of adding a TE to the offense, he may wanna tag along on the visit up Waialae Ave.
I hear the real action is in the ILH’s summer passing leagues.
Yep, DC again. He’s a good one to keep an eye on…as is several others on that staff.
Right now, I think Darryl McBride would make a good tight end, especially since he was displaced as the elephant. (He’s now playing buck linebacker.)
d1:
I remember how Kevin Lempa used to gush about Wright.
Lempa thought he would make a good coach. Wright took very detailed notes, and asked pointed questions. It also helped that he shared an apartment with Chris Brown and Pisa Tinoisamoa.
I actually got a letter from the landlord saying how Wright, Brown and Tinoisamoa were model tenants. Never caused any trouble.
Pass league’s time may have come and gone. Different philosophies of approaching 7’s and how success in the slow summer heat translates to the “rushed” change come fall.
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
Are we close? Do we hear the Buffaloes coming?
Go Warriors!
d1:
It’s always good when I get on a fad that is about to die.
Macarena, anyone?
hopefully the family ties and mainland experience will steer these two prospects to Manoa also their speedy teammate and a DB from Cali who also has family ties to UH…Those 4 Would be a great start to that recruiting class
Haha! If those 3 asked you to write a letter of reference, what would you say? 😎
Annoddah Dave:
If we can get Ralphie on a plane, that would be awesome.
That’s the only lunch money I have left.
ST Were you able to find out if Bubba Poueu-Luna is still on the team?
Bryson:
He is on the team, according to teammates.
But Bubba and Dee Maggitt did not take summer session classes this year. (They went through the bridge classes last year.)
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
I think the only way Ralphie would come is on a family vacation with Mrs. and kids…or are they called calves?
Seriously though, I know that two of those guys are real stand-up people and have heard only good things about the third.
Annoddah Dave,
Call them whatever they want to be called!
49 days!
Eh, no BS! lol:
d1:
I remember I was in the UH athletic complex when Pisa was walking by outside.
He then did the Spider-Man.
He somehow managed to jump up, attach himself to the picture window for about a second and a half, then jumped down.
That was sort of amazing.

Have a terrific day erryboddy, I got a fence to paint….
d1:
See ya, Tom Sawyer.
Good morning folks! Nice start to a day in the clubhouse!
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
49 days and counting…should be long enough to paint the fence, unless it is a government job!
Go Warriors!
Or does seven Saturdays away seem shorter?
Another way to look at it is, training camp opens in 16 days.
Pisa is an amazing guy. I still remember him ballooning up to 250 lbs when he waited out a transfer year but playing at 210-215 in his last year after he went to a fruit and vegetable diet. But, it’s his mom, Ruta, who I’m in awe of! Incredible lady of faith.
just the thought of colorado buffaloes makes me want to ralphie.
Future Warriors they must!
Already Warriors they be!
Go Warriors!
Training camp awaits!
BG, fruits and veggies? What about PROTEIN to repair cells and muscles — esp for an athlete?
I is here boss!!
It is purely a coincidence I mention Kobe beef and Ralphie in back-to-back items.
and we all know what happened to kobe in colorado. shoulda just rode ralphie.
Stretch found a pretty good place to buy steak in San Jose.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
I actually prefer buffalo meat to beef… Lean and yummy… Jes sayin…
Happy birthday to our Georgia Tsai-ko merv!
Loved HPDH2 last night… No long lines on Kauai.
If all Hawaii teachers were given the opportunity and worked with the dedication and inspiration of Greg McMackin, no child would be left beind. Please give the man and his department GOOD CONTRACTS. Please!
Good Morning Gangeez!:)
Still can’t understand why Nate isnt playing somewhere. So much talent.
Upon Kalaipohaku’s rugged slopes.
I wonder how many of those Crusaders will end up as Warriors?
kamalei’s dad told me he is still growing….auwee. i asked him what is he eating, “poi-drinks”, he responded, “haku and kamalei were weaned on it (la’anui too)”…. apparently, you seperate poi from a larger portion of market-purchased poi (costco-sized) into quart-sized ziploc bags and freeze. at mealtime, one freeze-locked bag of poi is placed in an osterizer and blended with other desired fresh fruits and a liquid of choice for taste (acai berry juice is good). makes one 16 oz ++ suppa-duppa poi-whammie. poi drinks are awesome and easily digested within 15 minutes with no artificial flavoring or additives. straight to the blood.
jumba juice? not this maoli family!
Mack said this is a smart football team.
Most coaches say that, so you take it with a grain of salt.
But then when you listen to Richard Torres, Corey Paredes, Vaughn Meatoga, Kaniela Tuipulotu, Tank Hopkins, Darryl McBride, Austin Hansen, Sila Lefiti, Andrew Faaumu, etc., teaching the younger guys, well, this appears to be a really bright group.
UH should make a bet with Colorado.
If we win we get to kalua Ralphie.
If they win they get to kalua Vili.
#47 u owe me $25 for a new keyboard.
yep, football IQ counts more than the casual fan realize….it impacts all areas of training, mental awareness, game prep and field play. i would dare to add–leadership too. i know a dad who had to fly up to a mainland venue just to monitor his son’s summer training in his senior year….geeze, you would think, junior would know the drill after 8 years…..some are talented but….anyway, mac’s words are well-chosen and not to be taken for granted. smart counts.
Looks like Mana Sliva signed with Sacramento of the UFL
gg, I won’t speak for Pisa. You can contact him at the Chicago Bears and ask him.

kamalei will be bigger than haku, hopefully he can match laanui’s size. i hope we have a shot at him though. heard he won Most Outstanding DL at an Oregon camp.
Is it just me or does Aloha Stadium look like a pineapple now…Green,Brown and yellow…
BG, lol. Yeah, right!
Wessai Chaptah gathering at Nancy’s in Waipio for preseason pickins at 11:30. (Papajoe2, if you not chasing that li’l white ball around your back yard, stop in).
The usual suspects will be dare…and that includes some of our East End affliates. [We nevah invite Windward side Tsai-ko’s ’cause we know they’ll be trapped in Bay Fest traffic ALL day].
Bryson, I live just up the street from Aloha Stadium.
At least, it doesn’t look bland anymore.
Thanks for the news, Randy F
bingo! yep, kamalei won mvp at one of the two-summer camps hosted in eugene. moreover, the camp he attended was “stacked” w blue-chips and more meaningful. nice campus, but the ducks are mired in a quagmire of ncaa inquiries. dont sell hawaii short, for any local recruit, as long as we keep improving and remain competitive in our inaugural year in the mwc….a trip to aloha stadium on saturdays is still cheaper than a roundtrip to the mainland…..esp for parents with their heads barely above water in austere times.
Kahuku ranch in Ka’u been raising and slaughtering buffalo for decades! Hope the slaughter continues at Aloha stadium at the start of the season. A’ole tatunka.
BIK
Just called Mana.
He said he hasn’t signed with the UFL.
He’s still waiting for the end of the lockout in the hopes of receiving a free-agent deal.
Anybody know of a combine called “The Opening”?
I think a bunch of Punahou players attended it this past week. Supposedly, they received good ratings.
#59 Warriorsun hit da nail on the head! If we keep winning, we’ll keep landing some of the hometown talent — so long as Oregon is on probation and Washington experiences a big let down and gets their coach fired! 🙂
We just gotta win, that’s about it!

world cup womens soccer final– usa-japan
according to the seattle paper online edition usa is a heavy favorite.. game tomorrow morning 8am hst (?).
in head to head matches japans womens team hasnt beaten the USA womens team in 25 tries
and then it got me to thinking why the SA online sports didnt havent any coverage of the world cup final tomorrow – –oregon, LA, utah wash boise newspapers online sports had features on the world cup
so then i went out and got a print edition of the SA fearing the worst. i mean how bad would it be if a visitor from some other country, maybe japan purchased a SA with the intention of reading about the world cup and not finding any articles.
…also how bad would it be if i wasted a dollar to see or not to see, so i go and buy a newspaper anyway.
pent up fear was quickly put aside as i read the print edition of the sports section.
for the print edition of the SA had a 1/2page (almost) coverage of usa -japan final tomorrow.
the point im acknowledging is that there is definitley more to read in the print edition of the SA paper versus the online edition. it cost me a dollar to find out.
Haku’s mom work at UH, and Laanui has been helpful in Haku’s career. So there’s always a good shot. Haku is a productive player for the amount of plays he gets.
i think Kaumatule and Buckner attended the Opening. it was a Nike sponsored camp w NFL coaches and players assisting. no college coaches were allowed to attend, i believe.
Plain and simple, NATE ILAOA is one of the best pure FOOTBALL PLAYERS to ever wear da Warrior green. The fact that he played LB and was able to rack up all those yards on offense is no surprise to me. Nate always reminded me of a certain PURE FOOTBALL PLAYER From St Louis who never reached his full potential in college. Anyone remember Georgie Boy Ornellas? That kid was amazing.
BIK
We need to resolve the locked gate issue before someone sprains an ankle, or worse. The whole thing is so Herman Frazier-ish.
Poor Syracuse.
yeah, I enjoyed watching Nate Ilaoa play. He was so strong and athletic.
I also liked Nate Jackson, Jeff Ulbricht, and Leonard Peters.
Hawaii’s gain is Syracuse’s loss.
Letsgo..:
Thanks for the info.
Does Coach Mack include “instincts” as part of “being smart”? da feelin where da ball will be thrown or deciding between a running or passing play by studying what the QB does, how the OL sets up, movement by WRs, etc. jus dat feelin!!!
Studying, not just watching, tapes to secure tendencies – like teacher says, not review chapter 1, but STUDY chapter 1!!
A-House should learn to trust his instincts when shooting craps or deciding which machine to play – U know, when to hold and when to fold – he would save a lot of $$$$.
stephen, if you research the actual PT per player at DT, haku’s PT was as much as kaniela or vaughn. Defense rotates its players more than offense and usually plays more than 30 per game. several years ago, we had a non-stater at DE who made all-wac. starters at certain positions are not indicative of game impact and sometimes go to the player with seniority.
Mrs A-House says leave Ralphie alone. He would be miserable on the plane ride over and back.
Nice shot, ST. You should have seen her trying to take a picture of him running around the Colorado stadium!
Lava:
It won’t be a problem anymore because band camp has ended.
Now Ching Field is back in play.
But I think it’s on the radar for future scheduling.
The funny one was when a field-hockey team was setting up markers for a practice. A couple of the players approached them, and gingerly explained that the field-hockey group should move to the other side of the field. (The players prefer the ewa side because there’s empty space behind the end zone; the diamond head side has the pole-vault landing block.)
warriorsun:
Actually, I did check, and there were many games when Haku had far fewer plays.
la’anui is a dl coach at kalaepohaku and kamalei plays under him. haku played for the kalihi catholics.
But Haku’s tackles-per-play ratio is one of the best. He’s an impact guy
Zach Masch is a sudden-impact guy, too.
Haku actually was a starter entering training camp last year.
I like him. He’s starting to get that mean streak that’s necessary in a d-lineman.
will they move friel to DT or keep him at DE? is malepeai to OL permanent? he could probably be a good OG, but will be hard to beat out Makainai or Lefotu over the next 3 seasons.
I like it when olinemen have that mean streak too. Can’t really think of any in recent warrior memory. Sam Satele perhaps? Manuwai for sure.
BIK
stephen, numbers for the season overall?
i can rem hanohano making a huge pass block against nevada that killed a wolfpack drive in the second quarter that kept them frustrated. you mix your personnel. they all have different qualities. on our team, we are blessed with depth. that means more.
Kekoa-see you at Nancy’s–sj & myki
lgw, gotta wait until 2012 to see where shaw places makainai to anchor our ol. u r accurate in ur assesment–he would make a great OG. prolly great anywhere on the OL.
dont u think it’s a wonderful problem for shaw to have?
warriorsun:
You’re right about mixing it up. Great strategy.
McIlroy has a chance at the British Open. He’s starting the day even, but not the leader.
Tom Watson — only one right now to play below par?
Leaders haven’t gone yet.
It will be sad if McIlroy doesn’t win the British Open. After all, he’s British.
Maybe, he has a bad case of nerves?

Btw, got your WSB renewal letter. Good stuff available. It’s all good!
smart is in a different mental sub category from instinct. the later commonly referred to as a “sixth” sense.
take the strength of your arm. it is comprised of two different muscles that function as a whole but have seperate roles. ie, your biceps and triceps. one pulls, the other pushes. tris at best are two-thirds your arm size and biceps, the other one-third. if u r a body builder, when ur arms are developed in the desired proportion–they look beautiful and are called guns. ditto with football smarts and instinct. when they are combined in proportion, u r called a natural.
ST,
can’t wait for dem buffs…tanks for dat pic.
herman frazier was a bad trip. but so r uhad administrative bean-counters that have as much gray matter as a bucket-load of oysters. frazier is an easy pinyata to whack, but far removed from locked-gates in 2011.
Alas! No one came along…had to whitewash the fence myself!
But intermittent showers have given me a chance to sneak away to Nancy’s! 😀
ST,
U know if UH ever got transcripts from da-Force?
Happy Nancy’s! Have some for me too!

103 how much?
i cant see the fascination with ocean cruises so i can offer a different perspective.
just to be fair and balanced.
two years ago, i took a freebee trip to the nw polar cap.
it had been offered to me every year for an eternity.
finally, in a moment of serendipitous spirit, i accepted the invitation.
if you smoke , be prepared to go cold-turkey.
if you like to fish when boating, it is like being stuck in foreplay for 5-days.
if you like to gamble–vegas is cheaper.
if you want to see pele at night? short-drive from lyman to the kalapana zone.
i have ohana there.
most importantly, you are joined at-the-hip with your group.
besides everything i mentioned–the people in my entourage were regrettable companions.
it was like holding your breath for 120 hours…..which reminds me–in vegas–it’s easy to meet new people and switch hotels.
now, some in my family are different and have taken tours all around the world, including flying over to europe to catch the russian tour…..geez, such pain. oh, well, different strokes for different folks 🙂
#67 BIK,
I do remember George Ornellas and wondered why he disappeared after playing a season or so with UH. I remember he said that football wasn’t fun for him and he lost the desire or something like that. Still remember how there was a play where the football was thrown up for grabs towards the right side of the field and he raced across from the left side of the field to make the grab… I was in awe of how fast he ran across the field to snatch the ball from the air. Plus I remember how he used to never wear socks when he played cause he felt like running without them felt like he was barefoot and could run faster…
I was in high school same time he was and now that I look back at that Saint Louis team, man talk about and offense that was loaded… that year they won the state championship behind QB Darnell Arceneaux RB Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala WR George Ornellas and and Offensive Line anchored by 2 NFL stars in Olin Kreutz and Dominic Railola…sheesh…but I still member they almost lost to Kahuku in states cause Vai Notoa was killing them running the ball.
Regardless although his college career was up and down, he was probably the best high school wide receiver to come out of St. Louis and there have been some good ones…Jason Rivers, Micah Matsuzaki…
But yups Nate Ilaoa should be playing pro ball somewhere… I think he should still be on an NFL roster to tell you the truth… If he was still with the Eagles right now with Mike Vick… might as well just shut it down…
well, you have to realize that SteveM was in the Coast Guard for many years, so naturally, he loves being on the water.
Me? I am a landlubber, at heart.
Warriorsun, thanks for your perspective.
Interesting article about how there may not be any money coming after next year for the necessary repairs at Aloha Stadium.
http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/print-edition/2011/07/15/stadium-repair-fundings-future-matter.html?page=all
It is interesting to read that a 4-star WR dreamed of playing for UH when he was growing up. Too bad he committed to SMU over offers from Boston College, Colorado, UCLA, and Utah (among many others). That Robert Lewis he mentions is a 3-star slot receiver who had early offers from Oregon and Colorado. Both recruits are part of the huge recruiting pipeline that Adrian has built to Southen California, beating out the Pac-12 schools.
http://recruiting.scout.com/2/1086649.html
I do hope Reeve and Kamalei become future Warriors… Man they getting bigger and bigger too, nice… I could see Reeve being a mean Offensive Guard or if he can learn how to snap the ball a huge Center that could anchor the offensive line. Kamalei going be nasty…if he anything like his brothers La’anui and Haku, he’s gonna be killahz…
One thing that stood out to me in yesterday’s posts was the news that UH’s recruiting budget for football last season was $272,078. Kudos to JD for raising that budget and to Mack for pushing for that…we can all see the benefits that is showing on NLI day and on the field.
Have fun on your trip, gigi!
You too, SteveM! I’ll be doing the same thing at the same time with my wonderful family in the Caribbean!
Re: #105
warriorsun — you are a brave man. I wouldn’t do Polar cap even if I was armed. Hope to meet you someday at a Cattle Call or Tailgate,
Liz — yup, will miss each other in Nawiliwili again. Lucky you. Gives new meaning to “passing ship in the night”. 😆
LIZK #112
Should you be stopping in Jamaica, buy blue mountain coffee!
It was about $10-15 a pound when we were there. It was selling in Honolulu at that time for $40-$45!
Great stuff!
STEVEM – How much?
What gets me about Colorado and the expectation that we should win that game.
Our recruiting budget is a bit over quarter-mil. Their budget is (last I heard) close to 1.5 mil. and their athletic budget is three times ours!
What’s wrong with Kona coffee blend???
Love the stuff.
And it’s just $2-$3 at Kmart.
Roy’s or Lions — both delicious!
Wouldn’t it have been something if Colorado had played here when Colt was QB?
Talk about freaky, since UC expelled him.
#117 – I think Tommui was recommending to buy the coffee SHOULD she stop in Jamaica. Don’t think it’s available at Walmart
hi there admin. i like your new website. its really good. now you just need to concentrate on SEO. check out this program http://bit.ly/o3xtUT it works great! i hope you will succeed, best wish James Billings
Stretch, I know that. But if I were in Jamaica, I would think twice before buying $10-$15 coffee.
Hey, does Jamaica sell muumuus or sarongs? Now that’s something I would buy!
A Tsaiko invited me and hubby to play a round of golf with him in Waikoloa next week.
I wouldn’t think of embarrassing ourselves — especially after the way we played in LizK’s golf tournament. lol.
by code, a coffee blend has to have a minimum of 10% by volume of said coffee.
most kona blends just meet that minimum and then are incorporated with columbian or some other regular coffee beans.
the good stuff of 100% kona coffee starts at $20 lb if purchased on the the streets of kona. the good stuff run $30-40 lb.
the peaberry at least $40-60 lb. but, it is worth the taste.
Al, yeah, I realize Kona blends are 10% combined with coffees from other areas.
Still good stuff, though.
With coffee pests rampaging through the plants on the Big Island, you would expect Kona coffee to be even more expensive, but it isn’t.
A friend of mine who graduated from UH with a degree in music (he was a pianist) ended up as a Taster at Lion’s Coffee. He loved his job and was good at it.
I think he moved to the mainland recently.
Imagine tasting coffee for a living.
a tourist consultant once asked me what venues i thought most locals like to see on vacation, excluding las vegas. naturally, i responded with “venues with forested-mountains and snow”.
“nope”, he said as he his head turned side-to-side.
“locals like to vacation at venues with sand and beaches”.
strange but true.
my favorite is tahiti.
but dont forget to pack ziplock bags and beer.
there are no broken bottles in tahiti littering the ground–they are all redeemable.
but, there are a lot of shattered vehiicle windshields caused from free-falling coconuts.
doesnt matter, more folks travel by canoe than car…. now, that is the type of polynesian cruising i enjoy. open with salt spray in your face.
Ia Orana!
To coach Mack & coach Rolo,. If can, me want tate forcier to be a warrior. If no can, no worries. Neexxttt!!! GO WARRIORS!!!
Wsun, a friend and her husband spent 2 weeks in Tahiti back in 1988 — yeah, a long time ago.
She said disliked the experience because there was no night life. All she did during the day was read novels on the beach.
Booooring. But, maybe, it’s changed now.
They just did team intros at the shock game and both Mel and Pepa are suited up. I’m stoked!
gigi, lol!
i guess for some, tahiti offers kinship value.
true, tahitian infrasture is not world-class.
but i have stayed at a couple of resorts that cater to the unique, like lagoon accomodations in stilted-one-room hale on the water with glass floors to spot fish swimming under your flooring and room service that arrives in a canoe. your room is a virtual glass bottom view that is lit up at nite. spectacular.
but, if you want to stay in a glorious hotel with neon night life i can think of a dozen places in hawaii that fits that bill. suffice to say, ive never had problems with life after sundown in tahiti. lol.
i dont stay in the hotels anyway. not anymore. no way to experience tahiti. make friends, take cases of liquid joy (it is expensive there) and visit different families (leave the empty bottles with your host).
u gotta love eating ulu, upland taro and ocean food from a to z. using coconut milk to sauce your meals and dishes is a standard condiment. you have to learn to husk and scrape-da-coco-meat gurl. tahitians dont gut their fish before steaming–it keeps fresh longer and adds flavor– ono babe! chance-um with hubby–you only live once.
Forgot to mention former St.Louis wr Shaun Kauleinamoku is also a member of the Spokane Shock. He was with the team last year too
Ray Hisatake and Francis Maka both playing for San Jose tonight. So 4 former warriors playin tonight
speaking of former Warriors, nice to see Leonard Peters coaching football at Maui High School.
Former St. Louis Crusader and Colorado Buffalo Vaka Manapuna also coaching at Maui High.
Go 😯 !
Wsun,

gigi what time check in?
Promise, no fish.
i think check in is 3 pm Sunday, but we will try to get in earlier.
Any word on those Forcier transcripts?
From Garret
First of all, building a new stadium from start to finish will take anywhere from eight to ten years BUT the actual construction itself will take no longer than 2-1/2 years from the initial ground-breaking to snipping the ribbon to open the doors.
The rest of the time is spent in community discussions; identifying the location; if necessary, getting the lease transfer completed (see below); getting the planning/design money passed/contract issued/work done/reports made & accepted; money allocated; construction contracts issued; permits obtained; and construction work started which is the final phase.
The Abercrombie Administration not only has withheld construction repairs funding allocated by the 2010 Legislature which will expire at the end of 2011 but also has indicated that it will not release any money allocated during the 2011 Session as well except for core health & public safety matters.
As for a new stadium, that is why Abercrombie has said again and again it will be up to the next Governor to actually idenitfy the site and start the process described above.
Those of us who have been trying to bring the long-term economic development issues to the table have been frustrated with everyone “kicking the football(can)” down the road.
Once again, here is the process for the current site which needs to be done IF the decision is to replace the Stadium at that location – a proces which would reduce the length of time to less than five years.
FIRST – Get the lease transferred from the Navy to the State of Hawai`i
SECOND – Get Congress to remove the restrictions from the lease as part of the land exchange/transfer.
THIRD – Get the Legislature to identify the restrictions – if any – on the site.
FOURTH – Get Governor Whomever to sign the land use legislation.
FIFTH – See above for the balance of the process
As I have said again & again, the only way – short of going to court to force Abercrombie to release the funding – to get something done that we want – to repair & upgrade Aloha Stadium to support D-1A football program over the next 20 -25 years – is to ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE, AND ORGANIZE.
Yes, Na Koa is an important part of this process and obviously so is the UH Administration as well as the Department of Athletics, but building wide-spread community support is the only way for good things to happe.
Waiting for another governor to be elected in 2014 or 2018 will kill UH’s intercollegiate sports programs.
WDoc,
the only trouble is the multi-million dollar deficit that is staring Abercrombie in the face.
Where does he make the cuts? Even social programs affecting the neediest among our people are being cut to the bone.
So football is really low priority, sheer entertainment value only and easily deletable from the budget.
I never attend games at the stadium, anyway, so I really don’t care. The games could be held at Roosevelt High for that matter.
IWWTHM:
If there are any updates, I’m almost certain I’ll post them.
By the way, you know UH is currently recruiting other players, right?
But that’s for another blog item.
We’re off to dance rehearsal now. Call me if you need me.
I can just see ST dancing the macarena at the wedding reception.
#141
As I recall the report recommending stadium repairs came out in 2006. Like everything else if the recommendations were followed at that time instead of putting it off till we were in the worse recession since the 1930’s……………….
Wow, did everyone go to watch ST go thru his dance rehearsal.
Re: Harry Potter movie
Hubby said: “This is by far the best of the eight. The Imax 3D is spectacular. Well worth the money!! I hope to buy a set of eight movies in 3d when we get out 3d TV!!”
Gigi, what are you going to do when hubby’s is watching all 8 movies, or are you not going to allow him to buy the 3d TV.
ST, what is your email address? Got some pics to send to you of Pepa, Mel and Ray Hisatake from tonight’s Shock game. It was an incredible game with the shock winning on the last play of the game on a hail mary!
Pepa played a lot of the game and Mel Purcell started at nose and played well.
143==seem to recall
Laura, I told hubby not to bother buying all 8 Potter dvds because he still has not watched the Pirates of the Caribbean dvds he bought!!!
Waste money!
Gigi, he should treat you to a very nice dinner instead, while on the Big Island.
Gigi:
The deficit affects the Operating Budget which is financed by taxes and fees whereas the Capital Budget is financed by issuing bonds which are paid off over a 20 to 30 year period. In addition to selling the bonds, construction projects are frequently financed through federal funds as well.
Capital Budgets are used to construct buildings, do significant repairs such as install solar panels in state buildings, and build roads, bridges, and dams. These projects employ thousands of people directly over a year’s time and two to three times more indirectly as people spend their paychecks to buy clothing and put food on the table.
Without a 21st century stadium upgrades by the end of the decade, UH will not have a D-1 football team much longer. That would place the burden of financing the other 18 intercollegiate programs primarily on men’s basketball and the two volleyball programs, but we won’t have the financial clout generated by football revenues to play with The Big Boys and Girls in the three other money sports. Women’s soccer, baseball, softball will also suffer significanty.
Therefore, even if you don’t attend the games in person, if you consider yourself an Athletic Supporter, then you have to support the repairs, upgrades, and eventual replacement of Aloha Stadium sometime around 2040.
Over the past nine days, we’ve watched the first four Harry Potter movies and are waiting for the next two DVDs to arrive from the Library of Hawai`i and Netflix sometime next week.
As for the last DVD and the final flick, I am pretty sure that we won’t have any free time until the week of August 7th.
As we have seen in the past… as our stadium fall into disrepair, so does our football program… and as that falls in to disrepair, kiss the other programs goobye, too.
I voted for Ambercrombie, wish I could retract that vote, now.
Capital budget? So why have the funds not been released, then?
There must be a reason and a very good one at that.
As for Abercrombie, I feel sorry for the guy.
He inherited this deficit from the Republican administration; he did not create it himself.
He is doing his best handling this terrible situation.
We can say the same about Obama. He inherited the economy from the Republicans.
It will take years to undo what they did.
bin Laden is dead. Bring the troops home.
That alone will save zillions of dollars.
well, enough of this crap.
lets talk about more pleasant things.
Republicans want to tax the middle and low income people, and let the rich get richer by reducing their tax burden. The democrats want to put the tax burden on the rich, give a tax break to the middle and low income people. Hey, I agree, it is about time the rich start contributing to this country.
Gigi, hubby packed yet?
It makes no sense to spend $100 million in upgrades and wait until 2030 to start planning and building a new stadium. Upgrades won’t add 30 years life to the stadium and the bonds won’t even be paid off by 2040. Instead of supporting repairs and upgrades, we should be demanding a new stadium immediately, or anything that cuts your losses on that rust-bucket.
not completely. he’ll pack his aloha shirts at the last minute so they won’t get wrinkled.
Gigi, did you say that you packed all your things in just one carry-on bag?
yes, Laura
Gigi, I could never do that, always take 1 suitcase and a carry-on. How are you able to pack everything into one carry-on?
Gigi:
No governor in Hawai`i has the authority to veto an item in the budget legislation; however, s/he can get the same results by not releasing the funds if funded in the Operating Budget or by not authorizing the issuance of bonds in the Capital Budget.
Lingle did that to my climate change bill in 2009 which was in the Operating Budget. She vetoed the bill which was overridden by the Legislature in a Special Session; however, she refused to release the funds so that she got her way. The law expired last December 31
Abercrombie believes that one of the top three priorities of his administration is to create workforce/affordable housing. To do that, the state has to provide the land so that private developers can make a profit without have to jack up the prices.
The Aloha Stadium site could easily support around 7000 units in multi-family buildings anywhere from 10 to 30 stories high. To Abercrombie, that is a far worthier goal than accommodating the development of top-notch inter-collegiate sports program at UH on that particular site.
NOTE: Unlike the federal government, Hawai`i does not allow unfunded mandates. They just take up space in the statutes.
hey who won the fight?
I think that is a worthy goal from the governor’s standpoint.
However, this is a sports blog so naturally readers would be against it.
it is raining heavily in Halawa.
hope Hilo is clear tomorrow!!!
Jeff: I’m tracking the fight via Josh Pacheco on Twitter:

Laura, our trip will last only 5 nights.

i am bringing 4 bags of M&M Peanuts — 2 for hubby, 2 for me.
will munch on them during the drive to Waikoloa or just when we need a boost of energy.
Heineken,
I don’t know where that park is located.
I live up the hill from Aloha Stadium — Foster Village.
Gigi:
Ohh okay well Halawa park is that kind of big park below Camp Smith…..I hope you didn’t think I live in the housing 🙂
Halawa covers a large area.
The Stadium sits in it.
Foster Village is part of it, too, I would imagine.

*sigh* I regret not going to the fight tonight. I went to Viloria-Iribe two years ago. I was so busy this week, I didn’t even realize until yesterday that the fight was tonight. By then, I already had plans to take care of some other things.

A massive 7,000-unit residential development housing 20,000-odd people in the Aloha Stadium footprint would be insane. The concept reeks of the mainland urban “Projects” style housing developments of the 1960s that bred poverty, crime and social dysfunction. The solution to the need for more affordable housing is to upzone more land in the urban core to allow developers to build higher and denser but in diverse architectural styles and not all in one place: a quilt, not a straight-jacket. Areas like Mapunapuna and Kapalama are ripe for this kind of organic, patchwork community redevelopment and closer to employment centers. No Stalanist apartment blocks please!
#190,
I think you are confusing affordable housing for like public housing projects or tenement housing haha.
try go look at the “affordable” housing units that peter savio is selling at holomua and tell me if you think the “poverty stricken” could afford those.
the definition of what affordable housing is, is quite remarkable.
It CAN be different and geared towards middle class/lower middle class folks who make a decent living but can’t afford market rate housing. Not saying it will, but it can.
Now the congestion and traffic and overall infrastructure is a totally different issue and one which could very well be disastrous.
#178- Gigi, for someone who has lived here most of her life, you live in the Salt Lake area.
buffalo and poi…poi tastes better ..score 45-14..UHM..
Hi jm2357!
Re housing.
I think i like villages and neighborhoods. Especially where people can live, work and go to school and shopping without long commutes.
Need to photoshop hanging mucho pineapples over Ralphie.
Then forward it back to the land of Colorado.
Morning!
I remember having my first buffalo burger in Washington. Was ono! Healthy too.
Congrats Darren Clarke
Liz ~ Thought you should know. Lunch at Nancy’s was like a mini-reunion. We hardly see each other anymore, and some don’t post as often.
The A-Joe ohana & myki/sj…with Stretch & D-1 on the side was worth the price of admission!
Ralph gave me & BG a lesson on how to donate our dollars more effectively to the Wahine SB team. A-Joe had us roaring with laughter with his fund raising super stories. I think that’s what the staff at Nancy’s really likes about us…the loud, uninhibited laughter. It gives the place a resounding wake-up call!
I gave Stretch a new *Green* Golf ball to test drive at a golf tourney today. It will be available at pro shops around the islands next week. Duffer and ‘Da Kid’ will also receive a sleeve of these new bio-degradible Dixon golf balls before tee time today. Warning…Avoid the area around Coral Creek GC today!
A Little off topic mayhap, but anyhow – which template are you using? I really love the menu style.

Well…QB Tom Brady had become identified as No. one in Best 100 Gamers of this season at standard Football web site. I really like his experience very much. Late round draft testing, small young one at the combine, then finally given a way and surviving the desire of NFL prominence and a super model lover. I always show my pride by putting on football jersey with a number 12 and his name. There exists a retailer from where i found my excellent jerseys. Jeter’s fans could get mlb jerseys, Jordan’s follower can collect discount nba jerseys and Crosby’s supporters can order nhl jerseys wholesale there. What’s amazing is they provide you with youth nfl jerseys and women jerseys. I mailed 2 pieces as presents to my nephew. He likes it very much. I purchased my sports team a dozen of cheap nfl jerseys at around 20 dollars, quality is a whole lot better than expectation, big surprise. Also i desire to have my own name and number embroidered on NFL uniforms, I hope they are able to custom made jerseys before long.

The history of the automobile has always awed me. Today’s debate remains the same, which is better, American or foreign. I think there is little doubt that American has come out on top nowadays and in fact, Ford remains king. As the gus hogs start to stop being made you will see that the smaller hybrids of the US will become way more popular. There is so much money to be made on oil which is why the direction must change. Keep your hard earned paychecks in the US and buy a car from here.
