Nobriga update
Liloa Nobriga of Palo Verde High (Las Vegas) said he gave a verbal commitment to the UH coaches on Sunday. He then called teammates and his coaches to announce his decision. Nobriga, who moved to Las Vegas last year, said his mother, girlfriend and “my friends” all live in Hawai‘i. But after a meeting with his father tonight, he said he would like to take recruiting trips to other schools. “He wants me to take trips,” said Nobriga, who added, “I had a lot of fun on the (UH recruiting) trip. It was everything I imagined. The coaches treated me with great respect. We stayed in a beautiful hotel. I love the program. I grew up being a UH fan. I would love to go there. I would love to see myself as a Warrior at the end.”

One of our dear blog family members — Dr. Doc — underwent successful quadruple bypass surgery. If things go according to plan, he probably will remain in the hospital for another week. No visitors yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
* * *
• Keith AhSoon resumed practicing today. He worked as the left guard.
• It does not appear as if Victor Clore will be available to play against Utah State. He might be ready for the New Mexico State game the following week.
* * *
Even if it were a ploy to keep Utah State guessing, the announced “platoon” at quarterback gives the appearance that the Warriors still are a work in progress, which is a fitting portrayal.
Too often this season, it has been assumed that a quarterback — Inoke Funaki, Tyler Graunke and now Greg Alexander — will serve as savior.
That’s a lot of pressure placed on one player.
Alexander had a solid second half the past weekend — the best game by a WAC player, according to those who pick weekly awards. This week’s expectation should be for Alexander’s continued development, not whether he matches last week’s heroics. Results may vary when an opponent has a week to prepare for a specific quarterback.
The important thing is Alexander, like many of his teammates, is benefiting from more practice time. This week’s game is another step in the journey that is far from over.

Yet another unheralded player from the Nevada game is JoPierre Davis, who helped down two of Tim Grasso’s three punts that landed inside the 5. A week earlier, Davis could not get out of the way of a bouncing punt. This time, read the bounce perfectly. One of his plays was the difference between Nevada starting on its 1 rather than the 20.

hi
top 5!
Hi, Good Morning all.
Crazy Vog yeah? Feel like I still stay at my parents house in Puna.., esp with the rain. haha…love it though
So what? IF going start still or Greg get the green light? I think IF again.
It is great that Alexander will get the practice time. Hopefully that will help him get even more comfortable in the offense…though he was so good on Saturday that it will be hard to top that that level of play!
Consistency is the key for Alexander, as for any QB. Avoiding turnovers and adjusting to what the defenses do will be crucial.
One of the best things I thought that the coaches did was save Alexander for the second half. One big problem for UH was that the other team had adjusted their defenses at halftime and took away what UH wanted to do, and UH’s offense wasn’t able to counter-adjust. By not playing Alexander before halftime, Nevada had no preparation for him during halftime and wasn’t able to plan their D to attack him. Instead, they were probably adjusting their D at halftime to prevent Inoke’s scrambles…and Alexander was a big surprise to them.
The news came out later that it wasn’t in the game plan to save Alexander for the second half…but it sure worked out well that way!
BTW, from the last blog entry, here is a link to Tepa “Reopens” his recruitment..other tidbits about Hi players too. I tell ya, Norm chow is a sly guy…I guess he got the perfect HC too though. Maybe Malloe can give insight as to how the Weasel recruits??
I don’t care for that platoon system. Choose your guy and stick with him. Let him develop.
This article was posted near the end of yesterday’s blog. Bad news on the recruiting front. We talked yesterday about how the coaches were getting excellent recruits that other schools would try to steal away…thank you to XxFaithxX for posting the article.
Oops, XxFaithxX posted as I was re-posting the article he found.
Congratulations to Robbie Toma for getting an offer from UCLA! He doesn’t have an offer from UH yet, so this is not a case of him breaking a UH commit.
We need consistency from the O-line too. If Alexander is to be successful, the o-line needs to step up too.
Top 10?
Actually the platoon system does create problems for the opposition where the QBs are different.
What do you prepare for mostly – runs, spreads, options or pure passing?
If Hawaii finishes the remainder of the season with a multi- QB game, then so be it. Thought not the norm, if it works, then it works.
This was not in the original plan, but football is about adjustments, along with most sports.
When you come to that fork in the road, just take it.
No sweat it Garret. One thing that bothers me is that he is now saying he has offers from Colorado St, UCLA, Wash St. Oregon, and Oregon St.
So what they hell does that mean? UH not one of his “Top five”? Did Tony and Mack get him agree to a trip already? If not, they better get him here FAST…though, the state of the facilities here will NOT compare favorably to most if not all Pac-10 schools.
The luck of the drawed schedule continues for our Warriors.
This Saturday in Logan Utah will reach the 60’s with fair weather.
No snow, or bitter cold.
This one had my concern after the initial sched. was released.
XxFaithxX,
It sounds to me when he listed 5 other schools that he wouldn’t be taking a trip to UH. If he’s not planning to keep his commitment to UH, I’d rather he not take a free trip to Hawaii…UH has a limited recruiting budget and cannot afford to be a “backup school” or to be used by recruits who just want to visit Hawaii.
Cheyah!,
I agree that the OL will need to be consistent too. One problem on the OL is that so many guys have been hurt and the players have been shuffled to so many different positions. Hopefully, everyone will be healthy and they can set a starting unit, so that the unit can gel.
We talk a lot about how QBs and WRs need practice time for chemistry, but practice reps are even more important (in my opinion) for the OL because they need to all be in sync or the offense doesn’t work. Running or passing, if one person misses an assignment then the play can fail.
Alexander has an article from a paper that is local to him.
The stock market drop forced Pickens to donate another $63 mil to Oklahoma State so that they can continue with their facilities upgrade.
Tulsa is looking at getting a spot in the BCS. I expect either TCU or BYU will beat Utah, but they also need BSU to lose to make it…
20?
Season-ending injury to a WR results in RGM remaining on the active roster in the CFL.
top 25
Sorry HawaiianbodPride, I’m done with the article posting now but I posted too quickly for your top 20.
Agreed Garret. /sigh ….
good morning Tsaikos!
hope everyone keeps dry and have a vog-free day.
no worries Garret. Keep posting those informative articles.
continued prayers to DrDoc. Praying that your surgery was successful.
Back to recruiting.
So it seems that FUCLA and hawai`is own (NOT!!!) Norm Chow is now like OSU and that “Scab” Mike Riley. And yes, even the ever so lovable uncle Fester….Cav. Really starting not to like him…but I dunno, everyone else does…cause hes a “nice guy”..whatever…Heard he was IN Aloha stadium this last weekend at the game…UH should not sell tickets to RECRUITERS for other universities. Its like letting the fox into your hen house!!! I know, I know, hard to do that cause they can purchase tickets on line etc, but what if he is sitting near potential recruits???
Its like all they ever do is pillage the best and what do they and their University contribute to HI after that?
NADA.
Sorry for that, I blame the VOG!!
Garrett,
I agree with you on the chemistry and injuries of players. However, that can be said for all the other positions as well. Mouton came in as wr and did a decent job. Bain at PR, Lane as KR, and Alexander coming in the second half all stepped up all in one game. The starting O-line unit we have now have played a couple of games together and haven’t really stepped up IMO.
The tackles keep getting beat by the DE’s. Pass protection breaks down numerous times. Run blocking was horrible last week as well.
All the other units have improved each week. It’s now the O-lines turn to step up. If the O-line steps up, I guarantee we will see longer sustained drives and more scores from the offense.
Like they say, “If one goes down, the next man steps up!”
Go Warriors! I Believe!
Morning Tsaikos!
Continued prayers for Dr Doc & W-Doc.

Agree with you re: OL play. Gotta get improvement. It’s something I was noticing this past weekend while watching TTU demolish KU; their OL is really doing a good job. It’s the basis for success in every offensive system and a 4-wide is certainly no exception.
d1
I was watching that game and said the same thing too. Harrell had all the time in the world and KU couldn’t do anything about it.
Hawaii Bowl:
Please oh please let it be UCLA Vs. Hawai`i.
They have been ducking us in FB since like 1938-39 (Poi bowl)
Now since they have Chow and the Weasel….recruiting HI hard, etc. lets shove it in their face!
http://www.pacificathleticalliance.com/news.htm
For those of you who asked for a site with recruiting updates, above is a link to Doris Sullivan’s PIAA. This is mainly for all the top prospects in Hawaii, with a couple mainland kids thrown in. There are other UH prospects and commits who are NOT on this board, especially mainland ones, but it’s interesting to check out. UH has offered early this year, and has done a good job getting early commits from some top players. Don’t fret about the ones that get away – every program has those.

I don’t care for that platoon system. Choose your guy and stick with him. Let him develop
This is the Warrior’s “Year of Transition,” a top heavy year with 33 seniors on the roster. Next year is the year of rebuilding and reloading. Who the starting QB will be handing off to, and passing to also hasn’t really been established. For the QB position, the reads are difficult to master in a short season. As a result, we really only had two choices to begin with — Inoke and Graunke. Graunke missed all of the Fall practice. That left Inoke. The Warrior’s took a gamble with Alexander and Rausch, but Rausch injured his arm early, Alexander couldn’t make the reads and deal with D-1 speed, and Inoke showed promise.
The team rallied around Inoke. Inoke became the starter. AND they did exactly as you said. They stuck with him. BUT, whether it is because Inoke scrambles a lot or our O-line breaks down, he gets hit a lot and his performance degrades proportionately as as the game goes on. That’s when the Coaches need to put someone else in. That’s just football.
Is it better to put in a reserve who hasn’t taken snaps with the first team receivers and rbs? OR a backup QB with his own platoon of receivers?
Personally, at mid-season, I like the platoon system. It creates a lot of headaches for the opposition, especially since we have two divergent qb types. During the course of the season, all the QBs have had ample snaps to at least play fundamental RnS. The starting QB has had enough snaps so that a half load during the week should be more than enough to keep him at his best. At mid-season, giving the second QB his own platoon and the other half of the snaps can only make the team doubly dangerous. It also serves as a basis for friendly competition between the quarterbacks and receivers. It all works in the Warrior’s favor. If you continue this method of play, come the following season, you will have always have at least one platoon ready to start and never have to worry about “rebuild” years again.
oops.. missed on that blockquote from blackie… shucks…
The link attached has the work that Sportsbow does. Not like PIAA because he focuses ONLY on UH.
Garret-
RE: post #20. I just noticed that TCU and Utah play each other on a short week after road games. They both have night games on Saturday and then they play on Thursday. That’s gotta be tough!
Mav-
That’s good news about the weather in Logan. I saw the vegas line drop a bit and thought it might have been due to weather.
Good news regarding the weather for the Utah State game. The weather for the NMSU game shouldn’t be too bad either.

no lose sleep over any recruits. if they have a change of heart, so be it. would you want to go to war with someone who keeps looking at the opposite side, contemplating jumping ship???
i don’t think so.
we want men of character!!! commitment, loyalty, and of heart!
that’s what we want.
al,
Good feet and hips wouldn’t hurt either 😉
addahknowjoe,
You got mail.
QBs win and die with their O Lines and Receivers. Here, the receivers – for once – were finally holding on to the ball. Joe Montana could be throwing for Hawaii but if Hawaii’s mutt receivers are not holding on to the ball and if the O line is allowing seven sacks per game, Joe Montana would look like a mutt.
Unfortunately for Funaki, the receivers while Funaki played have played like mutts and the same thing goes for the O Line.
Surprisingly, when alexander went in, Hawaii’s mutt receivers started catching and holding on to the ball. It helps when the damn receivers start holding on to the ball and when the receivers run the correct routes.
The line could not block for shiznit, but at least the mutt receivers were finally holding on to the rock. If the receivers can hold on to the rock, any QB will look good. Alexander is the recipient of a large amount of luck. In this case, the luck is that the receivers held on to the ball.
Aloha kakou!
With all the focus on “Alexander the Great” (I was wondering if/when someone in the media would yield to the urge to use that obvious cliche, ST… 😉 ), I feel the need to give one last tribute to the Defense.
What they did was hold Nevada to two TD’s below their average, which was enough to provide the margin of victory.
So, Congrats to Solly and the rest of the D!! They came through again!!
GO WARRIORS!!
Tepa said he received the UH offer during the Jackrabbits’ pre-game meal the past Friday. Although the Warriors were his top choice, he decided to hold off until after he consulted with his parents.
“They thought Hawai’i was a good choice,” Tepa said. “We have a lot of family in Hawai’i.”
Tepa received an offer from Arizona, and strong interest from Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Colorado State and Minnesota.
But he said UH has “been my choice from the top. I think it’s a good opportunity for me.”
what a difference a day makes…………
oh, and which recruit was it that said he was a man of his word and once he did give his word there would be no turning back or something to that effect.
d1….yah, and speed, strength, instincts, etc.
al,
“he consulted with his parents”
substitute “parents” for “Mom”
heheheh
Alexander the Lucky is more like it, or Lucky Alexander, or Ambling Alexander, and his receiving corps – the Manoa Dumpling Gang.

how about an olineman, dlineman, and big bad running back from the real “deep south” to go along with joey?
we haven’t had a isaako sopo’aga in awhile.
Hey al,
Yeah, I won’t lose any sleep over a recruit…but I will over recruiters who are just here to take our best away!! nah nah JK…kana?
What recruit said that al? I forgot already…lol
so if you guys missed the info last night……..
next year’s las vegas package
will be out in a couple of two weeks from now. it will require a deposit if you want to hold a spot with full payment to follow.
so start planning. we would like to corral the tsaiko group in one area for tickets. there will be many options for all.
(and start being nice to the “boss”)
stay tuned………….
48 hours have passed…
JP Davis and the special teams were awesome on Saturday night and CJ Allen-Jones big hit on the first kick off set the tone for the special teams.
Coach Rolo showed several clips of the special teams in action on Saturday night at the Na Koa Luncheon and I must say that our STs were looking for blood while UNR’s STs were just looking to avoid getting their hands dirty.
Onward and upward to Utah State!!!
Also, my thoughts and prayers are with W-Doc and Dr. Doc during this difficult time.
xxfaithxx,
i swear i heard it and for the life of me, my limited brain cells just aren’t waking up this morning.
someone will recall and post it later.
i hope.
hey bulla,
now that’s twice in one morning. was glad to hear about the beast’s college experiences both on and off the field.
and how about those higgins’ boys!
“Alexander The Great”… Big words for a big guy that played a big game this past Saturday, of course he’ll be the first one to tell people to ease up on the nickname.
Funaki did well also leading us to two TD’s (one passing and one rushing for David Farmer).
As Funaki is healthy, this will be good two-punch combo for us.
cjs1,
Please be sure to keep us apprised of the latest movements in “the line”; you sound like one who would know!
FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY
UNT has a horrible graduation rate (lowest in the state of Texas from one report I saw), horrible record (0-8), and now 17% of their football players failed a drug test.
CJS1 ~ Don’t hold back!…go ahead, tell us how you really feel… and then tell us what you would do to correct it. That’s what we do on this blog. We welcome your opinion, but we also look for positive re-enforcement.
Stuff like:
1. More work with the JUGS machines for the receiver corps…Check.
2. More ‘after’ practice throws from QB to the primary receivers…Check.
3. Recruit better O-linemen…Working on it.
4. Issue a ‘lucky’ charm to Alexander to enhance his luck…Nah! J/k!
We have plenny season left for you to tell coach Mack what to do. I’ll save you a lot of trouble tho. I already know what his response would be. He said it at yesterday’s Press Conference. “When you get your own team, you can do whatever you want!”
Relax CJ, this is college football. They are still every mother’s son. Not Professional ball players yet. Give ’em a chance to grow and reach their full potential before you dump dirt on ’em.
For the young men making decisions on where to continue palying football, the lure of playing for a BCS team is a huge draw and may be the only reason that some Hawaii players will commit to a PAC 10 team. A sports analyst once wrote that if all the top Hawaii football players stayed home, Hawaii would be a top 25 team every year.
If Hawaii was in the PAC 10, it would be a totally different story. While Hawaii may not be attractive to the PAC 10 now, UH Manoa must improve its academics and athletics to draw interest as this is the only BCS conference West of the Rockies. Imagine, 4 of 6 BCS conference schools are East of the Mississippi.
Travel costs may be a huge factor, but with all the monies they have, travelling to Hawaii should be a little more expensive that travelling to Oregon or Washington. Help me out here – any one know cost of a RT from LA to Seattle? It’s not like the whole 100% of air fare is “chargable” to the bottom line. It’s the difference between the two. Also, the number of individuals in the travel party makes a huge difference ( ala Sugar Bowl 2008 for Hawaii ).
We need to get the airlines and hotel industry to assist in making their fares attractive for schools to really look had at the bottom line. I’m talking about UH President and Chancellor getting into the picture in discussing help to UH Manoa athletics. Even the Gov can put weight in favor of Hawaii. My take is would you rather have 50% full at $180 each or 100% at $100 each. Can discounts be taken as a “tax deduction”? Where are our tax experts?
Same can be said of prices at Aloha Stadium. I know that Jim D made some cuts, but maybe more can be made in these tough economic times to help fans attend more games and fill the stadium.
Jim D and Coach Mack are certainly doing their best to upgrade the lower campus, increase strength of schedule, and bring in better athletes to make UH attractive.
I wonder what makes the Arizona, Oregon, and Washington teams so attractive to the PAC 10? Anyone got a list of criteria for “adding” a team to their conference. I remember someone posted that academics is a huge factor including research facilities and grants. We need more gifts like Schilders (sp) on the academic side and Ching Foundation and Nolte family for athletics.
Sagarin’s computer rankings (which I think is used by the BCS) has the SEC as the *fourth* best conference in the country. The ACC and Big 10 are above the SEC?
Sagarin also doesn’t seem to like the non-BCS conferences.
The SEC West isn’t doing that well this year…maybe this has something to do with the SEC’s rank.
Hmm… kekoa… the trolls are active today, eh?
It always seems like the wins bring them out more than the losses.
This interviewer’s mistake was actually not supposed to have been broadcast.
Aloha Kakahiaka:
Again, mahalo for all your good wishes. Sorry I missed Kekoa yesterday afternoon, but between running around dealing with legal & financial matters and talking to worried family members on the mainland, I didn’t arrive back at Kaiser until around 4:30 pm. That was when it hit me hard what was going on as I’d not gotten more than an hour’s sleep since waking up on Sunday morning around 7 am. I couldn’t even stand up and walk after parking the car so I crawled in the back seat and fell asleep and didn’t wake up until around 5:45 pm.
DrDoc went into pre-op around midnight and, as I understand it, went into surgery around 6 am and is not expected to be back in his room until sometime mid-2-late afternoon. He’ll be in the hospital anywhere from seven to ten more days.
I just got through printing out an absentee ballot aopplication for him and have made arrangements to take it to the Clerk’s office in tomorrow morning even though the deadline is today under normal circumstances. If he can vote from his hospital bed, please take the time to vote next Tuesday or at one of the auxilliary locations from 8 am to 4 pm through this Saturday.
Midori7: Please cancel one of the omelets – no matter which one – and keep the second one plus the pancake order for me. I’ll bring along a storage container for the leftovers.
Question: Kick-off is scheduled for 9 am Hawai`i time. What time should folks arrive?
Would anyone like a volleyball ticket for Friday or Saturday night. DrDoc
will not be using his. Don’t have to sit with me if you want to buy additional tickets. There’s usually plenty of seats in the upper level. Let me know so I can leave it for you at the Will Call box office – e-mail address is swood at hokudotcom.
I asked this question the other day but no one responded: Because the K5 re-broadcast of the Nevada game ran over and even though I’d extended the time by 15 minutes, the DVD cut off with about 20 seconds left to play AFTER UH’s last touchdown. Did anyone record the game?
If so, could you either make another copy of the last couple of real-time minutes so that I can edit it onto my DVD or loan me your original so I can make a copy to do the editing if you don’t have two machines. Mahalo.
By the way, if you haven’t already done so, be sure to make a will, arrange for your spouse or SigOth to get access to your financial records & accounts, and arrange for advance directives concerning end-of-life treatment. We hadn’t done any of that despite celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this year.
Must run – will probably not be back on line until much later in the day. Again, mahalo for your good wishes & prayers.
A-House,
Academics are always a factor, but so are TV markets, travel costs, and facilities. It costs a LOT more to upgrade academic facilities and faculty than it cost to upgrade Athletic facilities, and that money has to come from somewhere…remember roofs are still leaking in Manoa when it rains.
For scheduling purposes, the Pac-10 likes to have 2 schools from an area. So, a basketball/volleyball/soccer/etc. team can play 2 road games with just one trip. Trouble is, UH has no compatible road partner. The Pac-10 has their travel set up nicely with USC/UCLA, Stanford/Cal, Arizona/ASU, Oregon/OSU, Washington/Wazzoo. That was why they apparently approached Texas/Texas A&M a long time ago, but the Texas state legislature threatened a huge cut in funding if they left the SWC for the Pac-10.
Nobody is dumping dirt. If you are going to call someone Alexander the Great, then you have to expect that not all people will agree with your conclusion.
All the QBs are good. They can all throw, and they can all run, or amble in the case of at least one. The remaining problems rest with the line and the receivers. D is doing fine. STs are improving.
As for coach, he better enjoy his $100,000 per month while it lasts. It likely will not last for long.
WassupDoc,
Best wishes to you and Dr. Doc.
CJS1,
Who’s gonna fire him.. you?
LOL…. what are you a comedian? LOL!!!
WassupDoc,
Please take care of yourself. I know it’s very hard to remember that while DrDoc is laid up but try anyway.
No worry about the last game, I can have a copy of the whole broadcast available for you at the next Tsaiko event you can attend.
Fingers Crossed!
WassupDoc,
I hope DrDoc is faring a little better today and gets better soon. Our thoughts are with you and DrDoc.
People who speak using acronyms will do it.
Wassup Doc-
I hope everything plays out for the best for DrDoc today. If you don’t mind me asking, what is his first name, so I can include him in my prayers? ((((((Here’s a hug for you.))))) 🙂
WassupDoc- Suggestion: Get some sleep and forget about civic tasks for awhile. When you sit with Dr. Doc, hold his hand in silence and think thoughts of love. Read to him from something funny and uplifting. Don’t talk to him about the usual business activities.
It’s time to be happy and heal.
CJS1- Suggestion: go fishing and troll in deeper waters offshore somewhere.
DPK,
Pray for Jim.
CJS1,
Well that eliminates me, I only type in acronyms.
CJS1,
You really are on the wrong board to start an anti-McMackin campaign. This is the board that started the McMackin for Coach campaign.
@LizKauai [Believer]
We have enough Taiwanese fishermen in our waters already.
Sorry, Tuna, didn’t mean to scare you.
Trolls can hide under bridges then 😉

***Lurker Encounter***
Just thought I’d share this.
Since last season me and my friends sit behind a family of four. We have made casual conversation and shared high-5s, boos, and complaints (about the officiating) without really knowing much about each other. This past Saturday I spoke with the dad (Josh) and we were talking about the tailgating situation in the inner circle lots. He mentioned how he’s had his season tickets since he was a kid and how they have to park at LCC and then shuttle over. This season his son has a game on Saturdays which prevents them from tailgating.
He had asked where do me and my friends tailgate and I mentioned that we do so near Richardson Field. I also asked him if he reads the online blogs, especially the HA. He looked at me funny and said “The Tsaikos”? Sure enough I was sitting behind a lurker for a while.
Both he and his wife are Tsaiko-material just from talking to them and anyone that is a true fan of the program will show once you talk to them.
I invited them to join us at our tailgate site when they can.
Aloha, Tsaikos!

LOL.. it cracks me up when people make the mistake of thinking that a BLOG or internet is a COUNTRY.. the USA is a “free” country… the INTERNET and BLOGS are NOT…and the server they sit on may not even be in the USA. Furthermore they are owned by people or entities, so they are private and subject to the rules and regulations of their owners.
Wassup Doc,,
Our thoughts and best wishes for Jim; a full and speedy recovery for Dr. Doc.
When I need to lift my spirits I play this song: “My Prayer” sung by Donnie McClurkin and Yolanda Adams…
Oops , the url is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XfJZg3osHI
One of the surprises I got when I visited Linfield was who is coaching their baseball team…Scott Brosius
I grabbed this from SportsHawaii.. post by Kahaluu Imua Warriors:
*Note: ‘Iuta Tepa’ is currently on the fence…and may be leaning towards Oregon.
This is what our Coaching staff have already started to build the future on… and there are a lot more to still come. it all looks incredibly promising.
ST, has the coaches ever thought of using both Funaki and Alexander at the same time. Where Funaki is aligned as a slot or WR. Imagine the possibilities of that and how the defense would react. I do think the platoon system creates a number of problems for the defense, take away one thing, it opens up the other thing. So you either take away the scramble and give up the pass or take away the pass and open up the scramble, running game.
I think because Alexander threw the ball on time, the receivers got to show their stuff. It’s a lot easier if a db isn’t draped across your back. I think the coaches did a hell of a job using what they have to get to where they are now, football is a game of adjustments, where personnel makes a difference.
Zatoichi,
Interesting.
Question: What you thought of the change in unis?
3 local boyz to ucla, and da warriors on espn against cincy (i guess as expected)
With all the laughing out loud some people do, I am amazed they are still able to express a somewhat cogent thought. This being said, I will say this about the asinine comments left by some people in this forum.
Spend some time thinking before you speak. This way, when you do speak, you will come across as a reasonably intelligent being. Otherwise, you come across sounding like the fool you really are in life.
Contrary to what ignorant fools (e.g., people who use acronyms like LOL, WTF, IMO, etc.) might believe, the truth of the matter is all of the laws that apply throughout the US also apply to servers on US soil, the owners of these servers no matter where they reside, and those who are using the internet while on US soil.
Before you make the mistake of entering into a debate about cyberspace with an opponent you do not know, it would make good sense for you to understand who your opponent is first and what his/her background and qualifications are before engaging your opponent in this sort of discussion. Otherwise, you will come off looking like the true fool that you are.
Better to keep your mouth shut and let people wonder about your intelligence than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
afternoon gang!
how’s everybody doing?
takoboy – and your point is….?
anyone know if the downtown hotels in vegas will carry da game against wazzu.
jm2375 don’t really have one, was one required bud
Howzit, Loa!
HI Loa!
okay here’s a point, didn’t think a school like ucla would ever have three local boy recruits in one class to commit to them, but that says a hell of a lot about the quality of talent here (as we already knew) but i guess you already knew that jm2375 since you’re such a wiseguy huh 🙂
Loa,
Wassup. Kinda dreary day.
Some around still seekin’ “StarStatus”
ST- get one candidate for smu… whatchu tink? perty close, eh?
Kazz (in case you lurking) – i finally went down to Pictures Plus the other day and they make those helmet display cases, koa base, plexi cover, nice
d1 – howzit, choke vog today, what no mo prize for the century post?
As far as Hawaii and the PAC-10 I don’t think it has anything to do with academics. Hawaii is a pretty decent school. As far as national rankings, etc I think it struggles with endowment and facilities more than actual “academics.” Some programs are very good.
That being said there is no rational reason for the PAC-10 to add Hawaii. Besides volleyball we bring very little to the athletic table that they don’t already have.
As far as recruiting goes… all is fair frankly. If a coach can make a case to a young athlete to attend that school, for whatever reason, good for that coach. I hope our coaches are just as effective. Hawaii has plenty of assets to compete with. Like it is the only Div 1 school located *in Hawaii.*
Corvallis… or Manoa?
Eugene… or Manoa?
Pullman… or… you have got to be kidding me.
We have to remember though that this is about the student athletes. As a Hawaii alum and fan I wish our teams the best. To be honest though if someone asked me if they should take a full ride to Stanford or a full ride to Hawaii I would say, “are you kidding?” I honestly think that Hawaii affords comparable educational opportunities to at least half of the rest of the PAC-10 though.
Anyway. I am looking forward to Utah State. Who would have thought that Fresno State’s kicker would pull off that kick after his disastrous outing against the Warriors?
kinda slow today. Just helping out the post count.
Hi Liz! How’s da weather on Kauai?
hiya LizK – thanks for the pics from saturday
i think that blue truck when cut me off on H2 before
Hey, gang! Hi, ST!
D1,
I like the change in uniforms. Funny is I am trying to get myself off of the “superstitious” bandwagon and I usually wear my home jersey with matching black UA shorts. For some reason I decided to buy green UA shorts and wore it with my home jersey on Saturday.
Sure enough I didn’t expect the team to wear the same color scheme.
I still like the all black with green trim look, but change is good and different. I wouldn’t be surprised if we bust out the home green and white top with the black pants this Saturday or if Coach Mack decides to switch the pants from now on and for special games go with the all black look. Kinda like how JJ originally intended it to be.
takoboy, I guess it’s getting easier to take for granted that talented players are coming out of the Hawaii schools now. Wasn’t too common 5 years ago. And with Coach Mack’s HI Coaches clinics and open com lines, the flow should increase even more as the young men start coming through the “Hawaii System” from Pop Warner through High School.
As for the Warriors, I hope we will attract more mainland talent too. I get a kick out of hearing Davone pining for beef stew from L&L! Spread the aloha!
takoboy – nope didn’t know that. I just one clueless wahine.
Loa,
Yeah I saw those helmet display cases Pictures Plus has. I was thinking of getting one soon for my Colt/UH helmet.
jm2375 – wasn’t me
jm2375- voggy, high clouds, some rain. Doppler shows a nice lightning squall on the windward side. Cool temps this morning sure felt good!
Loa- yup- watchout for da blue truck on the H2 😆
HiHo
Oh, also wanted to say that it is pretty unlikely we will see UCLA in the Hawaii Bowl. or any bowl for that matter. They would have to win three of the next four to be bowl eligible. Assuming they beat the Huskies and Arizona State they also have to be either Oregon State or USC. Not impossible, but a pretty tall order.
Hey- HI ESME!!! Are you having Gridiron withdrawals yet??? 😈
jm2375 – my bad for da overaggression. took ur comments a little too defensively. just nice to see our local boyz getting A LOT of recognition from big time schools on da left coast. maybe one day we’ll be seeing these big time recruits all fighting to play for our warriors…w/ coach mack at the helm, it’ll probably be sooner rather than later. go warriors one game at a time, but as fans we can get excited about a realistic shot at running the table and maybe having another double digit win total under our belts.
Nice to see all the familiar faces still here after my prolonged absence.
*waving to Liz, loa, Kazz, jm, et al*
I have missed everyone here and hope to be more involved again now that the Gridiron show is pau. Phew.
Was that really Esme? …or just a gust of wind?
Liz, like you wouldn’t believe. It was an exhilarating time. My first time back on stage in about 10 years. I’m hooked again, I think. 😀
CJS1 the problem is not with the people on this blog, the problem is that as a first post on the blog you give this
Then you turn around and call people “FOOLS and ASS’s” now what would you expect in return, a smile and a thank you.
You could have made the same point of your post without belittling anyone, coach’s, player’s or fans. I am sure if you had you would have not got the reaction you did, so assuming that you knew that, it appears that you wanted to get some kind of reaction from the people on the blog, hence the word TROLL.
OK, I’m doing a me and whooshing out to pick up the kids, but I’ll be back. 🙂
I guess that really was Esme!
Hiya Esme!
so hows the new site doing?
sheesh, she split already?
Esme,
In 30 days it will seem like you were just dreaming. In 45 … it will be a sleepwalk.. in 90, you will forget the monologues and dialogu8es you had except one. In 6 months, auditioning will seem all too scary again. Life of the part-time actor.
Takoboy,
I agree. I think Mac and this young crew of coaches he has assembled are going after high-end prospects with a gusto we haven’t seen in a long time.. or never at all. This bodes well for our Warrior Football Program.
CJS1
Are you doing ok, you seem kind of angry, like you said earlier just ignore the comments that bother you instead of responding in such negative ways…………..i don’t think it was only the wr’s making a difference this weekend , yeah all qbs can throw the ball but some can’t throw it as good as others, inoke can’t throw the deep ball while alexander might be able to, he doesn’t seem to go through his progressions well either……on the positive side, he is a good option at qb for running plays and short passes but as a run n shoot qb his potential is limited, just my opinion so TAKE IT EASY
Esme was a stripper?
Good day all.
Thoughts out to Dr. Doc.
takoboy:
try the California Hotel sports book area for Hawaii games.
What is a “mutt receiver”?
Homey.
A stripper bares all and calls it acting. An actor that doesn’t give it all always feels naked on the stage.
There are many ways to make friends and enemies – one just needs to chose which it will be and how to do it.
Oh gosh, who’s the mod on the “other board” he took the QB Wheel a little too seriously.
With that said, the dudes over at http://www.freakcrazy.com are now reporting that the wheel is going to make the trip!
Thanks Colt!
Update on Dr. Doc up top.
mih – Well when she wrote that it was her first time back on stage in 10 years only one thing came to mind. ROCK ZA…
That’s good news about DrDoc surgery. I wish him a speedy recovery.
FYI…Toma comitted to UCLA…..Da Weasel and Chow going hard for Manti…
Stephen,
Thanks for the updates.
Hang in there DrDoc! 🙂
Stephen,
Any indication of how Mack will set his travel roster with regard to injured players? Is it indeed a possibility that some will fly up to Las Cruces separately?
Mahalo, ST!
DR DOC- IMUA!!!
Praying for your complete recovery!
Stephen,
re: your scoops on DrDoc
Was the same nurse on duty?
take care doc family!
Good news about AhSoon 🙂
Just a note about our receivers last Saturday- considering the rain and field conditions and the color of the ball-handlers’ hands from wet footballs, they did perty dang good, I’d say!
Hi Esme! You ready for one late night supa soaker fight in da playhouse? Homey’s poodles really need a bath!
Jason & Stretch – engineers need partial diff eqns? NOT (at least for civil engineers)! I remember when I took Calculus during HS and asked my dad for help. He couldn’t remember how. Don’t think hubby has used calc on the job either.
Great news about DrDoc! Rest up and get well soon.
Garret,
I wonder who are the most financially successful UH alumni around today.
any t-bonne pickens out there in UH alumni land. nice to see colt brennan’s name on the scoreboard saturday nite, the nakoa booster list i think it was. hopefully when our guyz start getting their second contracts, we’ll see more names or maybe they are a lot of silent donors our there
great news about ahsoon…
DR. DOC
That’s wonderful news to hear. Now just gotta rest up.
Our prayers and thoughts are still with you!
great news Dr Doc….
jm.. partial differential equations?? what’s that?? and I only use a calculator when the numbers go over 10 since I run out of fingers
Stretch – so how come Francis Maka taking all that high level math stuff if he gonna lower himself to be an engineer? j/k 😀
A note about OL…one of the guys blocking very consistently this season is Lafu Tuioti-Mariner. How come nobody mentions him? Everybody wants to recruit these taller OL guys, but in reality, the good tall guys will also be recruited by Pac-10 and other large conference schools, so we lose a lot of them. The tall guys with ‘potential’ but not a lot of skill yet, we get. Or sometimes, we get lucky cause a kid just loves his home team. The shorter guys that are good players have to walk on and prove themselves. That pretty much goes for most of the positions as well.
So we need to coach them up. I think Coach Smith, ala the school of Cav, will get that done, but not in one season. But guys like my son (and Lafu), who are shorter, and work very hard on technique, strength, quickness, reads, etc etc. are very effective OL at the college level. Low pads win. They may never play in the pros, but they can be good for UH. The Boise state coach once told my son that they won the Fiesta Bowl w a Center who was 2 – 3 inches shorter than my son (so make that 5’9″). This always comes to mind when I hear fans keep saying we need to recruit bigger OL. Big doesn’t always mean better.
Good points, Nalani!
And nothing like being a team mom to know da scoops!
And speaking of moms earlier (influencing sons to take the mainland offers)- thanks for supporting UH and getting the first of your kids onto the team!!!
Nalani — thank you again for the CD. Peaches was very happy and choose an autographed one for her collection!
POST #160 – great post, and lafu has been doing a great job. the thing w/ lineman, especially guards is sometimes they get the short end of the stick, unless people are actually making a point to watch the trenches, then the only time they get noticed is when they do something bad (like referees in football or umpires in baseball)
Hey Liz – thx for the hookup w Duffer/Whitey. It was fun.
SteveM – you’re very welcome.
Takoboy you’re right about only getting noticed when they screw up. So let’s make a point to call out the good plays too. Some of these players read the blogs and it would be nice to balance the negs with some positives.
We’re glad to see Keith back. Good player and strong leader.
Sorry – gotta run away for a while. Taking my new puppies to the vet.
Nalani,
Good points.
btw, you hear anything about how Tui is recovering?
NALANI:
Walter Nozoe couldn’t be more than 5’5″ or 5’6″ but he was first string at UH playing both ways. When we played Nebraska 6-0, the people on the OL and DL for Nebraska were at least 6’0″ and 50 or so pounds heavier.
Tackles on the O-Line gets all the attention because they are the easiest to spot and when they make a mistake the QB takes a beating or the running back is stuffed behind the line of scrimmage.
The center and guards get little attention unless you concentrate on their play with binoculars or it becomes obvious when the DT and/or NG goes straight in and dumps the QB or RB in the backfield.
I agree with Nalani that Lafu and done a really good job except for a handful of miscues. The OT, on the other hand, ………. what can I say?
Just ask Funaki how he feels.
Dr Doc:
Speedy recovery and hope to see you at the Cincy tailgate; only if your Doc says its OK.
Wassup Doc – you take care of yourself first and then Dr Doc.
One thing that impressed me with the Boise St and Nevada defense was how their players, especially the front 7, stayed with their assignment causing a lot a problems for the Warrior running attack.
Sure would like to see a swing pass to LWJ and using his speed to get to the outside and leave DBs in his wake. He operates best in an “open” area. Contre on running between the tackles. How about a “fake” hand off and then the swing pass to him.
too funny!
Contrary to what ignorant fools (e.g., people who use acronyms like LOL, WTF, IMO, etc.)
say isn’t CJS1 an acronym???
Get well soon, Dr. Doc.
Wasn’t it Brent Rausch who said it when SMU went after him after he committed to the Warriors?
nalani…..
i have touted the steady play of lafu tuioti-mariner in the past couple of weeks. sadly, only you up to now, seems to agree or care.
hmmmm.
ronnie could be on to something. but, i thought it was one of the poly boys.
Ronnie: dats da one.
Nalani
Will do. great job by the entire o-line. we gave up some sacks last game but i saw a lot of improvment. nevada had some really athletic d-ends so some sacks were expected. loved the whole created by the interior and especially estes on farmer’s run. i think my fat tail could’ve even made it thru there. no letdown in logan or las cruces. let’s keep improving to final exam time against da bearcats at theend of the year.
so, if ah soon is moving back to left guard, is he ready?
if so, then to which side does pepa play tackle this week???? he has done a good job there. i think he just needs some reps on a consistent basis.
Dr Doc,
A speedy recovery to you, blessings and prayers to you and your bride.
Dr. Doc – our prayers for your speedy recovery.
My mom and my grandma had quadruple bypass surgeries. My grandma healed so quickly, she drove herself to her follow up visit two weeks after surgery…. Regardless of how long it takes, we thank God that you will will fully recover.
al:
didn’t Dovonte Taylor tell Oregon St that he sticks to his word?
I’ll take the opportunity of this lull to pose a question.
Is this indicative of fan dissatisfaction with the HC?
Prayers and best wishes for Dr. Doc and Wassupdoc. Take care of yourselves…football and civic duties and events can wait…you can’t attend events or perform duties if you’re not arround…take care…and God bless.
Good afternoon Tsaikos….busy, busy, busy….just popping in and doing an Esme…..
(J)J.
😳 Gomen. Didn’t mean to step on toes.
heheheh
ahouse…..not sure about him.
but, maybe it was jovonte taylor?
(sorry, ahouse, i couldn’t resist)
seriously, i am not sure who it was. it could have been many when you come to think of it.
i was hoping the master would enlighten us since he has the knowledge.
dr. jim doc,
keep on believing and trusting.
we’ll keep on praying.
d1…. You talkin’ to me??? You talkin’ to ME!!! LOL
D1,
Speaking of “lulls” there has been one with the fans and the Wahine Basketball program.
Of course the current HC’s image isn’t helping matters much.
D1,
Sad but it is a real contrast to those Nani Cocket and BJ Itoman days.. Those were games that had the house rocking. They played so hard and yet you could see the joy and exhiliration in their play.
Howzit Gang,
DrDoc – God Bless You, Get Well Soon!
Nalani…Rob25…Ronnie…them Kamehameha Wahine sure know their football.
d1 – Wahine basketball just can’t seem to draw the interest and the HC doesn’t help the cause. I know it was just an exhibition game but the Wahine should have blown BYU-Hawaii out of the gym.
Keith AhSoon healthy enough to play? Hope so although he may be a little rusty he is our best interior lineman I think. I feel bad for him being his Senior year, will he be able to apply for a medical exemption to play another season?
200!
somebody mentioned the uniforms on saturday.
having always been a uniform guy……i didn’t like the combination.
i like the black on black with the green overtones mo betta. looks more menacing i think. if it were all green as coach says there could be a game, we do have a green out day don’t we???
anyway, mack said he was a bit superstitious so he just might stick to the green pants at home.
hmmmmm. black pants on the road??? perhaps.
PB – I don’t think he can get a ME.
al – I thought you are color blind???
pboy….if he plays this weekend he can’t apply for it. how many games did he play this year?? two?
takoboy – sorry I didn’t know what you were referring to until I saw the “Breaking News” section. my apologies. 😳
al – UF, Weber St., part of OSU…
jm2375 – How does your foot taste? 😆
A-House and al,
So I got some encouraging news about my RB prospect today from the Coach. Anyway, I emailed the Recruiting Coordinator Coach and got a response today. He said that he is being heavily recruited but has not ruled out any opportunities and is keeping his options open. He is a standout two-sport athlete and is being recruited for baseball as well. Anyway, the list of more notable schools on his hot list are: Georgia Tech, Colorado, New Mexico, SDSU, UNLV, UCLA, Washington State, Fresno State, and Arizona State. There are others who have offered, almost 40 total. The Coach said he has sent out a highlight tape and information to Coach Tony Tuioti today, so we’ll see what happens. al, I was wondering if your contact can check if Coach Tuioti got the goods on my boy. I garrans he and the coaches will be very impressed and I hope they offer him soon! Anyway, I’m praying for this kid so we’ll see. I will try and make it to his games to talk with the Coach, his dad, and himself and fill you in when I get the scoops.
RE: Color Blind.
I didn’t realize da boys had green pants on until the end of the 1st quarter.
This vog is making me sleepy.
About Utah St., did the FSU game pump them up or deflate them?
wassup doc, good to hear that your surgery went well. here’s wishing you a speedy recovery and know laughter is good for your health, but not right now. hahahaaaaaahhhh!!! my brother had same kind surgery and he tells me not to make him laugh and when he does, he has to hug his “heart pillow”. get well soon.
Ahh, that’s too bad if he no can get the medical exemption. Hopefully after the season pau he can got try out at Pro-Day or something, he get chance I think to play professionally somewhere.
Congratulations to our HI fb players who recently committed to the school of their choice. It will be a tremendous financial relief for those families and hopefully that their sons get a good education. Where ever they play, they will always be part of HI, so best wishes and may your futures be as bright as the sunshine.
al, another mother/father of puppies (nalani). don’t know what kind of puppies she has, but she can call you for “fatherly” advice of the do’s and don’ts. hahahaaaaaa.
That’s a far drive to the tv-gate this Saturday.
Nice seeing jojo again. Oh, and joje.
al,
I asked Zatoichi for his thoughts on the uni color combo on Sat.
heheheh
Listening to ESPN 1420, Kanani Herring is requesting to be known as Kanani Danielson.
Great to hear about Dr. Doc! I hope that he gets a lot of rest and recovers fully soon.
al, another mother/father of puppies (nalani). don’t know what kind of puppies she has, but she can call you for “fatherly” advice of the do’s and don’ts. hahahaaaaaa. coming tomorrow to maui???
PB, thanks for all your work and getting the necessary info to UH. How’s things in Poway??
Oh I missed out on getting Nalani’s CD this past weekend? Bummers! That trip cost me a UH home game and Na Leo CD! At least the Cowboy win and spending time with Frank made it worth it…priceless.
Did anyone happen to get one for me?
OK, I’ll just wait and buy one then I can send to Frank.
Great afternoon all!
Interesting posts by a few. Best post so far is by al at 172
“. . . isn’t CJS1 an acronym???”
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Good news for Dr. Doc! Yahoo!!!
Please, WDoc, back off on one or two of your civic activities. You need time for yourself and those activities will still be there in another month or two! If you are not healthy (evidenced by you “crawling to the back seat” and falling asleep) how will you be able to take care of Dr. Doc?
The pleasure was all ours! 🙂
Even learned a few things about football, from a girl even!
Bringing this over from the previous blog. I know it’s a ways away, and there are concerns about what the fuel price maybe come September. We should know prices for packages soon!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Dr. Doc! You take it easy and make sure that you are fully healed!
Hey Rob25, I got a CD and I didn’t even go to the tailgate! 🙂
Hope you had a wonderful time with hubby and the game.
re: Na Leo CD.
Uhhh, does being there in spirit count? Were those of us not present provided the CD in spirit? HA!
Maybe next summer I will have the opportunity to meet Nalani and listen to a live performance. I am so darn jealous and envious of those of you who get to enjoy the TGates and the commraderie.
All I got was a photo a few weeks ago from Kekoa of Nalani singing at a TGate. Definitely not live and definitely not Memorex. HA!
whitey,
Howzit, I actually little bit more up north from Poway. Anyway, besides the hot than cold weather and occasional fire flaring up it’s all good in these parts. Got some really good football players in the SoCal area this year and I’ve been keeping an eye on a few Juniors that have been impressing so far this football season. Anyway, I trying to work a lil magic on this RB recruit up here. The kid is awesome and he’ll be known once he hits the college scene for sure.
So when AhSoon returns, who will be the odd man out? Kia? Letuli?
Wow Duffer…you are one lucky man…I know that you were graced with her wonderful presence!
wafan:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4934750993144004313&hl=en
Thanks to Liz, at least it is more than a photo!
Duffer
We had a great time! Too bad it was too short, but lucky to get out of Texas before the cold moved in last night. Frank said it is so cold and they packed all their warm stuff to have sent to Kuwait.
The game was great and I am so glad that I was able to be there in person to see them win…and during the last season of football at Texas Stadium! The seats were great and we had the best time there. Would love to see them again, but promised Frank that the next time we would go see the Raiders…ugh!
D1 — There are definitely a few older fans who are staying away because they’re not happy with the state or direction of the team (I know this because they write to me every time I have a Wahine article published), and some are specifically unhappy with the head coach, for various reasons. But I think the prevailing feeling is apathy. Women’s basketball simply doesn’t attract a lot of fans in Hawaii. Except for a few stretches in Goo’s best years, attendance has always been relatively poor. Plus, as we’ve seen with men’s basketball, men’s volleyball, etc., if you stop winning, fans stop coming.
Last night’s game attendance was especially embarrassing, but I think you can attribute some of that to a lack of publicity and the fact that it was an exhibition game against a Div. II school. Riley Wallace used to say that he didn’t schedule games against the local Div. II schools because people didn’t show up to watch.
Still, this year’s team has the potential to be much better than last year’s. Whatever people think of the coach, it would be nice if fans turned out to support the players, including local products like Keisha (who apparently isn’t talking to me anymore), Leilani, Catherine, etc.
Rob,
Very lucky! Can’t wait to go back to Tiffanys and see what kind of service I get!
They tried to confiscate my poke, imagine that.
One more hour of free tacos from Taco Bell today, assuming that Taco Bell is doing it in Hawaii today. The kids got free tacos too but they don’t eat any, so I had 4 free tacos to myself…
Hi all..
Oh well… I missed out on the CD too! got there to late!
Mike,
I went to a few Wahine basketball games when Vince Goo was coaching where they had the Wahine game before the men’s game. Even when it was free the turnout wasn’t that great. And that was before the current coach turned off some fans…
No worries Tsaikos. I will take care of the ones who didn’t get CDs. It actually was supposed to be a reward for the Tsaikos who came to the La Tech tailgate. I said if we won, I’d bring free CDs next time. So Rob25, I’m pretty sure you were there. JaM – I got you too. Anybody else?
My puppies are called JUGS, Jack Russell/Pugs. Two boys. Very cute. Born 8/8/08, so my pake husband thought that was an especially lucky omen and we should buy them both. I didn’t have to be convinced very hard. They will be good luck and good guard dogs for our new house.
LizKauai, do you know how to paste a picture of them here? If so, can you grab it from my FaceBook? You know, the one of them sleeping on top each other. Too cute.
Now that the Puppies are back from the Vet and the “Free” visit they give you when you buy the puppies actually cost me $170 (medication, microchips, etc), I can concentrate on my next endeavor tonight – Pono’s BDay. My wonderful 15 yr old son wants to go eat chinese food at his favorite place Maile Restaurant in Mililani. So we’ll make the trek out there tonight to treat him. He deserves it. Terrific, loving boy.
Eh Duffer (your new tag name is funny!)…..yeah, that waitress better be super nice to you next time. The nerve about the Poke. Local style, gotta cut us some slack. Make the customers happy. They come back over and over.
D1 – if I hear anything about Tui’s recovery I’ll let you know. We’re wishing him the best. Not only you miss football, but you miss school too. That’s not easy with all the stuff these boys have piled on their plates. God heal him, and the other boys who’ve been sidelined this year.
Mike & Garret
What would get the fans to attend? Better scheduling? I thought when LaTech joined the WAC, they would elevate the womwen’s program, but evidently not.
Better recruiting of local players? Nani Cockett drew over 6,000 fans at her last home game.
Happy B-Day to Pono….
Hey Nalani, does being at the La Tech game in spirit count…I was stuck in Tampa for work and couldn’t make the game…but I was cheering on the team in my hotel as I tried to catch the scores on ESPN at 1:00 a.m…. 🙂
Okay gang, heading to CTC soon…talk laters…
Ref #225 – I’ll go support them. Maybe we do a Tsaiko night and we all go, make signs. Make them feel special. Anybody else in?
Thanks much!
duffer…
I think women’s basketball in general is not a big draw (except for the elite college programs like Tenessee). I mean, the WNBA is even hurting right now with low attendance and there has been talk of disbanding the league…although I’m not sure that is going to happen anytime soon as the NBA has a lot invested in that league….
Okay, for real, gotta go now…..
Happy Birthday Pono!
Sports Animals Interview with Associate HC Rich Miano.
CH asks Miano about his more active role on the sidelines.
Coach Miano says that he needs to toss signals to the defense when Coach Mack is making the calls. Miano also jokes that he also needs to keep Mack off the field as Coach Mack is just so emotional.
On the Fonoti defensive TD:
Coach Miano says that it was a product of some of the defensive drills they practice everyday. The defensive “scoop” drill is something Coach Mack implemented since he came to UH last year. They also practice the drill in solo or with other players around.
On turnovers:
Coach Miano talks about four different “circuits” they use to practice getting turnovers and Cal Lee, Coach Lumpkin and Miano himself spread out the duties in teaching the defense several take away drills.
On Mouton:
Coach Miano doesn’t think it will take away much from the defense as there is enough depth to compensate when Mouton isn’t there as they do not want to “over-use” him.
On Utah State’s QB:
Coach Miano thinks he has more “vision” than Kaepernick, but not as much as the athlete Kaepernick is.
On Joshua Leonard’s injury:
Coach Miano says that he’s fine and will be ready.
Miano’s overall grade on the team:
“C level”. Coach Miano says that two goals remain in graduating the players and making a bowl game and the process to get there deserves an “A”.
On Greg Alexander being different at practice this week than last week:
Coach Miano talks about his pre-season expectations coming out of JC and believes that there is no other difficult position in all of sports to come into than QB. Miano acknowledges the difficulty of Alexander having to start in Florida and that it is not unusual for a QB to experience that level of frustration only for him to come back later and play to his potential or show what his potential can be.
On Kaepernick:
Coach Miano says that the adjustments made to cover Kaepernick depends on what UH was doing. Miano said that there was a lot of coaching being done as the game was going on and a lot of scrambling to correct errors after every exploitation.
Mike, what did you do? 😆
Sure JJ. I got you one too…..
Wahine Basketball
Perhaps they should start reaching out to all girl schools first. My friend worked with Tim Sheppard and La Peitra. My friend was the head coach there for a bit.
There is a market out there for Wahine Basketball amongst those that already attend, perhaps they should reach out to them to draw them in.
Maybe if they offer a discount games for all girl schools, this could help in “breeding” fans for the future.
Excuse me,
Post #242.
Tim ***Shepherd*** not “Sheppard”.
nalani, that’s a good one, JUGS. you lucky, now instead of having active boys, you going have 2 JUGS who not only get speed, but are very alert. my friend has a jack cross and he lets her sleep with him because she catches and kills the centipede and scorpions that get into the bedroom and house. CENTPEDES!!!!!!!! Thanks for joining us and hope to see the rest of your ohana the next time on Maui.
p.s. no forget me with the cd. hahahaaaaaahhhhh!!
nalani….okay, i caught it. others had experienced the “whoosh!”.
jack russell/pugs a.k.a. jugs as “guard dogs”. yah, right.
at least tho we have being dog lovers (3 dog night in palolo) in commonality and by coincidence we have a son named pono, too. but, ours though is a 5 1/2 old black lab.
whitey, i’ll be running in to no ka oi isle tomw. maybe get time for lunch.
Oh yeah! How can I forget. Gotta save one CD for Whitey.
Eh, little bit of trivia, but I got to play basketball w Nani Cockett about 4 years ago in a celebrity tournament for Palama Settlement. Bro Nolan runs that thing and is a friend of ours. I had Amy Gilliom on my team too and Julian Senselly (sp?) from UH. Me and Amy just kept running up and down the court and nobody was passing to us. I felt ridiculous. Julian and the other UH guy were dunking and scoring like crazy. So I called for the ball and finally got it, but he called for it right back and I was nervous so I gave it back. Missed my big opportunity to drain one in front of the fans (ha! yeah right!!!)….. So that’s about as close as I’ll ever come to being a big time baller.
Al – you dissing my JUGS? Just wait. They only 10 pounds right now, but when they are full grown, I goin’ sick them on your ankles. Show you who’s the boss.
Good Evening Tsaikos!!
No can make it to the Call the Coach tonight. I am sure that myki will drink my share of $1 Heine’s.
Tommui – loved your story on Walter Nozoe. What years did he play? What was his number? Tell me more.
Happy Birthday Pono! Have a great dinner Chinese food. Mmmm.
Nalani – where did you purchase the puppies? i’ve been looking for one.
btw, good news – Pastor Wayne is back home.
re cd – i was schedulde to be at the LA Tech tailgate/game, but fell ill the night before.
Hawnbod – got the JUGS at The Pet Spot, Ward Warehouse.
Looks like I’ll have to bring more CDs next time just to make sure all the Tsaikos are taken care of. No problemo.
nalani – cd’s are good but why don’t you just bring the whole group down and give the Tsaikos a private performance….
May I just say — E Hula Mai Kākou gets my wholehearted endorsement! Thanks Nalani!
Glad to hear Dr. Doc’s surgery was successful. I hope both Dr. Doc and WassupDoc take it easy.
I better start coming over to the Tsaikogates more often, or at least stop by after.
Blind man likes the colors as was described to me. Think they sound sharp…..sorry called in sick so been in and out of bed, finally have time to read the blog and comment.
jm2375: I stand corrected, I thought engineers needed to study PDEs. Still, it’s a useful course for those going into engineering, to be sure. 🙂
Why is it that Graunke throws one interception and he gets yanked, seemingly to never play again, and Funaki can throw interception after interception after interception and remain the starter?
Jeezzz, I haven’t read the blog in a few days …
Dr. Doc, hope you get well soon! Prayers out for you… W-Doc, you, too. Breathe…
Happy belated berfday, LTUHF!
Nalani, mahalo nui loa for the CDs. That was so sweet of you, & Shelton for bringing them to the T-Gate.
Esme & whooosshhhh
thanks nalani, thanks al. my interstellar space communication device went off, and an alien from the dark side needs my assistance, so am going to give him a hand. something about his space craft got beat up coming down haleakala, so going give him ride home. hahahahaaaaaahhhhhhhhh. hope no get bachi!!!! see you all tomorrow..
Ack! See update up top.
Jason – I think we don’t have to worry too much about him going elsewhere…
Wow Laulau!
How come got so many people all “habuts” on the blog today? I join you all in frustration and celebration of the moments, but please remember that at the end of the day, these are just boys going to college and playing a game that is fun for them (and us!)
GO WARRIORS!!!
Jason – so how come PDE is not a *required* course for math majors? It’s like not having anatomy as a required class for bio majors. Oh wait, I didn’t take that class. Never mind. 😥
al:
gotcha – J and not D – I was close tho.
Pauoa Boy:
Eh bradda, thanks for all the effort to secure the services of one fine looking running back – please keep us posted!
I just saw a blog entry on myHawaiiFootball.com (formerly warriorshaka.com). Please pray for this boy, Chris Herman.

nalani…..peace out sista.
but, just for your sake, no call em jugs. people not in the know may be wondering why this girl talking about her jugs lil dat.
how about “puss” or “pussells”
The only specifically required courses are Math 321 (Intro to Advanced Mathematics) and Math 480 (Senior Seminar). Besides that, you can take whatever you want. Although, you do need to take a two-semester 400-level sequence.
In fact, 402-403 is “essential” only for those looking to go into Applied Mathematics. Among the other fields of work are Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Graduate Work in Mathematics, Operations Research, Secondary School Teaching, and Statistics. For me, as I’m going into Secondary Ed after I get my B.S., I “need” to take 351-352 (Euclidean/Non-Euclidean Geometry), 371-373 (Intro Probability/Statistics), and 412 (Intro to Abstract Algebra).
actually that is sound advice from the father.
but, maybe he don’t want to see his boy go too far away from him?
what u tink?
Thank you for posting that, Ronnie.
It is sound advice from his father. Doesn’t mean I have to like it. 😛
Zatoichi,
Wakarimasu. 😉
wafan,
U get mail
Jason, you’re welcome.
al, I understand if his father doesn’t want him too far away. I’m having a hard time thinking about my son staying in Long Beach next year while he goes to trade school – that’s less than an hour from where I live.
Stretch,
Maybe the girlfriend is the reason the Dad like him go on other trips…
Aunty Ronnie,
Inspiring story, Coach Mack is the best!
A-House,
At least the ball is rolling now and both sides have each others contact info, so we’ll see what happens. I’m going to try meet the Coach and talk to the kid and his dad too.
Ronnie – why don’t you move all your family back to Hawaii and let him go to school here??
Interesting revelation by Coach Mack on C da C tonight….
d1 – either that or that his mom lives here??
Stretch – I’m praying for that too 😀 I wonder if there are any good welding trade schools in Hawai’i.
d1 – What??!! I totally forgot to listen to Call the Coach tonight 🙁
Ronnie – but don’t tell your sister I said that, she’ll kill me
Ronnie,
Mack said that….
Stretch – “mumms the word”… especially when she is at the t-gate for the Cincy game 😆
d1 – that’s just mean 😆 was it an ‘on air’ comment?
ronnie – uh oh… she will be here??
…stretch really isn’t doing marketing when he says that he is.
nah, j/k
First he asks BC if the program is going back to Utah.
Then a little later he tells BC who the starting QB is gonna be.
d1 – Yeah, I heard that too… can’t believe he said that
d1 – ooops, i didn’t know you was going to tell her
Stretch – I guess I’m just a great salesman. My sister and her family, my friend from work, and maybe even my mom will be there. I personally think it would be great for her to move home too… I’ll have to work on that while we’re there.
So, will the show be remote from Utah next week? Or will it be from where ever they are staying next week??? Too bad they won’t be staying in LA or LV. They would have a packed house!
Hmmm… turkey hat trick?
Cool!
Ok, time to get ready for tomorrow. Blog you all later 😀 ❗
Kanani Herring changed her last name to Danielson (stepfather who raised her).

tonight’s news.
g’nite
Off topic –
very entertaining debate between the Honolulu Mayoral candidates
Did anyone go to call the coach tonight? What kind of pupus did they have tonight? Was the one dollar Henikens only from 6:00 to 7:00 or is it good all evening? Is BC telling the truth on the radio that the prizes are great and you ask Coach Mac anything? This show sounds too good to be true.
Just back from Call the Coach. Stretch we had some $1 H’s for you. 🙂
Tsaikos are good at making the special fold for the drawings. Won a jersey this week which I know Dr. Doc would have won had he been there. Coach Mack says get well soon. WDoc let me know when I can deliver the jersey on behalf of the Tsaikos and Coach Mack. Pictures 13 & 14 in attached link:
http://picasaweb.google.com/808Cruiser/TsaikoMisc?authkey=d1CxvAjpGx8#5262456103260235938
sj – awesome jersey!!
Awesome!
NALANI: Horrible – don’t remember the years Walter Nozoe played, but one of the years was the time UH beat Nebraska (1955). Hank Vasconcellos was the coach Skippy Dyer, Hartwell Freitas (he was the one who scored) were two of the players I remember.
Walter held his own against those big guys despite his stature. He later became a big wheel with the DOE. His son is currently the District Sup. of Schools for East Honolulu.
♠
shyloh – although I haven’t gone to the past few shows, for $15, the food is not bad, it can almost be considered a dinner. The prizes are good and the $1 Heine’s are mainly for the show. If you don’t drink beer, you can have water or ice tea.
Great job sj-macro!
I thought they were mainly for Stretch!
But then, what do I know? I’m jus’ a babooze!
Hiya!
Try this link to see Nalani’s cute little pups!

sjmacro- what an awesome gift for Dr. Doc… Mahalo for the autograph Coach Mack!!!
sjmacro,
That is an amazing gift for Dr. Doc! That is sure to raise his spirits and is a great way to help give him a boost during his recovery period! Thank you, myki, and Mac for the wonderful gesture!
Free play link time. Please ignore my next 5 posts if you do not want the off-topic stuff.
Global warming is having a significant effect on natural treasures like Yellowstone and Walden Pond.
sjmacro
What kind of food did the Willows have for you all? What were some of the other prizes given away by Coach Mac? Did the Heiniken become $4.00 a bottle at 7:01?

Ugh.. don’t like that Nobriga update. Sounds like his father isn’t convinced that Nobriga should come to Hawaii.
Garret,
Obviously someone at DMV in VietNam has way too much authority! 🙄
ronnie,
Thanks great story regarding Coach McMackin and Wife… To have them stitch in the kid’s name, that’s the extra yard.
I was looking at next year’s schedule.
For OOC we have:
9/4/2009 Central Arkansas Aloha Stadium TBA
9/12/2009 at Washington State Pullman, Wash. TBA
9/19/2009 at UNLV Las Vegas, Nev. TBA
11/21/2009 Navy Aloha Stadium TBA
12/5/2009 Wisconsin
These are all winable games.
We have Boise and Fresno at home, too.
If the team keeps building on their successes as they have been, we could be in for an incredible ride next season..
Thanks Liz! You made that look EZ. I didn’t realize you could link from Facebook. You da bomb!
madeinhawaii,
I agree with you about next year’s schedule. In fact, I can see UH being favored or even with everyone on the schedule next year except for Wisconsin…and the Wisconsin game is at Aloha Stadium where the Warriors always have a good chance.
The 2009 schedule is harder than the 2007 schedule, but not by much considering how far Washington State has fallen!
Ronnie,
I agree with the others, that was an awesome story. Between that story and the jersey photo by sjmacro for Dr. Doc, this has really been a heartwarming day!
Garret.
How did those synthetic diamond manufacturing experiments that were conducted years ago in space go? Did they ever publish the results?
d1shima,
I’m curious to find out how often the cops pull over a female driver in Vietnam and bust out their tape measure!
madeinhawaii,
I don’t know if they published those results. However, synthetic diamond manufacturing has come REALLY far in the past 2 years, so those space results would be outdated anyway. Or, maybe those results were used to help give a boost to the research that led to the current generation of man-made diamonds.
mih/Garret,
When I do get around to thinking about the ’09 season (except for the UNLV plans, of course) the first thing that will probably catch my attention is how many Seniors we lost from this season – esp. on Defense….
Garret,
😉
We got back the 3rd test result for Katie (my dog). Katie will have X-rays and an ultrasound tomorrow. Best case is that she has a tumor in her pancreas that will require surgery to get out. Worst case is that the X-ray or ultrasound will tell us that surgery won’t do any good. She has some tumor that is causing her insulin level to be WAY higher than normal while her blood sugar is WAY lower than normal.
In the best case scenario, she has the surgery and can live at most 2 years. In the worst case, surgery will be useless and we will keep feeding her the special food to keep her blood sugar up as long as possible. The X-rays are tomorrow morning and the ultrasound is before lunch, so I may not be on the blog much tomorrow…
Garret,
Sorry to hear about Katie.
d1shima,
I think there are a LOT of good defensive players that will be back next season (Rocky, Blaze, RJ, etc.) and a LOT of new players who will be ready to contribute (Paipai, etc.). I do not worry about a Mac-led team having a weak defense, especially with how the 2008 and 2009 classes are loaded with potential defensive contributors.
Next year we will have Alexander and Inoke back for their senior year, Rausch with a full Spring and a year behind him, and I’m guessing Nielsen redshirting. Lots of pieces on offense will be back, though I worry (like I do every season) about the OL with several key losses.
d1shima,
I’m going to take Katie out for a short walk (5x per day now!) and go to bed…
d1shima,
Thank you for your concern about Katie. Today’s news was not surprising but I hated hearing the confirmation from the vet.
Well, kinda bittersweet day today…
IS IT SATURDAY YET?
Oyasumina-tsai….
shyloh: Food line begins with 12″ (?) dinner plate, not manini pupu plate. Tables set with linen napkin like Na Koa lunches. Tonight: tossed salad, tako poke, chicken long rice, kalua pig cabbage, pork gisantes, rice, soybeans and d1’s favorite — petite one bite not WOW lau lau. 🙂 . If that doesn’t fill you up you can get a refill
$1 Heinekens go till 7, but early birds have been accomodated at about 5:30 or earlier when food is served.
Drawings tonight included #94 David Veikune jersey, #60 Lucas Kennard jersey, (2) dry fit shirts, (2) XXL coaches shorts, (2) bags and a backpack–and of course the helmet when UH wins
What position does Liloa play?
Oh, Garret, sorry to hear about Katie. I remember when Ronnie guys doggie-sat for you last year 😉
Go Badgers! 😆

KAUAI TSAI-KOS
How about getting together for the game on Saturday morning? I do not have PPV and would love to get together at a home or restaurant to watch the Warriors on the road!
Hi Liz, Al, Kazz, Nalani, sj and all other Tsai-kos!!! *waving wildly*
Anybody heard from bighilo? He still get ‘puter problems? 🙁
hmmm… all has been too quiet on the bhf2 side. Better call.
Garret
Difficult times with Katie…hope she’s not suffering much. Must be tough for the family. How are the kids taking in the situation?
I left bhf2 a voice message…
Nitey Nite and Sweet Warrior Dreams!
g’nite brew808 😆
Sjmacro You did something so very Tsaiko! Mahalo for being *Da Man* tonite.
I’ve been caught up with family matters most of the afternoon and eve. My thoughts were of Doc’s surgery today and was very happy to hear that things went well. Nurse Ratchett is good people, and she knows what’s good for our #1 patient. She’ll take good care of him on her watch.
Wassup Doc. Please take Miss Lizzy’s advice and just be there for the Doc. Hold his hand. Sing some of your oldies for him. Play a Nalani CD for him. Forget about what’s going on outside the hospital and just be there for him. Forget coming to the TV-gate on Saturday and spend time listening to the game on 1420 with Doc. I’m sure he will enjoy it more with you there at his bedside.
Attention BG ~
Closing thoughts for today include your laying the foundation for our T- gate site. For that we thank you. I know you have another gig to attend to, so I closed ranks on you. (Not to be confused with pulling rank!…I don’t outrank a BG!)
I took charge of securing our Tsaiko Base of Operations (TBO) at Cabana *A* for Christmas Eve. I felt we should keep the option of having it available for that day as a “just in case we may need it thing.”
kekoa,
ye thy sage of the warrior beat very well spoken my brother.
wassup doc,
just keep believing and trusting. crossed appendages shall not heal. someday, i will share with you my testimony.
our prayers shall continue for dr. jim doc’s healing.

It’s good to see made-in-hawaii posting again. We had been missing his wit and wisdom around the playhouse while he was tending to critical matters.
Trolls sometimes allow us to exercise our area X-ray mentality. Too bad I no longer have a license to kill…even my hip pocket orders have been rescinded! (wink wink)
A fine morning to all!
I hope Dr. Doc is now comfortable and resting up for his next TGate — four weeks until the next one! Whoo-hoo!!!
Do they have airbags in Vietnam? If not, that might be one possible explanation for the size requirement.
Maybe it was the guys way of getting even not with his (former?) girlfriend but of getting even with the dog for all the times it loved his leg.
Awesome sj!!! The epitome of Tsai-ko-ness.
Thank you d1!
On further thought. Maybe they drink too much caffine laced drinks?
Before Esme’ing for the day.
I noticed the local Chevron dropped its price $0.10 in one day. Simply amazing!
Could it be under $2.00 by the end of the year?
…Liloa’s girlfriend lives in Hawai’i….yesssss…
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Good morning Tsaikos,
Liloa will most likely come to UH, but it is not a given…yet. Coach Mac and company doing a good job getting their recruiting done early….
GOOD LUCK TO WARRIORS!!!
Pomai: 38 to 21
Go Warriors.
BG,
Katie hasn’t suffered much at all since the prescription food has raised her blood sugar levels. She is more tired than normal but *loves* the new food and I feed her 4x per day, which she loves.
Actually, right now Katie is very, very unhappy because she is at the vet for her x-rays. She hates being at the vet!
The kids seem to be doing well but they internalize some things. We do get a lot of questions about death now, especially since they have been really lucky so far with the family and friends they know.
Good morning to Tsai-kos here and everywhere!!
Garret, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family today. I hope that the X-rays show a positive outcome for Katie. All of us animal lovers can empathize with what you are going through at this time.
Our 11 year old cocker spaniel developed glaucoma 3 years ago, and had to have an eye removed. We were devastated! The doctor warned us that the chances of the disease occuring in the remaining eye was quite high and put Pepper on prophylactic eye drops. A year later we had to have the remaining eye removed. He’s hearing is not as acute as it used to be but he’s still our baby. We were asked by some, if it wouldn’t have been kinder to put him to sleep, I was apalled. Imagine if humans were put down just because they could not see or hear. He’s probably the happiest dog around.
We have only good thoughts for Katie today.
Getting ready for football practice. bbl.
Great Morning All!
Looking forward to a better blog day today.
Sounds like a critical day at practice for those Wounded Warriors. Decisions to be made post-practice on travel roster. Looking forward to the updates this afternoon.
I guess I need to spend some time learning about Facebuuk now. “Thanks” Liz! 😆
HiHo…
Good Morning All! Hope everyone has a good hump day!
new post!

Thank you. It sounds like a good deal going to see the Call the Coach show.
