For the love of the game

Hi, I’m Kortney Kikiloi-Borthwick, and I am very honored to be today’s guest blog writer. Stephen and I have been friends for the past four years.

UH football has been a big part of my life for the past 26 years. Did I mention that I am 29?

From the age of 3, my dad started taking me to football games. I loved cheering, yelling “defense” when I had no idea what defense was, and getting churros and souvenirs. At a very young age, I was hooked on football, and all the fun that came with it.

Tailgating was always a family affair with my dad, uncles and cousins. My uncles taught us kids how to play blackjack, blocks, and bet on the attendance of each game. I do blame them for my love of gambling (for amusement purposes only, of course). And nothing beats the great food you’d eat at our tailgates. Tasty chicken and oyster sauce steak, just to name a few.

Football has been a tradition for my dad and I. We never missed a game. As I got older, I learned more about the game and how it’s played. I am in love with football! I am honestly depressed when the season is over.

This will be my 27th season of UH football, and I can’t wait for it to get started. I started bringing my first daughter to the games when she was 3, and this year my second born will start coming as well. I don’t expect to miss a game anytime soon.

kayla

  21. gigi-hawaii June 4, 2011 10:16 am

hi guys. Li Na of China won the French Open today.

Noticed her opponent the Italian Schiavone was very loud, screaming the same word each time she swung her racket. Didn’t help. She lost.

So the silent ones won (Federer and Li) and the noisy ones lost.

  22. gigi-hawaii June 4, 2011 10:17 am

Nadal (who screams) will face Federer (the silent Swiss) tomorrow. Guess who will win.

  23. gigi-hawaii June 4, 2011 10:22 am

    Also tomorrow: the NBA finals.

If Dallas wins tomorrow, they will win the series and become champ.

ST said that the team that wins game 3 after going 1-1 in the 1st 2 games will win the series.

    Yay for the Mavs!

6’5″, 290-pound OG Dustin Adams committed to the Warriors! He is from North Dakota and his other scholarship offer was from North Dakota.

  31. Derek June 4, 2011 11:10 am

Who recruited Dustin Adams? Was it Coach Shaw? If so, then I have to trust his judgment.

Is there a highlight reel of him? Is there any connection to Hawaii with Adams? I am a little leery since his only offer was from North Dakota and no other DI college. He must be a sleeper or has been under the radar. Otherwise, maybe the coaches reached a little.

In any event, Adams has some size and I hope he turns out to be a very good player. Welcome to the program!

  32. jm2375 June 4, 2011 11:11 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

    Welcome Kortney!

gigi – never, ever, ever, bet against Rafa Nadal in a clay court match. It will be a great match tomorrow, but odds are in favor of Rafa.

  33. gigi-hawaii June 4, 2011 11:14 am

jm, nah, Djokovic beat Nadal, and Federer beat Djokovic.

so odds are in favor of Federer.

    I HOPE!!!

  34. SteveM June 4, 2011 11:18 am

  37. gigi-hawaii June 4, 2011 11:24 am

jm, lol. you’re right. Got a C for tennis in college. Why? Because I flunked the final test on the court.

Could not for the life of me serve. The ball went up and went down on the same side of the court, not over the net.

  38. gigi-hawaii June 4, 2011 11:26 am

    maybe I should have screamed.

  39. Ballpicker June 4, 2011 11:33 am

Kortney, give your Dad my and DPK’s are best regards.

  40. Jack Flash June 4, 2011 11:36 am

    Aloha Gang!

My wife took me out for a great bday breakfast at Boots n Kimo’s, and now i’m chillin’ in front of the TV and catching up on the blog. Great posts lately! Football season can’t come soon enough. The MWC possibly gaining AQ status in the BCS is really intriguing. Bummed about the whole Tressel thing up in Buckeye country. Say what you want about the situation, i still think he’s a good person and a great coach. GO WARRIORS!

  41. wafan June 4, 2011 11:43 am

    KK . . .

Yep, i know. But, will be here for another 1.5 months.

  42. wafan June 4, 2011 11:44 am

Hoping Adams sticks with his commitment!

  43. Dennis Halloran June 4, 2011 12:02 pm

Versus is showing the National Collegiate Rugby 7’s Championship

Hawaii should be great at this except for the distance for opponents

  44. WarriorMojo June 4, 2011 12:04 pm

Well, I’m not al, but I’m here to tell you that the inner circle and koa lots are now sold out. Only 238 Kam lot passes left. Snooze, you lose.

  45. warriorsun June 4, 2011 12:22 pm

    who knows dustin austin?

u can bet, dustin will be buzzed with more offers now that he has verbed to hawaii.

minnesota, montana, idaho, nebraska and kansas are states in recruiting proximity.

hard to hide a 6-5, 290# all-state OLM that did not take one visit and bowls over defensive players like a Michael Oher film clip. what about his work ethos? u gotta like these big white boys from the tundra and wide open country. sleeper….yes indeed!

  46. Pcwarrior June 4, 2011 12:28 pm

Gigi, doesn’t the Mavs owner scream? Go Heat

  50. Slugger June 4, 2011 12:41 pm

Hi, Kortney! Are you related to Emilly Borthwick?

    Dennis Halloran,

You can go to the Concordia WVB games and say “Hey” to HC Dan Fisher.

  51. Last Call June 4, 2011 12:45 pm

Anyone hear anything yet on what kind of options the TV viewer will have for the upcoming 2011-2012 season when OC 16 takes over ?

Will there still be free TV for sports other than football ?

Will there be some special channel for all UH sports so the cable company can screw us more ?

Is there any sports reporter at this paper that can rattle a cage and get some answers ?

  52. Last Call June 4, 2011 12:59 pm

Anyone ever use Panda Travel ? They have some good prices on package deals for UH fans but I’ve had some bad experiences with package deals with other travel companies in the past .

  53. Kortney K-Ki June 4, 2011 1:12 pm

Thanks for welcoming me! Unfortunately, I am not related to the Borthwick Mortuary family. No cemetery plot for me. DPK and Ballpicker, I will call my dad right now and let him know you said Hi. I used to work with Stephen at the Honolulu Advertiser. I was an account executive. Once he found out about my love for sports, we’ve been best friends ever since!

  54. d1shima June 4, 2011 1:22 pm

Terrific job of Guest Hosting, Kortney!

I know the feeling…91 days to go!

  55. gigi-hawaii June 4, 2011 1:48 pm

PcWarrior, yes, too bad the Mavs coach screams — or at least his body language on TV shows he does — unlike the Heat’s coach, who is as cool as a cucumber.

    NOT!!!

He won’t be cool when the Mavs knock out the Heat. He will be red in the face, sweating profusely, and look downright SCARED.

  56. gigi-hawaii June 4, 2011 2:19 pm

Actually, the Mavs coach does NOT scream. It’s their owner, Mark Cuban. LOL. That’s who I meant.

  57. Hawaiianbod June 4, 2011 3:07 pm

    Howzit, everyone!

Been in the 90’s the past couple of days. Weird up and down weather lately. Just a weird year so far.

Aloha, Kortney! I think many of us have similar stories growing up… with the older generations bringing us keiki along at a very young age, to teach us about sports and the student-athletes of our beloved University of Hawaii.

  94. Michigan Warrior June 4, 2011 6:07 pm

    Happy Birthday, Protector!

I’ll be home from 16-22 June, for my Dad’s services.

Moving shortly after that to Georgia.

So, really… do I stick with “Michigan Warrior”? Or, do I come up with a new moniker? I’ll update you all as we get more info.

Our trip to Vegas should still be a GO as things look for now. Really looking forward to it too!

Lightning strikes on da oddah side of Manoa valley…

  157. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 5, 2011 12:11 am

Da tundernlitning was spectacular here in Windward O`ahu – and scary. DrDoc & I set out on a really, really long hike along the Old Pali Road into upper Nu`uanu around 2 pm and decided to cut it short around 6 pm because we could see some really threatening clouds with little flickers of light about ten miles north of us. We headed on out to the Pali Highway, hooked our thumbs to catch a ride to the next bus stop at the base of the Pali in order to catch a bus down to the next stop where we’d parked our car about two miles in towards Maunawili Valley. Fortunately, an enviro colleague picked us up and drove us to our car. It started spritzelling about an hour later and then the heavens cracked open Big Time.

Funny about the reference to The Bucket List. I am in the midst of making one and find that I am sort of stuck. The only things I can come up with is winning a huge inter-state lottery, starring in a local theatrical production, and building a transitional housing facility for homeless veterans who want to start their lives up again.

The likelihod of any of these happening on my watch is about as likely as the sun rising in the west and setting in the east on Monday.

    What’s on your Bucket List?

  165. Garret June 5, 2011 2:58 am

Ferd’s article made it seem like BYU and Utah were counting for the MWC in the determination for the MWC to get AQ status in 2012. Ferd also said that “And the Warriors themselves — as well as Fresno State and Nevada — can help out their new brethren by performing well. Their records this season will be counted in the evaluation.” So, I posted a clarification in the comments to his article:

The records of BYU and Utah will *not* count in the BCS evaluation period that will decide whether or not the MWC will get AQ status in 2012. The records of UH, Fresno State, and Nevada will *not* count in the BCS evaluation period for 2012 AQ status either.

The record for TCU will count even though they will join the Big East next year. If TCU’s records in 2008, 2009, and 2010 (which include 2 BCS games) were removed from the MWC’s tally, then the MWC wouldn’t even be qualified to make the appeal for AQ status for 2012 since the MWC wouldn’t have earned enough BCS points in the 2 categories that they are in the top 6 now. So, it is a good thing that the BCS is forced by their rules to let TCU count for the MWC even though they will play in the Big East in 2012.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/furtherreview/20110605_Mountain_West_needs__to_prove_it_on_the_field.html

  166. Garret June 5, 2011 3:07 am

Nice article in the Star-Advertiser today basically summarizing how CBS CS has no need to give the MWC any extra TV money than they get now because the contract has 5 years left. The chart with the article is missing some key information:

    Pac-12 $20.8 million

    Big 10 $17.6 million

    Southeastern $17 million

    Big 12 $15 million

    Mountain West $1.1 million

The Pac-12, Big 10, and MWC do *not* give local TV rights to their schools, so the money listed for them includes their local TV rights. The SEC and Big 12 schools *do* own their local TV rights. For example, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia make quite a bit of money for their local TV rights…those SEC schools will make more than the Pac-12 does from TV. Texas will be getting more than $12 mil/year (the deal averages out to $15 mil/year) from ESPN for their local TV rights, which they will get in addition to their conference TV money.

This is similar to have the MWC was making 3x the TV money that the WAC had been making, but UH was making about triple what all MWC teams made from TV because UH could sell its local TV rights to Oceanic/K5 while MWC teams couldn’t sell their local TV rights.

When comparing TV money, the fact about whether or not schools own their local TV rights *really* does matter. UH’s PPV deal is a great example of the $$$ difference.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/sportsnews/20110605_Playing_catchup.html

  167. Garret June 5, 2011 3:23 am

It is amazing when you consider that when the WAC TV money is added to the Oceanic TV deal, UH has been getting about $3 mil from TV…nearly triple the TV money that BYU, Utah, and TCU have been getting. BYU showed how much their TV value was worth when they went indy and ESPN gave them a huge contract, Utah will be getting more than $20 mil from TV in the Pac-12, and TCU will be getting many times UH’s TV money when TCU joins the Big East.

Utah, TCU, and BYU had an amazing run of success considering that they were getting far less from TV than all AQ schools…and they were even getting far less from TV than UH.

  168. Garret June 5, 2011 3:28 am

Nice feature article on Jerry Glanville. Colt was mentioned in the article:

The Colonials took Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson with their first-round pick. He had shoulder surgery last year. They also signed quarterback Colt Brennan, a 2007 Heisman Trophy finalist who was released by the Redskins in 2010 and was later seriously injured in a car crash in Hawaii.

“I believe in second chances,’’ says Glanville.

    http://www.boston.com/sports/football/articles/2011/06/05/full_speed_ahead/?page=full

  169. Garret June 5, 2011 3:30 am

When looking at Colt’s decision to play in the UFL, it is important to note that *17* of Hartford’s players last season were signed by the NFL and 5 made the active roster. That is a FAR bigger number than the number players from any CFL or Arena league team getting a shot in the NFL.

Glanville says the quality of the UFL is better than college and arena football.

Seventeen Hartford players were signed by NFL clubs following the 2010 UFL season, although only five made it to active rosters.

  170. Garret June 5, 2011 3:31 am

Wyoming’s football coach says that the MWC won’t lose much by replacing BYU, Utah, and TCU with UH, Fresno, and Nevada.

Q: What are your thoughts about the new-look Mountain West Conference with the addition of Boise State this year and Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii the following year?

Christensen: “I think it is good, and we will continue to be a strong conference. It will be a more even playing field from a financial (budgetary) standpoint with the other teams coming in as compared to those who have departed.

“So I think there will be more balance and more parity within the league. I’m excited about Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii becoming part of it. I don’t think we lose a bunch because they are all quality teams who have played in bowl games.”

Throughout this grand design of things you’ll receive an A with regard to effort. Where you lost everybody was first on all the particulars. You know, people say, the devil is in the details… And that could not be much more true at this point. Having said that, let me inform you what exactly did work. The article (parts of it) is quite convincing and this is possibly why I am taking an effort in order to opine. I do not make it a regular habit of doing that. Next, even though I can easily see the leaps in reason you make, I am not necessarily convinced of how you appear to connect the details which inturn produce your conclusion. For right now I will subscribe to your point however hope in the near future you actually link your dots much better.
