Big Island Kurt: Out of the Woodwork
Consider this one of the highlights of my life! For one day at least, I get the keys to the Cadillac — also known as the Warrior Beat Blog. This comes on the heels of a recent Warrior football practice in Hilo where I got to meet some of the good folks on the blog. Yet there are so many that I still have yet to meet.
In short, this is Bigislandkurt and I’m from……well, the Big Island. Ka’u to be exact. I’m currently in economic exile on the Hilo side of the island, and if people don’t already know, me and A-Joe trace our formative years to that great and majestic district of Ka’u. I’ve been a Rainbow/Rainbow Warrior/Warrior football fan my whole life (I’m 41), but my earliest memories come from the Dick Tomey years. I would always have my “Honolulu” cousins go to the campus to find me a UH Football media guide. I’d study it religiously, and although I was well in my 20’s before I ever saw a life UH game at Aloha Stadium, As a kid, I would always try to watch the Dick Tomey show. The names that got me started were Ralph Cherry, Gary Allen, David Tolo’umu, Alvis Satele, Dana McClemore, Walter Murray, Niko Noga. Offensive linemen Samson Kela and Rashad Galimba both traced roots to the Big Island. Sam was/is from Hilo and Rashad’s ohana is from Ka’u. So it gave me more reason to be a UH fan. As a college student in Colorado, me and friends would drive to Laramie, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins during the original WAC years. As a matter of fact, I have the dubious distinction of being kicked out of War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, WY. Any ideas why?
The UH fan base is often colored with Oahu colors. It is one that is punctuated by tail gates, stadium traffic, and the every day Oahu realities of what life is like when UH football season is in play. Yet for droves of Warrior football fans throughout the state (and world for that matter), game day for us comes with a few differences. Whether you are crowded around the car radio or in the backyard of that one uncle who purchased the PPV package, this blog is dedicated to you. I know of fisherman friends who listen to the game out on the ocean when they go ika shibi. These are the hardcore UH fans out “in the sticks” like me. Many of us live in areas where there’s no power grid lines, let alone pay-per-view. These fans find a way to listen to the game no matter what. WE crowd around radios in garages and we go as wild as the stadium folks when Moniz delivers that perfect strike to Pollard in the end zone. Sometimes, I feel like you guys can hear us screaming all the way on Oahu! Remember that scene from the movie Hoosiers where the folks back home couldn’t make it to the big game in Indianapolis and they were listening to the big game on the radio? Well, that be us who live in da sticks. To all those Warrior football fans out in the woodwork — Moloka’I, Big Island, Maui, Kauai, Ni’ihau, Lanai, and even Kaho’olawe, today’s blog goes out to you.
Gppd Mprning BIK NIce pics!!!
Morning, BIK!
I’ll get to meet you someday.
Too early,, Good Morning BIK. Nice pics!!!
Love those pics. Great Job BIK.
Aloha BIK!
Good morning, everyone!
BIK . . .
Great post! Very similar to the Tsai-ko bios.
Cool photos, too!
Good morning all! Especially the above night owls! Nice pics.
Little after 7am here now. Have to take out the trash, and set up the sprinkler for the lawn!

Good Morning Tsaikos!
Great job BIK!
For those lucky enough to have received some Hawaiian salt from Aunty Liz, this maybe of interest.

Here’s their website

BIK,
Awesome blog entry! You represent your area well and speak for a lot of others. It is for fans like you that I think that it is great that UH is sending the Warriors to the neighbor islands.
My Mom is from the Lapahoehoe area and is one of the biggest UH fans that I know.
Hey BIK, it would be great if you included a pic of yourself. It would help cement the bonds of WB bloggers even further! In fact, I would hope all bogmeisters include a pic of themselves.
BIK,
U da man!…….best wishes for your day on the blog. ditto on da pics.
forgot to mention….i wuz born in Laupahoehoe as well……i hear it’s sorta like a ghost town now?
Morning BIK
No foget the 9th Island too.
Great intro and pics.
Awesome…Das why proud I live Hawaii
BIK and Tsaiko Blog Dogs,
Great tribute to all of you in the “woodworks”. The days of listening to a game always evokes memories of great action as our mental visual is more colorful than the actual happening. Thanks for sharing.
BIK~nice of you to give us another prospective, we Oahu Tsaikos have the benefit of being able to attend games live and Tgates and Cattle Calls so we not realize your fan experience is different. I hope you will be able to make at least one of the games and Tgates this year.
Very nice bio BIK.
Good morning gang! Mahalo for all the great words so far.
Some snipets about the photos — The first one is actually a rainbow over my house. If you look at it good, my house is in the lower right hand corner of the picture, and yes — we literally live in the woods :). Second photo is of the great Ka’u High School — me and A-joe’s Alma Mater, and if you look real good, you’ll see a snow-capped Mauna Loa in the background. The third picture is of the fisherman ladder or “the hoist” down at Kalae, South point. It was a rite of passage for young folks in Ka’u to muster up the courage to jump off that cliff! And the last photo is of some good, down home, organic pasture pork. Yup, them buggers get harvested regularly where I live!
BIK
So who else got a story about catching a UH game “no matter what?” Away from a TV, away from the stadium, and STILL found a way to catch the game?
Kurt,
Are you from the Buffalo Alma Mata ?
If so, they are salivating over this latest done tv deal with the Pac-12.
Wowza, starts at 20m year, and increases annually.
Ahhhhh Laupahoehoe — still as quaint and beautiful as ever. Such a proud group of folks from that area encompassing Laupahoehoe, O’okala and Pauilo. I have to admit that Laupahoehoe High school has got to have the most beautiful campus in the state. It overlooks the ocean and it is as though grandma herself planted all those flowers.
BIK
Great Morning All!
BIK,
Terrific blog post!
Cool E — I’m actually a UNC alum (Greeley) for undergrad and CSU (Ft. Collins) alum for grad skoo. Between Greeley, Ft. Fun, Denver and Boulder, there were at least a thousand Hawaii students. We all met up at UH games and each other’s Lua’us. I knew a lot of folks from Boulder, including several fraternity bro’s who were on CU’s national Championship team in 1990.
BIK
Good morning Tsaikos!!
Great post BIK!! Hope to meet you sometime soon at a t-gate, cc, kk or whatevas.
That deal with the Pac12 that CU is in on gonna make it all the better when we rake them over the pulehu coals at Aloha Stadium this September.
BIK
Hi BIK, welcome! I loved your bio.
Before there was PPV, I would listen to the game on the radio, and if we won, I would watch it on TV long after the game ended. So much fun!
Now there is PPV and we get to watch it live.
In some ways, we feel it’s better than being there at the stadium.
I hope to meet you guys at a t-gate, cc or kk soon! Pro’lly won’t be this season though — Mama and I expecting our second child in September. Needless to say, I might be tethered to the farm for the foreseeable future! 🙂
BIK
Ahh, the UNC bears.
Boy those fb guys were stoked to be playing out here in that memorable ’07 season. plenty of heart they get.
I lived in Ft. Collins for one year in my young’n days, right across from the CSU campus. good fun place.
btw, props and kudos to your intro write up. So does this mean that ST is gonna let you borrow the keys to a cadillac escalade?
Nice write up BIK!
Ahhhh, South Point and pig hunting. I remember it well. We used to go down to Manuka State Park to fish, dive and hunt…and maybe throw back a few.
Great times!
Aloha brah!
Go Warriors!
BIK dem porkers sure look good and I know NSF would have a good time with them on his grill at our tailgate. LOL
Looks like the BaseBows got out of Reno just in time. It’s snowing today. 😯 🙄
Is Bern absolutely not considering having his son look at UH as an option? The editorial this morning suggests that its only the Pacific Northwest that has a shot at his son.
#36 Buffoman,
I think your perception is spot on.
BIK
Good morning Tsaikos and BIK
Go Wahine!
Run like the wind!
Jump to the sky!
Throw no caution!
On track to beat the field!
re: #36/37……I guess one might say, “it’s a family tract record” too bad; phhhht!!, moving on to those who want to become WARRIORS!!
Good morning, gotta support the Big island, from Honokaa side myself had a gf from Naalehu who still hangs around the great bakery.
Shane Mosely made off with $5 mil (not including ppv receipts) for that marathon he ran against Pacquiao. Said he’s gonna “take some time off to enjoy the fruits of his labor.” Easy money eh?
BIK
Finals week for the UH system. Here’s hoping our boys take care of business before they head off into the summer.
BIK

It’s sad if UH is not even considered. You always hope for the best for the sons and daughters of Hawaii wherever they feel they need to be, but we all wish the cream of the crop would just once, collectively set a precedence and choose to play for the home team. Understandably, they do what’s best for themselves and we respect that, but a special group of young athletes could do something special and set the stage for years to come. That said, from a UH football faithful’s standpoint, we only want those that WANT to be Warriors so that is that! Go Warriors!

No. 12
BIK — Beautiful writing that is really moving and makes me proud to be FBI!
I am 70 yrs. old and your piece just brought on a flood of emotions and great memories of the family gathered round the radio listening to re-created baseball games of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the New York Giants, and the Wahington Senators. Also the Pacific Coast League minor league baseball teams like the San Francisco Seals, the Oakland Oaks, and the Hollywood Stars. I mention these teams because it’s funny to see the reaction of young people when they hear these names. I can’t remember if we listened to pro football, but I know we listened to Pacific Coast Conference (now, PAC 12) games. Of course, we never missed UH football and basketball games. Also, we never missed a boxing broadcast, espcially when Hawaii’s world champs were fighting — Dado Marino and Carl “Bobo” Olson.
Thank you for helping an old fud get warm and fuzzy.
Good morning Tsaikos…and BIK…Awesome story and great pics….
Hey, I’m sort of from Ka’u too…LOL, actually have an acre of land there….
Ahhhh, it’s good to finally be back to the blog…
I forgot to mention that kids are so amazed when I try to explain re-created baseball games.
I think the two masters at re-creating were Fank Valenti and the “Captain” himself, Les Keiter.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Nice intro BIKurt!
(J)James: You still got those modified “H” decals?
nice blog bik!
when the visuals are not there the voices on the other side provide the drama .better radio those days.
BIK – if I’m off island cruising, I’m on the internet checking the updates on the UH football – usually the Blog – or on the Mainland, I would be checking the blog for the scores.
Braddah Kurt –
Excellent “slice of life” from the neighbor island scene. Fans across the state have their own ways to enjoy UH sports, and you gave us a nice look at thel Big Island small town style.
My Nephew Shon Shon had a great time with you and the other Big Island Tsaikos after the scrimmage at Panaewa. I hope you folks have other opportunities to hook up and watch a game or two together. The gang you had over there, including Hilo Billy and BigHiloFan2 are some good folks and big UH fans.
Thanks for the excellent post. It wouldn’t have been complete with out the “free range” puaa’a’ pics. 😆
Pua’a that should read above… 😳
BIK ~ My visit with you and the Big Island Fans was really fantastic! I’m looking forward to rolling out the red carpet for you and your wife wen you are able to come TG with us. I hope your body guard (Maika’i) will come as well.
Nice to see your handprints on the WB this AM. Your intro just set the tone for a good fun day. It’s already fun reading all the good wishes pouring in from Tsai-ko’s the world over.
Enjoy your day my friend!
Hopefully this isn’t a repost…
I hope we are in his top 3:

Good morning everyone.
Great job BIK!
Reminds me of when I was one small kid, I used to have one small transistor radio by my bed that I used to listen to Islander baseball, Hawaii professional basketball, and whatever was on. I remember Red Rocha was the coach or player for the Hawaii Chiefs basketball. I would fall a sleep listening to one or the other and my battery would be dead or weak in the morning. I had hard time telling my mom that my battery was dead because we no had money for buy new one. She would get one old battery from the freezer I could use. Supposed to help charge ’em, but I no think so. When I would go to the Islander games at Honolulu Stadium with the Reggie Knothole gang ticket, I would lose interest in the game unless Carlos Bernier was up. We would run to right field to try to catch his homerun ball. The baseball and basketball broadcasts was much more interesting. Made you squeeze and say a little prayer to help the team, visualizing every pitch or swing or shot. I know we had Harry Calas and that Al Michaels guy that went to ESPN. Also listened to Chuck Leahy on sports broadcasts. Those brought were some colorful broadcasters that made whatever they were broadcasting, very exciting. Thanks, BIK, for bringing back whatever is left of my memories in my small kid days.
re: #48 Sorry for demoing the “General” to captain.
demoing = demoting
Hilo Moon, Les Keiter was nicknamed “the General” by Joe Moore when they acted together. I think it was an old Hawaii 5-0 episode where Mr Keiter played a general. Out of respect, Joe Moore started calling Mr. Keiter, General. I could be wrong, but that’s how I remember it.
BIK, you brought back more memories from my small kid days. I remember watching Notre Dame playing Michigan State live, on our black and white TV for the national championship in football. Both teams were unbeaten and it was the final game of the season. Bowl game? I can’t remember. MSU had local boys Bob Apisa, Charley Wedemeyer, and the barefoot kicker, Dick Kenney. I don’t remember Charley playing much because, I think he was a sophomore. In those games, nobody was allowed to play as freshmen. I’m not sure if I remember correctly, but wasn’t it the first live sports broadcast from the mainland to Hawaii? I also remember watching NFL games the day after it happened. Or maybe it was the week after, watching last week’s game as today’s game was being played. Can anybody out there clarify my memory? Cloudy day, cloudy memory.
Oops, #62, In those games should be in those days.
Good morning, gang! Good morning, BigIslandKurt!
Great write-up of yourself and your memories. I thought that was a picture of South Point… Thanks for posting the pictures. Good looking pua’a.
ST ~ Have a good vacation week!
Howzit BIK and Tsaikos!
Nice narrative BIK. Never met you, but look forward to meeting you one day.
Slugger, it looks like South Point. Remember traveling over dem lava rocks to get to the spot to go fish for Ulua. Also, remember catching some 30 pounders than storing them in those small pools. When we left that day, my friend’s Uncle let us go in with our three-prong spear to reap da rewards. Unfortunately, I missed the kill-spot and my new 20 dollar spear ended up being toast. Those buggahs put up a fight!
aloha bik…nice job brother.
next trip to kona i need to hook up with you for one pork chop lunch at manago’s.
keep it going!
tommui…i seem to have one sticker left of that coveted sticker. not the really big ones. but, i’d trade you for a hamburger on tuesday.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
HiHo~
al, any word on Shaq?
Howzit Tsai-ko Nation!
BIK — You represent the BI Tsai-kos well! Thanks for sharing your story and picʻs! Iʻm happy to have met you and shared bleacher observations at the scrimmage in Kea’au, as well as at the Pana’ewa ‘aha’aina afterward. And I must say to all who were NOT there, BIK not only knows how to “dress” the “pasture pork”, he’s an expert at cooking’em too!
Kekoa, I know you can attest to that! I enjoyed meeting you, whom I consider the Dean of WB bloggers!
To DPK, it was a pleasure meeting your ‘ohana at Pana’ewa. They are consummate Hawaiian hosts!
I live in Waimea, and enjoy life without digital cable (old-school analog guy), so I’ve been relying on K5 for my UH sports fix for years. When that was not available, I would get in the car and drive a few miles south where my radio can pick up AM1420. Now, with streaming audio, I can pick it up on my computer so no need drive. With K5 Sports going away, I guess I’ll be totally dependent on the laptop.
gloomy monday morn but still no betta place to be. hiya 808. mia cause was state bball tourny so you know the rules.
first howzit to BIK, shaka braddah and first class. sweet neighbor island style looking forward to shaking paws with you when you can make it.

PS- Great Blog Post, BIK! And congrats to you and your wife on the expected little one!!!
Thanks for demonstrating so beautifully that Warrior fans come in all sizes and shapes and points of view, are local to Hawaii, ex-pats, serving overseas, or just plain enjoy the ALOHA that keeps us together!
Many a time this blog has provided a play-by-play to those without access to a broadcast…
The Warrior Beat goes on!
Have a happy “vacay”, ST!
AL: #67 Sounds good – and where?
mmmmmmmmmm sound like wimpy trying to con popeye bwhaaaaaaaaaaa
tommui had a great time with the Baldwin parents and coaches this weekend. nice bunch
LizKaua’i – #72 – You’re right, many times I have followed the play-by-play on the blog, sometimes when the broadcast play-by-play was unavailable or inept (Mountain Network or whatever…)
Good morning folks! Da guy in charge today doing a supah job! Loving it! Way to go BIK!
Great post Bik! Having roots in Kula Maui your words and pictures speak for a lot of us who remember what it’s like to live “country style” in this beautiful state. You absolutely made my day with your fond memories of the Dick Tomey Show. As a young producer/cameraman for KHON I worked religiously on that show for almost 10 years and to know it made a lasting impression on a viewer or two means more than you could ever know. Thanks Bik.
BIK…great entry to the blog today. Dat pork sure looks guud!
Remember watchig da radio for UH games. Had to keep turning da radio fo catch da signal. Out on da north side da reception was pretty bad and even now am signal not da bestest.
Was guud trying fo visualized da action going on.
Ho jj got some time to breath now yeah? Going get busy again in a few days? Speso session maybe?
Putting da batteries in da freezer work?…some peeps still doing dat.
Had to cook 1500 chickens this past Saturday. Hoo was interesting .. in one tunda storm complete wit light show too.
Anyhoo, play nice peeps…
Warm my heart you guys. Driving the Cadillac is better than I could have ever imagined. 🙂
BIK
Batteries in the freezer? It works. But so does the stove top:

BIK
Good morning all!! Have a great week ahead!!
Feel free to post some bigups, hellos, or kudos to the football team today. A few of them who I know are lurking on the blog today. Here a message from me to them — “OBLITERATE YOUR FINALS! It’s OK to be a SCHOLAR!”
BIK
BIK, thanks for the interesting battery info… seems like “cooking” da batteries works best.
Warriors!…rememba…student comes before athlete (student athlete)..no mo grades, no can play. team needs all of u guys!
Ditto bik: ONE TEST AND CLEAR!!! GO WARRIORS!!!
Jim Donovan is chatting living on SportsHawaii.com
http://www.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=39292
pj2…he went home to mull his choices. the word is its between colorado st and hawaii.
probably get word by tuesday evening.
in all fairness, the gibber needs to know by tuesday what his intentions are. if he chooses elsewhere, we’ll have to bring in one more recruit this coming weekend. since gibber likes to bring em in on thursdays a tuesday decision is imperative. the late signing period when loi’s are binding ends next wednesday.
aloha bik,
mahalo for the photos, looking good.
GO WARRIORS
GO WILDCATS X2
Shoko,
I’ve never been to South Point, but my son told me after the fact that he had dived off South Point when he was on the BI hanging with his friend. He knows not to worry his Mom.
Since I moved to the mainland before Aloha Stadium was even built, I only remember the old Termite Stadium for HS football games and the HI Islanders games. I could only watch UH games on TV in AZ when they played BYU. Because of the large Mormon population, some BYU FB & BB games were on TV. Just remember trying not to scream in the middle of the night when UH beat BYU. THAT was cool!
BIK… nice write up…thank you.
When I was in Japan during the latter half of the 80’s and early 90’s, the internet was in it’s infancy and there were no chat rooms or blogs so I would jump at every opportunity to get to the larger bookstores to peruse newspapers and get Warrior tidbits. Whenever I called home, I would ask for sports updates. Every time I would see an article about an athlete out of Hawaii, I would smile and feel the pride.
uhwarriors,
Mahalo for the heads up on Donovan’s chat.
Termite Stadium = Termite Palace
tommui sent you email

Actually Laupahoehoe covers Honohina to Ookala. The da guys and gals from Paauilo went to Honokaa HS.
When Sugar was King, LHS used to grad around 45 to 60 students a year. Now, it’s around 15 or less. I believe last year (2010) graduating class was 11.
koakane,
The softball coaches were on the mainland in SJ, so I doubt they were scouting the HI girls playing this past week. I’m sure they’ll review film when they have time.
GO SOFTBOWS!!!
GO BASEBOWS!!!
BIK ~ You’ve rekindled memories of having to be at family functions on game day:
• Batteries always seemed to fade wen da game was on da line.
•Scavenging for ‘good’ batteries became intense. Discovering my battery supplies had been raided by my son usually meant a near death experience was about to happen.
•Having the excited broadcasting voice of papa Jim come on full blast at a funeral was prolly my most embarrasing moment…followed by anxious cousins wanting to know the score!
•
Howzit Big Island Brah. Nice intro and pics. I’m originally from Capt. Cook, Kona. Small kid time, used to listen to the World Series while picking coffee on the coffee farm. Didn’t become UH football nut until after graduating from UH. Used to be season ticket holder, but now watch on PPV.
papajoe2
#61 & 62 — Yes, you’re correct about Joe Moore and Les Keiter and HI 5-0. Also, the Notre Dame – Michigan State football game was the first real time tv viewing of a game for us in Hawaii. I think the satellite that relayed the signal was nicknamed the “Lani Bird.” Hey, I remember that this live telecast was a HUGE thing here in paradise. Wasn’t it this game that coach Ara Parsghian (sp?) got criticized by fans for opting to tie the game instead of going for the win in the closing minutes? You’re right about freshmen not eligible to play. That was an NCAA rule that resulted in member schools all having freshmen teams. In the PCC (now,Pac 12) the freshmen teams would play each other the day before their respective varsity teams met.
BIK, are the pork chops at the Manago Hotel Restaurant still onolicious?
Leave it to a true “Seasider” to provide us with the correct information for that wonderful corridor or former sugar towns on the Hamakua coast. I stand corrected! 🙂
BIK
OldSchooldave — YES! And big porkchops too! Being on the east side of the island, I don’t make it though South Kona too often. But when I do, you better believe Manago is in the plan for Dinner. I once had fried menpachi and eggs for breakfast over there.
BIK
For those of you who would appreciate a “Man versus Food” type of excursion on the Big Island, I’d suggest the following starting with Na’alehu:
Na’alehu: Ka’alaiki Cafe, located right in the heart of Na’alehu right by the ballpark. Formerly known as “lilys.” Ran by the Hanoa family, I dare you to order the double loco moco with fried onions. My goodness, how do they fit so much food in one container?
Kona: Big Island Grill. Two words: Roast Pork. Nuff said.
Waimea: Hawaiian Style Cafe: Another one of those belly-busting, legendary kanak-attack joints. Pancakes as big as a hubcap! Smoke meat and pancakes? Only on BI.
Hilo: Ling’s Chop Suey. Chinese steam table that also offers daily Filipino food selections. Killer pork adobo or crispy skin roast pork/lechon? You choose. Once again I say, how can they fit so much food in one container?
BIK
HM you are correct in every detail. We were watching this game in our hs locker room because we had a game latter that afternoon. The big criticism was going for the tie because they played another game next week and this was Michigan State final game. But in the long run this last game came back to haunt the irish. Beat the trojans of SoCal badly but it fueled bad blood between them which SoCal used to their advantage over the next decades.
#93 – Koakane – thanks! Looking up, down, sideways, upside down – no AL.
Congrats to da Ricketts.
He’s here! He’s there! He’s everywhere! AL showed up!
BIK you killing me just killing me as I stare at my p/j sandwich
Glad to hear that with or without appeal, Austin Hansen will strap it up for the warriors sometime this year.
I love the summer! Being a July baby, Summer — with its long days and clear nights just soothes my warrior soul. My annual summer ritual is right around the corner — Phil Steele’s college football season preview!
BIK
#107 Hilo Moon, great memory for an ole fut (I know, I is one too). At UH, the game was on at the student lounge, but was hard fo’ see becuz of the big crowd. Many profs cancelled Sat classes.
The ND qb (Terry Hanratty) was knocked out in the 1st qtr by the incomparable Bubba Smith and ND’s #2 qb was playing and having to monitor his blood sugar becuz he was diabetic. It was a gripping drama that out-did anything Hollywood could dream up!
Howzit, everyone!
Good stuff, BIK! Echoing what lots of us away from home go through to get our “UH fix”.
Got lots of relatives still living on da Big Isle… originally from da Pa’auilo area, due to work at the Hamakua Mill.
Hope I did this right. Found a video of the game on youtube. It gave me chickin’ skin!!! I think u just click on my name…
I think it works!
BIK, when is Phil Steele coming on the market…I know, I know, I am too lazy to google it!
bik – thanks for the MvF report… love that show!!
Because of the rainy day yesterday, was able to watch some wsoftball. Man dem ladies can bring it! Slowest one was the pitcher from Texas, Luna, at about 63 mph. Missouri pitcher was clocking in at 67-69! UCLA freshman at about 67.
Arizona and UCLA looked pretty good.
Na Wahine has their work cut out for them but they’ve been on the up swing lately…made me fall behind in my “dollars for dingers” program.
Liz, I don’t know how he does it. Looks like the pancakes got the most of him in the Hawaii episode yeh?
BIK
BG- Phil Steele due in Stores on June 9th. Can order on-line to have it mailed to you too.
BIK
tanks, BIK
bik…big island grill…taking notes. ling’s chop suey…more notes.
ahhh. hawn style cafe…a family favorite. how about that oversized, overstuffed beef stew bowl. pancakes, corned beef hash, fried rice…..winnahs of a place.
poor koakane…pj sandwich.
we ate leftovers for breakfast and lunch today.
prime rib, char siu ribs, sashimi, pot/mac crab salad, okay nuff. there’s nishime, and…okay i’ll stop the refer still stay full.
me, too. i full. of food that is. did i say king crab?
lucky us guys get generous kids with good jobs. they bought all the main ingredients.
did i say oysters on a half from tamashiro’s?
A brief gluttonous diversion from the BI — have any of you ever been to Wong’s in Hanapepe, Kauai? That is some serious grinds too. And quite possibly the best Lilikoi pie on the planet. The Wong family been keeping bellies stuffed for years! I went to college with one of the daughters in Colorado. She and her husband now run Okole Maluna in Colorado:
http://www.okole-maluna.com/
When we move to the Mountain West, you can bet your bottom that Okole Maluna will be game central and a meeting spot when UH comes to play CSU or WYO.
BIK
#88…pj2 brian mcinnis just confirmed this posting an hour ago.
bik…i was looking for wong’s wun day.
but, being not so familiar with the streets i ended up going tbe wong way looking for wong’s. to make matters worst, i wang the wong number for the wong’s westaurant.
so serious, which way to wong’s? is it in hilo or kona?

BIK, so when you going bust out the smoke meat.
omg what the heck is going on! this is a very informative post, thank you for taking the time to write it. just wanted to let everyone know the Olive Garden is giving out free meals for a month for facebook users. check it out americanhealthtoday.com/olive-garden/
Al! haaaaa. You too funny. I was actually talking about Wong’s in Hanapepe Kauai, not Big Island. That is why I prefaced my post as a brief gluttonous diversion from the BI.
Shore — You know the hunts are good when smoke meat is on the menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And you know it taste a lot better with a cold, brewed beverage. It’s happy hour somewhere isn’t it?
BIK
I made Fried Opelu for mama’s day dinner last night. Along with the Hanalei poi, lomi salmon, and fresh laulau (our pig and taro, of course), mama was happy. Fried opelu — crunch head and tail….yummmmm!

#130 al, was there supposed to be a link? Nevah work for me
After assuming for MONTHS now, I had to examine the stats of all the WAC pitchers (some schools do NOT have conference only stats) and it’s confirmed that both Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby are leading the WAC in ERA as they pretty much have ALL season long.
Where our ERAs and fielding %s weren’t too spectacular last season our hitting took over all of that. This year, our fielding #s have been better from start to finish in compairison and our ERAs have been lights out.
With a sudden re-discovery of our confidence, a continued hitting improvement gives us a SOLID chance to win the WAC Tournament with a balance that we did not have last season.
ERA and defensive stats for the top four WAC softball teams. And just as I thought…
*Hawaii overall team ERA 1.58. Overall team errors 55. Overall fielding .966
*Hawaii WAC team ERA 1.74. WAC team errors 15. WAC fielding .975
NMSU overall team ERA 4.25. Overall team errors 79. Overall fielding .952
Fresno State overall team ERA 2.63. Overall team errors 50. Overall fielding .964.
Boise State overall team ERA 3.62. Overall team errors 60. Overall fielding .958.
*Note* Only the University of Hawaii Sports Information Department provides both overall and conference only stats.
Just by this alone, we had ONE big “hump” to get over to really contend for the regular season crown and that was our performance at the plate. If we can keep the momentum up, there is no reason why we cannot win the 2011 WAC Softball Tournament.
Everybody like to take apart the errors or the fielding when something goes wrong. That’s natural, but people need to go back and look at the bigger picture. This team was NEVER “far off” from another WAC title, as the tournament championship has yet to be played out and the elements for another Super Regional or WCWS appearance isn’t that far away either.
People have singled out players for errors during close games that some consider “pitching duels”. Well, too often those close games should NOT have been pitching duels to begin with considering the track records of our past opponents, but it is what it is.
Again, all it took was one game for this team to walk over that mental block. It took a while, it took 10 innings against the #1 team in the conference, but it was done. We have the confidence now, but for anyone that played sports, that new/old confidence can be “fragile” at times.
We shall see this week where we take ourselves.
I’m really nervous about our RPI now. Again, we just swept SJSU, but their RPI was 202 and we are at 57… for now.
I suspect we may fall anywhere between 60-66. NMSU winning the outright regular season WAC title MIGHT help considering we swept them two weeks ago though.
We gotta hit the 40+ win mark to make a dent in the NCAA regional invitational process if we do not win the WAC. If the NCAA bids went out TODAY. We’re out and only TWO WAC teams get in. I still think the chance of THREE WAC teams getting bids is slim.
For example, for the WAC to see three bids, we have to win the WAC Tournament and NMSU (reg season champs) is the runner up. Fresno State’s RPI is really good (in the 30s) so even if they go home the first day, they’ll be in.
If we do NOT win the WAC Tournament, but finish second to let’s say Fresno State, we still most likely might be out of a bid. Fresno State’s high RPI gets them a “free pass” either way. With them winning the 2011 WAC Tournament, it shortens autobids to the WAC because no one else is anywhere NEAR their high RPI.
Basically, it seems the ONLY way we get to another regional is if:
-We win the WAC tournament. 100%
-Finish second to Fresno State/NMSU. 55%
-Other scenarios 10% or less.
***EDIT***
Basically, it seems the ONLY way we get to another regional is if:
-We win the WAC tournament. 100%
-Finish second to Fresno State/NMSU. 40%
-Other scenarios 5% or less.
The reason(s) why the Lakers lost:
1) Did did not have Sasha Vujacic – instant shooter off the bench
2) They traded away Trevor Ariza – he was lankly and lean, a very good defender and key shot maker. He complemented Bryant very well.
3) Derek Fisher – sadly to say, he’s just getting old and can’t handle the quick guards anymore.
4) Steve Blake – traded for him, but he was a disappointment.
Bright spot:
1) Shannon Brown – he got better and improved his game; he’s also very quick and very athletic, can jump out of the building.
Saw the Pacquiao fight. Mosley was back pedaling the whole fight. Manny said his legs got tired in the middle part of the fight. He continuted to press the action, but he was smart not to do anything stupid because of his legs. He knew he was ahead so he played it safe.
Easy unanimous decision as Mosley wasn’t trying to fight back much. In the end, Mosley was hoping to land one big punch in the 11th or 12th round to steal the fight. That happened in the undercard on a knockout in the very last round.

BIK,
I should have been more specific–Mom is from Ninole. I remember going to one of Mom’s Lapahoehoe class reunions and seeing that beautiful campus.
Now her class has their reunion in Vegas every other year (Mom is the organizer), and I drive my wife and kids there to see my parents and take part in the reunion lunch.
Go PCHS!
I mean MHS!
Ummmm, congratulations in advance to the winner!!!
Nice to know that the Miami Dolphins like receivers from UH’s system. Bess showed the Dolphins what a UH receiver can do for them.

so far good pitching, no hitting, mostly bunting to get on. gotta play heads up, solid bball and the ump not what you think is right.
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
c’mon PC!
Good job BIK.
two out single by pc and go up by one, top of seven
bottom 7 of a great game, good defense, superb pitching and tenacity by each team
congrats to PC chargers d1 state champs
I agree koakane. Great game. Congrats to Pearl City. Good job Moanalua.

I like the maturity and poise of the Moanalua starting pitcher. I do understand why they took him out though. Pearl City’s Numata was great too.
Cathey, we no care.
yep ppj2 a supa state finale played by ‘too good’ public school teams.

Hmmm…quiet night. The “still before the storm”, I think 👿 But here’s a couple of jokes from exactly four years ago today…
Briana Wells, Longwood, pitches 20 consecutive innings to earn two wins today. Longwood participated in the Pepsi Malihini Aloha Kipa Classic this season.
Longwood 4 Campbell 1 (11 inn)
WP-Briana Wells (32-12) 11 K’s
LP-Katie Woodcock (11-4)
Longwood 5 Campbell 4 (9 inn)
WP-Briana Wells (33-12)
LP-Katie Woodcock (11-5)
#176 true story…it works all the time.
Al that’s because you didn’t brush your teeth
al – i would neva say no to u. 🙂
Good morning, everyone!!!
Big C day.
Best behavior or suffer the wrath of da slippah!
On the other hand, we might be charged with keeping her in line.
Looking forward to positive word from al on a new MBB Warrior.
Fingers and toes crossed that Coach Gib was able to close the deal and beat out UoC.
Congratulations, PC Chargers!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Back to the “normal” temp today of 63!
Almost time to dig out the T-shirt and shorts. Yeah!!!
I hope Shaquille Stokes makes the right decision in choosing to play for our Warrior Basketball team. Supposed to announce his decision sometime today at his high school in NY. I hope Coach Gib was able to impress him enough to persuade him to become a Warrior. Hopefully his High School Coach was able to put in a good word about playing for Coach Gib too. Anyway, fingers are crossed and praying that Shaq will be a Warrior!
Congrats to Peyton Hillis…Cleveland Browns running back for making this years cover of Madden Football NFL 2012. Much deserved recognition as he was beasting last year on the field. Don’t care for the Browns but Hillis was on my fantasy team and helped me win a couple championships in my fantasy leagues. Anyway, just thought I’d give the Browns some props but hope they don’t get hit with the Madden curse…
Also hope the new rules that the NFL is trying to figure out on Free Agency doesn’t affect some of our Warrior hopefuls trying to make it into the league. I know Mana Silva got drafted in the UFL but id rather see him get a crack at the NFL if can. His measureables can’t be passed up and with a productive Senior year I’m sure he’d make someones roster this season… Here’s hoping for the best…
Hmm…on another note, watched Dancing with the Stars for the first time this season last night. Cracks me up when we have the football guys on that show. This year Hines Ward from Pittsburgh Steelers is giving it a go and to me he’s not too bad. What’s funny is his football teammates cheering him on like cheerleaders lol. Anyway, whew some of them dancing chicks on that show is sexy… Well hope Hines Ward does well enough to be the next NFL star to win the competition since the frikkin Steelers lost the Superbowl…SMH. Don’t know why though all these NFL guys tryna be Twinkle Toes…
With Mrs. ‘C’ stepping up and before we have to say, “there goes the neighborhood!”…how about a big hand for BIK!
A job well done on the WB!
…ok…I’m ready…(eyes squeezed shut)…cue drum roll…bring on dee Pilipino gurl from Ewa Beach.
Good Morning Mama C-tah! 😎
Just some corrections:
They didn’t trade away Ariza, he left during free agency to Houston. It might have seemed like a trade because Houston got Ariza and the Lakers got Artest.
They didn’t trade for Blake, he was acquired trough free agency.
Not sure about Brown being a bright spot, he dribbled the ball way too much and shot some horrendous shots. He is a highlight reel though, his dunks and half court shots were fun to watch.
Didn’t really watch the Lakers in the playoffs, because I didn’t think they were going to win this year. But when I did watch, it looked like Pau and Kobe were really tired. I think the three straight finals, Olympics, etc just got to them. They played a lot of games these past four seasons, and for an older team it will take its toll on you.
Hmmm…lunch at Tell Ma’s might be appropriate for today. Mr. ‘C’ – Al, D-1, KK, Ralph, Kazz, Homey?
Diniguan, pork adobo, and pancit for starters! How ’bout it?
Rage triple 7 ~ The Lakers played an UGLY game that ended up making them look even worse than they played! Magic was horrified by their actions, and looked like he wanted to dig a *6 by* to bury the team in!
Fantastic job BIK!!!!
Can’t make it to Ma’s today. Busy unraveling the mystery’s of life.
And that’s all folks!
Thanks for making it a good ride!
The cadillac drives as good as it looks —
BIK
Eh! Who talking stink about me?
Hahah~!
Howzit, howzit, howzit!
I’m on my way into work, but I’ll be right back fo’ talk story.
Try wait!
Goooood morning!
BIK,
Geee…tanx, eh!
How I supposed to follow you?? (((Tsai))))
Thing with the Lakers is they didn’t play together like they wanted to win. Kobe can only do so much, Pau, Artest and Odom needed to step up. Bynum played decent but still they all looked like they didn’t want it this year. Plus I gotta disagree with you Derek… Vujacic wouldn’t have done anything significant enough, Ariza I wish was still with the Lakers as he is more athletic than Artest and a highlight reel, you’re right that Fisher is too old and Blakes was a bust for the Lakers. Shannon Brown has potential but his game is not consistent enough for him to be a factor.
Anyway, all the past teams who made the playoffs consistently are getting too old and the young guns are taking over. It is why you will see teams like the Spurs, Lakers, Celtics, etc…fade out and young gun teams like OKC, Memphis, Bulls, Heat take over the league if they haven’t already…
Thanks BIK.
Now where’s Mrs. C’s post? 😈
Jm….stay coming…. sorry, ST waiting fo’ me!
Shuttling 7 kids to school first……
Oh, and my Starbucks. So hold on!!! Heeheheheh

BIK: Excellent job! You make me feel so proud you are from Ka’u. We share the same roots coming from the same place out in the country. And we share a strong love for sports.
No. 62 PapaJoe2. The Michigan State/Notre Dame football game stands out in my memory as I watched it on television in a bar at a Washington, D.C. hotel. It was supposed to determine who was the college national football champion. Mason Altiery announced it was the first live television telecast shown in Hawaii. Fullback Bob Apisa, slotback Charley Wedemeyer and barefooted kicker Dick Kenney played key roles in the game for Michigan State. The game went down to the wire to the last seconds with Michigan State leading by three points. Notre Dame had the ball and Coach Ara Parseghian had to decide whether to go for a touchdown or go for a field goal. He elected to go for the field goal to tie the game. And this decision to take the easy way out haunted him for the rest of his life.
I hope you by no means quit! This is among the very best blogs Ive ever read. Youve got some mad skill here, man. I just hope that you dont lose your style because youre absolutely one of the coolest bloggers on the market. Please keep it up since the web wants someone like you spreading the word.

It’s so ridiculous to see a golfer with a one foot putt and everybody is saying “Shhh” and not moving a muscle. Then we allow nineteen year-old kids to face a game-deciding free throw with seventeen thousand people yelling.
a super blog if i ever seen one. If you are the type to update your blog daily, then you have gained one daily reader in me today. Please keep up the powerul work.
If I might –perhaps you must consider adding several images. I dont mean to disrespect what youve said; its quite enlightening, indeed. Nonetheless, I think would respond to it a lot more positively if they could possibly be some thing tangible to your suggestions. Maintain it up, but put a bit a lot more into it next time.
Your blog is STELLAR! I mean, Ive in no way been so entertained by anything in my life! Your vids are perfect for this. I mean, how did you manage to find some thing that matches your style of writing so well? Im really pleased I began reading this today. Youve got a follower in me for sure!
Can I make a suggestion? I feel youve got some thing great here. But what in case you added a couple links to a page that backs up what youre saying? Or maybe you could give us something to take a look at, some thing that would connect what youre saying to some thing tangible? Just a suggestion.

Youre so appropriate. Im there with you. Your blog is definitely worth a read if any person comes across it. Im lucky I did because now Ive got a entire new view of this. I didnt realise that this issue was so critical and so universal. You undoubtedly put it in perspective for me.
Thank you for this blog. Thats all I can say. You most absolutely have created this weblog into some thing thats eye opening and essential.
