Safety signs with UH

Brandon “Taz”  Leslie, a safety who was at Georgia Tech for two years, has signed a letter of intent with the Warriors. Leslie said he faxed a copy of the commitment to UH yesterday. The NCAA recognizes a faxed copy as a binding agreement.

Leslie said he is 6 feet 1 and 208 pounds, and is capable of running 40 yards in 4.5 seconds.

He signed with Georgia Tech in February 2008, turning down offers from Stanford, Washington and Nebraska. He redshirted that year, and played in 2009 under Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson, a former UH offensive coordinator.

Leslie said he left because of “situations back home.” The Fresno native then enrolled at the College of Sequoias .

Leslie said he received offers  from Arizona, Iowa State and Nevada. But as a Warrior fan “since high school,” said Leslie, a graduate of Edison High, it was an easy choice to pick UH. He did not take an official trip to UH. But a few years ago, he visited his aunt, who lived in Hawaii for eight years. He spent the time island-hopping. “I loved it,” Leslie said.

Leslie said he will enroll at UH in June. He will have two years to play two seasons.

The Warriors had saved a scholarship in case a highly regarded prospect became available. Leslie’s commitment did not replace any of the pledges from signing day two weeks ago.

Kylie Nakamine, a senior point guard at Mira Costa High School, is averaging 14.8 points, 4.3 rebounds. 3.1 assists and 4.9 steals a game and 93.4% FT, but she doesn’t want to play college basketball. 5 steals a game!

Maybe coach Dana can convince her to come to UH.

Nakamine said she is not planning on playing basketball at the collegiate level.

She has a sister, Shannon, who played basketball at Venice and who lives in Seattle. Nakamine is strongly considering attending Gonzaga University in Washington, where she has already been accepted, and will weigh her UC and CSU options.

    re: Wahine sb this weekend.

Last year, “Hawaii athletics” did not “live stat” any away games during the regular season. It was available only during the NCAA tournament. Results of the away game were available 2-3 hrs. after completion. For those who want to follow or get updates this weekend, this is the best info I have so far and the price is right “FREE”.

    1. Google “Louisville Slugger Desert Classic 2011”

    2. Look for LSDC 2011 Official Athletic Site.(It should be the first one listed.)

    3. Click that site.
    *****17 teams will appear*****

    4. Find UH opponent.

    5. Click their “team page”
*****Opponents sb web site will appear*****

    6. Click “result/schedule”

4 of 5 UH opponents will have “Game Tracker”. Univ. of Oregon has “live stats”. Above their schedule is a green square box with a count down of their next game. Click “stats”.

This is the schedule for Wahine sb this weekend. Starting times are HST and the second team listed is home team.

    Friday(2/18)
    9:15 a.m. Utah vs UH
11:30 a.m. UH vs Long Beach St.

    Saturday(2/19)
    7:00 a.m. UH vs Oregon
    11:30 a.m. Stanford vs UH

    Sunday(2/20)
    9:15 a.m. Cal state-Northridge vs UH

  33. G (China) February 15, 2011 7:51 am

If Miah can hit some three’s, you got the potential of a nice inside outside game. Can’t say enough of how Miah is playing though. And for Vander, if he keeps on going towards the basket and limit the number of moves, he’ll be more efficient and be more of a beast than he is now.

  49. kamaile February 15, 2011 9:24 am

What’s happened to johnson’s 3pt. shot? Wiseman is a great defender and hustles his butt off but, is a big time liability on offense because he has no shot and defenders slack way off of him. We’re playing 4 on 5 on offense when wiseman is in there. Needs to develop his shot. Doesn’t know what to do with the ball when he recieves it wide open on the wing. Miah is awesome. Wait when his 3pt. shot starts dropping. oh my gosh! Likes to try and throw the ball over the top of defenders when he is only 5’7. Not in high school anymore. No can. Even when he jumps. Most exciting player in quite some time.

  50. SteveM February 15, 2011 9:28 am

    Good morning everyone!

ST — in oceanography, I learned about underwater topology, current patterns, and that waves approaching land will crest and break when the water depth is 1.7 times it’s wave height. Ahhh, that’s all I remember since I was interested in surfology at the time. 🙂

  51. jm2375 February 15, 2011 9:31 am

What’s with Joston Thomas? Is his decreased playing time because he’s not playing well or because others are playing better? His production has certainly decreased since the beginning of the season.

  52. NorthShoreFan February 15, 2011 9:39 am

Me thinks Joston needs to play under control. He gets too hyped and commits bad fouls sometimes. No question he is the enforcer when he is in there but once her gets himself playing with some control and smarts he will be awesome.

Adrian Klemm sure aims high in recruiting. Now he’s going after USC commit Jordan Payton, a WR that some services say may be the #1 recruit in California. Despite being a USC commit and having offers from basically the entire Pac-10, LSU, and others, Klemm somehow convinced Payton to pay his own way to visit SMU.

  61. hawaiiansun February 15, 2011 10:34 am

Miah is an amazing athlete who transformed from the grid to hardwood in credible fashion and window, despite a three year estrangment from organized basketball and with little prep time. Indeed, one of the sweet storylines for UH in 2010-’11. A compelling individual accomplishment with so much chicken-skin. I can hardly wait to watch Miah hauling in passes from the slot in the fall.
Best wishes to the Ostrowski ohana and mahalo for your warrior.

I noticed that last night the Rainbow Warriors had “only” 11 turnovers. Although zero turnovers are the magic number, but unrealistic, it was way better than in the beginning of the season when the RW had games with over 20 turnovers. Is Miah the reason. I think he plays a big part in it. When Bobby Miles went in the game in the beginning of the 2nd half, he looked lost out there. Bobby, just relax. You will be a big part of the team as you develop in the coming years. Good win last night.

  67. hawaiiansun February 15, 2011 11:21 am

Wahine have buku opportunity to rise in rankings prior to conference play: we play top-20 teams, Oregon, Stanford, OKL, NEB, BYU and CALIF, plus four probable games against nationally respected Fresno State–all on the ladydawg homefield.
Beating PAC 10 teams is priority–nine of last ten D1 NCAA softball champs have come from this conference. Five in-a-row.
Hawai’i wont host a region anyway, so we want to win big and avoid the same #1 bracket, we were selected to play in last season. Making the Regionals is always on our wish list….playing in the same bracket as the numero uno is NOT.

  68. al February 15, 2011 11:24 am

joston thomas…i love this kid. he plays with passion. he is still learning what he can and cannot do in d1. you almost have to treat him along with the true freshmen as well joachim the dream as first time d1 players.

    and this includes miah.

great job by the coaches with all these d1 rookies.

joston thomas, miah ostrowski, vander joachim, bo barnes, bobby miles, trevor wiseman, and dominick brumfield are all getting their feet wet at the same time.

when you realize this you understand how good a job each player and coach has done thus far. to realize that it will only get better is a sight to behold.

  69. papajoe2 February 15, 2011 11:24 am

Delta and American Airlines just increased the fares to $120 round trip on trips over 1,500 miles. That means us as anytime we board the plene for the mainland is over that figure. Plus, Obama would pass on airport renovations on to the consumers. That’s us again. I know it would impact UH sports negatively, not just cost more for the team’s travel to games, and supplement the visiting opponents, but also for the mainland players to go home during spring, summer and winter breaks. On the bright side, maybe the local players’ added expenses would keep them home. Would cost plenty for not only them, but for their family to go there to see them play. Wishful thinking anyway.

  70. al February 15, 2011 11:26 am

anyone who has played organized sports will understand that there are levels of play. with each level or tier that you move up to the game gets more physical, faster, skillful, and requires a better understanding of the game that you play.

it is why, for example, major league baseball starts off with rookie leagues, a, aa, aaa, and then the big show.

  71. papajoe2 February 15, 2011 11:27 am

#70 we can board the plene and plane too. bwhahaha

#69 al. Sometimes we forget that all of those players you mentioned are playing D1 basketball for the first time. The UH R Warriors are almost comprised totally of first year players. Plus Johnson and Amis didn’t play last year. We were told that they would get better as they develop during the course of the year, but watching them play and expecting them to win all of their games is unrealistic. I guess that is why they were predicted to finish last in the WAC in most polls. Good for the fans and players to see them improving as the season progresses. And they are moving on up, more than predicted. They’re not in last. The best is yet to come.

  78. Ralph February 15, 2011 11:43 am

Pac 10, SEC and Big 12 fill the softball rankings and a good number of them at the end of the season are selected for regional play and as hosts. When we get a chance to play them, we got to beat them.

First up, the Pac 10 in LV, Oregon and Stanford. Next week, the Big 12, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

at the end of preseason we get California and BYU at home.

Hopefully Na Wahine will manage at least a 4-2 or better record against these softball powers. Four of these teams are currently ranked in ESPN and USA Today.

Speaking of the SMU recruiting class and its top rating.
If you’ve seen the 30 by 30 series on ESPN, check the one on SMU and how they earned the death penalty. Them good ‘ole boys with buckets of cash got whoever they wanted for SMU.
Even Eric Dickerson will not talk about how he switched from signing with Texas A&M and went to SMU.
Obviously seems like he got a briefcase of full of cash.
Now I’m not saying SMU still does that. Certainly they ain’t as blatant about it if they be doing it.
But I’m sure there are still a lot of rich boys in Texas willing to support their school. By any means necessary.
    Just saying.

    Is it football season yet?

  86. jm2375 February 15, 2011 3:06 pm

Pauley Pavilion renovations. Good thing UH plays UCLA here next year. 😀

Historic Pauley Pavilion will be closed on April 1 as it undergoes $136 million in renovations and won’t be reopened until the 2012-13 season.

The women’s basketball team, men’s and women’s volleyball teams and the gymnastics squad will most likely compete next season in the John Wooden recreation center.

    #89

One of my friends knew the SMU player who transferred to UH after they got the death penalty. He told my friend he was receiving a thousand dollars a week from SMU boosters. Another person I know was going to UCLA over thirty five years ago a roomed with a third string defense back. Every Sunday after the game his room mate would go down to the football field and get $500 from a booster. The non-BCS conference teams are small time when it comes to this type of activity and will remain small time until the BCS conferences back fairness in recruiting. Of course this will never happen, so life goes on……

D1 12500 fans watched K State take down KU for the 3 time in 45 games. I can’t believe we haven’t played better in the past and kept the won/loss at 50%. Back in the day when Tex Winter coached KSU we battled KU even but that was decades ago. 🙂 Good coaching helps.

  136. Ralph February 15, 2011 6:18 pm

yup, coach Ray is a nice guy, he served the AYSO community many, many years, and I think he is geared to community, every body plays mindset. That being said, the HS will always struggle in State Championship play without the “killer instinct” where you play the best and rest the others.

  137. Ralph February 15, 2011 6:20 pm

    Re: #106
Makes sense to me, since this is a high volume and unmoderated blog. “Unmoderated” means that the comments will post without first being reviewed and approved by a warm body.

As such, SPAM will get through since no one reads/approves it first. SPAM will always get through… think of the people who would go out of business if there were no spam or viruses getting through.

The blog would lose a lot of momentum and spontaneity if it was required to be moderated. So I agree it is a good move to keep The Warrior Beat separate.

Now, remember who first suggested the gardener and a FLIP video camera…? 🙂

    Hey, Rage 777,

Nakamine was misquoted in the newspaper article. She does want to play in college and is considering offers she has been receiving from interested colleges. If UH is interested, let the coach know that Nakamine is unsigned. I have seen her play and she is an excellent player. This past summer I watched her play against Maiki Viela of Lahainaluna, and Nakamine outplayed Viela big time.

    Rage 777 wrote:

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  331. hisse senedi March 5, 2011 4:46 pm

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

One thing I want to say is car insurance termination is a hated experience and if you’re doing the suitable things as a driver you simply won’t get one. Lots of people do obtain notice that they’ve been officially dumped by their own insurance company and many have to scramble to get further insurance after having a cancellation. Low-priced auto insurance rates are often hard to get after having a cancellation. Knowing the main reasons for auto insurance cancellation can help people prevent losing one of the most essential privileges readily available. Thanks for the concepts shared via your blog.

Yet another thing I would like to convey is that as an alternative to trying to fit all your online degree training on days that you finish off work (considering that people are tired when they get back), try to receive most of your instructional classes on the weekends and only a few courses for weekdays, even if it means a little time away from your saturday and sunday. This pays off because on the weekends, you will be more rested in addition to concentrated upon school work. Many thanks for the different guidelines I have discovered from your weblog.

These days of austerity as well as relative stress and anxiety about incurring debt, lots of people balk resistant to the idea of utilizing a credit card to make acquisition of merchandise and also pay for any gift giving occasion, preferring, instead only to rely on the actual tried and trusted procedure for making payment – cash. However, in case you have the cash on hand to make the purchase in full, then, paradoxically, that’s the best time for them to use the cards for several reasons.
