Back to work
Although classes don’t start for another week, furlough-based UH reopens today. It’s also back to work for the UH football coaches, who were given a week’s vacation between Christmas and the new year. And, no, recruiting was not hurt during that time. It was a dead period.

Former Warriors Alex Green and Greg Salas begin workouts today at the Athletes’ Performance facility in Carson, Calif.
* * * * * *
Word on the boulevard is defensive lineman Josh Manupuna, who played well in last year’s spring practice, is on track to returning to the Warriors this summer. But it does not appear that Solomon Koehler will join the Warriors. Koehler left Arizona last year and was attending community college in Hawaii.

Avis has selected LizKauai as the winner of the Mouse Davis autographed card. I definitely will be heading to the post office today.

watchin da “new” coaches 3 years ago, remembrin all who went to da clinic in da auditorium, coaches introduced 1×1, we all had hopes an aspirations fo Florida … seeing Coaches Rolo and Smith… I had peelinz den too.
dis i no fo a fakkk! wen we race, we race against time…. newbies, old timers alike. no mo contact, but still get peelinz. das wat a coach gotta do, inspire da peelinz. Abe gonna win his job in da trenches. but first, da THICK part is all on him. not easy fo be THICK. cannot just hang by da feedbag. and lift. gotta have da MINE, MINE, MIND.

Glad you got home safely at 20 must have been a shock, looks like you sent some of the flow into LV. Plz keep the black ice in PNW.
Got up this morning and found 1-2inches of snow on the ground with possibility of more later. Sky looks heavy with moisture – will check out the neighborhood when we take our walk – wonder what the strip looks like?
Warrior time – 2011 season starts today
702WF . . .
Hey, no problem! I like to share.
Folks there probably are not very used to driving on that stuff — must be “exciting”.
ST
short off topic story. but very relevant.
three years ago, a Sunday in March, on Kauai. group of Kauai guys, racing 55s. the year before, they neva go States cuz one ah dem wuz sick. but they went Liliuo race and came in second. they had just finished their fundraiser at the beach, and were relaxing pau hana kine. so all drinking– their beer, and an Hilo started drinking the bottle vodka he was supposed to take back to Hilo, drank da bottle. Hilo was supposed to catch da 2 oclock. an as Hilo was going to da car he said to da Kauai guys
“hey you guys, you neva go States las year, how come?”
and somebody said to him “hey hey hey”
and he said “i stay lookin at you, an you all short, no mo enuf meat”
and Hilo started doing 1 hand pushups..
da wife took him into da car to get away from the beatin doze buggaz was flashin wit dare eyes. slept all da way to Hilo, even wit change flights in Hnl.
flash foward to August. States in Maui. da Kauai gang came lookin for da nemesis. small kine talkin, but dare eyes were still da same. sumtin to prove, to demselves, to da world.
da came in second, by less den half a second.
moral ah da story: gotta motivate da troops if you want a result larger dan da sum ah da individuals.
like Abe. dat bugga is THICK! kinda short, but THICK! i saw a smaller overall Dline hold dare own against Wisconsin. so I know we can. and get planny time for 2012 prep fo USC.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
Gratz Liz!
wafan,
At the best of time and in good weather, drivers here are busy on their cell – easy to spock since driver normally drifts left/right and makes sudden corrections. Imagine what it’s like in the snow and using cell. That’s why staying home and walking in the area to stay safe. Stay safe yourself.
Speedy recovery to those who were in the multi car accident in Kunia Sat. and condolences to the Parsons family.
maybe Mouse like my autograph? 😀
somebody should tell da Mouse dat da old bugga at Penn State is much much olda, an he still having fun even when it hurts.
ifn Mouse wants my autograph, he can just post here
“I wanna be like da motivatah!”
course, an easier way to get my auto is fo him to just tell Coach Mack, “I’ll stick around and help out one mo time.”
thank you Mr. Davis.
okay, gotta make work time.
laters Gangeez!
hi ho esme woosshhhhhhhhh…………
Bhf2, Warriors need you and Pride to be da team pregame motivators.

Good morning!
Congrats to MsLiz!
Kekoa,

Congratulations, Liz!
Whoo-hoo!!!

Good morning everyone!
Congrats Liz, and thanks for posting the URL to watch last night’s “Undercover Boss” on NCL.
Put up my 2011 calendar last night and wrote my various long range doctor appointments. Wish I could use less ink.
Good morning Tsaikos!!
Well, this year started off right … I forgot to set my alarm and overslept an hour and a half. 😈
Congrats Liz!
GO WAHINE! GO WARRIORS!
Happy New Year Tsaikos!!
Hope everyone had fun and safe celebrations.
in my younger days it was impossible to have fun and still be safe.
is it too late for mack to get some local boys?
al
are you suggesting it’s too late? hope not.
Gratz, Liz!!!
al . . .
I sure hope not.
Yeah, classmate! We were indestructible, no warning labels on everything, and penicillin cured everything. I was in a human relations-type class on personality surveys once and they said most surveys had a “macho” adjustment for those who were teens in the i960″s. 🙂
I said it before, a big island recruit with good genes is headed to UH. I don’t know if he is on scholarship or will gray shirt or even walk on.
The only local guy(s) that have committed so far, not including grayshirts, are Ben Dew and Thor Salanoa. Dew is not really local, he’s from New Zealand, but played at Word of Life. Is he a project? Not much film on the guy. Salanoa still needs some work before he can enroll in school. He’s a transfer, and at this point he’s an question mark if he can make a big impact. I hope so. As far a incoming freshmen, we have had nothing, NADA. It’s pretty sad at this point, in fact I would say it’s dismal. The shellacking at the hands of Tulsa on Xmas Eve didn’t help. We won’t finish in the Top 25 and I would be surprised if we even get some votes. There are a lot of questions going into next season. Some of them are the talent level, the coaching level, the recruiting level and so on. If Mack and the coaches do the same things, we will get the same results and even take a step back. We have to do new things and find roles for players that do things well and use them in certan situations.
As I see it here are just some of the problems we have that need to be addressed:
1) KickOffs – we need to find somebody who can kick it out of the end zone.
2) KickOff returns and Punt Returns-either the blocking schemes are not good or we need to find a breakaway returner. Can be solved with better coaching and recruiting. If not, we won’t improve and we were one of the worst in the country.
3) Offensive line – I think the OL gave up too many sacks. Also, Moniz could have helped by getting rid of the ball quicker. Needing to replace 4 starters is not a bad thing if we have some good players in the program. Lefiti should be the starter at center, Leonard is starting caliber, Hansen should be back. There are others who will have their chance to step up and develop the depth. We have to run the ball better, especailly when we have to rush it in the red zone.
4) Sacks – we had 26 sacks in 14 games. I think that’s too low. The goal is get at least 3 to 4 sacks per game. Aranda has to find a scheme that will pressure the QB better, including safety blitzes and better techniques by the defensive linemen.
5) Offensive play calling – I think we need to run plays that utilize a man in motion. This helps to freeze the linebackers and keeps the DBs guessing and gives the QB more time to throw or either run the ball. In certain situations, use the wildcat offense. Call the plays quicker. I don’t like having the QB always going to the sideline to get the plays and then running back to the huddle. Too much wasted energy.
We can keep going on and on, but we have lots of time. If I am stirring the pot, so be it.
That’s the intent and I’m all for more discussion and listen to good ideas. Hopefullly, the coaches will take the criticism constructively. But, bottom line, our goals are to get to the Top 25 and move up the ladder so I think the fans feel that the TEAM have to step up and improve. The expectations are high.
Al, doesn’t look like any holy grail this year.
Congratulations LizK! 🙂
Drive safely in the PNW
…and Vegas! 😕
Speaking of the figurative holy grail…
True frosh, 6’4″ Rob Bolden is leaving Penn State and seeking to play for another FBS team.
Bolden has 4 to play 3.
Bolden started eight games this season for the Nittany Lions and became the first true freshman to start a season opener for Penn State in 100 years. But he missed a game after suffering a concussion Oct. 23 against Minnesota and then lost the starting job to sophomore Matt McGloin down the stretch……is Manoa interested?
Need more cover speed at the Corners to pull that off.
Repeating the wish for two “Mouton clones”
Derek . . . agree with you on the Special Teams and defensive pressure points. It seemed like this year, the punt returners never really had time to return much. The punting team was always there waiting for the returner to catch the ball. And defensively, it seemed like we hardly blitzed. I thought our defense was solid this year, especially in regards to turnovers, but I would like to see more pressure and excitement at the line of scrimmage.
There are missing parts in MAC’s staff, that’s for sure. The results point out our shortcomings against quality teams. No finger pointing neccessary, the CEO must shoulder the blame or should in any other world where compensation is in the 7 digits… The problem at Manoa is an issue endemic to Hawai’i, that is, management positions are seen as entitlement, not something temporal that must be earned on merit in order to continue.
What seeds we lay down currently will impact our program for another 5 years. In any athletic program, reconstruction is indeed a difficult task.
Look at the Michigan football program floundering in sub par performance, notwithstanding deep pockets. For programs like Hawai’i, who operate on the margin, bad selections or failure to take action can drag our program to the bottom fast. Recovery may be slow at best…or never, at worst.
Time to sharpen the pencil Jimbo and place a heavy boot where it is needed.
Coach Rolo:
motion, motion, motion – use all the motion plays in your play book – if no more, go find some and add them to your book.
this will allow the QB greater flexibility to freeze defenses, allow routes to mature, and get a better mix of plays – if not, you become very predictable and increase the chance of losing a game.
in the Hawaii Bowl, I believe you called only 1 “motion” play with Green running out for a flair pass – other wise it was same oh, same oh!
al: #35 —
are you telling us nicely that UH will not secure commitments from any of the “blue chip” local boys?
did the little birdie visit you this New Year’s weekend with the bad news?
50
We ended with a 10-4 record and a WAC co-championship after we were forecasted to end up somewhere in the bottom of the pack. Has anyone asked why we were expected to end poorly in the standings by the media and coaches poll? Our talent level of course. Coach Mack had the team overachieve and people are disappointed? Mack knows he needs to up the level of talent on this team and the coaches are working on this as we speak. The program is moving in the right direction, let’s support the coaches and players and not be a road block to this progress.
Personally, I dont see ‘project-players’ or recruits who have not played in two years as front page stuff. Yikes! Yet, these types continue to get hyped in our current class. Thus far, I see one DB from the NW that is worthy and one JUCO WR with go. We have a bunch of projects on the grayshirt list that are bland.
Did I miss anyone?
Take a look at our 2012 competitiors–AFA, SDSU, BSU, FSU, NEV and CSU. It’s all in black n white….
There are many former coaches that post here.
Happy New Year!
derek…still get chance on the holy grail.
however, we have pressing needs for linemen and db’s. always need an abundance these positions they make up for over 59 % of the starting 22. not to mention that many db’s are on special teams as well as linemen.
I suspect Rod Tam will not be eating out much this year.
In MAC’s own words, “You are judged by the last game you played”.
Too bad there is a big time gap between the last game and the next game. Not very good last games for the last 4 seasons. But that’s ok, we can all look forward to next season and the last game.
JJ used motion very little and opined when he did it was to check coverage.
teams use motion currently to reset formations for certain packages and counter defenses. BSU uses it alot.
ahouse…no. just saying that we need to step it up on the local kids. we have none really unless you want to adopt ben “mountain” dew.
we are in the running for several of the top guys, but, we need to do the full court press yesterday. in a blink of an eye they will all disappear from the horizon.
one coach kept after it, the local boy recruits, bending the ear of the main guy. they were only interested in fulfilling the skill guys at first. the game is won in the trenches, yah, an old cliche’ but one so true. we need the local boys to occupy the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. not too many available this year so they really got to get in the homes of these young men as soon as possible.
i saw every game this year in person at the aloha stadium and on the tube for away games. we motion almost 50% of the time. typically the slotback is in motion. just so we know if they are in “man” or not, this determines the “choice route” for a particular formation.
i am not sure if we (ahouse and i) are on the same page when you refer to motion?
i also don’t understand why we are questioning our offense?
weren’t we in the top five total offenses again?
back in the glory days of dick tomey (i mean this respectfully), our offenses barely got up to 300 yards per game. in his offensive scheme and total game plan that was successful. his offense was on the conservative side by design. all he wanted was a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter.
hey, it worked he turned the program around to compete at the d1 level.
then wags took over and brought in the spread option with paul johnson. offense became king.
no comment on the von appen period.
can’t compare our current numbers and points to any of those two eras. yet, we are not satisfied if we don’t have 500 yards and 50 points these days.
this year the defense did not rest. in fact, the defense rose to the occasion and for the most part did a much better job than in years past. this led to lopsided scores quite often.
back to work on mondays are never fun, but add in a 3 day weekend and after new years? even harder.
many who chastise moniz are quick to forget that…
one, he almost pulled out a victory over usc. we were outscored.
two, beating army, thanks to umu’s heroics in getting the ball back, he marched us down the field in less than two minutes to beat army and virtually save the season.
three/four, beating fresno st and nevada were huge wins that many thought would never happen.
so we lose to two pac10 teams, boise st, and tulsa.
surely we could have beaten at least two of them. but, we didn’t take care of the little things. perhaps we thought we weren’t good enough to compete against some of them or took for granted that we would cake walk over them. in either case, lessons learned the hard way.
tulsa and usc exposed our achilles heel on defense…a lack of foot speed.
colorado and boise st out thunk us if you ask me. they took us out of the game early. colorado with the copy cat use of the no huddle offense and boise state by out preparing us with preciseness aided by the ten days of preparation.
there’s nothing wrong with the run n shoot, 4 wide offense. it is still very effective and i do like the way rolo/mouse keep tweeking it.
the rns aka 4 wide has become so popular that nearly every nfl team employs some type of this offense today. soon, yah pretty, soon guys like colt brennan, timmy chang, rolo, harrell, and the like will no longer be called system qb’s because this may be the system of the pro’s.
finally, i always be a fan of june jones. the guy is football genius. every move he made here was by purpose and well thought out.
i remember when he started commercializing our product, the warriors, many did not agree. but, look at it now.
i am a believer of if it’s not broken don’t fix it, therefore, i was upset when we first went away with “piped in” conch shells blaring and e’noa chants that announced the arrival of our football team. surely, i understand the new regime’s desire to re-brand the product as his, but, these two things became part of the warriors already. it certainly got this old guy to stand up and pay attention to our team’s entrance.
…and another thing. when they recently got rid of the all black uniforms and the haka it really made this “not the warriors”. fans across the nation loved the haka, recruits loved the hollywood entrance and all its hype (as well as the old guys).
finally, we get the all black uniforms back and the haka is not the ha’a. and the players, well by a vote they all unanimously wanted to wear the all black home uniforms all the time. and the coach, being more superstitious than anything agreed to the all black.
everybody’s participating in the haka…life is good.
remember that sound system that june bought to pipe in the conch and chant? well, i heard that they took it down in spite of the fact that june was leaving them here.
say it ain’t so….
al . . . I definitely respect your opinion, as you tend to post very valuable and positive information, but I have to comment on your question as to why people question our high ranking offense. Sure we have a good offense that puts up gaudy numbers, but what is pretty obvious is that we don’t have the “killer instinct” in our offense. The numbers are a result of the system that we run, whether people like to hear that or not. And believe me, I am not ingnorant to the fact that we just had a solid 10 win season. What I look at, and I assume others do too, is how we perform offensively on the big stage against tough teams. We squeaked one out against Nevada, but struggled against every other worthy opponent this year. Do I think this years team was good? Hell yeah! Do I think Coach Mack and his crew did a good job? Yes, with the exception of bowl preparation. Do I think that this was a great season? Yes. Still, if we want to compete with the Boise’s of the world, we need to develop that killer instinct and stop embarrassing ourselves on the big stage.
…my guess is that june will be leaving smu in a year or two or sooner. he’ll land up in the nfl next as long as he can do things his way.
his preference would be on the west coast, i would imagine (ralph, you listening)?
or one of the storied nfl cities.
U da man al…spot on..
oh yeah . . . Moniz almost pulled out a victory against USC????????? what?
also, I like the all blacks, but not everytime. I am in favor of mixing it up. I would love to see ALL GREEN once in awhile.
oh yeah . . . looks like JJ got his black in SMU too.
I overheard someone (someone pretty un-credible) say that JJ turned down an offer from Maryland. Any truth to that, or complete BS?
Its good to have high expectations but after last seasons 6-7 finish we were projected to finish like 6 place in THE WAC we ended up finishing in 2nd place! An yet people are disappointed trust me I’m a little sad to that we dont finish strong but this year was a good year! USC nobody gave us a chance we was supposedly suppose to be blown out in the 1st half but we were only down by one possesion or 2. We were supposed to finish with at THE MOST maybe 6 or 7 wins we ended up getting 10… There will ALWAYS be room for improvement but take into account that we blew out many teams in our conference, we could’ve done the same thing to Colorado, Army but we let it slip through our hands.
Remember our coordinators are still young so give Rolo & Aranda the benefit of the doubt remember they have the job for a reason any fan can be hypothetical an not worry about the backlash but just give Aranda an Rolo to grow as coordinators! If we keep up the progression then I see a bright future the only thing missing from our program is KEY wins on NATIONAL T.V. we always seem to underplay on National T.V. an for us is to finish the SEASON STRONG! For the most part we have played tough in our regular Season final games 3 years ago against Cincinnati who was ranked I believe in the top#10, Against Navy but not against Wisconsin, an this year we had like 4 consecutive wins despite who we were playing thats a good thing we just need to learn to Start Tough an FINISH STRONGER than ever we seem to start off hot after the 4 game then peaked at like mid season! As I said there are always room for improvement!
But as a Fan I wanna thank the coaches an players for giving us a championship that wasnt expected! WAC CHAMPS 2010!!!
GO WARRIORS
I BELIEVE!!!
kev-1…you are absolutely correct. we don’t have the killer instinct. dating back to that cincinatti game when we had them on their backs. we had the opportunity to bury them, but, we went conservative that game after a three td lead.
the run n shoot went to the run to eat the clock.
what happened?
we don’t run well and therefore we gave them the ball time and time again and they scored time and time again. we lost.
there are other examples…i’ll save it for another time.
we should be pedal to the metal all the time.
i don’t think it is the offense that lacks the killer instinct it is the attitude. it is the preparation. i don’t think it is rolo either. he doesn’t have complete reign of the offense.
many a little birdie has said this time and time again.
“too many cooks spoil the broth”
this is what happens on the sidelines…too many opinions.
we stand to lose one of our best staffers just because of this.
…go figure
Oftentimes you have to give the opposing defense props. Same can be said about the Warriors defense, need to have a killer instinct, stop the big plays from happening. In the end, no one is perfect and there are bound to be mistakes either mental or physical. That’s just part of the game.
moniz before getting wiped out in the third quarter did pass for 269 yards and rush another 58 yards in that usc game.
jj did speak with maryland but is staying at smu. almost twice the salary was put on the table.
al . . . I don’t think its Rolo either. I am very high on Rolo. I like the way he incorporated the run more this year, and look for that to increase more next year. The one thing I see with Rolo is his tendency to adapt. This is how he differs from JJ. Rolo throws more wrinkles into the mix, whereas JJ stuck to his guns. I look for Rolo to continue to mold this offense into his own.
I also agree that the killer instinct comes with the attitude of the team, and that is lacking. I strongly feel that comes from the top with Coach Mack. That guy’s lack of emotion stresses me out. There have been so many times when I wanted to see him go up to a player and grab his face mask and say “wake up and get in the game” or some more profane version, but instead, he reverts to the pat on the butt, good job regardless if it was anyway comments. However, I do not feel we should get rid of him, as others may suggest. He has the right coaches in place, and if he can be more vocal (aside from making slurs in the media), then we will be in good shape.
I would love to see JJ get an nfl gig . . . come on Mr. Davis, take a chance on em.
The running game benefited due to the pistol.
Next evolution in the R&S…play action with the slots and ends.
Next next evolution in the R&S…more QB running plays.
Next next next evolution in the R&S…tight ends.
LOL, it’s fun being an armchair QB.
and don’t forget that the niners need a coach too.
i think the niners want mr. stanford though. Carolina? Miami?
and yes NCAA . . . tight ends please.
actually, jj’s rns has evolved at smu. they do employ the run a lot more these days.
this past year they had a net 1943 yards rushing for 138 yds pgm
while they passed for twice as much at 3861 yds for 275 yds pgm
Mr. kev-1,
And I’m talking double tight ends!
Yes, it’s fun being an armchair coach too!
Run left, run right, play action, tight end down the middle no safety coverage…TOUCHDOWN!
i’d love to see some option as well.
i love’d it when they ran it inside the ten. they should do this more often as it creates a lot of chaos for the defense. i mobile guy like moniz and graves could work more magic with this stuff.
Can you imagine Mariota doing this in the next next evolution…only if he was a Warrior.
al:
#60 – U R correct – we are not on the same page.
slots in motion is check defense is not the same as running some type of an option/motion play to increae the effectiveness of the offense and keep the defense honest; and to keep your fans more into the game – will it be a run? will it be a pass? and please, why run up the middle or between the tackles and completely disregard any kind of a “motion/option” play to gain short yardage or in the “red zone” for a TD? as Mrs A-House yells, coffin corner, you jerk!
as a DC, if your opponent always sticks to the pass, is it easier to defend? will you allow more blitzes by the LBs and safeties? will you allow the Dline to just tee off on the Oline and get to the QB?
yes, the run-n-shoot puts up gaudy numbers, but it does “back fire” when balls are over/under thrown; receivers keep dropping balls; receivers run the “wrong” route; etc. speaking of running the wrong route, if the run-n-shoot allows the receivers to “feed” off the DBs, how often will the QB and receiver NOT be on the same page? how can you say that the receiver ran the wrong route if, in his opinion, the receiver read something completely different than the QB or coach? is not the run-n-shoot “fluid” when it comes to route running?
people say the QB is going through his “progression(s), but if the Oline does not give him the time, how many times will the QB go with his gut instincts on the 1st or 2nd read? is there a college QB who can read the defense within 2 or 3 seconds after the snap? perhaps, if it is a short yardage play as the WR comes off his stance and angles toward the center in front of the DB.
surely, the run-n-shoot, as i understand it, is NOT fixed on concrete routes thus allowing the “D” more opportunities to slam the QB.
I’m actually looking forward to seeing Mariota play at Oregon. I don’t know why, but I’m glad he’s going there. It would be nice for a local boy to be a star at the next national champion (hint hint)
oops – should be “motion to check”
The Run & Shoot is like Stone Soup.
We have the stones of various size and shape and the chef who created it.
But to improve it… we need to add stuff?
Maybe some tomato. Onions and celery would be good. How about carrots? Some beef would be excellent. Gotta have some potato too…
Mix together and simmer over medium heat.
Throw out the rocks and enjoy.
😕
Potpourri:
1) The best NFL team for June Jones. The Oakland Raiders. Maybe Tom Cable will get fired soon and the speculation will start. Jerry Glanville will be Junes’s defensive coordinator….that would be something. Maybe then, Colt Brennan will get a shot.
2) Who are best cornerback tandem in UH football history? How about Jeris White and Hal Stringert. Radford and St. Louis. Com on, Man! That was a long time ago. Lyndell Jones and Dana McLemore were good, but what about two of them on the same team at the same time. Myron Newberry and Gerard Lewis were not bad, but they were small. Newberry was a pretty good punt returner. Ryan Mouton may have been the best, but he only played 2 years and the first year he was mostly a nickel back, backing up Newberry and Lewis.
3) Good is not enough for some teams: Ralph Friedgen was ACC coach of the year and won his bowl game at Maryland, but he got fired. Not enough. Bill Stewart at West Virginia had a 9-3 record and tied for the Big East co-championship but he will be replaced after next year by a head coach in waiting. Winning is not enough. Winning Big is the only thing that matters at some places.
4) Rob Bolden – why would he come to Hawaii? I can’t think of any reason why he would.
There is some precedent however. Amani Purcell transferred from Penn State and came to Hawaii. Maybe Bolden is the holy grail!!!!!
5) Who is better, Paipai Falemalu or Hauoli Jamora? Hawaii vs Washington. Both DEs.
6) Is Joey Iosefa, 6’1″ 245 lbs. the battering ram running back we need to pick up the short yardage for first downs or red zone rushing TDs? Can he break tackles? Is he tough? Does he have a quick burst? Can he block? Can he catch a little? Can he hang on to the ball? We will find out in the spring and maybe he will surprise us, but I like the make up (big thighs, low to the ground, thick body). There are just some guys who just bounce off defenders like bowling pins, thus the analogy known as the human bowling ball like former Miami Dolphin player Don Nottingham.
There has been a lot of talk about getting more local boys to commit to UH, IMHO I don’t care where they come from Kuhuku or boonedog Idaho, as long as they are they best that we can put on the field. “IF YOU WIN THEY WILL COME”
Mr. A-House,
Sorry, but I don’t get what motion you are talking about. Any RB, slot, end, TE that goes in motion before the snap (not forward) is in motion.
Mr SteveM,
Stone soup? Why throw out the stones when that is the basic ingredient?
In this day and age in Hawaii, more things take precedent over a winning football program. We couldn’t even fill Aloha Stadium for the bowl game.
Pomai:
I have no problem with your #93.
However, as a big time BCS coach said about 8 years ago, Hawaii would be in the top 15 evey year if all the local talent stayed home to play for Hawaii. This speaks volumes!
Most if not all coaches say they MUST recruit locally to be successful – here or on the mainland.
My post on yesterday’s blog this morning came exactly as the first post on today’s blog was uploaded.
Four basketball games this week – Thursday and Saturday – women’s at 5 and men’s immediately following. On Thursday following the men’s game, the XY volleyball team will hold its `Ohana event.
Will check out if people with tickets to the Wahine games can stay around for the men’s games. If so, we’ll have tickets available to give away.
BTW – did you notice in yesterday’s long story about sports tourism that nothing, zippo, nada was mentioned about marketing UH intercollegiate sports. Given that over 100 teams
come to Hawai`i each year, I don’t understand why there hasn’t been a concerted effort to put together travel packages which include game tickets, hotels, tours, etc.
I raised that issue at the end of the 2008-2009 season with several people at UH, HTA, and the travel companies and hoped that they would take advantage of the contact information I provided to get together to talk about establishing a pilot project for baseball, softball, and football; nothing happened. Evidently, no one feels it’s worth the effort.
Ms. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc,
You answered it yourself, no one feels it’s worth the effort.
The wrong decision in the Sheraton Bowl was putting Pilares in to recieve the kick off injured on the first play,
only 2 starting recievers, Bradley out too, plus a lineman or two.and so the offense was clickiing but only with 2cylinders. It is the hard way to try and win. Who is to blame, anybody?
What’s the game plan for next year and beyond good to go to the MWC but stronger and better competition
awaits, where will UH end up, top half ,bottomhalf, what?
I thought Pilares was receiving a punt?
100
ahouse…now i am even further confused.
i think you mean an option play and not motion?
like he said, anyone in motion prior to the snap is in motion.
so do you mean post snap movement? wait everyone better be moving by then?
are you referring to…never mind.
kona blue, been saying this a couple of times, it was actually the 1st punt return. Pilares wasn’t doing this much anyway and 1 game would not enhance his draft status. Cannot understand how the coaches would jeopardize the team’s chance at success especially when everyone saw what happened when Boise could concentrate on Salas. Just thankful Pilares is O.K. and got the NFL combine invite. He has been one of my most favorite players since his freshman year; so unselfish playing running back, then wideout to help the team while his “money position” was always at the slot.
Anyone know how Greg Alexander is doing and where is he?
Last thing, TCU coach Patterson’s record against AQ schools is OUTSTANDING! Talk about walking the talk!
a former three year starting olineman at uh, has said it often, if we kept the top ten or twelve local kids every year, which would be more lineman and linebackers and supplement them with some speedy athletes from the mainland we would be top ten every year.
…true
ncaa…you are on it today!
#99 & #103
Then would you say Chad Owens should not have returned kicks and punts once he became a starter?
hello everyone, just sending this invite to whomever can can

I always think play the best. The coaches select who to play where and who am I to second guess their choices? They see the players day in and day out. They know who have worked hard and are doing their football homework.
We can applaud or be critical of their decisions. It makes for good reading and conversation.
Now someone give some hints on which local recruits are tradewind leaning towards Hawaii. It’s been kind of hard gauging which way they are leaning with all this Kona, easterly, variable, and no winds lately.
#106, Pilares had hardly been returning punts all year. 1 game doing this would not have made a dent in his draftabilty. Look how his absence at the Boise game affected the offensive options and how the Broncos shut down the passing game. Also big difference his Owens body type and durability compared to Pilares if you are making that comparison.
Tulsa had a field day only having to worry about #1. Don’t forget how this tandem made each other that much better and harder to defend. All I am saying is that the risk did not warrant the reward in regards to the “TEAM” success.
Howzit Everybody,
Al #102,
I think what A-House want’s Hawaii to run is a read option spread. I think he’s talking about fly sweeps and the run option plays. Well I think that’s what he trying to describe.
If Pilares had a field day against Tulsa, running back a couple of punts for TD’s and receiving over 100 yards with a couple more TD’s, and a few slot running plays that went for 1st downs and came away from the game injury free would anyone be second guessing the coach?
#18 wafan:Wrong spelling “Booby” prizes sir not boobs !
A term used on Coney Island and New Jersey shores by way of the boardwalk.
Carnival games and “consolation prizes” to honorable people who deserves recognition !
Don’t want you getting confused about prizes with Hooters I don’t own or operate !
FUNNY !
111 – neva happen, move on –
NCAA, great point about if he ran back a couple of punts. If he did not get hurt Pilares probably would have had over 100 yards receiving with TD’s and a few 1st downs running some slot options. But he did get hurt on that 1st punt return and did not get a chance to realize anything else but icing down his knee.
I just felt really bad for him getting hurt after he came so far being a total team player not playing his best position at slot for 4 whole years.
WDoc – volleyfest is on Saturday, not Thursday. Can’t have events that late on a school night. 🙄
Rainbow Wahine Softball tidbit of the day:
The Rainbow Wahine have another chance, a very good one, to win both the regular season and tournament championships.
Nevada loses ace pitcher Katie Holverson and the Wolfpack have a lot of work to do to recover from a losing season in 2010.
Fresno State returns many of their starters from last season, but loses ace pitcher Morgan Melloh to her home state of Indiana where she will finish her final year of eligibilty. Fresno State presents the biggest challenge to the Wahine as they will host both their regular season match up against the Wahine AND the WAC tournament as well. Their best player, 1st base/pitcher Michelle Moses is back for her junior campaign and her overall abilities to hit, pitch, and field from 1st will remind UH softball fans of former NFCA All-American Kate Robinson.
The Wahine host New Mexico State, Utah State, Boise State (last season in the WAC), and Nevada at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Fresno State, San Jose State, and LaTech will host the Wahine on the road.
The WAC looks to be a one-bid league this season. The Wahine’s non-conference schedule is NOT as difficult as in the past. The Wahine have a chance to build a very excellent overall record before heading into conference play, but their RPI will be a un-welcomed burden.
If the Wahine do not win WAC tournament, there is still a chance for an at-large bid, but do not expect them to be seeded unlike last season. With an RPI of 14th best in the nation, the Wahine, with their tremendous win-loss record ended up with the last seeded position. Out of 56 games, the Wahine will host 36 (2nd most in the nation) at home.
At the Cathedral City Classic in February, Hawai’i will take on four opponents who all reached the NCAA field in 2010. In succession, the Wahine will meet Oklahoma, Nebraska, Syracuse and Virginia. The Catherdral City Classic is one of , if not, the premire tournament in women’s softball yielding the best competition in many brackets. If the Wahine are to increase their overall RPI, this is the tournament to do it in for 2011.
While the Wahine play four teams that made the NCAA Super Regionals in 2010 (BYU, Oregon, CAL, and OKU) teams that fill their home schedule like along with South Dakota, South Dakota State, Longwood, Weber State, Southern Utah, UC Davis, St. Bonaventure, Texas State, Miami of Ohio, Iona College and Cleveland State, will hurt their RPI win or lose.
The RPI itself is out of the hands of the team and coaches, how they work through their schedule is all that matters.
SEE YOU ALL AT THE RWSS!!!
I like that idea.
Another good idea:
Get plenny kine stress talking about football. The what if’s, who going sign, etc…
Focus da MANA on the spring. Baseball, softball, and Warrior volleyball all have tremendous momentum heading into this season considering the success of last year and basketball just started conference play.
Let’s go support these Warriors and Rainbow Wahine too!!! 😎
(OMFG… I’m giving out anti-stress advice??? Yup, it’s a New Year indeed! 😯 )
Just hoping our guys who have a chance at the next level continue to train hard and make good impressions at their respective camps.
Also hoping those returning players, Grey/Red shirts, and new incoming guys take off season training and conditioning as seriously as ever.
I’m just taking it easy until National Letter Day.
Looking forward to a new Hawaii Five-0 in a couple of minutes.
Chillax everyone!!!
Go Stanford!
Pilares did get hurt, Salas was told to fair catch the ball in the previous game to prevent any injury. With Pilares it would have been 3 cylinders or 75 percent of the 4 wides, a better chance to win. The picks Moniz threw was probably the recievers being out of position.
So what next year win 9,10, then slack for 3 weeks and lose again? Samething again. What needs to change?
Ooohhh… mean twist in Five-0 at the 33 minute mark of tonight’s show! Unreal!
I hope our NFL hopefuls don’t train like they did for the Sheraton Bowl. “we’ll do alright” attitude needs to change if they want to challenge for an NFL spot.
For those who did not graduate in December I hope you plan on returning to UH to complete your degree. Good luck.
Ummmm… so… for those of us with a ticket to Rainbow Wahine basketball for this Saturday, will we get asked to leave prior to the start of the men’s game again?
What should be taken into consideration is a discounted ticket price for BOTH events.
I saw many UH staff and administrators walking around the arena last time checking everyone’s tickets and that policy just created a MESS for those trying to enforce it. Saw LOTS of ticket off people that may never come back again.
Howzit Tsaikos.
kona blue 121.
hold that thought, blue. re-read dis mornings tsen tzu huhu. da motivatah is heehah! all will be will in da aina. so it was said, let it be written, yadi yada.
cuz we going remind Jimmy D dat mediocre is not our style.
Jim Harbaugh’s “interview” with Elway is going pretty good.
al:
#102 – same smell!
OK, let us agree to use the term “option play” – U know, like the blocking back feints a block and moves out to the flat for a pass or just move out to the flat for a pass – or, have the slots do a reverse or even a double reverse or slot reverse with pitch back to the QB for a pass down field or just a simple USC move of “student body right” and/or “student body left”-
options can be somewhat unlimited – can even try Boise State’s Statute of Liberty play.
main objective is to make it more difficult for the defense to contain UH’s plays!!!
BUT, the coaches MUST give the QB the green lite to call an option at the line of scrimmage.
NFL Offense.
CFB Defense.
#104 al – The problem with that is we all use the biggest word in the english language “if” we have been saying this for the last how many years and it never happens and I am sorry to say it may well never happen, so we must do what ever it takes to get the best we can get on the field, no matter where they are from…….
Al
AHouse
didja see dat Michelle on ESPN Orange Bowl post game interview. Harbaugh tells her at da beginning of da interview, go talk to his d guy. and he leaves.
Michelle, she wen adapt, improvise. she wen interview da dback, and den she just did a fast 40 and interviewed Luck. totally impressive, even da ESON home team wen go wow Michelle.
I like peeps like her attitude and gumption fo be our coach. no scared. charge em. no take no fo an answer!!! delivery an results is da key
hats off to da lady of ESPN on da field.
http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/12/smus-jones-removes-himself-from-maryland.html
From the time I left my house until the time I left work, this was a 12+ hour day…I’m so tired. But not too tired to note that Al was much less encouraging about recruiting in today’s blog than I remember in previous blogs…I hope that the birdie has happier news soon.
…if we can get stronger play out of our corners and safeties we’ll have a helluva defense next year…
…not easy getting Mouton’s or McClemore’s…
SteveM,
I’m glad that you got to see the Undercover Boss episode. It was especially interesting to me because most of that episode was on the ship that I’ll be on with my family, and the rest of it was on the cruise ship in Hawaii.
Great job Stanford! Say ALOHA to Jim Harbaugh!
I’d love for UH to have 2 Moutons…but scrappy CBs like Newberry and Lewis will do. I love watching Abe Elimimian also.
It is hard to compare CBs from much further back because offenses throw the ball so much more now and UH isn’t playing teams that run offenses like the triple option anymore.
Stanford got hosed by the refs in their game against Oregon…they could be the ones in the National Title game instead. The Pac-10 even admitted that the calls were blown when they reviewed the tape of the game. I’m glad that Stanford won their BCS game and Harbaugh will be in great demand this offseason (49ers? Michigan?).
one of the comments in the SMU post Garret just wen put said:
I wonda if we got dat prolem upper campus. seems like we do too. den again, get sum peeps here tink dat dare is life befo football. pffftttt….. no clue… no clue…
al
tell me dat our chief local recruiters neva slow down, dat day still get credibility. please tell me dat!
Yes, I got to see it thanks to a link LizKauai posted on FB. The show did not show much of the background activities but it was good to see the typical basketball court on video (photos like mine do not do it justice). Pride of America (Hawaii) shots showed the theatre for the “all hands” meeting at the end. The area where the CEO revealed himself to the employees was the back portion of the Martini Bar. The large picture windows were curtained but has an excellent view. Cell, wireless modem, and ship wifi is great there. I can picture a UH sport journalist on his laptop and sipping apple martinis there… 🙂
Bh2 i agree about Michelle. I like how she went after Luck and stole him from the other reporters. She would make a good DE. She knows how to get to the quarterback.
On New Year’s Day, my wife ordered me some tofu soup @ Choi’s Garden. I stared at the bubbling concoction and thought, isn’t this the bubbling tofu soup gigi & others were talking about years back?
RedZone
I agree about Michelle. But I’d like her to be coach even better. she no fool around, gets right on da nitty gritty witout batting an eye. gives out totally good vibe will cutting da throat of da opposition. i like dat ALOT!!!!
ahouse…
oh you mean a bubble pass or bubble screen pass. now i get it.
so it is not an option nor a man in motion.
ahouse…
okay, i get it again. yah these are reverses…
….
A-House,
I definitely would like to see Hawaii develop a more potent running attack utilizing the slot receiver or even a second running back. I feel that we have to make the defense also worry about defending the run. Most of the time, Tulsa had 6 defenders (5 linemen & 1 linebacker) in the box. That seems perfect for a multi-faceted run attack…just my amateur Monday night QB opinion.
LizChun could learn from Michelle. 😎 afta all, Coach doin a great job is priority numba 1 in Hawaii nei. numba 1. Liz gotta help him out, like Michelle helped out ESPN at da Orange Bowl. dat lady, how she did her job tonite, iz a role model fo all reporters, man or woman.
okay, some people would call it a “flea flicker pass”.
i hear you now.
If we’re not able to retain Mouse Davis for next season, I nominate A-House as wide receivers coach and chief mentor for Rolo. 😉
ahouse…okay, now these are not options. these are your typical smash mouth football. we going sweep right or go off tackle and we gonna bust your lip if you are in the way. no options, trickery, bubbles, other than bursting bubbles inside the dline’s mouth.
these are straight up run em right at you.
If there is no blocking scheme and the gunners from the opposing team cannot be contained, it does not matter who is there to return punts. Success will be limited and injury abound. So obvious there was not a plan to contain the gunners cause the majority of the time they were there the same time as the ball.
IF, indeed is a big word.
the word is a phrase in itself. it portends of something bigger that has yet to come. it gives hope and a future of good things down the road. it is bigger than life. for one day should it be achieved we will all relish in the glory and then start searching for the next,
…IF
Not an Expert
so, ifn I wuz Coach Tormey, tell me what you’d tell me about da blocking scheme and nailin da gunners.
we had guyz fo run in front and nail dare front men. just had to man up, give and take da whacks, a$$ all. we had plenty time fo watch da videos fo no who da gunners were likely to be. and we had guys fo hang by da returner to set sumtin up. watchin our returner all by his lonesum left me wit da peelin dat he was gonna be sexually assaulted….. unless he wen make fair catch. i dunno. i am not a football coach. but i no wen i stay watchin wat looks like a betta coached team. dats how i felt sometimes. how about you?? i guess da main question fo me is, wat we gonna do about it in 2011? da special team ting, i mean.
psssstttt….
I got a partial answer… and he’s at Baldwin…. 😀
Is Brian Cabral coaching anywhere? If not, he might be a good one for linebacker coach if one comes available at UH because I think we would do a great job getting the local players to stay home. Then again, by now he’s probably “haole-fied”. Is that a new word! When was the last time we got the top local recruit to stay home? Was it Tim Chang? Was he the #1 player in the state according to the college recruiters?
In my opinion, Andrew Luck and Jim Harbaugh are gone to the NFL. Luck will be drafted by the Carolina Panthers who also drafted Jimmy Clausen last year. I hope Harbaugh decides to coach with my beloved 49ers down the street from Stanford. He can draft the next great quarterback. That would be nice. We’ll see. Denver might be wooing him too, but I’m not sure if we want to coach there. I also like John Gruden for the 49ers, but Gruden might be too comfortable in the booth.
or the ball had a good hang time, credit to the punter
al:
all your recent posts mocking me – hey, same smell, just different words like “spread” vs “run-n-shoot” – same smell different words!!!!!!!!!
if da slots go into motion to see if “zone” or Man” coverage, makes no hail of beans if the Oline does not block or the QB and receiver no connect – its just another pass play that didn’t work – ok, next “pass play” – this is good??????
just be more innovative in calling/mixing plays – be more creative – some here say Rollo is the only one to take the HC job – yet, I view on the tube, so many other teams running the “spread”/ “run-n-shoot” offense – this system is NOT only in Hawaii and only for Hawaii!!!!!!!!!!!
damn, if i used the same tactic continuously in combat, i would lose a lot of men and equipment – now, you write home to all the men killed because i would not be more creative to reduce my losses. that was the most important lesson i learned in being an officer – every mistake i made someone died needlessly – quite different if i loss $$$ or a ball game – evryone get to live another day.
Curt: if I got the job, al would go bonkers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and be jealous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! simultaneously at that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ACC takes a bath in a BCS game. ESPN tried to down play their loss to Boise State by pumping up VT long winning streak in the ACC.
Big East embarrassed by Oklahoma.
five Big Ten teams go down in BCS games on New Year’s day.
Boise State could have held their own as a one loss team in a BCS game.
Bighilofan2:
missied Michelle – only watched part of the game before and during dinner – after that, had work to complete.
she must have been a sight to behold!!!!!!!!!!!!!

den of course dare is Paipai, Geordon, and so on and so on. I like da bruddaz who like play fo us. now, i like da coaches coach fo us. coach like winners. da players deserve dat. we deserve dat. coach like… uh…. Michelle on ESPN. no foolin around, run to da hole, bust loose in da 40.
first time i REALLY seen her. and dis i tell you straight. she is ALL PRO! 😀
Question: When did the University of Hawaii beat an AQ school (who had a winning record) on the road? I can’t think of one. And therein is the main problem for us as far as getting to the next level. We are light years away from being close. Traveling 3 or more time zones are tough enough, not to mention the altitude, the hostile crowd, “pink” locker rooms, etc.
Until we beat “somebody” who is “somebody” on the road the pollsters will not take us seriously. Boise St., TCU, BYU, Utah, Fresno St., and a couple others like Air Force and Tulsa have done it. The only opportunity we have this coming season is at Washington. The Huskies are getting better and should have a winning season as long as they get decent play from their new QB. It will not be easy winning in Seattle and we will be big underdogs for that game. The spread will depend somewhat on how we do against Colorado at home for the season’s opener on Sept. 3. To make a statement, we have to win a big football game on the road at UW.
In that regard, if I was Jim Donovan, I would wait until the 2011 season is over to decide if he wants to extend McMackin’s contract or not.
ahouse…me mock you. never.
i was just trying to clarify the waters so that i could see the bottom of the pail. okay, so you want to make the spread and the run n shoot the same offense. okay, ill let june jones explain that one to paul johnson.
we can all hail that the gang’s all here and nobody would give a hill of beans about it.
but, remember everything is all in fun, not to make fun of any one person.
colonel…i do get your drift. i also think that rolo has done a great job since he was given more reign to worl with. i like the innovation and implementation of our pistol offense alignment. although not as deep as nevada, setting our rb back a bit has helped the ball carrier see the field better.
i thought they would call it the derringer instead of the kiko.
colonel…i really liked your analogy of mixing up the attack strategy in football as you would in combat. i especially liked what you said about protecting the lives of your soldiers and equipment and relate that to the “protect this house” mantra of the warriors.
that’s it. they should step on the aloha stadium turf as if this were their battle grounds. protect this house, protect our fellow warriors, and the like.
A-house,
Leach and the Former Coach both utilize “spread” offenses. Run and Shoot different from Air Raid. Sight adjusted routes is the difference.
…Bess showing the value of having a receiver who understands principles of making adjustments to routes based on coverages.
AHouse,
i am wonderin… since you and al know soooo much about da options, how come we got likkens, as in majah kraks, at BSU wen we had all our peeps intact? maybe wit Tulsa we had sum nuts missin, but at BSU, now dat was no can.
you think more options woulda made da difference?
but first things first….
Hawaii 5-0 is behind da times. still got a lady playing da Governor….
who knows how to get ahold of Danny DeVito? same size. some makeup, and good to go.
😆 😆

#161 – Oregon and Illinois 1992. It’s been awhile.
Herve Villechaize would be more apropos, he is shorter than Danny. But then again, I am not sure if he is alive.
If you don’t mind, where do you host your web blog? I am searching for a good web hosting and your site appears to be extremely fast and up most the time?
bighilo:
#167 – I think it would have helped the offense get in the grove and keep the BSU defense more “honest” – very few “option plays” were called so the front 4 took care of UH Oline leaving the LBs and DBs to cover the receivers – Moniz was “rushed” a lot which contributed to many incompletions
one thing is certain – UH needs to find/build very good OTs and I believe that Jordan and Sean, from either side of the State will more than hold their own in the very near future – unsure which will be on the left side.
but herve no mo da hairdo like danny d. spittin image danny & neil. 😀

i like a man who, wen called out, will rise to da occasion, stand up fo wat he believes in…
and fight for wat he believes in… in da present context, Hawaii….
if da coaches not going stand up to a peep squeak like me, no expect da players to stand up eeda. if da coaches like recruit da best, den day betta try recruit da best…
cuz you can tell dem dis, Daniel went away, and i neva go see one of his games, except when he came Honolulu. and i told his cousins, he was a fruitcake. and i no care if he went NFL. i really don’t care. I’m just looking forward to busting Wash., das all.
i’m still suffren concussion ova da beatin. very bad…. and now i’m Mad! i wuz mad when doze 3 polys on da concourse was laughin at Hawaii…. “look look… he going score….” in da late 3rd quarter…
boy did dat one wop my jaws…
changing dat image starts wit a positive visual image at the top, and getting da sought after player to believe he will make da difference for Hawaii. and promising us all dat you gonna change da Special Team ting dis coming season.
c’mon coach.
Off-topic…
In da howyoufigga department:
http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/112849834.html
Before many Tsaikos were born – probably including AL and AHouse, TCU had a coach named Dutch Meyers, who also was a forerunner of the Run n’ Shoot.
Usual four receivers but his line was almost split from one sideline to the other. If I recall the center and guards were fairly close to each other – a little wider than a split-T. Was a bit difficult to defend as the defense also had to split leaving a lot of openings for the running back and receivers.
cuz ifn day like keep da recruiting close to da chest, i understand dat kinda tinkin. what i don’t understand is not saying nuttin else about anytin else, especially when we all can see get plenty parts on da car dat need Bondo, fiberglass, carbon fiber and steel.
and what I’d really like to see is samoa THICK Abe lookin Warriors. there is a diff between THICK and …. uh…. kinda thick…
bsu…pilares did not play in this game due to injury.
bsu focused their attention on salas.
our qb’s got sacked 7 times without too many blitzes.
we punted 9 times.
kellen moore ripped us to shreds with 500yds passing.
his jersey was as clean at the end as it was when he entered the game.
no sacks on our part.
to put it mildly, larry prices theorum comes to life…”physical superiority cancels all theory” we got whipped plain and simple. my hats of to bsu.
and aren’t they the most prepared team to ever participate in the wac???
…nuff said.
Al
I agree wit all dat. I also gotta say dis:
Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance. ABe is THICK because he wants to be THICK, and he’s got the mental support at USC.
I’m looking at the mental support at UH. I think da phrase “Don’t tase me, bro” explains my motivational theory in action.
okay, I gotta say nite all. and….

I have already been visiting your site for 3 days. really love your posts. by the way i’m conducting a research concerning this topic. do you happen to know other good sites or maybe online forums where I might get more info?
NCAA and others: Let’s assume that there 100 teams (not schools) who are playing Hawai`i here in the six ticketed sports plus softball. Let us assume that each of the support fan groups accompanying the team is currently 50 people. That’s 5,000 pwoplw- each of whom will spend about $800 each including discretionary gifts but not including air fare over a four-period. That’s $4 million dollars flowing directly iinto the economy plus about $40,000 in GET and TAT revenues.
Now let’s assume that special tour packages for half of those fan bases increase the number attending from 50 to 250 the first year out and include a lot more stuff including two extra nights even though the cost jumps up to $1200 per person. That’s 125,000 people and an an increase to over $10 million going right into the economy and almost $100,000 in taxes
This is being done all over the country in both collegiate and professional sports. Why not Hawai`i. Maybe it’s time to bring the idea back onto the front burner.
Still didn’t get an answer to my inquiry about the two basketball doubleheaders this week. Will check on it tomorrow between briefings at the Capitol.

I was pretty sure that Colorado was going to pick up the pace on recruiting in Hawaii once the new head coach Jon Embree picked up former Arizona D-line coach Mike Tuiasosopo to coach on his defense. So Colorado now has Brian Cabral and Mike T. hitting Hawaii for the best of their football players. Arizona supposedly is looking to hire former BYU OC Robert Anae to coach QB’s at UA. Look for UA to try to keep a foot in the Hawaii recruiting wars. Now we have Washington, Oregon State, Oregon, Colorado, UCLA, and probably Utah and Arizona actively recruiting in Hawaii. Utah appears on the verge of offering a former Ute LB from Hawaii a spot on staff as a G.A. so that he can get a graduate degree.
Will be interesting to see if Bronco Mendenhall gives Norm Chow a nibble to go back to BYU. That would be interesting.

Best is personal opinion 🙂 i prefer Marvel over DC due to continuity and better cross over storylines (usually). if you’re starting from scratch try the ‘ULTIMATE’ Marvel lines – Spiderman, X-men, Fantastic Four etc. Marvel rewrote these ditching the cold war/ nuclear threat and updated it with genetics (genetically altered spider instead of an irradiated one) etc. Additionally, this ‘ULTIMATE’ universe has had less contact with alien cultures unlike the core ‘MARVEL’ universe

Agree with some, Hulk when he’s angry can’t differentiate allies and enemies plus he like to destroy properties wherever he made his appearance… Same with me, i like Hulk but if compare with Iron Man or Spiderman, i prefer IronMan and Spiderman… Hulk has brute force, but other superheroes has a personality that makes them popular.. But i can’t deny that Hulk is one of the Strongest Marvel Characters out there… 🙂
