Wednesday report

The Warriors today polished off the schemes they will use against San Jose State Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

Quarterback Bryant Moniz had to work on a school project, and did not participate in practice. Afterward, he struck what he called his “academic” pose:

mo

The most spectacular play came during punting drills, when returner Greg Salas made a behind-the-back catch. OK, it wasn’t one-handed. But according to our photographer, Craig Kojima, it was one of the most amazing plays he has seen in his decades of sports photography. The shot was shown to Salas, who, in his typical nonchalant way, said, “cool,” and walked to the locker room.

The coaches have been praising Kamalu Umu, who has played well in the past several games. The coaches have several different areas under the category “disrupting the quarterback,” and Umu has been efficient in forcing quarterbacks to move out of the pocket, hurry throws and alter passes.

In answer to Pomai’s question: Kealoha Pilares will play slotback this week, but won’t be used as a punt returner.

* * * * *

Asked Moniz yesterday about slotback Miah Ostrowski.

Moniz said: “5-8, brown eyes, short hair, likes long walks on the beach, ehu girls, Punahou grad, All-State football and basketball player, loves dogs, hates cats, likes Facebook … oh, what? You mean as a football player? He’s a great player.”

Mental note: Be specific.

    Congratulations David Veikune!

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Wednesday signed free-agent linebacker David Veikune and waived linebacker Jarvis Moss, it was announced.

Veikune (6-foot-2, 257 pounds) is a second-year player who played 10 games as a rookie for Cleveland in 2009 being drafted by the Browns in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft from the University of Hawaii.

He appeared in 41 games (15 starts) for the Warriors and recorded 118 tackles, 18 sacks, 28 tackles for a loss and four forced fumbles while earning All-Western Athletic Conference honors playing defensive end. He redshirted as a freshman at the University of Colorado before transferring to Hawaiil.

A first-team All-State selection at Campbell High School in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, he was born on Dec. 12, 1985 in Anchorage, Alaska. His last name is pronounced vay-Koo-nay.

Please give me some football already.

After the Warriors scored only 7 points the last game, it is time to crank it up at home against San Jose St. SJSU has moved the ball lately and scored some points. Their defense gives up a lot of yards and points too. So, I’ll say it will be high scoring affair. Hawaii will score quickly in the 1st quarter and get 3 TDs in the first qtr. and 2 in the second qtr to lead 35-10. Warriors will score twice in each of the last 2 quarters and San Jose will score one TD in each of the 3rd and 4th qtr. We will likely see a kickoff return, an interception, or fumble return for a TD. Hawaii leads the nation in turnover margin. That’s huge.

    Pomai,

    Hawaii – 63 San Jose State – 24.

North Shore Fan #52: I don’t know if this is the same individual, but there is one person who wants to attend the T-Gates but does not blog nor attend the games because he doesn’t have any money. I’m not overly worried about this since we only have three T-Gates left this season – including the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl – but then I don’t make the rules.

However, DrDoc and I will be making malassadas upon request at the SHB morning T-Gate.

Viewing with interest, ABC news reports on China (PRC) at 5:30pm on KITV.

Chinese govt decided that all their citizens must learn English and it will be taught from kindergarden through college as they concluded that English will be the spoken language for all business transaction world wide.

Families that can afford, are sending their child/children for special tutoring to increase their ability to speak and understand English. Some interviewed, spokke perfect American Standard English which surprised Mrs A-House and me.

We all know that the Chinese govt makes evry effort to identify all those young ones with special athletic skills and send them to different locations to start training for the Olympics.

Surely, they will take only the very cream of the crop which leaves hundreds of thousands of student athletes available and perhaps a place at UH in men/women volleyball, track & field, swimming and diving, tennis, golf, men/women basketball, softball and maybe even football.

The news cast mentioned that there are currently 170,000 Chinese students studying in the US and othe countries. I bet none are in sports!

We all know that JIm D and Coach Mack went to Japan. Perhaps, they should broaden their horizons to China. If we can get just one very special student athlete, imagine the quantum leap in number of “viewing audience”. That also holds true for Japan and South Korea.

Maybe a good idea for Coach Gib to keep the line open for future recruits.

All you need is the first one!!!!!!!!!!

Les Murakami had a catcher from Korea….iirc, last name Kim, he had to go back to Korea because his mom wanted him home to help the family. The guy was pretty good. Watched him play a couple of games and he might have had a good career at UH.

We were at Camellias one evening and when he walked in the whole restaurant stopped and cooks were coming out from the kitchen and wait help was all over him. He caused quite a commotion that evening. he was the last foreign player I can recall.

  75. jm2375 November 17, 2010 12:06 pm

A-house – #71 – there are a few in sports – remember Xi Jiang? My experience with Chinese students has been only on the graduate level in the School of Public Health years ago. Most needed help in English, all were professionals and all but one was trying to get out of China. All paid their own way with no help from the Chinese govt.

  84. SteveM November 17, 2010 12:43 pm

Arghhh… I am forced to cancel my two back-to-back cruises this May! Just found out my bookings were disallowed because of the Jones Act.

Apparently, as a U.S. citizen, I am required to step foot on U.S. soil before I can re-board the ship in the foreign port of Vancouver, B.C.. Sounds strange, but the cruise line cannot prove I crossed the border nor would I bother…I booked the back-to-back for convenience. It would be OK if the voyage ended and started in a U.S. port.

The Jones Act needs some serious revision–especially in the 50,000 GT+ cruise ship arena, the U.S. merchant marine has no presence anymore. Even Dan could only get a waiver for Hawaii for a few years. Many attempts to repeal or change the Jones Act has failed. I wonder why.

    Sorry…just venting…

    here i am… a long time lurker… infrequent poster…

but, whoa. Jones Act, huh? thought this was a football blog/discussion?

    What is the Jones Act?

The term refers to several U.S. laws that govern the domestic transportation of merchandise and passengers by water. Strictly speaking, it applies only to Section 27 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (46 U.S.C. 883). In short foreign flag vessels are prohibited from picking up cargo at one U.S. port and unlading it at another U.S. port. Only U.S. flag ships are permitted to engage in coastwise trade.

this also pertains to passengers. passengers on foreign vessels are not allowed to board in the US and leave in another US post without leaving the country.

and you’re right. there are very few US merchant marines. most of the ships we get in Long Beach are foreign (mostly Liberia, Panama, China)… only a hand few of US crews. and to tell you the truth.. the US crews are the worst to deal with (so rude and inconsiderate), except for the Hawaii boys who say they are citizens of Hawaii (when asked what country they are citizens of). haha…

that said, GO BOWS! and i love and miss Hawaii…. and i’m so ready for the game on Saturday! had withdrawls last weekend. 🙂

  115. A Sovereign Nation November 17, 2010 1:56 pm

Jones Act would be moot if Hawai`i was a separate nation. At least one of our islands should be turned into a foreign sovereign nation. Since we are so far away from any land mass cruise ships need to go to Fanning Island to fulfill the Jones requirement. There are so few American merchant marines that the law is antiquated. The workers who would be displaced if foreign ships were allowed to port could be protected with the many land jobs created by the additional traffic. Lots of PAC dollars are paid into the DNC to keep our country in the dark ages and dependent upon our government for its livelihood. The model may work for the 48 contiguous, but its a disaster for a place like Hawai`i. We are a global presence and efforts to keep us under the current system hurt our economy.

Bryant Moniz may not be the most accurate passer but he is a most amazing person. He is a articulate, talented speaker and I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t make it to play on Sundays, he could be a talented play by play sports announcer. It doesn’t matter if Greg Salas is not a speedster. He catches anything that comes his way. A speedster who is not a talented catcher is only a track star.

    Mr. tommui,

There’s no way a cruise ship can store their sewage, bath, kitchen, and whatever else water is used on board and wait till they reach land to dump it. I think they dump it in the ocean

NCAA — There is a way, and the technologies have improved over the decades. Your statement would be accurate in the 1950’s though. Without boring you with the details of a former USCG boarding officer and inspector, let me say that the waste water handling on a modern (within 15 years) cruise ship is extremely efficient and none goes overboard except by human error.

The bathroom, kitchen, and other grey water is reused in the toilets, which then becomes black water and goes through the treatment plants. The ships are capable of producing treated waste water comparable if not superior to what land based plants discharge into the ocean.

I was very chagrined when “environmentalists” insisted that cruise ships in Hawaii discharge their untreated black water into the local sewage system (so we can spill it into the harbor and Ala Wai and pump the treated stuff a few hundred yards off shore) rather than discharge treated stuff far out at sea. 😐

As for oil, the FWPCA act and international agreements have been in place since 1972, and the U.S. Oil Pollution Prevention Regs are strictly enforced. So while ships can pollute, LARGE new cruise ships usually do not–especially when they are always under scrutiny.

  178. wafan November 17, 2010 5:11 pm

    Made . . .

If it were really going to be 6-degrees again it would not be a major problem. Talk about putting someone on ice.

Still it is a good idea. Very difficult to win the lotto especially since I never buy a ticket.

    HA!

Looks like Benson wants UTSA and TXST to try to convince North Texas to join the WAC.

Benson said the WAC would like to add a ninth football school for 2012, which would give UTSA the option of postponing its first season in the conference until 2013.

“By early spring, probably before April 1, we should know whether we’re going to be able to add that ninth football school,” Benson said.

North Texas was the only school he mentioned specifically as a potential WAC member.

    Good evening Tsaiko Nation,

I am VERY SORRY to hear of the untimely death of Francis Fletcher. I remember this young man very well coming down to klum gym and playing aginst the TOP competition in which Mr. Fletcher handled himself very well. Determination on his face at all times as he was a stand out for Tony Sellito Maryknoll team as he won all state honors. Fletcher was part of those TOUGH local players that featured Leroy Lutu, Brad Pineau, Richard Henish, Mark Rodrigues, The Morales brothers, Chico Furtado, Sam Johnson, Darryl Gabriel and Dan Hale. I enjoyed all those guys as not only they were OUTSTANDING players but GREAT gentlemen. My heart goes out to Mr. Fletcher and his love ones as he was truly a HARD WORKER on the court and even a WONDERFUL person in life. May his soul rest in eternal PEACE !

  187. Shoko November 17, 2010 6:18 pm

Karl Benson is the guy at a singles bar or nightclub vying for the ladies attention, but is rejected on a regular basis. However, after a few hours and a flurry of tequila shots, he eventually gets lucky and takes the fa….uh, gravity-challenged girl home who has rich parents (i.e. North Texas).

  188. tommui November 17, 2010 6:20 pm

bb re #185 Foreign flagged ships do not have to conform to US fair labor standard (wages, safety etc). The workers on board usually work for less wages than would be paid under an American flagged vessel and usually are on board for long hours – not 40 hours a week nor on over-time or double-time. They also are on long term contracts – usually 9 months.

However, they do get medicals while on board, decent meals and usually better pay than they get at home. Many come from (hate the term) third world countries and some from the Eastern European countries like Romania, Bulgaria etc.

    #189 tommui, thanks.

It makes a lot more sense now. So pretty much these foreign workers from 3rd world countries work for WAY less because the ship is under a foreign flag. They do not need to follow our labor laws.

I remember that our room steward to our waiter at dinner really went above and beyond and we did in fact tip them well at the end–they were obviously working for our tip money. These same workers that served us were also scrubbing the decks at night and touching up paint at different times as well.

A few years ago we were hoping that Jim Donovan would be our AD.

and in the meantime, he’s done us good.

andnow, the Big West has lifted their moratorium.

I’m thinking… I still gonna put my marbles on Jim. He means us well.

He means Hawaii well. Thats my feeling. So if you’re thinking Big West for everything but football, ou got my blessing Jim. Just make sure you can look ato yourself 5 years from now and think in your heart of hearts that you don us good.

cuz you know where I’m at….

I’ve been on a cruise and always wondered why these ships fly under a different country’s flag. I also wondered why are all the employees from foreign countries.

I never even knew the details of how the Jones act works until reading today’s comments.

I had already put a deposit for Mexico for January but the Carnival Splendor has already canceled our booking. Oh well.

I feel the same way. To JD the AD’s position is not a job but a mission, to quote Dick Tomey. He will make the right decisions for UH and the state. I only wish I was a fly on the wall in his office.

  202. Last Call November 17, 2010 8:36 pm

Interesting because the Big West moratorium dates back to 2005 then out of the blue they lift it and the only school rumored to be interested in seeking admission is who ?

If you don’t want to loose your money don’t start buying stocks or mutual funds now. The writing is on the wall. The current bull market is nearing its end. There is ample evidence that it may well be here now. People loose money in the stock market because they don’t know what they’re doing and you admit that you don’t. Would you rather have your money in cash for the next year or two earning money market rates or have the whole wad riding a bear market downtrend. In the stock market the only thing that is safe is cash. And by the way, bull markets always end violently.

I was in Alaska for 4 months and we ate salmon every other day fresh off of the grill. We always wrapped our salmon in aluminum foil and put butter, salt and pepper in with it. Sometimes we would change itupo and put some lemon and garlic in with it or even some Franks Hot Sauce. Tasty and since it was wrapped in the foil with the butter or lemon, and we didn’t overcook it, it never got dried out. of course, this was fresh Alaskan King Salmon and we ate what we caught so we knew it was fresh.

  321. Jack Boots Leather December 3, 2010 5:42 am

Most of the ladies would purchase these from the local market, compromising on the quality- because these are inexpensive or the once they are looking at is the only option. This would hurt them literally when they would be wearing these for relatively longer hours.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
