Changes are coming

With exit talks heating up among the WAC, Nevada and Fresno State, it is clear that the thing UH fans have been putting off is becoming a reality: Things are going to change.

Is change bad? A few years ago, there was a collective groan when the WAC scrambled to replenish its membership. But now, the Utah State and Idaho became important UH football games. And Utah State has been a boost to WAC basketball. Suppose, say, Seattle and Denver were added as basketball members. Wouldn’t those be substantial market gains over the current membership? Seattle or Fresno? Denver or Reno?

The thing is, UH is in a situation where any plan it has — independence/Big West, stay put — is a backup plan. Boise, Fresno and Nevada get to brag about their prom dates; UH is spouting the fun of going stag.

Not sure if things will be better. Not sure if they can get any worse. But things will change.

* * * * *

Don’t feel guilty about watching the Boise State-UH telecast for free or getting a refund from the pay-per-view subscription. As part of the contract with Oceanic/K5, UH is guaranteed $2.3 annually. UH won’t be getting anything less than what it expected. And nobody should feel sorry for Oceanic’s bottom line.

David Graves, who served as the scout quarterback the past few weeks of practices, is back at quarterback. But he did earn another assignment: He’s now the middle man on the hands team that receives onside kicks.

UH would be a joke if it stayed in the WAC and didn’t win.

Does change include UH football games for free on television lower ticket prices, and reduced premium seat fees?

JP is back on. I give him props because callers are calling him on some of the things he has said, and how he has said it. He has dealt with each one accordingly. It is clear though that some of the listeners are fed up at his delivery and format. He reads the boards so he is probably reading this and knows the feelings of many.

Traffic is bad. But 1420 has been a little more exciting today.

STAY! STAY! STAY! Keep the WAC intact at all cost! Promise! Independence will always be an option. But it’s a line, once crossed, will never be able to go back over.

This BCS crap will change. The 16 team playoff being proposed will make the entire NCAA landscape rich beyond their wildest dreams! You think money is hard to come by now, Independence in the new format will be worse than it is now. We’re gonna be kickin’ ourselves in the ass n nuts simultaneously every morning for leaving!

Just don’t succumb to knee jerk short sightedness, sit tight, hang on and ride out the storm. I promise- Boise, Nevada and Fresno will regret ever leaving!

    Good Morning everyone…

“Not sure if things can get any worse…”

Common Stephen, things aren’t that bad – the Warriors are rolling and we live in Hawaii nei…hey, there are those in Afghanistan without any radio reception, or the really unfortunate ones in Reno talking about how they could have gone to the Rose Bowl…and now are playing for the New Mexico Bowl.

  18. LizKauai (iPad) October 27, 2010 6:41 am

Last Call. I can only get 1420 in certain places while I am driving. Unless I use my iPhone app. But my last two attempts at calling in were successful so I can listen while they have me on hold. But, of course, when they hang up, I can hear nada.

Given the success of the football team which drives PPV sales, UH and Oceanic surely expected to get well beyond the base $2.3 million that UH is guaranteed. $2.5 million, probably more, was expected and that will be reduced quite a bit by the BSU game not being on PPV. If we complain about a horridly small compliance staff (leading to delays in players getting cleared and some eligibility issues) a lack of marketing, limited recruiting budgets, etc., we *have* to acknowledge that many of UHAD’s problems stem from simply not having enough money..

However, letting viewers donate the refund to UH is a *great* idea. UH was only going to get a percentage of the PPV sales for the BSU game, with Oceanic keeping the bulk of the money. UH will get 100% of the donation and may come out ahead. I agree that Oceanic has more than enough money and we shouldn’t worry about them.

The WAC is ok and have no problem with uh being part of it. It is not a loser, but will be a solid conference when all this mess is straigtened out. The only change I would like is to change the commissioner. Maybe just hoping, but if Benson is gone, the WAC will be a conference and not just one school with other players.

  24. A-joe October 27, 2010 6:48 am

Although we are not Mormons, we want to see the temple, because after this season, it will be closed to outsiders for maybe another 30 years. It was last open 30 years ago. People tell me it is very beautiful.

How is it that we get less day to prepare for road games

and Boise State gets extra days for their home game

against us by playing on a tuesday night?

  27. RainbowCliff October 27, 2010 6:55 am

    Good morning Tsaiko Nation !

YES, it is time to leave the “WEAK WAC” !

It really serves no purpose for any national recognition and

when the defectors leave the conference it is going to get

worst with possible teams of Seattle University, Denver University,

UC Davis, Montana State or Scramento State joining this depleted

    no RESPECT athletic conference.

Going Independent in football with all other sports joining the Big West

is the BEST solution at this point. Continue to stay in the WAC will

just cause frustration among LOYAL fans who want to see UH recognized

on the national stage and it’s players being consider for national awards.

Saying is one thing but doing it is another as AD Jim Donovan has his cup

filled and will leave his mark on UH athletics during his tenure at this critical

juncture for the survival of Hawaii athletics.

So many problems Hawaii has with distance, opposing teams traveling budgets,

scheduling worthy opponents and major conferences shutting their doors with

“no entry sign” or “invitation” for Hawaii to bring it’s competitive athletic teams in.

Time is ticking as answers and ACTION has to happen. Staying in the WAC will only

lead to heart break city and NO RESPECT from a national audience who holds the keys

    for national recognition !

UH needs POLITICAL intervention and BIG MONEY to influence !

Who in or outside of Hawaii has that ?

  28. Shoko October 27, 2010 6:55 am

I say keep our options open. Alot could happen…

    Oh, morning gang! 🙂

  29. whitey October 27, 2010 6:57 am

if Benson is gone, there are many WAC possibilities. One, would love to see the WAC move it’s hqtr from CO to Salt Lake City or Sacramento. Why should we stay in a state that has no WAC team???

  30. Pomai October 27, 2010 6:58 am

Even though I think the WAC is one of the weakest conferences I have to agree with A-Joe, I feel a playoff is coming, not sure how long it will take but is on the way. We should be the top dog in the WAC and being that, get into the playoffs where we will make a lot of $$$. But again it comes down to the same as it is right now – WINNING

  31. whitey October 27, 2010 6:58 am

  37. whitey October 27, 2010 7:07 am

if the word “big time” has any meaning, how will uh become “big time” being an independent. uh is respected in football even tho we may not be “big time”. do you see a kentucky, texas tech, kansas, notre dame, byu ranked ahead of us in football??? not too long ago, those were “big time” football power houses, but are now just average team. even if we go independent, how will that change our exposure??? Our exposure will go from the present to “oh yeah, there is a team in hawaii”. Our football team has more to lose from going independent.

  38. Garret October 27, 2010 7:10 am

    chopsueyboy,

UH plays 13 games while a lot of other teams like BSU play 12 games. So, UH will have 1 less bye week than most other teams. BSU’s Tuesday game was selected by ESPN, not by BSU.

  39. whitey October 27, 2010 7:11 am

pomai, for one, i would not hire a lawyer who is tied to any of the WAC schools. HNL is also another good place.

  40. whitey October 27, 2010 7:13 am

hump day and time to go like d1 says, hi ho.

  41. Shoko October 27, 2010 7:18 am

    Pomai,

That may be true, but the problem is the playoff system payout would be split within the conference. Presently, if UH made another BCS appearance, that 3 million that the Warriors would have made in a playoff system would be split in the conference. The playoff system is based on units and I think its harder for upsets to occur in football than basketball or baseball. I would think that a football playoff system would entail similar aspects as other D1 college sports that have a playoff system.

Got a meeting to go to, so I’ll check back later…

Amazing how some love sitting under the coconut tree watching opportunities pass them by pretending things will get better someday by doing nothing.

  44. Garret October 27, 2010 7:21 am

Shoko if done right there is 10 times the amount of money with a playoff.

    Pomai,

This is not really a sure thing. Everybody likes to point to the NCAA basketball tournament as a model, but did you realize that the “haves” (Big East, Big 10, Big 12, etc.) get *more* of the money from the NCAA tournament than the “have-nots” like the WAC gets than the BCS bowl system provides?

A playoff system would probably have the lower-seeded teams open with first-round games at the home stadiums of the champions of the AQ conferences. Do you want to take a guess of what UH’s records is when playing at non-last-place AQ conference teams? The games will held in December also, which means cold weather and issues with air travel that complicate plans.

A playoff would KILL the academics of the UH football players. They would need to fly to some stadium on the mainland to play a game, and if they won would need to play each successive game on the mainland. Do they stay on the mainland for weeks when classes are ending and final exams are being held? Or do they fly back to Hawaii after each game and then fly out a few days later when they find out where their next game is?

Bottom line is that a playoff system would not necessarily result in UH getting invited or getting any more money than the BCS system provides now. The best case scenario would be for the WAC Champion needing to open the playoffs at Alabama or Ohio State, with the next round at Florida or Texas. Lose in the first round and things will probably be like how the NCAA basketball tournament is run…many conferences with autobids get less than $1 million from the NCAA basketball tournament while the Big East gets $20 million.

  45. Garret October 27, 2010 7:23 am

Shoko does correctly point out that WAC policy is to share all NCAA money equally among teams. So, no matter who sends their football team to the NCAA playoffs, the other teams in the WAC will get an equal share of the winnings. Split 6/7/8/9 ways, that money comes out to FAR less than what UH gets now.

  46. JTsteez October 27, 2010 7:24 am

  48. RainbowCliff October 27, 2010 7:26 am

Mr whitey, there is no exposure IF teams Denver University, Sacramento State, UC Davis or Montana State filling the holes left by the defectors.

Texas State or University of San Antonio Texas are no answers either. The teams you have mention are all in MAJOR football conferences and Notre Dame has it’s name and national TV contract with NBC despite being average over the years.

Those teams you mention still get recognized by espn win or lose because of the conference

they belong to. For a possible BIG game vs. Boise State all Hawaii can get is espnu despite Hawaii good play this year and Boise national respect !

Sir, it has to get better and staying in the WAC with it’s SAD comissioner is doing more harm then good in my opinion. Always a pleasure to read your words of thoughts and wisdom !

I know we like to bash the WAC abondoners, but I ask myself the following question and I am unable to answer it without feeling conflicted. So I pose the same question to you, my trusted Tsaiko Warrior Nation:

If the MWC offered an invite to Hawaii that was fair, should Hawaii take it or turn it down? Why?

  51. RainbowCliff October 27, 2010 7:35 am

  52. Garret October 27, 2010 7:35 am

    longdistance808,

JD already offered travel subsidies to the MWC if they would take UH and they turned UH down. Of course UH would take an invite to the MWC…UH has shown by its actions what it thinks.

  53. Michigan Warrior October 27, 2010 7:36 am

Just keep winning… just keep winning…

For those who keep saying to go Indy… you guys rich enough to donate money to cover all expenses for the athletic department? We won’t have any conference paychecks coming our way. And who do we schedule in the middle of our season over the next few years? Everyone else will be in the middle of their conference seasons. We’ve had this argument before. Think the remaining WAC schools would want us? They’d feel the same way we do about Fresno, Reno, and Boise. Already got BYU on schedule for the next 4 years, so can’t count them twice. Notre Dame has one open date in each of the next couple of years… but, who says they’ll even consider accepting us? High-probability home games include several D-IAA schools on an annual basis. Will that bring in the local fans?

Without an established, winning program; without overflowing coffers due to generous boosters; with lots of additional expenses tied to non-football sports, how will we succeed as an Indepedent and draw full-house paying fans with lesser competition on the field and in the arena?

Convince me with real, solid answers, (to the finances, football scheduling, and all non-football sports), then I’ll say ‘jump’. I mean, even the Big West hasn’t publicly given us their blessing yet, so are we gonna even count that? Otherwise, all we can do is stay the course and keep winning.

  54. Stretch October 27, 2010 7:36 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

  57. Stretch October 27, 2010 7:38 am

Now – yes, I think UH should and would take it.

Before – no, it just shows the character of leadership that those schools have. If Fresno and Nevada held firm, like Utah St, the MWC might have been in the same situation that the WAC is in now.

  58. HawaiianTime October 27, 2010 7:39 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!

Congratulations and Kudos to David Graves. I’m all for keeping and building the WAC to become a powerhouse of the West. Time to make the WAC a stronger more legitimate conference to beat all other conferences.

  59. Michigan Warrior October 27, 2010 7:39 am

So, why is it that all other college football divisions can hold playoffs, inclusive of all conferences, and crown a true national champion… but the FBS cannot?

  60. Pomai October 27, 2010 7:43 am

If now I think JD would stay in the WAC, before he would have gone. We only have to choices WAC or Independent, and for now IMHO staying in the WAC is best.

  61. Pomai October 27, 2010 7:44 am

My before was before BSu left.

  62. Michigan Warrior October 27, 2010 7:45 am

    #57… I agree with Stretch.

Prior to Fresno and Reno leaving, had the UH been offered, I think we would’ve denied it. I think we would’ve tried to get BYU’s non-football sports, and then possibly worked on SDSU and UNLV to come over.

Now that THAT plan died, with Fresno and Reno leaving to join Boise, if we received an invite with the right terms, I think we’d leave.

RESPECTED more then the WEAK WAC despite losing BYU and UTAH !

  65. Garret October 27, 2010 7:49 am

    Pomai,

How often does the NCAA do things right? We also have to keep in mind that what UH fans might think of as “right” might not be the same thing as Big 10 or Pac-12 fans. Remember, the AQ schools outnumber the non-AQ schools so the playoff system will be weighted to the AQ schools.

The most likely thing to happen for a football playoff would be to have a basketball-like structure. And in that structure UH would get *less* money than they get now.

  66. BleedGreen808 October 27, 2010 7:50 am

  68. Last Call October 27, 2010 7:54 am

Someone here yesterday suggested an interesting option .Assuming that the Big West would take all of our other teams which I’m sure they would tell the WAC (don’t ask them) we’ll leave our football team in the WAC ( this would satisfy all of you WAC lovers ) but we’re moving all of our other teams to the Big West, this would satisfy those of us who see the WAC as a dead end street.

It’s time we give them options instead of them dictating our future. If they don’t like this proposal then screw them and go indy.

  69. RainbowCliff October 27, 2010 7:55 am

#67 haawarrior: MAN that’s funny as I LOVE your dream !

  70. Garret October 27, 2010 7:57 am

We cannot just ignore that *before* Nevada and Fresno were invited to the MWC, Karl Benson was telling WAC schools that BYU was *not* sure to come to the WAC. Benson stated that there was a chance that BYU would go to the WCC.

I mentioned weeks ago on this blog how Benson wanted BYU to pledge to the WAC for 5 years, with BYU being forced to break its work and pay $2 million if it wanted to leave early. So, if the Big 12 invited BYU, they would be stuck in a difficult situation with not wanting to break a contract. The WCC offered to take BYU without a commitment from BYU. So, the WCC used the WAC’s loyalty pledge against the WAC and could have gotten BYU even if Fresno/Nevada stayed in the WAC.

To insist that the only reason that BYU didn’t join the WAC for non-football teams is because Fresno and Nevada left…is just burying our heads in the sand. Benson’s e-mails to/from Utah State were released via a FOIA act, and I’m sure that Fresno/Nevada have similar e-mails saved.

“Are you ready to watch the Warriors vs. Denver University,

No I’m not I actually shivr at the thought but I’m just looking for something that would satisfy all of us.

The Lets Stay in the WAC option isn’t getting a lot of support from UH fans, athletes or coaches but the decision isn’t up to this group.

Right now we have the upper hand over the WAC they are in no position to dictate to us and we need to take advantage of that.

  74. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 8:12 am

Go independent and those just might be the type of teams you will bring in because the better teams will be playing their in conference games and/or post season championship playoff games.

Got to talk with the four independent teams.. Then see where Idaho, Utah, La Tech, NMSU and SJSU stand. If the WAC dissolves, what will they do? Will SJSU drop football? Will NMSU? Will Utah be able to go elsewhere as well as La Tech? Or will they be willing to continue to play each other as independents mixed in with the other 4 independent teams, namely, Army, Navy, BYU and Notre Dame. I wouldn’t mind seeing us play all 9 regularly as the core group…

  75. Slugger October 27, 2010 8:13 am

  83. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 27, 2010 8:31 am

    haawarrior,

that would basically be the WAC again…something the MWC schools got together to get the hell away from to begin with. haha.

then again if we actually have consistent years of top 25 rankings…not like once every 5 years kinda thing then we might one day see a realignment in 10-20 years where Hawaii can be in with the “Cool” crowd.

  90. Slugger October 27, 2010 8:41 am

    Garret,

I don’t get ESPNU with the UH season ticket-PPV away-game package. I do get some other sports channels, but not ESPNU (or MLB, etc.).

Since a deal has been worked out to broadcast the game on BOTH the PPV & ESPNU channel, on the off chance that someone doesn’t have the full Digital Sports Pack w/ ESPNU, UH can make some money by people buying the PPV game.

#67 – I was just mulling over a similar idea.

Hawaii is the westernmost location in the US. It stands to reason that the WAC could be HQd here with a brilliant and fearless leader (I’m sure we could think of someone) who can inspire a new level of participation.

Does Alaska have a football team somewhere?

    Just thinking…

I know there are “divisions” in the NCAA but we all know that there are some parts of the structure that don’t work in today’s world. Why not take a leadership role in reconstructing our conference in a way that the BEST SCHOOL in the WAC (Hawaii) could do?

I know some folks like to build a new house on a clean lot but sometimes the homes with the most character are the ones that have some history along with the shiny modern fixtures.

Then when the football team continues to be just another (yawn) WAC team maybe the WAC lovers will wake up. Meanwhile the rest of us will be enjoying success in the Big West.I’ll even start doing road trips.

maybe you are right. ill try search for it but i thought they didn’t have a entry fee or one of the schools didn’t have a fee.

Who said the WAC is a weak conference? That is perception, what people think. Look at reality, what is. This season Boise State is No. 3 and Hawaii and Nevada are in the top thirty.

Years ago do you remember the Rainbow Classic Basketball Tournament in December? For some strange reason the teams that came to Hawaii to participate were always in the top national rankings. The sports media credited one of the reasons for the high rankings was that the colleges scheduled a trip to Hawaii as an incentive to recruit top players. I think the same thing is going on in football, and because Hawaii is on the schedule the teams in the conference get stronger. I agree with Michigan Warrior. Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State may regret ever leaving the WAC conference with Hawaii on the schedule.

Look at BYU and where its football program is now. It is going independent, and getting Hawaii back on its schedule because the school knows that is an incentive for recruiting.

What the WAC should do is build the program around Hawaii in terms of selection of schools, travel, etc. Other schools build strong programs when Hawaii is on their schedule. That is a fact.

Hope Hawaii remains in the WAC and it gets favorable treatment. Colleges that join the conference will get stronger. It is a win-win situation!

We stay with our Wac brothers or we go Indy….

  114. Garret October 27, 2010 9:14 am

The Pac-10 *waived* its entry fees for Colorado and Utah.

Colorado had its entry fees waived because their Athletic Department is broke and they are giving up $6+ million in exit fees for leaving the Big 12.

Utah is paying no entry fee, but they get *no* money from the conference in their first year and only 50% of a regular school in the second year.

  115. haawarrior October 27, 2010 9:14 am

The WAC isn’t going to build around Hawaii–the conference is moving east, to Texas, for new teams. The WAC is trying to hold on to La Tech and make things more attractive for them to stay…before, everybody in the WAC (including them) wanted them to go to the C-USA, but now the WAC needs them.

  118. haawarrior October 27, 2010 9:17 am

  120. manoa October 27, 2010 9:20 am

There are no real good options, so we are stuck, like ST says with the plan B’s. Even joining the MWC now and forking out travel subsidies and fees is not the greates, but if invited we would need to take it.

The latest dagger in the heart for going independent is the decision by all the PAC 12 teams to go to two divisions and play a 9 game conference schedule plus a 10th championship game. Predictably, the Commissioner has also asked the PAC 12 teams to schedule any out of conference games at the start of the season to allow conference scheduling including the championship game. The Big 12 and the Big 10 are already going to 9 conference games from 8, so there are going to be fewer OOC games to pick from.

The “good” news is the other WAC teams which keep football will need to schedule with us, but they will want travel subsidies to play in Hawaii.

  121. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 9:23 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme:

  123. Garret October 27, 2010 9:24 am

It isn’t just perception that bottom of the WAC is in REALLY bad shape. NMSU is rated below half of D-IAA right now and they are cutting $3 million from their already squeezed budget. A WAC conference member had to ask its fans to bring snacks and juice boxes to feed its players after spring practice because they couldn’t afford to feed them…and they are going to cut $3 million more?

It isn’t just perception that La Tech wants to get into C-USA. Karl Benson and La Tech publicly say that La Tech is hoping to get into C-USA. How good does that make the WAC look?

It isn’t just perception that the MWC gets 3x the TV money that the WAC gets…and the WAC will get less once BSU leaves. C-USA also gets 3x the TV money.

It isn’t just perception that the WAC gets less NCAA basketball money than the MWC or C-USA…it is fact because the WAC’s teams haven’t won an NCAA tournament game for years and the MWC gets double the number of teams in the tournament.

It isn’t just perception that BYU went independent and ESPN reportedly gave them $8 million just for their football games…when the entire WAC will get less than half of that to split once BSU leaves. And the fact is that ESPN gave BYU many of the TV spots that the WAC has had until this season is over.

It isn’t just perception that the WAC’s out-of-conference football record is pitifully bad if you look at 2007-today, despite this season being a huge improvement. If you take away the nonconference wins by BSU, the WAC’s nonconference record is even worse.

  125. Garret October 27, 2010 9:27 am

It also isn’t just perception that the WAC has a horrible commissioner. A commissioner is supposed to sell their league, to make their league sound better than it is. How did Benson react to BSU going to the MWC? Benson said that it was a “reward” for BSU’s success…so, the WAC’s own commissioner helped feed the perception that the MWC is a whole level above the WAC.

The previous admin did little to really lobby for UH’s needs and the school has been left in disrepair. Verdict is out for the current one, but at least Chancellor Hinshaw is very visible at a whole bunch of games and the legislature is more aware of UH’s deteriorating facilities.

Unfortunately… the coffers are empty… everywhere

The whole world is in a state of change. Everything from the earth beneath our feet to the way we view the stars is changing.

What we think we know is solely dependent on our educated (or uneducated) POV. I think we will be happiest when we embrace the concept of change and strive to do what is best for humanity at every turn.

“Mathematicians, astronomers, chemical scientists continually disprove and reject the conclusions of the ancients; nothing is fixed, nothing final; everything is continually changing because human reason is progressing along new roads of investigation and arriving at new conclusions every day. In the future much that is announced and accepted as true now will be rejected and disproved. And so it will continue ad infinitum.”

So- I hope our UH decision-makers will first consider what is good for our student-athletes and go from there.

  137. papajoe2 October 27, 2010 9:43 am

#111 James, A long time ago, traveling to Hawaii was used as a “recruiting tool”. Now days, with everything being so expensive, like travel, hotels, meals, transportation, and the risk of losing to a much improved team (compared to pre WAC days), most smaller/mid teams travel to Hawaii a day or 2 before the game and leave Hawaii right after the game, thus not leaving much time to enjoy the beauty and perks that Hawaii has to offer. It becomes more of a business, losing trip to the other teams.

  138. papajoe2 October 27, 2010 10:01 am

Like myself, a lot of Warrior fans were born and raised in Hawaii. Most, if not all the people, especially the ones born and raised here, love Hawaii so much, we cannot comprehend the feeling of an outside school playing a game in Hawaii. Just imagine if Puerto Rico joined the U.S. as the 51st state and had a college playing D1 sports. How would we perceive them as far as traveling with time zones, etc.. Puerto Rico is even has a cheaper cost of living than in Hawaii. At first, teams may want to travel there as a curiosity, but if they start losing, then they will be making all kinds of excuses. So think about. That’s probably how the rest of the teams are thinking about Hawaii’s teams. The negative thoughts on Peurto Rico and why not to play them could be almost endless. Its even cheaper to travel there than Hawaii.

  139. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 10:06 am

    papajoe2,

Playing in Hawaii probably loses it’s luster if there is no travel package involved.. at least a day in the sun or a trip to the Arizona Memorial and Big Mo. With the current budget cutbacks, the schools visiting are cutting their trips short.. it’s all business with a red eye flight back the day of the game. That’s no fun for the Coaches and players.

  140. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 10:07 am

To them.. it’s like a long delayed stop over in some airport.. you can only see “Hawaii” through the windows of your plane and bus.

  141. al October 27, 2010 10:08 am

i heard that the reason our new turf will cost so much is that it will be black turf and the dyes used to create this deep, everlasting black is way more expensive than green.

  142. al October 27, 2010 10:09 am

    on another note….

the rumor of the black turf really made boise state so concerned, that coupled with the fact that they also heard that hawaii was going to move the boise state home games to 1:30 pm during the heat of the day had some influence on them accepting the mwc invite.

  145. ge October 27, 2010 10:19 am

The WAC has helped programs such as Boise State and Nevada improve and fluorish. Other up and coming programs such as Idaho and Utah State have improved since their entry and are/should be competitive with Hawaii in the present and near future. If not, enjoy Hawaii being the top dog for awhile.

As far as rivalries go, once Hawaii loses to these schools, and or others, interest will grow and rivalries will develop very quickly.

If programs such as Portland State, Denver U., and UC Davis want to improve their programs and entering the WAC, that’s great. The Metropolitan areas of Portland and Denver are great areas, with infrastructure. i.e. airports. Which cities are preferable to visit, Portland, Denver, or Boise and Fresno? Also a UC campus is a step up over the Cal State schools academically and would improve that aspect of the conference. Sounds better than going independent, imo.

    ..

  146. Hypothetical questions are interesting, in longdistance 808’s question of accepting a MWC invite NOW after what FSU and UNR did to screw the remaining WAC members, it is no question we should accept, but as Stretch mentioned, I AGREE, that back then I would have and I have a feeling that maybe even UH would have opted to stick to the WAC agreement despite an offer from the MWC back then.

Then was then, NOW is now. Two different scenarios so with that being said, Fresno State and Nevada can still ROT IN HELL.

For sure I can promise everyone here that if LaTech or Utah State bolt today or anyday in the future, I WILL NOT BLAME THEM. Then was “then” and NOW is now. Two different situations to be sure.

  147. Black turf is good on paper but DUMB in reality.

A lot of mainland football teams whine about a lot of manini stuff, but with black turf, people should forget about noon or day games and I don’t think I have to explain why.

Second: For those of you who are interested in supporting our work with a homeless services organization – the Family Promise program which provides a wide range of services to families with children by working with faith-based communities of all flavors – DrDoc and I would like to invite you, your SigOth, and your kids or grandkids to attend the dinner we’re serving on Saturday, November 6, from 5:30 or so to 7 pm. No work, no charge – just eat roast turkey & sides plus a great dessert, talk story, shoot some hoops with the teens, and learn more about how to help a very important sub-set of homeless folks as well as finding out ways to help address a wide range multiple homelessness issues.

What you can do right now is to vote YES on the Honolulu City & County Charter Amendment in the General Election to set up a separate housing office to address multiple housing issues. With O`ahu’s population expected to rise by 50% in the next 12 years, we need to start addressing these issues now. NOTE: Of the 50 largest cities in the United States, Honolulu is only one of three which does not have a housing office

Third – for those of you who would like to get involved in our PLANT A NATIVE TREE program, our next planning meeting is on Thursday, November 4, from 5 pm to 6:30 pm at Mocha Java in Ward Center. We’re shutting it down promptly at 6:30 and will be heading on up to The Stan for the Wahine’s season-opening basketball game against Chaminade. Tickets are really, really cheap – and the seating is open. Click my name for more information about the meeting.

Fourth – Mark Sunday, November 14, anytime between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm on your calendars. Again, click my name above for more details. Afterwards, we plan to go watch Sunday night football at a local sports bar and eat good food. Please join us.

Off to work – back late this evening. DrDoc and I plan to watch the Gigantics ejupp the Rays at Ruby Tuesday’s

Might as well go and put a pillow over my family members while they sleep.

    I ain’t gonna be a little b—- about it!!!

Doesn’t the NCAA have a rule on turf color must be green although some schools like Boise State got grandfather in ?

  152. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 10:35 am

yeah.. but what shade of green?

  153. Garret October 27, 2010 10:36 am

    Liz,

Due to a lot of bad decisions (some UH’s fault like back when UH refused to sign the loyalty pledge and SMU/Rice/etc. left) and the difficult economy, the WAC doesn’t have many options now. This is what I’d like to see happen, though:

    1. Replace Karl Benson with one of the #2 or #3 person from one of the biggest conferences, preferably the Big 10. The Pac-12 got someone from the Big 10 to take care of all of their TV deals and the WAC could use similar expertise.

    2. Invite Texas State, UT-SA, and Montana. Why? Those appear to be the only 3 D-IAA teams in the west that are ready to move up to D-IA…if the economy was different the WAC would have more choices.

    3. Push every WAC school to elevate its men’s basketball team. Football costs a ton of money and takes years to turn around and some schools like NMSU, SJSU, Utah State, Idaho, and La Tech are fundamentally limited in what they can spend. However, a school can get a solid basketball team quickly with a good coaching selection and basketball facilities are a lot cheaper. As basketball money increases, football and the rest of the sports will get more money.

    NCAA basketball money comparison:

    WAC: $3.09 million

    Missouri Valley: $4.33 million

    C-USA: $9.1 million

Big East: $19.4 million (this data is old, they are over $20 million for 09-10)

    4. Get the new WAC commissioner to start working on a comparison of what could be obtained from a WAC TV Network (a true network like what the Big 10 has, not what the WAC has now that doesn’t bring in the money), an ESPN deal, and deals with other major sports companies (Fox, Turner, Universal/Comcast, CBS, etc.). Don’t just accept what ESPN wants to give the WAC, get other bids and you can get a lot more. For example, the ACC ended up getting more than double what ESPN had been planning to give them in their TV negotiations over the summer…ESPN had to raise their offer once someone else started bidding. NBC/Universal need sports inventory. CBS/CS needs sports inventory. Fox needs sports inventory. Get at least 2 of them to bid and ESPN will pay a lot more, or maybe one of them makes some crazy bid and the WAC will be financially set.

    5. Get the new commissioner to make a scheduling arrangement with the Big 10 since they have the most TV money to throw around (that is why I’d prefer the new commissioner to have Big 10 ties). Colorado is getting $1.3 million for a paycheck game at a Big 10 school and I posted articles about how the increased TV money might result in the Big 10 soon paying *$2 million* for a home game. Many WAC schools (SJSU, La Tech, NMSU, and Idaho come to mind) already play paycheck games–if they can make more money, they can improve their programs. Make the option for 2-for-1 deals also, 2 games at the Big 10 school’s stadium for 1 at a WAC stadium, with the WAC school getting $2 million in compensation.

The Big 10 will be paying *somebody* to play those paycheck games. I’d rather it be the WAC than the MAC or Sun Belt. No non-AQ conference has struck a scheduling deal with an AQ conference, but it makes sense for one reason: TV. The Big 10 would have flexibility to schedule all 14 weeks of the season to maximize TV revenue for their network, which could only happen at the conference level since this has to be done while conference schedules are set.

The 2 keys: basketball success (UH seems to have taken a step up with Gib’s recruiting) and new leadership. Unfortunately, nothing like this will happen with Benson in charge and the WAC Presidents seem to like the job that he’s doing.

  154. NCAA October 27, 2010 10:40 am

No rules on turf color. I just asked myself. LOL

  155. Markazulu October 27, 2010 10:43 am

Coach Shaw said we would be graduating four linemen this year. The young freshmen offensive linemen are an outstanding group. The defensive coaches have been telling the offensive coaches what a good job the young offensive linemen are doing against the defense. Coach Shaw feels very good about the offensive line situation. He’s looking for 4 or 5 more high school recruits which should get us out of the JC recruiting cycle. It’s much better having linemen in the program for 4 or 5 years.

  156. NCAA October 27, 2010 10:44 am

Well I suppose a white turf would make it difficult to see the white markings (hash, goal line, sideline, etc.)

  157. TYaiea October 27, 2010 10:44 am

Last Call, checked wikipidia; there is no ncaa rule re color of playing field. schools may use any color for playing field and end zones. IMUA

With all the criticism Benson is getting now, it’s interesting to see the praise he was getting a few years ago. Just click on the article in the Advertiser back in 2008.

Word is that Benson’s Pac-10 counterpart, Tom Hansen, will announce retirement plans shortly. Hansen, who has been on the job since 1983, is the longest-serving commissioner in major college athletics and a force on the national landscape. The MWC’s Craig Thompson and Benson are two names tossed around as possible candidates, though it is anybody’s guess where the Pac-10 might look when it comes time.

Benson’s name was tossed out as PAC 10 commish!! LOL He must have had good PR people working for him.

Why would we want to leave the WAC if we have the prime opportunity to be the bulls of the conference? national recognition? Trust me, you will still get it if you win win win all the time. Are we talking about BCS recognition? Fat chance. Cherish the 07 season. It may never ever come around these parts again.

Like my good friend A-Joe, I say we stay in the WAC, ride out the storm, and rule the conference. Winning brings support. Support brings $$$.

CBS Television’s “Hawaii Five-0” continued to lose viewers to ABC’s “Castle,” according to the final Nielsen ratings released yesterday.

But the CBS reboot of the classic crime show is getting a bigger benefit from DVRs than any other show on prime-time television, according to the Associated Press.

In an episode featuring beaches from the North Shore to Portlock, “Five-0” drew 10.23 million viewers Monday night to 11.32 million for “Castle,” according to CBS. NBC’s “Chase” drew 4.89 million.

Last week, “Five-0” drew 10.94 million viewers to finish second in the hour to “Castle,” which drew 10.95 million viewers. That same night, NBC’s “Chase” drew 5.18 million.

Through the first three weeks of the TV season, the Monday night drama picked up an average of 3.3 million viewers when Nielsen added people who saw the show on their digital video recorders within the next week.

“Hawaii Five-0” wasn’t one of the week’s top 10 shows through live viewing, but it becomes one when DVR usage is added in. The show is popular with men, and CBS has speculated that many of its viewers watch “Monday Night Football” live and record the drama for later.

“This is becoming the way people are watching television,” said Kelly Kahl, CBS’ chief scheduling executive. “The overnight rating may be a quick barometer of how shows are doing but not the entire story.”

Two Thursday night dramas — CBS’ “The Mentalist” and ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” — were the next two biggest gainers from DVR usage. The only comedy among the top 10 is ABC’s “Modern Family,” which is having a strong sophomore season.

“Modern Family,” which has taken advantage of its Emmy Award for best comedy to start off its sophomore season strongly, is the only comedy among the top DVR’d shows.

“By and large, the most popular shows are getting more popular” through DVR usage, Kahl said.

The return of quarterback Brett Favre to Green Bay with the Minnesota Vikings brought more than 25 million viewers to Sunday night football on NBC. It was easily the week’s most popular show, the most-watched game since NBC started the Sunday night franchise five years ago and the most-watched NFL game in October in 14 years, Nielsen said.

In prime time, CBS was the most popular network for the fifth week in a row, Nielsen said. CBS has won among all viewers and in key demographics for every week of the new TV season so far. That’s the longest season-opening streak for a broadcast network since 1997.

With Fox airing baseball’s World Series starting today, a sixth week in a row could be difficult for CBS.

CBS averaged 11.6 million viewers (7.1 rating, 12 share).

    ABC was second with 8.9 million (5.6, 9), NBC had 8 million (5.0, 8), Fox had 7.5 million (4.5, 8), the CW had 2.1 million (1.3, 2) and ION Television had 1.2 million (0.8, 1).

A ratings point represents 1,159,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation’s estimated 115.9 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Oct. 18-24, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships were: NFL Football: Minnesota at Green Bay, NBC, 25.68 million; “NCIS,” CBS, 19.41 million; “Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kick,” NBC, 19.34 million; “Dancing with the Stars,” ABC, 19.33 million; “NCIS: Los Angeles,” CBS, 16 million; “60 Minutes,” CBS, 15.79 million; “Dancing with the Stars Results,” ABC, 15.53 million; “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” CBS, 14.96 million; “Criminal Minds,” CBS, 14.46 million; and “The Mentalist,” CBS, 14.42 million.

NBC’s “Nightly News” topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.9 million viewers (5.2, 11). ABC’s “World News” was second with 6.9 million (4.7, 10), and “CBS Evening News” had 5.3 million viewers (3.6, 7).

    CBSPRESSEXPRESS.COM

The CBS police drama “Hawaii Five-0” again lost viewers to ABC’s “Castle” in the latest Nielsen ratings. Alex O’Loughlin, left, Scott Caan and Daniel Dae Kim star in “Hawaii Five-0,” which is filmed on location in Hawaii.

I apologize for putting this in the sports blog but I am so proud of Hawaii Five-O and how it’s helping our economy and creating employment for us. Even though Boise State is our for, I feel sorry for them in getting cheated in the BCS rankings. We need a playoff system.

    I see a step #6.

Next year when we play FSU at home, which is usually a well attended spirited game, the HTA and UH would use that opportunity to fly the tourism and university folks from Japan and China to Hawaii to a wonderful tailgate party, then the game. The next day the talks are about having UH play one football game with one of their college all-star teams. If they do not have one yet, play baseball or basketball and televise. Oh yeah, part of the team from those places would e television execs. Talk about televising UH games (tape if necessary) in those countries in towns where the colleges just aprticipated with UH.

Bring women’s volleyball next. Tie up the television contracts with UH and really open that market. UH would benefit from merchandise sales too.

Now, when we start winning, even is a weak WAC, but have a great deal with those Asian markets, someone will come calling to see if we would join their party and bring along our Asian marketplace friends. At that point, paying subsidies would not be a point of negotiation. Heck, if we were able to do this and do it well, we should go independent, create a partnership with ND and really make that market go.

I saw the UH President MRC Greenwood at a game last season. I think it was one of the final WVB season games at home.

At a HIFF movie on Saturday, I thought I recognized a UH VP I had met a couple of years ago standing behind me. Oops, it was former UH President McClain who’s back teaching in the College of Business. Nevah know who you’ll meet in town…

    Speaking of turf colors….

What color shirts are we wearing this Saturday? Green? Green. Al, you can wear what you want…

  167. diehard fan October 27, 2010 11:12 am

Remember when Boise was asked to join the WAC around 2001, everyone was saying no one will go to watch them play. The same thing is being said about some of the possible new teams being considered for the WAC.

Basketball may get some good new teams per Tsai. If UH goes independent in football, there won’t be any improvement in the teams they would be able to schedule, besides the non-WAC games they already have on their schedule.

    1. #111 James: – Colleges that join the WAC conference will get stronger.

That is so true look at Idaho, Utah State and others get’s Hawaii’s best players and other states because they can come back to Hawaii every other year. And since joining all these school have upgraded their program.

Look at even where Boise State was or Nevada – Reno is now. Comparing to where they first joined we thought of them as same as Idaho and NM State was.

    2. #145 ge: If programs such as Portland State, Denver U., and UC Davis want to improve their programs and entering the WAC, that’s great. The Metropolitan areas of Portland and Denver are great areas.

I’m with you I’d rather go to Portland and Denver than Boise or Fresno. I’ve been to both Boise and Fresno there is nothing to see or do there. If UH schedule a game at Portland or Denver I’m sure more people will travel there. I sure will. And these schools will most definitely improve their program just like Boise and Nevada did.

    3. And Nevada coach Ault not wanting to play us anymore (He’s a sore loser) that sure wasn’t the answer before the last match (maybe he was being polite before the match) but I’m sure he was using Hawaii as a recruiting tool. He will regret saying that because lots of Hawaii fans travels to Reno as well as Vegas then most other schools supporters do.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

redzone & iwwthm – I think UH sports must be in the WAC unless there aren’t enough schools to warrant conference play. That’s why the women’s sports had to move from the Big West back in the 90s. Warrior vb is in the MPSF because no other WAC school fields a team. MPSF men’s vb is made up of some California schools, UH & BYU.

Hawaii just needs to focus on there team an let the AD deal with it. Trust the commissioner. Winning is key no matter where they go. An when Hawaii has the opportunity to play against USC or Colorado, or any one of the “Big Boys from the Big Name Conferences” they need to take advantage of it. An try to stop the bleeding with all the blow outs that happen. Play um hard every time then you’ll get recognition people will forget if your to inconsistent. Hawaii beat Alabama in 02 but thanks to loses against Georgia and Florida people still think we “never” would win against the SEC or any conference. Just play hard consistent tough Warrior football an focus on this season.

Gorn is surprised not one of the remaining WAC-6 “CEO’s” (aka presidents) have even hinted at a lack of confidence in Sir Karl and as such, to start the process of ousting him from his throne in Denver. I said it before… I don’t have problems with Hawaii staying in the WAC (to buy time) but the status quo cannot remain. UH officials need to have various contingencies in place, our athletic programs need to win, Sir Karl cannot remain commish of the WAC going forward…

I still standby my opinion that we need to be careful about independence. We came from there (albeit a different time) but it took Jack Burns vision over a decade to come to fruition. We haven’t had that kind of leadership for over 3 decades which is why UH is in the position it is now. The WAC may look cruddy as hell but it is something we at least have for the time being. Once Boise, Fresneck and Northern Nevada leave, Hawaii should have ZERO excuse for not dominating the conference and winning the WAC football championship every year we remain in it. But we also need to take care of OOC games and that needs to start in 2011 and continue going forward. Win those OOC games on a consistent basis and that is how you gain national respect. This is why the loss against Colorado was damaging.

A few weeks ago after the Colorado game, I posted about wanting the coaching staff to prove me wrong after what I viewed as the same ongoing issues plaguing the team as I felt these were costing us the ability to win very winnable games. Both USC and Colorado were winnable had the level of execution (both on the field and on the sidelines) been complete in all facets.

I wasn’t going to post until AFTER the Idaho game but I will say that for the most part, the coaches have managed to do a good job at addressing most of these issues. The results show in the body of work since then but it doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement after each game. That article about McMackin learning to delegate and leaving things in the hands of his coordinators was one of my biggest beefs that I’d been alluding to before on this blog and I for one am glad to see him face up to the fact that as head coach, you have to allow your assistants to make the call.

Digressing, Idaho is an extremely important game that no one is looking past because they (coaches and players) know what is at stake. It is not just about the showdown the week after against Boise. What is it also about is finetuning the level of execution from coaching staff on down in preparation for the next game (which just happens to be Boise) because if we want to beat Boise, we are going to have to execute/minimize mistakes as best as possible in every single facet (offense, defense, special teams, side line management, playcalling, etc).

I’ll put this out now, UH takes care of this finetuning business against Idaho and I feel we have a very good shot at taking out Boise. It is not like we haven’t played them before. We know their tendencies. Aside from last years blowout, we have found ways to slow down their offensive attack in the previous few years. In 2008 (@ Boise) with an anemic Frankenstein offense, the final score was 27-7 (if we hadn’t had such a dropoff in offense, that game was winnable). In 2007, we all know what took place. In 2006, we dominated the game BUT special play breakdown is why we lost at Boise. In 2005, we were breaking in a new young QB by the name of Colt Brennan who was still learning the system and we only lost 44-41 (Hawkins was HC but Petersen was still the OC). Look at what UH has done the past several weeks… if they can put everything all together as complete as possible, this game is more than winnable especially when you consider that BSU hasn’t been characteristically mistake/penalty free this season. And when was Gorn ever this bullish on this blog?

  185. phlyinhi October 27, 2010 12:30 pm

UH should stay in the deflated WAC and be the premier team in the conference. They need to win it year in year out. And, the will draw a lot of national attention whether the conference sucks or not. Look at Boise. The power rating for the WAC (as crappy as it is) is the highest it’s ever been. If Boise, Fresno, and Nevada weren’t so hasty, the WAC would of been stronger than the MWC. BYU would of came to the WAC (for non-football). Utah is gone and soon TCU will leave. The MWC would have nothing. The lower tier MWC teams would be begging to come back to the WAC. That conference would of faced its demise. But, here we are now stuck with an incompetent commissioner bringing the conference further into the crapper. Its just up to Hawaii to dominate.

…of course you know i was only joking.

  187. papajoe2 October 27, 2010 12:33 pm

I think the football team should stay in the WAC. With 2 Texas schools, we can establish a recruiting base there. I’m not sure who it was, but someone said on a previous blog that the 2 Texas schools are easy to reach by air, as major airports are near by. I wouldn’t be too thrilled about Montana joining the WAC though. Doesn’t it get like below 0 degrees sometimes? As for the rest of the sports, I think we should move to the Big West or some other California based conference. It would not only save Hawaii money but also the other WAC schools as they don’t have to send their non income sports the Aloha State. While some of the additions to the WAC may not have a football team, Hawaii could fit into their football schedule and help the WAC with football numbers. Which ever way we go, I will back JD’s decision, as I think he, being a business man, will make whatever decision is right for UH.

this weekend’s game is a big test for our team.

it is hard to stay up for four games in a row let alone 5, 6, 7.

if we get by idaho this saturday, i say that we will beat their idahoan cousins in boise the following week as well.

somebody better go stretch his vacation plans because after saturday i think he has to renegotiate his vacation schedule.

  189. Buffoman October 27, 2010 12:42 pm

One possible solution is the work through the defection. Heck the mess belongs to Benson so let him clean it up.

When he’s done, to avoid any more damage, fire him. Then these six so called intelligent people from the remaining universities need to hire a business consultant whose specialty is collegiate sports. Create a new JD, one that is very aggressive and out of the box (we have nothing to loose at this time so why the heck not) and look at benchmarks such as XXX dolar increase in television contract revenue, opening new markets, etc.. Then pay the guy crazy dollars (match Pac 10 or Southeast Conference) with specific benchmarks and timelines.

Then let her/him go. We’ll know really quick if the WAC is a piece of floating debris or it has the potential to be better than the MWC, ACC or Big East. Anything less would be agreeing that its okay to be mediocre. Let this person position the conference before inviting teams to get back to “normal”. If this person can create that new level for the conference, who is to say that Arizona and Arizona State would not want to come back to the WAC. To be in that position, the WAC would have to be spectacular and you’re not going to get there with re-threaded commissioners or AD’s looking for active retirement.

  190. Stretch October 27, 2010 12:43 pm

al – I didn’t want people getting too excited thinking that there is a possibility of having a Hawaii version of the “inferno” at Eastern Washington. For those who thought the blue turf was hard on your eyes, check out this video.

  191. papajoe2 October 27, 2010 12:46 pm

#185 phlyinhi, In my opinion, the only way that the bottom tier teams in the MWC will want to come back to the WAC is if we score a better TV package deal than the MWC. Why else should they come if they wouldn’t get anything? It still is a business with their school presidents, chancellors, ADs, etc., so taking a pay cut doesn’t make sense. Now, if we get rid of Bensen and have a new leader with clout or big balls, then maybe we could get a better TV deal and draw some other teams that we can pick and choose. Who knows? Maybe even a 12/14/16 team conference.

  192. Kapahulu October 27, 2010 12:49 pm

I also agree that the WAC needs to get rid of Karl Benson. How many teams have left the WAC since he has been Commissioner?

Since the focus now seems to be on Conference TV money, I would like to see the new WAC Commissioner job go to Rick Blangiardi, if he could be talked into it.

Think about it. He helped to bring one of the best College TV coverages to UH. What we need now is someone who understands TV contracts.

  193. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 12:52 pm

I wonder if Riley Wallace would make a good Commish?

  194. Not an Expert October 27, 2010 12:52 pm

Last Call it was I making the following statement.

I had stated UH sould stay in the WAC for now in football and move to the Big West for all

their other sport programs. Based on the rumors of the settlement, Hawaii would have the Aces in hand to negotiate with a hapless Benson.

I believe it will be an upgrade for all the other sports and traveling only to California will be easier and less costly for our teams. Some of this savings will help subsidize the travel cost for the Big West Schools.

For football not knowing how this split would affect the future of the WAC, one thing for certain it will take years to build up their image and prestige (if possible) in order to demand more money from the networks. Thus the WAC should create a maximum 8 team football conference to qualify as a legit conference. Allow each school to negotiate their own TV

package for the other 5 games 6 if they play in Hawaii. A percentage to go to the WAC to build a reserve to assist the league to promote and assist schools when necessary.

Not able to get good TV payouts, than the WAC school can play an AQ schools at their place and garner the $2 million. Each WAC school could play 3 of those games which can earn them $6 million a year. Will take their lumps but in time with the money if used properly can help build up each school’s program. When they get up to par with the AQ schools than money will flow in like it is for them.

    Hey Gang…just a quick hump day funny….

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically.

This virus is called Weekly Overload Recreational Killer (WORK).

If you receive WORK from your boss, any of your colleagues or anyone else via any means whatsoever – DO NOT TOUCH IT!!! This virus will wipe out your private life entirely. If you should come into contact with WORK you should immediately leave the premises.

Take two good friends to the nearest liquor store and purchase one or both of the antidotes – Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) and Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

You may immediately forward this medical alert to five friends. If you do not have five friends, you have already been infected and WORK is, sadly, controlling your life. Get help immediately.”

  196. papajoe2 October 27, 2010 12:59 pm

All this talk about colored fields, when Aloha Stadium first opened, I wondered out loud, why did we have orange seats in the bottom section? The UH is a state institution and the Aloha Stadium is also a state institution, so why not green seats on the lower sections? With OUR fans wearing green, it would disguise the empty seats on national TV. Didn’t they just install new seats in the lower sections? Orange again? How many times were the orange seats changed since the opening of the stadium? Was there a sale on the orange seats? Green seats cost more? Does it take more labor to install green seats than orange seats? Oh, I forgot, common sense yeah.

  205. d1島 October 27, 2010 1:32 pm

    Garret,

A playoff system would probably have the lower-seeded teams open with first-round games at the home stadiums of the champions of the AQ conferences. Do you want to take a guess of what UH’s records is when playing at non-last-place AQ conference teams? The games will held in December also, which means cold weather and issues with air travel that complicate plans.

If this were in place this season, were Hawaii to win the conference and represent the WAC, the 1st round of a 16-team play-off would be on the Dec 18-19 weekend which isn’t too bad for travel. But then the fun starts!

The teams that advance to the next round however, face traveling on short notice during X-mas week! 😯 I’m not sure how the logistics of this could be worked out since no city would risk blocking hotel rooms weeks or months in advance on the chance that their team would host a game that week. And that would be just for the teams involved! How about a few (or more) thousand fans!

Some ask how can there be playoffs for every other Division of football?

I know that for D3 ball, last season the Linfield administration was making preliminary plans for getting to the finals during the semi-final week. If they had won and qualified for the finals the school had plans for chartering one jet outta PDX for the team and selling seats to F & F to get to Salem, VA. Even that was logistically trying…can’t imagine what it would be like airlifting thousands of people from one city to the next in a day or two!

WAC commissioner Karl Benson declined to say whether an agreement had been reached in the nearly hour-long meeting today among conference presidents and chancellors.

“There will be no announcement until tomorrow,” Benson told The Star-Advertiser.

BTW, how much does Benson earn now? I know, it’s none of my business, but could be helpful in contract talks with new commish.

  220. Not an Expert October 27, 2010 2:22 pm

The whole football system needs a overhall. However the big boys already getting the big bucks will not want to change their survival and dominance of being the BIG DOGS.

As I stated the non AQ teams and conferences should work together and build an alliance to help all of them to benefit more. The AQ teams that control things with the networks will continue to pluck teams out from the non-AQ conference so no other conference can gain the AQ status. The AQ’s don’t want to share and have the lesser than become their equal.

Thus all non AQ teams to fend for their own self-serving interest and survival. Who could blame them cause that’s how the game is played off the field.

Could it be the non AQ commissioners are being personally subsidized by the AQ conferences. “None dare call it a conspiracy”.

As I stated earlier, pay Southeastern Conference commish or Big 10 dollars and a short leash on defineable, big time milestones. The person signing up has got to have brass you know what and the ability to make waves. What you’re talking about is making waves, ticking off people and taking no prisoners. Heck, the WAC has been laughed at, spat on, dissed and thworn under several buses. If the folks are serious, payback is going to be brutal and everyone is going to have to have the stomach for it. 241. Garret October 27, 2010 3:41 pm

Since the AQ conferences have their bowl games, why can’t all the non-AQ conferences have their own playoff system? Is it feasible?

The non-AQ schools would almost surely get *less* money from a non-AQ playoff than they get from the BCS system.

    To put things in perspective:

The BCS system paid the non-AQ schools slightly over $23.5 million last year.

Ratings for BCS bowls with non-AQ schools included are all in the bottom 10 in BCS bowl history. Get too many non-AQ schools and the BCS TV and ticket money would decrease significantly. Get the non-AQ schools a playoff system and I seriously doubt that the non-AQ schools would get any extra money. The public would see one “real” system and one secondary system…the D-IAA playoff system makes basically no money and the NIT went away once the NCAA basketball tournament eclipsed it.

    More perspective:

Big 10 TV regular-season money last year: $242 million

They have the viewers, they get the money, and that money is projected to hit $500 million per season in a few years!

WAC TV regular-season money last year: $4.5 million

MWC TV regular-season money last year: $13 million

C-USA TV regular-season money last year: $13 million

So, every week of the regular season, the Big 10 earned what the WAC *and* the MWC or C-USA earned for the *entire season!*

If you look at the ratios, the non-AQ schools are getting a far better deal from the bowl system than they would be projected to make from a non-AQ playoff.

The AQ schools know they are giving charity to the non-AQ conferences, but they do it to get Congress off their back and to prevent the conferences they get paycheck teams from going bankrupt. The non-AQ schools know they get more money this way. The Rose Bowl wouldn’t have grown into the huge game it was if it matched up the WAC and MAC or Sun Belt (teams kind of geographically

Karl Benson enthusiastically signed the latest BCS contract right away and praised the BCS system with NONE of the WAC’s schools disagreeing. I would say that is an indication that the WAC does better in the BCS system, but sadly I don’t trust anything from Benson and the WAC Presidents now.

  245. Garret October 27, 2010 3:43 pm

That wasn’t supposed to post yet. The second to last paragraph should be:

The Rose Bowl wouldn’t have grown into the huge game it was if it matched up the WAC and MAC or Sun Belt (teams kind of geographically similar to the Big 10 and Pac-10). The population of states those two conferences bring and the prominence of their Universities (WELL BEFORE the BCS existed) compared to non-AQ schools built up that bowl into a money-printing machine.

  256. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 4:13 pm

Have they decided who will be returning punts, yet?

  257. wafan October 27, 2010 4:13 pm

On the bright side today was a dry Hump Day!!!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  258. wafan October 27, 2010 4:15 pm

Well, that did not look right.

I meant the weather was bright and sunny! No clouds after the fog burned off this morning — it was a dry day.

    Gosh.

    Where is the delete button?!?!

  259. wafan October 27, 2010 4:18 pm

Hopefully the WACy CEOs get their act together and actually do something for the sake of the kids.

Seemingly for the first time in a long time.

With the game on ESPNU I am hopeful it will also be on one of the alternative channel sites.

How about Miah Ostrowski. Is he ready for Punt Return duty? Time to earn that scholie.

afternoon peeps getting excited for tgate and game.

    again stay focused

  263. wafan October 27, 2010 4:24 pm

I like the idea of maybe moving all sports sports, save football, to another conference. Guaranteed football games mid to late season in a conference would be better than scrounging around and begging.

  264. wafan October 27, 2010 4:26 pm

Monarch men of Moscow. Play well this Saturday . . . but not too well!

    Go Warriors!!!

  265. wafan October 27, 2010 4:28 pm

Everyone take garlic cloves to the stadium!

Every time the Warriors score toss the cloves on the field!!!

Mmmmmmmmm . . . garlic fries and garlic mashed potatoes!!!

Parents, dress your son or daughter as Mr. Potato Head. Make sure you have the goofy shoes, Rambis glasses and BJ Penn ears.

Let that kid on the field and the fans would go spud wild!

    Kazz,

Need to talk to you at T-gate.

  270. wafan October 27, 2010 4:38 pm

All this talk of the yummy food at the T-Gate. Looks likeI will be forced to cook up some stuff here. Sadly, I will have to enjoy it all alone.

Need to find some frozen poi.

  271. wafan October 27, 2010 4:39 pm

    Time to kick it.

    Nytal!

  272. As far as this season is concerned, I think the softball team has done their share of scheduling accomodations for the other sports as it is.

Personally speaking, and I might be alone on this one, but I will watch as much of the BSU game as I can and I am off to Manoa for the doubleheader at 12 noon.

  276. gigi-hawaii October 27, 2010 4:49 pm

poor Kazz. Too bad you have to work on Saturdays.

  277. 808ike October 27, 2010 4:51 pm

Pac 10 or Pac 12, you can have Benson with our blessing. When Fresno St. and Nevada announced their defection, he was at USC dorms carrying boxes instead of in his office working. When your conference has a crisis, you know where to find him.

  278. Gigi,

It’s not bad. There are WORSE things…

I don’t mind working with people I like and respect for longer than normal at times.

It’s working with yes-men/women and a two-faced b—- for a minimal amount of time a week is what I could no longer stand.

  279. gigi-hawaii October 27, 2010 4:57 pm

    kazz,

I prefer to be retired. LOL

BTW, babysitting my 8 mo old grandson is not work.

  280. 808ike October 27, 2010 4:58 pm

    gigi-hawaii,

Will be there around noon. For taste, need to ask other Tsaikos and Tsaikettes. Don’t know how my sushi stands up to others.

  281. gigi-hawaii October 27, 2010 5:00 pm

    ike,

have you ever tasted Korean sushi?

My hairdresser gave me some to taste last year. Was ono.

  282. gigi-hawaii October 27, 2010 5:05 pm

I think UH should remain in the WAC and just keep rebuilding the conference with additional schools. After all, hasn’t this happened before (other schools seceding in the past)?

Wouldn’t scheduling be less stressful (belonging to the WAC) than becoming independent?

  283. Last Call October 27, 2010 5:07 pm

  301. WAC football: Updating the expansion process

Posted by Jon Wilner on October 27th, 2010 at 7:09 pm | Categorized as BYU football, Fresno State football, Karl Benson, Mike MacIntyre, San Jose State football, WAC football

    By Jon Wilner

The Western Athletic Conference is close to finalizing expansion plans that would bring Texas State and Texas-San Antonio into the conference for football beginning with the 2012 season, league officials said.

Denver and Seattle don’t play football but are strong candidates to join in other sports, including men’s basketball.

The WAC’s expansion timeline has accelerated in the two months since Fresno State and Nevada announced they would jump to the Mountain West, leaving the conference with six football-playing schools, including San Jose State.

“You’d like to get the league set as quickly as possible so it settles things for recruits,’’ SJSU Coach Mike MacIntyre said. “You don’t want to go into their homes (this winter) and have them ask you all kinds of questions.’’

WAC commissioner Karl Benson originally targeted next spring as the window for inviting new members. But that plan changed after coaches encountered negative recruiting by teams in other conferences, which have told recruits that the WAC’s future is in jeopardy.

“It’s important to send a strong message sooner than later that the WAC will continue to operate,” Benson said.

Asked if the Spartans have been affected by negative recruiting, MacIntyre said: “Not at this moment.”

Texas State, Texas-San Antonio, Seattle and Denver made presentations last month to the WAC membership committee, which includes SJSU athletic director Tom Bowen.

Both Texas schools, which play in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA), appeared eager to make the jump to major college football. They expect to have football budgets that are “very comparable” to those of the six remaining WAC teams, Benson said.

The WAC is also interested in adding Montana, a highly successful FCS program. But the Grizzlies are conducting a feasibility study to determine if a jump to the WAC – and all the accompanying costs, particularly for scholarships – is worthwhile.

“History has proven that you can join the WAC and be successful,’’ Bowen said, citing Boise State, which joined in 2001, as a prime example.

“We want universities that see playing FBS football a priority, and all the people we’ve discussed (expansion) with understand that.’’

Fresno State and Nevada are expected to remain in the WAC for football through the 2011 season. The new members would join in time for 2012 to avoid a season in which the WAC only had six teams.

(bullet) Bowen said the WAC may continue its football scheduling partnership with Brigham Young beyond the current two-year agreement. (It’s expected that SJSU will visit Provo in 2011 and host the Cougars in 2012.)

(bullet) Bowen also plans to continue playing Fresno State in as many sports as possible, including football. “We still want to be a part of that rivalry,’’ he said. “Both schools are committed to it.’’

*** I’ve talked with multiple WAC officials and multiple WAC sources in recent days and put together a story for Thursday’s Mercury News. If you’ve been following the WAC expansion process closely — either through the Hotline or other outlets — then some of what you’ll read below isn’t news.

    But first, a few items:

    * Fresno State and Nevada are very close to reaching a departure agreement with the league. It’s all-but-certain that they will stay through the 2011 football season and pay some kind of penalty — whether it’s $5 million each, I don’t know. (One report out of Fresno today said the schools would ante up $1 million.)

    * There’s a good chance the WAC’s football scheduling partnership with BYU will be extended beyond the current two-year deal. BYU needs games, after all.

    * SJSU athletic director Tom Bowen told me that he plays to play Fresno State in as many sports as possible, including football — and that FSU appears committed to maintaining the rivalry.

    The story ….

Just curious has anyone ever seen the President of this University at an athletic event ?

Used to see David McClain A LOT at the arena and at Les Murakami.

I forgot what Marcy Greenwood looked like until I went to the BOR meeting regarding the athletic fee.

  303. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 6:08 pm

“Marcy Greenwood ” …. ah.. thanks.. couldn’t remember her name, much less her face.

  304. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 6:09 pm

Seems like Hinshaw is becoming the face of UH Upper campus.. JD, Lower Campus…

  305. papajoe2 October 27, 2010 6:13 pm

Thanks Kazz for #303. It makes me feel just a little better. I still would like for UH to go elsewhere in other sports but, because scheduling may get even more difficult in the future because of all the conference playoffs, stay in the WAC in football.

  306. madeinhawaii October 27, 2010 6:14 pm

Every time I heard the name David McClain, I’d flash on Lieutenant Colonel Henry Braymore Blake of MASH 4077. Why is that?

  307. Dennis Halloran October 27, 2010 6:18 pm

Following the Montana newspapers tells me that the Griz will economically decline moving up

Stadium expansion, scholarship expansion, staff salary expansion will not be made up by WAC exposure.

WAC still looks better as a west wing of CUSA in a few years

Seattle U was turned down by WCC because they did not raise BB status, and then they accomplished that by corralling Provo.

let’s go, six in a row!

  308. papajoe2,

Time time time… this is what we need.

At first I was excited about the prospect of football doing the indy thing and the other sports competing in the Big West. However in reality, while the other sports would be ok settled in the Big West and UH saving some kala by only traveling in California, football in the independent scene is sketchy at best.

If we handle our business and schedule good OCC opponents, we can move on, even in a WAC that looks like:

    UH

    SJSU

    Utah State

    LaTech (????)

    NMSU

    Idaho

    Montana

    Texas State

    UT San Antonio

UH has never been in a position to demand or even carve it’s own destiny thanks to errors of the past, but in this kind of WAC we can force more hands than we can now.

***On a side note, I forgot UT San Antonio softball previously held the NCAA Division I home run record in back to back season back in the early 2000’s.***

Texas State women’s volleyball and softball are pretty competitive too.

  309. Besides, if Texas State and UT San Antonio start getting their act together to really compete in football, I have NO doubt they will be a competitve D1 program in 3 years.

The state of Texas loves them some foobaw and they have can muster the resources to show it.

  310. I can live with a football only agreement with the WAC for UH and a Big West departure for the rest.

  311. A-House October 27, 2010 6:25 pm

Is Marcy Greenwood absent because she turned over all responsibility for athletics to Hinshaw?

Does this mean if UH makes another BCS game, she will not attend?

  312. A-House October 27, 2010 6:37 pm

If the WAC had not insisted that UH bring over the wahine VB, wonder who would have been the WAC champion the past 17 or 18 years?

Likewise, would UH have won as many Big West championships if they stayed?

  320. diehard fan October 27, 2010 7:52 pm

Thanks for the info, Kazz 303 & 310. And Texas State and Texas San Antonio are closer to HI than Louisiana.

Hawaii can’t really carve its own destiny, not due to errors on it’s part, but due to its geographic location and the time and costs required to travel by Hawaii and its opponents.

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation !

Today will mark a milestone achievement for me as I have

completed 18 years of dedicated professional service to

thousands of disadvantage children at the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center.

Since October 28th, 1992 I have kept my FOCUS on the education I received

from Manoa and the WONDERFUL experience of working with your children from

Hawaii and have turned this journey into an accomplishment that really leaves me

speechless with so much joy and happiness of great satisfaction as a respected

professional male role model who’s only chief desire was to always render a professional service.

I have been told you judge a man’s character by his words and action of sharing and

caring for God’s people as through this when all is said and done that your time on earth

will be fullfilled with many awards, accomplishments, praises and heart felt appreciation

as for the past 18 years in TOUGH South Central Los Angeles I have made a DIFFERENCE

of saving young lives from drive by shootings, drug addiction, alcoholism, prositution, gang retaliation and initiation !

Finally, a warm MAHALO to each and everyone of you for allowing me to come on your

blog and express my LIFE of what I have done and accomplish since having the HONOR

of wearing the Rainbow Warrior uniform from 1976-81. 28 years of doing my “VERY BEST”

away from the gathering place with 18 years today of representing you good folks with

    honor, dignity and respect !

Have a WONDERFUL day Tsaiko Nation and thank you ALL for your GREATNESS !

    A HUI HO !

re: 359 mih Knee pain usually a sign of sciatica. For all knee pain not caused by injury, the best cure is a stretching exercise called “smell your feet”. Sitting on a chair cross the offending knee over the other knee. Then try to smell your feet by simultaneously raising your feet and bending towards it.

  387. Garret October 28, 2010 5:13 am

The last proposal on the table was reportedly to have Fresno State and Nevada make a combined buyout of less than $2 million before joining the Mountain West Conference, far below the $5 million each the WAC had been seeking per the so-called solidarity pact agreed to by the members in early August.

Indications are the buyout could be spread over several years so that the remaining six members, including UH, would receive less than $100,000 per year.

If Ferd’s article is correct, then Nevada and Fresno State will apparently pay *less* than $1 million each to exit the conference…it would appear that the WAC traded off money for being able to keep Fresno/Nevada in the conference longer.

For leaving after this school year, BSU is reportedly leaving behind about $1 million that they would have gotten from the WAC, so $1 million is BSU’s “exit fee”. If Fresno State and Nevada pay the same (or less!), then it appears that the WAC is treating things like Fresno and Nevada gave notice in time to leave after the 2011-2012 season. That would mean they are kind of completely ignoring the loyalty pledge payments…wow.

If Fresno and Nevada are members of the WAC through 2011-2012, then it would appear that they would share WAC revenue like any other member. So, if BSU makes a BCS bowl, Fresno and Nevada will each get $375k of the $3 million the conference will split. UH will get $375k instead of $500k if Fresno/Nevada were out of the conference sharing. Of course, UH beating BSU would mean no BCS bowl money for the WAC and it wouldn’t matter then anyway.

    Ronnie,

I definitely have to miss the Calf Call today and I’m very unhappy about that! I can sit upright for a few hours to get some work done, and then I have to lie down for hours shivering under a blanket. This is a nasty cold.

There is no way that I could survive the 3 hours of driving I would have to do to get to/from the Calf Call. I wish it was closer but I think everybody else attending is from LA/OC.

  391. Kekoa (iPhone) October 28, 2010 5:20 am

Good morning Whitey… and another All-Hawaiian sunrise to all those who may be feelin’ a bit Tsai-ko this morning.

  392. Garret October 28, 2010 5:23 am

I think that it is a GREAT idea to try out Pilares as punt returner. He’s so quick and dangerous in the open field that he could do some damage for UH. It would also enhance his NFL chances to have some punt returning experience.

I’m not so sure about the exit fees for FSU and Nevada. Why even charge them if they are going to stay for the 2011-2012 season? Isn’t it just like saying they have declared their intention before July 1, 2011 and want to leave on June 30, 2012? BSU declared before July 1, 2010 and will leave on June 30, 2011 and they don’t pay an exit fee (just their share of money). I can understand if we get money if they leave only football and take other sports to MWC before June 30, 2011, but not if they don’t leave any sports before then. I understand they made the loyalty pledge, but I am not sure how it’s worded so I can’t really say anything about it. Did the pledge say that nobody can leave ever, or just not within a time span of a year or two years?

  399. Kekoa (iPhone) October 28, 2010 5:28 am

#389… Garret… I’m hoping Fresno and Reno would be forced to forfeit their WAC Paychecks as part of this settlement, since it seems they will be paying less than Boise to leave. Of course, I’ve been hoping to hit this lottery or Powerball so we can help pay for some stuff at UH too… and we see how lucky we’ve been with that so far!

  404. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 5:40 am

Sorry I haven’t been participating as much lately. Three of our kids had some bad kimbab from a store two days ago. So, I’ve been stuck dealing with the aftermath of cleaning up, keeping them hydrated, keeping their fever down, etc. Good thing not everyone ate that stuff!

Gratz, Cliff, on 18 super years of giving and spreading aloha!

  405. mctruck October 28, 2010 5:42 am

How I wish that if so, this exit package includes Benson. What a snake!!!

  406. rage777 October 28, 2010 5:44 am

Looks like FSU and Nevada are paying $900k and all sports staying until 2012.

    http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2010/10/fresno-state-nevada-must-wait-until-2012-to-leave-wac-for-mountain-west/1

    Pomai,

    41-Warriors

    20-Jailbirds

  408. Garret October 28, 2010 5:47 am

    Pomai,

All BCS bowl games pay the same, including the national title game.

  409. HawaiiMongoose October 28, 2010 5:50 am

The WAC website confirms that Fresno State and Nevada will each pay $900,000.

As previously reported, they will also keep all of their teams in the WAC until the end of the 2011-2012 season. Complete terms and conditions of the agreement are here:

    http://www.wacsports.com/ViewA…DB_OEM_ID=10100

All parties are released from all claims. So, there will be no further legal action, including no lawsuit against Welty or Glick or anyone else.

  410. Garret October 28, 2010 5:50 am

Isn’t it just like saying they have declared their intention before July 1, 2011 and want to leave on June 30, 2012?

    Good find by rage777!

$900k in 5 installments…that is a lot less than $5 million. *Any* school leaving the WAC has to pay an exit fee (which really is just the withholding of conference revenue), so rage777 is correct that it appears that the WAC is treating Fresno/Nevada as if they provided notice before July 1, 2011 to leave on June 30, 2012.

As I said earlier, it appears that the WAC is completely going to ignore the loyalty pledge and *no* money will be collected for it. The WAC is just enforcing its bylaws for the departure notification deadline.

  413. Garret October 28, 2010 5:56 am

Reading through the settlement, some interesting tidbits:

    1. Fresno State and Nevada do *not* need to admit that they did anything wrong.

    2. Fresno State and Nevada receive their FULL SHARES of WAC conference revenue for the 2010-2011 academic year. That means they get full shares from what BSU is leaving behind (the $1 million BSU isn’t taking and the $3 million from the BCS if BSU makes a BCS bowl).

    3. Fresno State and Nevada have to be treated like any other WAC team until June 30, 2012…so, no taking home games away from then or any other punishment.

    4. Fresno State and Nevada, and all of their employees, cannot be sued by the WAC.

    5. The WAC pays its own lawyer fees…which will probably reduce the payout by some number.

  414. protector October 28, 2010 5:56 am

    gigi-hawaii on #316,

I’ve been saying the same thing to friend’s about Alex’s mom. Good news if she’s confirmed for the Boise state game as Alex has scored 3 then 4 TDs. Hopefully, he’ll score 5 against Boise to continue the mathematical progression/pattern.

  415. HawaiiMongoose October 28, 2010 6:00 am

Karl Benson just stated in the press conference that new additions to the WAC will be announced within the next 30 days.

  416. rage777 October 28, 2010 6:05 am

    Garret,

I thought it said that the prevailing party gets some money for lawyer fees? Isn’t the WAC the prevailing party since they are the ones getting money? Or since this is an agreement between both parties, they each have to pay their own fees? This is why I hate these lawyer type documents, it’s so confusing to non-laywers.

FSU and Nevada still have to give up their money for the 2011-2012 season, so UH needs to go to a BCS game next year so we don’t have to split the money with them and get a bigger share. We also need for all the WAC teams to go deep into the NCAA basketball tournment in the 2011-2012 season.

  417. rage777 October 28, 2010 6:06 am

Oops, never mind about that lawyer fee stuff. I just saw the paragraph just below that stated they have to pay their own lawyer fees. What was up with paragraph 18 and 20 conflicting each other.

  418. Garret October 28, 2010 6:08 am

    rage777,

There is *no* winner declared in the settlement. I’ll try to make this not confusing…here are the exact words in the agreement that are relevant to your question:

Dismissal of Suit: Upon the execution of this Agreement by all PARTIES, the WAC shall cause the Complaint in its entirety to be dismissed with prejudice, each Party to bear its own attorneys’ fees and costs.

  419. rage777 October 28, 2010 6:10 am

Another thought, why doesn’t the WAC get out of Colorado since we don’t have any teams there anymore. But then again, with Karl as our commisioner, the office would be moving every 5 years because of people leaving the conference.

  420. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 6:10 am

Now, we need for UH, LaTech, Utah State, and maybe Idaho to finish in the top of the WAC next year. Would be even better if SJSU and NMSU could beat Fresno AND Reno, and send them to the MWC as our doormats!

  421. Garret October 28, 2010 6:11 am

18 and 20 don’t conflict. 18 says that if either side breaks the agreement, then the losing side of the lawsuit filed will pay the lawyer fees for the other side.

For example, if the WAC tried to change the home/road schedule for Fresno/Nevada and give them less home games, that would trigger a lawsuit and the WAC could end up paying the lawyer fees for both sides.

  422. Garret October 28, 2010 6:12 am

    rage777,

Benson is happy living in Colorado. The WAC Presidents seem to be happy with Benson. Looks like the WAC offices will stay in Colorado…

  423. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 6:12 am

Or, at least move the WAC offices to Vegas. It’s an easy city for everyone to fly into, hotels and food is cheap, etc.

  424. rage777 October 28, 2010 6:13 am

I should stop browsing the WAC website, because now I don’t understand why we have Sports Affiliates in Washington (where we have no teams) but not in New Mexico (where we actually have a team).

  425. protector October 28, 2010 6:13 am

    rage777,

Hopefully the WAC-stabbers will absorb the court costs since they were the cause of the litigation. As for the Wahine and Warrior Basketball teams, I would be happy if they make it to the NCAA tournament. That’s another step in “righting the ship” and regaining attractiveness. If they can’t make it to the NCAA, I’d settle for the NIT; at this point beggars can’t be choosers.

  426. 808ike October 28, 2010 6:13 am

    Garret #153,

Your game plan to LizK has my vote. Don’t have any faith in the lame commish.

  427. HawaiiMongoose October 28, 2010 6:18 am

Per Benson, dialogue is continuing with the same five schools as before about joining the WAC (Texas State, UTSA, Montana, Denver and Seattle).

There’s still further review and evaluation as to whether on-campus visits are needed before making decisions. If the conference members think they have enough information to decide, they’ll pass on on-campus visits.

  428. Garret October 28, 2010 6:19 am

So, Fresno State and Nevada will play in the WAC in 2010 and 2011. The BCS evaluation period goes from 2010/2011/2012/2013. UH and every other WAC team needs to make sure that 2010 and 2011 don’t go well for Fresno State and Nevada…UH did its part this year but the rest of the WAC6 haven’t beaten either team yet.

  429. 808ike October 28, 2010 6:20 am

    rage777,

    Ask BHF2 for translation.

  430. Garret October 28, 2010 6:20 am

Hopefully the WAC-stabbers will absorb the court costs since they were the cause of the litigation.

    protector,

The agreement that Benson signed says that the WAC will pay all of its legal expenses. That is directly coming out of money that could have been split with UH.

  431. Garret October 28, 2010 6:23 am

Neither Fresno nor Nevada have finished in the top 25 in the BCS standing in the 2008/2009/2010/2011 BCS evaluation period so far, so they don’t really help the MWC with its AQ chances in the 2008-2011 evaluation period. If Nevada loses to BSU, neither Fresno nor Nevada will be in the top 25 this year either.

The MWC gets a big bonus for having just 8 teams in the 2008-2011 evaluation period. They probably like this deal.

  432. expat October 28, 2010 6:24 am

The settlement seems to make sense. The “loyalty pledge” was unenforceable from the parts of it we have seen posted since the whole BYU thing fell through. It was poorly written and poorly conceived. But that should be no surprise to anyone. What the WAC really needed was for both schools to stay put for one more year in order to avoid a scheduling meltdown, and that is what we got.

For football Nevada looses Kap, Taua, and Moch. It will be interesting to see how well they do next year. The mission for all the remaining WAC schools should be to send them to the MWC with a losing record. We get Fresno at home next year. Hard to tell how good Fresno will be. They will have a new QB, but they have a relatively young team this year.

  433. rage777 October 28, 2010 6:26 am

Thanks Garret, for clearing that up for me. That’s why I will never be a lawyer or understand their language.

The other good news is that the BCS points for FSU and Nevada doesn’t go to the MWC next year. The way the bottom half of the MWC is playing this year, it would probably have helped them a lot.

  434. rage777 October 28, 2010 6:27 am

Garret, you are like a psychic answering my questions before I post them.

  437. Buffoman October 28, 2010 6:38 am

If UH has not already done so, it really is time for the school to get a strategic think tank going with regard to the future of UH athletics. If the school is serious, they need to expand that group. Bring in people like JJ’s super agent, the AD or president from UTexas and have them tell us why our “pig looks ugly” to the rest of the college athletic world and if they were here, what would they do to pretty the pig.

Guessing or being myoptic may be fatal in the long run. I believe that if UH is serious, its really time to spend some dollars.

Or…they can stay in the WAC, leave all things as they are and once again be at the mercy of those on the continent deciding for us.

  438. PolyMom October 28, 2010 8:19 am

Buffoman–It is all about money! No need think tanks…many have offered to help UH but due to it being a State Institution…can not work for free. But everything about this is about money and time.

You are right. If UH is serious there has to be an money. When you got the students complaining about the athletic fee, compared to mainland schools UH is so cheap for the kids. But the mentality even the students have has to change. We are either going to have a football team or not.

    This not good for recruiting.

It’s amazing to me that Fox’s only coverage of the rally is about the “extremist groups” that attended. The only news worthy fact they found was that some members of a rally 200,000 strong support gay marriage and legalization of marijuana. Its ironic that so many Fox followers accuse everyone else of being sheep when they having been using Beck’s koolaid to rehydrate his emergency frozen food packs

Humpbacks migrate from their Alaskan feeding grounds each to give birth, raise their young whales, mate, and return to Alaska in April. The ocean approximately Maui to become teaming with whales actively playing, courting, rearing their young, and simply enjoying a balmy respite from the incredibly cold waters of the arctic. Humpbacks never eat anything while in the balmy Hawaiian waters – krill, their favorite food, cannot live in warm ocean but exclusively found in arctic seas. So though they spend the winter season in Maui they drop just about one-third their body weight. Honua Kai Resort & Spa

Ab crunches are the simplest and easiest way to getting a 6 pack. Do atleast 5 sets of however many ab crunches you can do. Also, do NOT do ab crunches everyday. As 1. You will gain muscle slower as your not giving them time to heal and 2. you can cause permanent damage to your muscles. give yourself atleast 1 day in between working out

After June 21, 2010 Marriott halted selling timeshares; Marriott no longer markets a single timeshare week in the us! On June 21 Marriott joined their Ritz-Carlton division and then became their second Destination Club (DC). Have no idea exactly what a DC happens to be; to be honest it is really an upscale version of a time share. Marriott can now handle your whole vacation starting from the time you leave your front door until the time you come back. The Marriott DC has for sale Vacation Points that you use so that you can book villas at their forty resorts world-wide. In the event you own Marriott weeks now (timeshares) it is possible to register them, for a fee, into the completely new DC; you will always own them and can use them the previous way however they may be redeemed for Points with the DC. Points may be used to get reservations, secure exchanges within Interval International, use them for activities at the vacation destination, plus cruise vacation line tickets. Marriott Points

A helicopter tour of Maui is surely an extravagant event you have to do at least one time in your life! Absolutely it will set you back a whole lot however you won’t experience the beauty with Maui from anything except a helicopter. Now there tend to be always discounts offered as a result don’t ever pay the full price for any Maui helicopter tour because of reserving direct through the helicopter tour firm! You might find flights ranging from thirty minutes to flights lasting 90 minutes in total. All the flights start out at the airport in Kahului as well as some fly south towards Hana and the Haleakala volcano, some fly to the north shore of Maui in which seaside cliffs and waterfalls abound, quite a few fly to western Maui to the Iao volcano mountain, and some complete a total tour of Maui. Deciding on a helicopter is essential too – many are state of the art but some are very outdated. The newest helicopters are considerably less noisy and roomier and each seat features a unbelievable view. Get a digital camera and switch it on video mode as soon as you enter the aircraft to the time you leave. Make certain your digital camera has fresh batteries combined with room on your electronic digital card. Research much more within my web site Maui helicopter

Most of the trades were profitable except for 2 that lost a total of $31.I won’t trade with this software. So much affection i have with this software. But i suggest don’t depend fully upon this software. You might have chance of forgetting your won of forex trading. What you need to do is while using this software learning yourself and using your own systems helps you to make more money with less investment.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
